Q1: What is your installation schedule and how often do you work special teams? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CODY_GARDNER Dec 12 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1) Our install is odd. With our schedule of spring, summer and fall, it feels like we install 3 times. We keep it really focused on base run fits and cover 0 & 3. And we don't rush it. If that's all we get in, then that's what we will play. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachJonesUHS Dec 12 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1.) Tuesdays are Punt/Kickoff. Wednesday’s are Returns. 25 minutes a day. 30 min on Thursday (because they win games) #TXHSFBChat

Try to incorporate all special teams into the 1st week & practice special teams every day. Games are won or lost on special teams plays! #TXHSFBCHAT

  • CODY_GARDNER Dec 12 @ 9:17 PM EST
Specials get one session a week and then extra time Thursday. All specials aren't created equally, session total time can and may vary. #txhsfbchat

Q2: Do you have drills you use to work special teams assignments, or do you work full scheme? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • kdawgswift Dec 12 @ 9:20 PM EST
A1: Punt goes in first in Spring for a variety of reasons, will will go Punt Return, KO, KOR then PAT/FG in fall camp. We work special teams for 15 to 20 minutes daily, Punt is usually done 2 times during each week as well #TXHSFBCHAT
  • kdawgswift Dec 12 @ 9:23 PM EST
A1 continued all are reviewed on Thursday & on Friday walk through. Monday & Wednesday Punt & Punt Return , Tuesday KO & KOR, Wednesday PAT/FG #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachJonesUHS Dec 12 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2.) blocking drills with 2 men dropping back. I tell our front line to drop back no less than 15 yards before attacking. We use the 2-9 blocking scheme which has our RT blocking #2 and our LT blocking #9. Count from L-R and don’t count K. Block to sideline. (Cont.) #txhsfbchat
    In reply to @txhsfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Dec 12 @ 9:23 PM EST
We had 2 punters, left and right footed rugby punters. QB1 and QB2......it was fun. I know it screwed up a few DC's weekends, our install time was actually really short. #txhsfbchat
  • kdawgswift Dec 12 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: Both early in season we use drills and full scheme, as season progresses we move to full scheme solely #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachJonesUHS Dec 12 @ 9:25 PM EST
A2 cont.) I’ll change it up weekly based off how they kick. If he goes deep we keep it. If it’s normally a squib or pooch I’ll bring lines up 5-10 yrd. so everyone is still blocking their guy with the exception of the return man. Our deep guy blocks the returners guy #TXHSFBCHAT

A2)Full. In the summer or early we have a rip and run drill for KO, nice drill for non-padded practice. #txhsfbchat

Q3: How often do your kicker and snapper work on their own? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • kdawgswift Dec 12 @ 9:31 PM EST
LOL we run a rugby style, because we run a full offense out of it! This helps us with coverage & takes practice time away from opponents by trying to prepare for everything. #TXHSFBCHAT

  • CODY_GARDNER Dec 12 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3)LS get time in pre-practice, we have had a nice run of snappers. Kick is a shared athlete, so when he is there, he get plenty of work. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachJonesUHS Dec 12 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3.) not enough unfortunately. LS is our RB. Punter is our QB. (Small 1A school in TN)When we are doing defense, they’re running our Delta team (scout team). I regret not working them more because we had 3 bad snaps off punts this year. Luckily we got 1 of those off. #TXHSFBCHAT

A3: Snappers were responsible to snap to punters and holders daily pre or post practice. Kickers and punters worked together throughout each practice period based on plan for day. Individualized coaching and remediation took place frequently throughout these periods.

    Special teams circuit #TXHSFBCHAT
    • MonsoonFootball Dec 12 @ 9:33 PM EST
We use a special teams circuit (except OL who practice FG). Everyone learns to punt protect, KOR blocking, punt block & KO lanes. 5 min x 4 circuits then two each day plus FG mixed in during offense. LS-SN is pre practice

A2:kickoff I use whole unit flying 20's for kickoff takeoffs. Also work small group Avoid Opposite, Butt & Press, and Come to balance. Then put it together as a unit drill. On punt return I work in groups trail and pester, throttle down and block. Then entire unit.

In fact the option pass fake was thrown to our normal LS, our TE was out hurt mid game, subbed the LS to TE and put in the soph snapper. #txhsfbchat
  • txhsfbchat - Moderator Dec 12 @ 9:40 PM EST
Q4: How do you personnel each unit? #TXHSFBCHAT
  • JDFreeman54 Dec 12 @ 9:42 PM EST
Everyday. Part of pre-practice while everyone else stretches. #TXHSFBCHAT

  • kdawgswift Dec 12 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4: LOL we are a team of 30 total in entire program. We try to find ways to get starters of ST, but reality is 80% of our starters are on at least 2 to 3 units! #TXHSFBCHAT
  • CoachJonesUHS Dec 12 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4.) Kickoff-Speed/Best Tacklers/Most Aggressive. ( I want the ball back right now). KR- Speed in the back. Fast OL and LB’s on front 2 lines. I like the 5-2-2-2 but thinking of moving to the 5-3-2-1 on KR. #TXHSFBChat

A4) Punt Ret D stays out, Punt we subbed C, shuffle skill. KO and KOR, balance of skill, speed and youth. #txhsfbchat
  • CoachJezek Dec 12 @ 9:45 PM EST
A4: Quick change groups (FG/PAT & PR) is with as many guys as we can from the unit still on the field (O-line, LBs, DBs). Kickoff, punt, etc. are guys that are fast and work the skill sets whether it is block destruct & track returners or handle the rock. #txhsfbchat
  • MyGAOnline Dec 12 @ 9:49 PM EST

  • CODY_GARDNER Dec 12 @ 9:53 PM EST

We use a lot of O/D starters so it is really just part of their overall play. For non O/D-starters the reward is generally an increased chance they will become an O/D starter. The skill sets are so similar that success in one correlates to success in the other. #txhsfbchat

A5 at the college I was at prior S/T players were the first ones to eat at team meal, first to board bus, etc. During college playing days, Specials had first choice of rooms, seats, foods, etc as well as were cut out of conditioning a little earlier for hustle. #TXHSFBCHAT
