Good evening, all! I’m always amazed at the leadership I see in elementary classrooms ... ready to learn! Sylvia, Academic coach / ENG Tchr at Title 1 HS in Tampa, FL #HCPSTeach
In my classroom, I have classroom jobs — attendance, materials, ass’t tchr, time keeper, mantra leader, ... difficulty getting sts to volunteer #HCPSTeach
Hi! I am Melanie - 5th grade @TBK8 in Tampa! A job I offer is: Class Moderator: this student’s role is to track points in the Dojo App for things like: participation, sharing out thinking and ideas, and to show how students have gone above and beyond! #hcpsteach
My sons teacher @Tbk8desilva assigns students to the “news crew”. My son loves this- they take videos to document learning to share in their weekly newsletter. #hcpsteach
Hello Hello! Holly from @TurnerBartelsK8! My students love "unpacking the objective" on their own! Circle, underline important info...live their discussions! #hcpsteach

Hi! Brittany Anair, 4th Grade ELA, Hammond Elementary.... besides traditional student jobs, I have leaders at their table groups, time keepers, readers of the week, Word coach of the week, and I'm sure I'm forgetting others! #hcpsteach
A1. Students take turns being the line monitor. They are encouraged to use positive reinforcement with their classmates, so you will see the monitor walking back and forth telling s's "Good job" & "I like how you are walking in n line" #hcpsteach
Students seek out ways to be leaders in the classroom by deciding what our classroom roles and figuring out what we need to do as a class. This is established through classroom culture and what students notice needs to be done! #hcpsteach
It is still a work in progress but I have an insane idea to start on a student-created manual for using the @htcvive! They would provide an introduction and, basically, create a FAQ as well as reviews of the VR experiences they use?#HCPSTeach
We have a "word of the week" bulletin board. Each week a different S teaches a word they found challenging from their chapter book & has to find out a definition, synonyms, antonyms, create a sentence, etc. #hcpsteach
Last year I was pirate themed:
matee, parrot, booty keeper (class supplies), man of the deck , etc
#hcpsteach my school does captain and co-captain who then serve in 1 of 3 branches of governnent

A1 I offer jobs/responsibilities but I struggle with getting volunteers ... many of my sts come from high poverty & may not have a role model #HCPSTeach
A1: Survey your students. Pop-up a quick survey via GoogleForms and inquire about changes. Are there more hands-on experiences that they want? More time to collaborate? Are they willing to create a student-led project for https://t.co/mU4PfgkZLy to acquire supplies? #HCPSTeach
A1: In 5th, being able to apply for and explore new roles and also reflecting on those ‘jobs’ enables students to figure out what “fits them” and determine their unknown strengths! #hcpsteach
A1: allowing students to have a say in things/choice creates ownership. I also allow my Ss the opportunity to share and display their ideas. #HCPSTeach
A1: From Day 1, same expectations for them and me. Creating a culture where they know they have a responsibility in making our class successful. They love it & prefer it! Monitoring each other is huge! Always in a respectful way (model, model, model)! #hcpsteach
A1:I think it’s important for all teachers, but specifically primary teachers to have a system or a routine and stick to it. Start small so that you don’t become overwhelmed and over time the kids can take responsibility a little at a time. #routinesfordays#HCPSTeach
A1: When students have a choice in the classroom and are not assigned a specific job, they will take on roles they want and do so with pride. Living the seven habits in the classroom helps students begin with the end in mind. #leaderinmeschool#hcpsteach

A1: Cheers that encourage each other, voting for those they feel fit that leadership role, and praise for jobs well done from the students to each other #hcpsteach
Using the ideas in #XPLAP and I am turning my class into a multi-player gaming experience. I don't game, so the boys will have tons of input into creation and will be very involved
#hcpsteach
A1: Ss have 2 feel comfortable & confident. I'm huge w/ growth mindset. I must say "did your brain grow?" a million times a day. Ss feel safe, esp when the class is encouraging them to take risks. They feel pride in each other! #hcpsteach
A1: when I taught 4th they created the jobs and had to fill out a job application! They loved this idea- total ownership bc they had to explain why they should have this job and fight for it! #HCPSTeach

A2 I’ve done some reflective writing at the end of each quarter but this quarter I’m starting the quarter providing a focus for their work — reflecting at the end of each unit based on standards #HCPSTeach
A2: Keeping and understanding their own Data, using graphs and charts to keep track of graded assignments, communicating with families. Writing reflections, conferencing with kids WITH their notebooks including work samples. #hcpsteach
A2. My s's evaluate their work when they receive graded assessments. Before s's place assessments in their test folders, they write on the test one way that they can improve. #HCPSTeach
In the classroom, I have individual data folders where students set SMART goals and track their mastery of the standards, various assessments, and their #40BookChallenge. I would love to have student-led conferences during the next conference night. Thoughts? #hcpsteach
A2: Conferencing with the students is always a must, explaining what all of it means, sharing examples, and visuals to understand everything in relation to their learning #HCPSTeach
A2 We are doing #geniushour this quarter. Sway, pictographs, movies for communicating their ideas and google docs for peer feedback . I cannot wait to see their projects in 7 weeks! #hcpsteach
Right now, I have students periodically assess their @ZincLearning reports to identify areas of strength and focus as the quarter goes on. I have found, to my chagrin, that students are much harder on themselves than I could have imagined. They DO care. #HCPSTeach
With the gaming, each "quest" has lots of pieces where they have to think about their learning and their learning goals.
#hcpsteach
Before this I always had parts on my exit tickets for reflection, and even way back, when the took a test, they would write a reflection
A2: I do know that Ts have a love/hate relationship with data but I will be printing out our semester exam reports, per class period, from SchoolCity and posting them as a visual. I will also put the cut-off score for passing the FSA just so there's an explicit goal #HCPSTeach
I love student led conferences. Even though I have older students, having a ‘script’ to follow takes the pressure off of them and ensures key points are addressed #hcpsteach
A2: I also always ask why? Why do you think that? What do you agree/disagree? Ss ask classmates too. Holds us accountable and makes us think about our answer/thinking. #HCPSTeach

A2. When we go over graded math assessments, students will make corrections with a skinny marker. This way they are able to see where they went wrong in their thinking and they are able to learn from their mistakes. #HCPSTeach
A2 Ss are in charge of graphing their own data & reflecting on certain activities/assignments. They write a weekly goal on their desk that they want to focus on & have a Friday journal they write to their parents about their week to reflect. #HCPSTeach

In your classroom, do you have multiple student-led conferences going at one time? Also, is there a specific time or schedule in case parents have questions students may not be able to answer? #hcpsteach
Definitely hard w/out devices. Thankfully, with @DonorsChoose, @Adopt_classroom, and @Hillsedufnd help, we will be 1:1 (a 2-year journey)! Even then, students are responsible for 1 article a week with accompanying quiz and assigned decks over the course of the qtr. #HCPSTEACH

Totally agree! It's so helpful just having that one on one time and conferencing about their specific strengths and areas of focus! They love it too! #hcpsteach
A3: Intermediate kiddos can/should be able to communicate their own behavior (to parents - verbally and in writing via planners, etc), acting as a model to others, treating others the way you want to be treated.. #hcpsteach
Our conference night is set up for one parent/student at a time. I wrote my script after I found some students needed help articulating their thoughts. It also helps me stay on track. I call the parent if they weren’t able to make it in #hcpsteach
A3- we completed a book study of Wonder. we talked about the precept "Your deeds are your monuments." This was powerful in getting my students to see that they are responsible for the choices you hey make, & people will remember us based on those choices! #hcpsteach
A3 I created a form that goes with our school's Core Values... When working in groups, Ss fill out the form as a way to see that everyone was following expectations and being held accountable. They take it very seriously & are usually SO honest! #HCPSTeach
We use the Term 2nd Grade Scholars They take their jobs more seriously when they take themselves seriously. Having pride in the way that you behave, doing what’s right even when you’re not being watched, being proactive.
A3: setting role model examples, teaching them ways to step back and evaluate what’s going on (this takes lots of practice), and supporting those times they practice these skills #hcpsteach
A3: I've found that it works well when students let me know that they are just having a bad day or are dealing with some personal difficulties. It is such a great way to build trust because when you honor it and they don't take advantage of it, there's trust estab. #HCPSTeach

A2: Knowing where to improve and where you are strong. Always using the phrase, “I know that I’ve got it when…” Student-Led conferences in primary are so helpful because parents have to hear about progress from the students themselves!: #hcpsteach
Q3: When students know their 'why', they consistently think about their actions and what they ultimately want to achieve. Every minute counts! When my students created our classroom norms, they made sure to add in believing in each other and themselves. #empowered#hcpsteach
#HCPSTeach Love that @HCPSCorkES instills the "7 Habits..." b/c my kiddo loves it and lives by it. She definitely takes being a student more seriously and has oodles of pride in herself, her friends, her teachers, and her school.
A4: Being trustworthy, responsible, choosing to reflect before you react to adults, being an Up stander rather than a bystander. Treating others the way you want to be treated, getting out of your comfort zone! #hcpsteach
A4: Kagan Strategies are amazing and allows Ss to be leaders & active listeners. Knowing when to speak up & lead and when to listen & take it in. 2nd graders learn it's okay to talk second & listen first. #hcpsteach
A4: Fave Question! Learning to stand up for yourself, saying no when it’s unsafe or unhealthy, not allowing others to make you feel worthless, less than, interfere with goals you’ve set for yourself. Also, looking out for and protecting others. #beyourself#HCPSTeach
A3. I teach my s's how the mind works and why it is so important to adopt a growth mindset before we talk about metacognition. I've found this to really deepen their understanding of metacognition!

Q4: We have #JS2S for our 5-8th grade Ss. Since our population is mostly military, Ss often need guidance when transitioning schools. Student leaders in #JS2S lead welcome lunches and tours for new Ss. This builds trust & positive relationships from the start! #culture#hcpsteach
Here you go! Some rules with it, they fill it out as a team and they can't single anyone out in a negative way. The comments are my favorite part because they usually are very honest and really reflect on every category! :) #hcpsteach
Yes!!! My students start every morning by saying their mission statement together. “At TBK8 I can do anything. I am responsible. I am respectful. I am willing to learn. I will succeed!” #hcpsteach

Whew! SO much learning! Thank you everyone! I can’t wait to digest all of these ideas and learn more about how to mold them into something I can use in my classroom! #HCPSTeach
Looking for a simple way to connect and share gratitude with your students? 3rd grade teacher @CassyDiaz creates a #CaringClassroom by having students create posters with individualized notes of thanks to their peers. Try it out! #BeTheOne#kidsdeserveit#EducatorsInAction

A4: My Ss created and signed our norms at the beginning of the year. They hang right by the door. As a reminder to hold ourselves to a high standard, we touch the norms every time we enter or leave the room. Past students come back to touch the norms. @TheLeaderinMe#hcpsteach
Couldn’t have done this without @MrsFaustTBK8 and @MrsCervone_AP We so enjoyed putting this together for you! Thanks again everyone! We look forward to learning from you in the future! #HCPSTeach
