#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Sorry about the guitar playing in the hallway this morning. These girls wrote a song for their friendship project! Can’t wait for them to present! #tlap#learnlap#KidsDeserveIt 🎸 🎶
Rich Hayzler, Middle School Principal from NJ and creator of the @DisruptedTv Learning Sparks series. https://t.co/1idy6KLXsR I am honored to be moderating tonight's #learnlap chat! Thanks @PaulSolarz for the opportunity!
Pete, #techdir from NJ. I work with some of the best educators in the world and have the amazing role of facilitating the #edtech they dream of in their classrooms! #learnlap
Hi! My name is Megan Mclean and I am a pre service teacher studying at Lesley University in Boston, MA. Thank you for allowing me to join tonight! #LearnLap
Paul Solarz, 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois and author of #LearnLAP ("Learn Like a PIRATE"). SO appreciative to have @RichHayzler moderating tonight!
A1- I think it needs to look clean and well taken care of. Things in their places and ready for a fresh start. I believe it helps are students get a fresh start each day. #learnlap
A1: Classrooms should be "student friendly" in that they encourage collaboration, flexibility and student ownership. Make learning spaces where students can explore and feel empowered to take risks. #LearnLAP
A1: Teachers listing what they are currently reading at the front door - accompanied by an interesting comment or question! Great idea @RichHayzler#learnlap
When Ss walk into my room, they typically look for the quote/thought of the day....and what fruit I've managed to pilfer from the dining hall and bring to their snack-basket! (Bananas are HUGE collateral!) Just a welcome and a mindful thought. #learnlap
A1 There is definitely a lot there, bright walls, music, Ss say it is cozy, welcoming, I have created more flexible spaces for learning, Ss can move around more #learnlap
A1: I strive for my classroom to look organized, welcoming, and like a fun place to learn - I want it to be a place my Ss feel at home and excited to be! #LearnLAP
A1: The best complement I recieved this was this year when my new Prinpical told me he felt like he was walking in to his living room. Home = safe in my book, and when Ss feel safe and valued, learning occurs. #learnlap
When Ss walk into my room, they typically look for the quote/thought of the day....and what fruit I've managed to pilfer from the dining hall and bring to their snack-basket! (Bananas are HUGE currency!) Just a welcome and a mindful thought. #learnlap
A1:Your classroom and you must be and look inviting. Edutopia posted this article about the power of welcoming students at the door https://t.co/N8CJ5rdgPV#Learnlap
A1: When I taught 3rd, I loved having my room decorated in a way that was bright and full of positivity so my students felt comfortable and supported. At some point, I started leaving the bulletin boards blank and filled with anchor charts we made as a class #LearnLAP
A1: Was just considering this today. The tech and media specialists have their spaces all set- painted, organized, new things there inticing Ss to come in and participate. I need my IT team to regroup from a busy opening of school/summer and straighten up our office! #learnlap
A1- Colorful, student work throughout the room, teacher greeting every student at the door, and an intriguing question/scenario posed to the students as they enter. Even better if it is student designed. #LearnLAP
S work is highlighted so they know what they do is important- workspaces are accessible to ALL Ss no matter their physical challenges- materials for the day are ready and questions are posted #LearnLAP
Greetings from Atlanta, GA! 5th grade educator currently writing a blog for a graduate class about this Twitter chat! Looking forward to participating. #learnlap
The classroom must be organised. It makes a real difference. Students need and want structure and routine so everything must have a place. It's chaotic otherwise. This is their classroom, so along with being neat, it must also be warm and welcoming. #learnlap
A1: The look of my classroom is positive, surrounding students with positive quotes and sayings yet similar in style/color to not be too distracting or overwhelming. #LearnLAP
A1: my classroom is their classroom. We have many different types of alternate seating and they can choose to work where they are most comfortable. #learnlap
A1-
S work is highlighted so they know what they do is important- workspaces are accessible to ALL Ss no matter their physical challenges- materials for the day are ready and questions are posted #LearnLAP
Having a warm and welcoming environment always helps. Also leaving room for S work shows that S's educational creations are as valuable to the room as any other decoration. The whole point is to include Ss in your classroom community.
#LearnLAP
A1 I did a total makeover of my room this year with flexible seating and so far kids are loving the choices and getting a lot of creative output. #LearnLAP
A1 - Kids immediately see all of my plants and feel like they're walking into a jungle. Quite often, the furniture may be moved around, supplied might be out, or caution tape might be strung. The novelty of the situation often gets my 4th graders' excitement piqued! #LearnLAP
A1: I want a classroom that supports positive interactions. One that inspires positive collaboration, honesty, safety. One where students don't fear being open with me or each other. #learnlap
A1: The best complement I recieved was this year when my new Principal told me he felt like he was walking in to his living room. Home = safe in my book, and when Ss feel safe and valued, learning occurs. #learnlap
A1 I did a total makeover of my room this year with flexible seating and so far kids are loving the choices and getting a lot of creative output. #LearnLAP
A1 Such a great question! If it's too neat Ss might be afraid to touch things Make it inviting, use flexible seating areas create learning stations and interactive displays Let Ss know it's their space. Display the student's work let the students decorate the room #learnlap
A1. I always try to use welcoming colors that flow well with each other. I try to make it very student friendly by adding things they have asked for such as flexible seating. #LearnLAP
A1 As Instructional Coach/Reading Specialist, I don't have a class of my own or student roster. I/m in all classrooms, supporting teachers. But instead of making my "classroom" positive-I make sure I'm ready. New outfit, big lady shoes, manicure, pedicure & coiffed hair #learnlap
Yes, this is really important. There's an idea in a book that I want to try where the teacher creates a box using masking tape. Before school and after school, the teacher stands in the box and gives everyone a hug before they leave/enter the room. #learnlap
A1: When kids are excited to come to your class, sky's the limit! Having a classroom that promotes safety, creativity, respect, and high standards, students can really grow. #learnlap
A1 - we have posters outside the room called “the Good Student.” They are reminders that students write about how to be successful in school. #LearnLAP
Having a warm and welcoming environment always helps. Also leaving room for S work shows that S's educational creations are as valuable to the room as any other decoration. The whole point is to include Ss in your classroom community.
#LearnLAP
A2:Love this quote from @burgessdave Show your passion through your energy and desire to see your students be successful. Being positive, building relationships based on trust, empathy and loyalty make all the difference. Be "all in" for every student. It matters. #LearnLAP#tlap
A2- Our attitudes play a huge role in student learning. If we aren't excited and engaged they won't be either. If you act like the Charlie Brown teacher you will get students who are the same. #LearnLAP
A2: Hi #learnlap! Popping in for this discussion! I think that a T's attitude plays a HUGE role. If Ss read energy, passion, and enthusiasm from their teacher, it makes it safer for them to buy in and also become invested.
A2. Students know when your passion is focused on their learning and on them. I try to keep a positive attitude in front of my students because I want them to know my focus is on them and they matter. #LearnLAP
A2: 9 times out of 10 - if we're excited they'll be excited! If they can feel our energy & enthusiasm, they will usually strive to meet that enthusiasm! Ss can tell I'm excited in my energy! #LearnLAP
A2b- Students can tell I am passionate about reading because I share what I am reading. I am engaging during read alouds. I show them why books are important. #learnlap
A2: I share my love of reading with them all the time. It’s my favorite hobby. I love to share what I am reading with them and borrow books from them I haven’t read before. #LearnLAP
I have to add, I got rid of my teacher desk too for the first time in 9 yrs and have Ss working at “my desk” island...I’m constantly on the move but having the Ss that want to be right there with me when I might be at my desk really helps them. #learnlap
A1: I am one out of 5 profs sharing a room. Just got all to agree to have group seating for the semester. This is a HUGE deal in #highered world. So many don’t want to leave rows and if one doesn’t, no one can. Ss automatically are happier to see groups. #LearnLAP#cemeteryrows
voice tone energy enthusiasm pattern of speaking body language all give you away as to your attitude and passion. Passion is contagious and students will feed off it
#learnlap
A2: When a student says "Mrs. L, how can LIKE math soooo much?", my job is done. Ss feed off of our energy, so if we are constantly showing neg energy, so will they! #learnlap
A2 Our passion for learning is clear, we are excited, welcome them in, staying positive and being invested in them, also because I am always reading and trying to learn more #learnlap
A2 - Every thing👍. We shape the experience for students. Personally, I greet every student at the door, promise to be positive, do a motivational word of the day, and some part of a lesson that focuses on something they do well. Students always know teachers that care. #LearnLAP
We started a "What Am I Reading" initiative with the teaching staff. We post what we are reading outside our doors to model literacy. Great conversations have been started! #learnlap
A2: Attitude and mindset are EVERYTHING, especially in math classes! When teachers are excited about what they are teaching, it will rub off. It's also important for math teachers to make struggling students feel comfortable--patience, positivity, and feedback! #LearnLAP
A2- We greet them at the buses/arrival- we praise all their progress...even things that seem small to outsiders- we tell them we love them- we remind them our school is their family- we high five, hug, take praise parades and celebrate their hard work @FosterElemHCPS#LearnLAP
A2: Yes, I agree with everyone. I'm studying maths 1 and my teacher is the bomb. she gets excited every lesson and it really makes me excited and want to know what's so great about maths and why I should teach it with as much zeal as her. #learnlap
Ss can tell whether I'm passionate about THEM or about math. I've learned to stop worrying about right/wrong answers while we learn and more about who is offering Qs & As & how the Ss are listening/relating to each other. Answers will come. Let's care for each other! #learnlap
A2 It’s implied and explicit! I tell them often how much I enjoy working with them, how much I appreciate them. I treat them with respect and honor their ideas by incorporating them, letting them teach each other with my support. #LearnLAP
For me passion extends beyond my room. I show up everyday ready to engage Ss. The smile on my face & willingness to be fair, patient & kind to all Ss lets them know I am in it for them. If they cannot even feel welcome in my class, how are they going to learn anything?
#LearnLAP
A2: It is the mindset of the classroom environment that I begin with and then take Ss on the journey sharing experiences & creating community #learnlap
A2 My favorite unit in @CPI_Training : Paraverbal communication. It's not what you say but how you say it! Believe in your students- empower them. Follow through with what you say. Show them you trust them and they will see your passion for their growth #learnlap
Hello #LearnLAP, I just got home and wanted to jump in. I am a 2nd grade teacher. My Ss always have a welcome message on the smart board waiting for them and music playing when they walk in the door. They ❤️it.
Attitude is everything ... you can't hide your passion and you can't fake it. Get a ton of the "how do you just know stuff about history?" ... umm... it is what I do. They know I am invested in them because they always seem to come to me for stuff. #learnlap
A2: Sit with them, laugh with them, share what you are passionate about. Remind them that you are a real life human being and not some robot in an office or classroom. When they see a spark in you, one will be ingnited in them! #learnlap
A2 I launched our first phenomena investigation based on Shel Silverstein’s “The Dirtiest Man in the World” and went full on character and covered myself head to toe in mud, literally. It was much dirty than the picture suggests but it started to dry and flake off. #LearnLAP
A2: The simplest of positive words seem to make the greatest difference and bring out the greatest reaction from Ss when working with Ss in my specialized math class. Showing that I believe in their mathematical abilities is easy for me & meaningful to them! #Learnlap
A2b - No student that I’ve ever met comes back to say “hi” to a teacher who they didn’t connect with. Before any content is delivered, we must build a strong, honest, trusting relationship. Once that occurs students will feel vested and believe in your ability to help. #LearnLAP
A2: Our attitudes as teachers means everything to our students! When we're having a bad day or we're disappointed in them for something, it's important to tell them that although we're frustrated, we still care greatly about each of them & things will get better! #LearnLAP
A2: I intentionally work to model excitement about learning: when I learn something new, I can’t wait to share it with them; when they learn something new, I get so excited and we ALL celebrate! I tell them daily how much I love being their teacher and seeing them! #learnLAP
A2 Passion shines through - when you love what you do it is readily apparent to others. Our job as educators is emphasize that passion so it is impossible to miss, then finding a connection to the Ss interests. When yours and their interests align, sparks fly. #learnlap
A2: I hope to be as honest as possible, building relationships and allow them to understand we are all learners and teachers. Teachers are still learners too. They should know I'm not perfect and I hope to learn too. #LearnLap
Hi! Kristen here late because Ms. 2 didn’t want to go to sleep! I teach 6th grade physical science! And I’m typing after dislocating my finger from a family room football game. but at least my nails look pretty!!!! #learnlap
A2 teachers that don’t listen to the negative noise and finds the new story for that student. Students are watching and they will not learn from someone that they don’t like. Build the relationship and get ready for engagement! AND TRUST #LearnLAP
Rich from North Syracuse. 9th grade Global History.
A1 I lived off a cart the last 2 years but got a room this year. My room is “organized” according to Ss.Has a legacy wall,Positive quotes,& the Pyramid of Success. Lots of space for Ss creation as we move forward. #LearnLAP
A2 Building relationships is everything when igniting Ss learning. My Ss know my passion because I am always sharing our productive struggle, offering free tutoring, and changing things up to engage Ss. #LearnLAP
A3: As Principal I dressed like a Pirate on the first day of school this year. A parent said to me the other day, "my son can't wait to get to school to see what happens next. What did you do to my kid? He likes coming to school." Create uncommon experiences! #LearnLAP#tlap
A2: I try to be 100% engaged with my Ss 100% of the time. I don't check email while their working... I ask questions, have them dig deeper, draw out answers. We laugh a lot! #LearnLAP
So... #LearnLAP - my husband and kids just rolled in here rocking some Harry Potter gear for my birthday so I gotta head out and do the thing. Oh wow y'all... can't even. LOL!
A2: Perhaps it’s RESPECT. There are connections between Ss who feel respected and who feel that their instructors are making good pedagogical choices. Ts who respect their Ss are investing in student success, not professional reputation. Ss know the difference. #LearnLAP
A3 Analyzed some paintings today and one student in particular was doing a great job; his first real contributions to our class! I told him he was so great at this! He was shocked. Maybe by me or maybe by himself. We’ll see! #LearnLAP
#learnlap a3 Riddle me this how does an Elephant Brush his teeth? sent that home answer wins. They came in to us making Elephant Toothpaste (google it) its cool!
A2 Stay positive! Practice what you preach! Live up to your own expectations! Set a great example and then live by it! Don't ask your students to do something you're not willing to do yourself. Let them know it's okay to fail. Let them know you will be there for them!#learnlap
A1: well, for one, it’s totally pink with like 10 thousand musical instruments, a plastic rat names Ralphie, some Lego guards, and a song is usually playing, to which Ian singing at the top of my lungs. #learnlap
A3 - We just did our “bag of life” today. Students share what items have shaped their lives and what they enjoy. It’s amazing watching them speak in front of students they may not know about their life. Huge confidence and community builder. #LearnLAP
A3: Virtual field trips to different biomes. Students chose their biome, studied the facts of it, made a slide presentation, and used @Screencastify + #GoogleEarth to become field guides. Ss upload their videos to @Flipgrid and watch the presentations. #learnlap
A3 Last year, I floored my Ss with the intro of text structures when I dressed up like a CSI agent. I transformed the room, and I had masks and gloves for them, too. #LearnLAP
A2 Attitude is key...it leads to relationships. I meet them with high energy. Fist bumps, “good morning”, positivity in abundance. They feel my passion for them as people. I try to live the REAL acronym by @TaraMartinEDU#LearnLAP
A3. At the beginning of my chemical reaction unit, I always create elephant toothpaste. The students really go for that unit and always bring it up. In my class, cool guys LOOK at the minor explosions. #LearnLAP
A3: When starting Beowulf, we would sing an Old English song - I sounded like an idiot, they laughed, but they wanted to hear more of this "weird" language. Great way to start an epic! #Learnlap
A3: For our unit on community we had our SRO, fire department, and city council visit the classroom. Our Ss even got to ride in the fire truck around the parking lot and put on some of the fire equipment. #LearnLAP
A3 A unit on energy involved having students drop eggs and fruit from various heights measuring the splatter. I had a very small S who wanted to do a high launch but I didn’t have a ladder so we re-enacted Lion King but dropping an egg (I’m 6’3”). #LearnLAP wish I had our pic!
A3: Students enjoy when their opinion and asked their opinion and provided the opportunity to share it. In the middle of introducing a new topic I stop to ask open ended questions and allow they to "agree, strongly agree, disagree, or strongly disagree". #LearnLap
Love these questions. They are the ❤️ of teaching. Art and Science of teaching and learning is based on relationship building and solid pedagogy. #LearnLAP
A3: When working w/ideas in writing their personal narratives we read some famous authors childhood stories and I share my own. I build the suspense for a final story that I write out & read to them from my childhood #LearnLAP
A3: In order to learn about the purpose of having LATITUDE & LONGITUDE, I dressed up & Skyped into the classroom (from the hallway) & asked my room full of Forensic Detectives to analyze the crime scene & report back to me where all the evidence was located. #LearnLAP#LearnLAP
#learnlap a3 Riddle me this how does an Elephant Brush his teeth? sent that home answer wins. They came in to us making Elephant Toothpaste (google it) its cool!
A3: Most recent hook was having them read the anonymous op-ed in NYT from in the White House and havinf them weigh in on the ethics, morality, and impacts of something like this on public and policy. As a govt course, this was a great way to get them engaged. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A3. A student last year slept thru my classes...I let her for a bit ,she didn't do well I didn't say anything.then on the PTM I told her mom I had so much faith in her but she wanted to be my sleeping beauty .so I was ok with that.the girl had tears , now she's my champ
A3: In my specialized math class consisting of students with special needs at different grade levels, I introduced a cup stacking activity. The trick, they couldn't use their hands, only strings tied to a single rubberband. They were ready after that! #Teamwork#Learnlap
A3 Loved finding Ss interests and shaping lessons so they can explore them. When teaching tech, we collected sneakers and compared to their most desired sneaker, then used design process and 3d modeling to improve! All about the shoes. #learnlap
I worked as a PreK T and our curriculum extended all year long. Halfway through summer some of my Ss told me they were "done" with the ABCs and 123s as they already knew them. I pulled a map of the US out and started pointing out the states. They were ENGROSSED!😄
#LearnLAP
A3 Some activities I used in my class was to started with the end result and then let the Ss create the process. We used to virtually connect with other classes in other schools and "show and tell" what we learned. We also had a partner class to help us as role models #learnlap
A4- I just encourage students to share with other students why they are excited about whatever it was we did in class. A lot of times if their friend is excited, they will get excited. #learnlap
A4. This is an area that I struggle in and I am very interested to see all of your responses. My biggest thing is getting their peers to explain what is going on and using some of their ideas to move the class in the right direction. #LearnLAP
A4: Focus on creating a growth mindset in your classroom where learning is celebrated and encouraged. When students feel success, empowerment follows. Check out my Learning Sparks episode on mindset here: https://t.co/uLmx5dQDTr#LearnLAP
A4 - We do that through RESPONSIBILITY PARTNERS. Students work near each other, but still maintain an independent focus on their work. Whenever someone needs some help or a critical eye, they ask their partner. Partners also make sure each other are on the right track. #LearnLAP
A3: A #Python challenge where students' AI programs competed against mine. 😂I've never seen students so determined to improve their programs. #LearnLAP
A3 Excited for the Pequannock Tech Summit because I'm super intrigued by using the "Escape the Room" technique in the classroom! #learnlap#peqtechsummit
A4: If a student isn’t “feeling it” you can always ask them why? Ask them how they’d rather show their learning. If a student has a better idea, #whynot allow them to show their learning in that way? #learnlap
Triangular neural circuit of parahippocampal gyrus, diencephalon and cingulate gyrus is known as the limbic circuit of #knowledge transfer in which all types of #learning inputs are converted into limbic knowledge for amygdala projection of zeid factors
#WordPress#tlap#LearnLAP
#learnlap a4 Have experts, as they know and can talk to each other sometimes better, have experts that can spread their knowledge, and by doing that learn it better themselves.
I tell my students that they are teachers too. Their friend might not understand the content the way I said it, but they will say it different and their friend gets it. That's powerful. #learnlap
A3 There are several. I think building class identity is the first and then building the context of I am not going to give them all the answers but they have to construct the answers themselves. #LearnLAP
A4 All Ss can connect w/ some lesson in class and when that time comes, I let them try to lead discussion if they are interested. I’m huge on creative output of any kind, so whenever I see something that isn’t normally shared I pump them up and try to get them to share. #LearnLAP
A4: I've found that having a small re-teaching group with the students who showed no interest and be assisted by a student who got it or showed excitement for the lesson made the lesson more interesting for those Ss. #Learnlap
A4 Engaging other Ss with purposeful discourse including questioning usually works. My Ss shared their #TEDTalks and ignited a tremendous interest subjects that were overlooked previously. #LearnLap
A3: #LearnLAP, I shared this video with my students to launch a #PBL unit. This, combined with a theatrical entrance into my classroom, launched the unit in an exciting way. My students stayed engaged throughout the whole unit! https://t.co/ZCH2ty7Bbr
Maybe our thought should not be on the lesson creation, but rather on the questions we ask ... and then let the students learn ... create different opportunities for students to show what they know. #learnlap
A2: My Ss know I am fully invested in the learning and not the content because I follow their interests. They are the drivers of the learning experience. I set the destination, but they do the driving. I show up for them every day and they do the same! #LearnLAP
A4: We have share time every Friday. Not every S wants to share but they see other Ss and their projects. The Ss become more confident every week. #LearnLAP
A4 Partnering Ss with peers who are invested I have found sometimes helps the lesson "catch." Sometimes we need to consider the big picture and use student interest to show you mastery of the skill. If Ss do not learn the way we teach, teach the way they learn #learnlap
Utilizing small group partners and teammates to encourage each other. If you set a team mentality, Ss want to help their classmates succeed. Ss love stepping into that teaching role, let them. Facilitate their learning, let them lead it.
#LearnLAP
A1: i try to keep it cozy/inviting &make sure each area is purposeful for the students! We have cozy/flexible seating options, class library, S. Book shopping library, math area, free choice spot, daily5 spot; most manipulatives are accessible to s for autonomy purpose #learnLAP
A4 having former Ss as student assistants, you can ping ideas off them of what worked/what didn’t. They are helpful in class when you can have them share their opinions with current students! Their excitement = new excitement! #learnlap
A4: Definitely. But I guess it kind of depends on your view of technology. A pencil is technology… However, one can be innovative with voice or skills that do not require other outside resources. #learnlap
A4. One thing that I did that got students to be more interested in writing was a "Glow and Grow" time where students offered advice and complimented their peers on a piece of writing that they shared. #LearnLAP
A4 Were learning not a shared experience it would be a very lonely one. It only takes a small spark for Ss to ignite interest among each other. As Ts we get to know our Ss well; facilitate relationship to create passion. Content will come once interest is there. #learnlap
A4: I am a huge fan of collaborative learning. I’ve had tables not desks for the past 15 years. Kids love to learn from each other and I like to plant the seed for them to discover and explore. I am also a fan of choice- choose a task and choose a partner. #LearnLap
@LearnLAP
A4: Sometimes, it's just not going to work for every student. that's the reality. but the plus side is that there are so many different ways of approaching a subject. Many ways of HOW we teach. We only need to find one way and then the kindle will become fire-I think
A4 I believe in giving ss a choice and a voice asking them what they would like to learn and how they would like to learn it guiding & facilitating the lesson but letting them explore so that it gives credibility to the lesson and gives ss ownership of their learning #learnlap
after most classes ... i am just trying to make sure the shop area is safe and free from hazards. #learnlap and the classroom does not have computers spot ready to fall onto the floor.
A3 the beauty of #SkypeClassroom you can get awesome expert speakers! We have skyped with authors, rocket scientists, divers and even senators! #learnlap
A.4 Sometimes as teachers we get in the way of #LEARNING by impose our expectations on the process. When students speak more and teachers talk less, students learn more.
#LearnLAP
It was actually the end of last year. The students were totally engaged, coming up with all kinds of questions themselves and learning from each other
#learnlap
#LearnLAP
A5: I planned a maths lesson this year from NZmaths website. It gives you a lesson plan basically. I had to change it to suit my style but I didn't expect to turn it into a maths lesson in an art context. It was fun to create and imagine the students doing this.
A5 I just recently had a former student tell me that he studied biology and became an environmental engineer because of everything he learned in my 7th grade science class #Powerful#LearnLAP
A5: I ran an edcamp #tlap session for an inservice day and it was amazing to watch teachers generate ideas that changed how they were going to start the school year for their students. Love hearing, "I'm so excited to get started and create an experience for them!" #LearnLAP
A5 I am always amazed by the different ways Ss create mnemonics or break down words in Spanish and attach meaning to the English translation, and also creative ways they come up w/to practice #learnlap
Sometimes that is the best way to do it. Let students incorporate their passions (interests) into a lesson. Sometimes we don't like to teach a certain unit as much as they don't like to learn it. Find their passion and use it! #LearnLAP
A4: we do so many collab activities for exactly this reason. They need to connect with each other and dig deeper. If they have a chance to teach others, observe, explain, revise, and engage; the learning happens almost automatically. We do a lot of peer teaching. #LearnLAP
A5. We had a Family Meeting where I used a coke can to explain that what you see is not always true. From the outside, the can appeared calm, but, in reality, it had been shaken violently and contents were under pressure. We talked about how people can be liked that. #LearnLAP
A4: Create a debate and students will engage with the content. In math, it could be "Is 1/2+1/4 = 2/6 or 3/4?" When students have to take a side they get excited and want to talk more. #LearnLAP
A2: I now start our days by just talking to each of them! (Relationships B4 learning). During learning time I draw connections to my life. They get so excited to hear about how I do the things we learn in class; It hooks them in! “last night when I was reading...” #learnLAP
I have to dip out to put a certain middle child to bed who doesn’t want to. Thanks for the chat as always! Great questions @RichHayzler and nice pick for moderator @PaulSolarz#LearnLAP
A5: today we were exploring the definitions government. Some student were totally excited. It surprised me. I glad they made great connections to their own life. #LearnLAP
A5 continued. The students really understood that and we talked about a lot that day. Even now, they will mention that as a way to explain how they are feeling. #ContentsUnderPressure#LearnLAP
#learnlap a5 Coding as a way to hook challenging boys, but what surprised me was they put that @LEGO_Education Wedo together faster and programmed it faster than students 3 years older than them. We are all Genius!
A5 Today! My 1st block was going over primary vs. secondary sources & I gave them a few that were hard to decipher (my dept actually debates) & the kids got into a positively heated discussion with mostly accountable talk that I haven’t even taught yet. It was awesome. #learnlap
A5 I read The Giving Tree to my 2nd graders for get them to ask purposeful questions about a text. They had so many deep questions and comments. They also figured out the tree was the boy’s parent. It was a conversation I was not expecting but loved! #LearnLap
A5: Ss worked together as city planners to create a city. When city council members came to the classroom they were very interested in the project and the Ss told them all about it. They demonstrated wonderful knowledge of some components of city planning. #LearnLAP
A5: In a Genius Hour exploration session comparing old school animation to digital animation, we started pass around post-it note pads for Ss to make their own old fashioned flip-book animations! It was amazing to see some of their creations!! #learnLAP
A5 I taught @CPI_Training classes to start the year and the response was awesome. A teacher told me how she used verbal de-escalation and I heard today, "The risk of doing something and the risk of doing nothing." Love that we are all here for kids. #learnlap
A5 Was able to facilitate some #edcamp style PD sessions during our opening days and found that passionate educators, given a safe environment and the time to share, do amazing things. Pro tip: they are great a teaching those things to others! #learnlap
A5 wasn’t necessarily a lesson but in my #1stdayofschool centers, I had the Ss type out a “what do I need to know” message and it opened the gate to all kinds of info for me! It sparks the way I teach that student, the way I speak, the way I set up my classroom, etc. #LearnLAP
Yes! My Ss have always been blown away when they learn that on a short answer Q, I will let them learn with a thought web or other visual if it answers the question. #LearnLAP
A5: During a recent book talk, a character was living with autism and when a question rose from a S, I found myself spending some time talking about autism and that it's not the same for all individuals diagnosed with it. I love teaching about differences!! #Learnlap
A5: I facilitated a math mindset session at our edcamp a few weeks ago. It had K teachers up to HS teachers and I enjoyed the interactions and discussions between the diverse groups who attended. #LearnLAP
A5:Loved introducing Science Current Events this year and exploring all the topics that fall under the heading of science. From the impact of hurricanes where we live to the Bugatti car made out of actual Legos. We talked the whole period. Loved it. #LearnLap
A.5 We started with Water properties and solutions and ended up talking about solution density and polarity of dyes the hour long discussion went way beyond the original 20 minute demo

A6: Our staff focused on the DOK levels of questioning to strengthen our assessments and questioning strategies. Check out the DOK strategies here: https://t.co/zYLU8ucrTS@DisruptedTv#LearnLAP
Student created problem with a factorial. Took time to investigate & talk about combinations/permutations & the power of ! Ss couldn’t believe all the ways I could make a seating chart for their class. #learnLAP

A3: last year, I set the stage for our daily read to self/whole group writers workshop by comparing our class environment to a Cafe/Book Store. They LOVED it & would often remind me of that comparison; we ended the year by turning our classroom into StarBOOKs #learnLAP
A4: I saw this posted up yesterday. A great graphic with a bunch of ways to get students to share thinking, develop ideas, then reflect on their learning together. #LearnLAP

A6: One of the subjects I'm taking is called "Reflective Practice", so I think I know a bit about this. I think it's important to be perceptive by first observing and then asking questions. Ask questions in relation to yourself and others. Talk to the students.
A6. Questions that do more than ask surface level reasoning. I like to have students make comparisons to their own lives, so they know that I value their input and what they have experienced. #LearnLAP
A6 I believe we need to have some questions preplanned to open up to deeper questions and discussion by Ss. Socratic seminars are great for this. #LearnLap
A6 - We talk about PHAT & SKINNY questions in our classroom. We seek to ask "Pretty Hard And Tough" questions that get at higher level thinking skills whenever possible, but lower level questions must be answered in order to do that. Lots of modeling & discussing! #LearnLAP
A6: Questions should come from the Ss while they explore. If they ask me a question I’m a fan of asking one back that prompts deeper thinking/discovery or throwing it out to the crowd or the audience(the rest of the Ss) #LearnLAP
If you don't follow @DisruptedTv, be sure to follow them. A great organization looking to share ways to make learning, teaching and leading great for students, staff and communities! #LearnLAP

A6 I took a workshop on questioning 3 years ago that transformed my questioning totally with one simple word—“might” because it opens potential answers and if they are a little off it’s ok. Builds comfort. Also the follow up—being aware and in the moment #learnLAP
A6 Could there be anything more important than the Qs we as Ts ask our Ss? If we have built a truly trusting relationship with our Ss, would they be willing to make a leap when we ask the hard Qs? Do you already know the A to a Q you ask, and is it worthwhile? #learnlap
A5: I haven’t had a lesson that went far beyond yet, but I am always humbled by my Ss who now work for legislators, nonprofits, or govt and who say that our classes had something to do with them starting a career in govt. #LearnLAP
A6: Recently, for math I've been loving the questions: "What do you notice? What do you wonder?" It applies to so many situations and brings it back to the beauty in math. #noticewonder#LearnLAP
A4: I have noticed that one students excitement, then my excitement for their excitement, will catch on and spread to others (sometimes it takes time)✨🔥choosing writing wasn’t a preferred choice for many last year until we started sharing 1-3 s. Work daily! Then🔥🔥🔥#LearnLAP
#learnlap a6 Reflective questions, put yourself out there, ask what did i do well, what did i confuse you about, how can I be better? They will tell you! and it is an awesome way to improve your performance!
A6 asking the right questions breaks down barriers of preconceived stereotypes, stigmas, & thoughts. If we ask any q's instead of assuming it builds trust and relationships because students are no longer feeling judged because they know you won't assume you rather ask #LearnLap
A6: I like open-ended questions and socratic questioning. Often, I will say something like "what I hear you say, is... Tell me more. What other questions do you have?" This opens up great discussions. #LearnLAP
A5b: I have a project they always loved; a full-fledged presidential campaign with marketing, strategy, bios, tv ads, debates, and the works. Amazing how they really got into it every time. #learnLAP
Structures of medial temporal lobe including hippocampus, entorhinal cortex and perirhinal cortex in conjunction with amygdala play pivotal role in declarative memory formation, memory consolidation and contextual fear memory formation.
#neuroscience#learnography#tlap#LearnLAP
Q6 Questions need to be clear, concise, and open ended. Keep asking "why" and "how." Ss can provide the right answer by rote or by guessing. Tell them to prove it. Ask "do you agree?" Let Ss explore to come to the answers themselves #learnlap

A5: in K we made a friendship snack 2 wks ago-first time trying & I wasn’t sure if they’d understand the metaphors in the story, but boy did they! Meaningful discussion and They are still talking abt how the marshmallows are kind/gentle &that we don’t want a “bad 🍌” #LearnLAP
A5 In exploring “What Matters?” my sophomores discovered they might have only two more years at home before moving and these family vacations will become rare. They wonder why they don’t spend more tome with family if family is #1 #LearnLAP

A7:my students and the community, 'experts' in the genre or topic
Kahoot, Khan academy, youtube, Spotify (gotta have music), and movies. I also love reading for a purpose but also at other times for fun too. I want to read to my class the Harry Potter series.
A6 I say let the students ask the questions in order to get the conversation sparks flying! Let them come up with a few questions for one another and create the discussion Then, just sit back and watch the learning take place!#LearnLAP
A7: Twitter is HUGE 4me. It has allowed me to find a #pln filled with like minded educators &has blessed me w/amazing authors 2read. I have read quite a few from @dbc_inc & have a wish list a mile long. I am always a learner. I strive to be better than I was yesterday #LearnLAP
A7 Twitter! Love chats like this that keep my curiosity going and want to keep growing. Always trying to grow my PLN. Also love watching my colleagues take risk and lead in incredibly powerful ways @RichHayzler@PCookTech@EScillieri#learnlap
A6: Love this Q! It looks like something that leaves room to explore. It doesn’t have a strictly constructed A because the work in constructing it is where the learning and retention happens. It is based in objectives and driven by S active involvement. #LearnLAP
A6: asking Qs always informs my instruction. I have a very reflective approach to asking my S. Qs. “What was easy/hard about —-?” or before an activity; “What might be easy or hard about—?””what would make — better?” I can make adjustments to enhance their learning #learnLAP
A bad banana? lol! This is great for teaching metaphors which can be difficult for them as they're (year 4) transitioning from concrete to abstract thinking. #learnLAP
A6 I’ve actually stopped asking questions in the traditional way. I start with students’ thoughts, questions, epiphanies and then we curate and discuss from that point. No question lists! #LearnLAP@cultofpedagogy did a podcast on it: https://t.co/RAXNWFzvgA
A8: I am starting a school blog where students, staff and parents will share stories about the great things happening in our schools. It is time to change the narrative on what people believe happens in schools. #LearnLAP@gcouros

We did this last year. We used pretzels for strong workers, marshmallows for soft/kind words, chocolate chips for sweet attitudes, cheerios for people who cheer each other one, smile fruit snacks for happy students, and then tried to add a rotten banana. It was great! #LearnLAP
A7: my #PLN on twitter sparks so many creative ideas and ways to engage my students! My K team & I collaborate often&I look to them for tips/tricks! Most importantly, Utilizing student choice/voice has yet to fail me or my class! #learnLAP
A8:Still a work in progress, but I want to do two things: 1. Pokemon themed lessons and 2. story-themed lessons. Both on teaching year 4 maths. #LearnLAP
A8: I’m involving more people from the community in our PBL units. So far, it has been a great experience. I’m trying not to be afraid to ask because the worst they can say is no. #LearnLAP
A8 VR/AR implementation. Has been on my #techdir list to make happen and I think I can get it done in a way that our Ts can actually, practically, effectively use it for lessons. Make #edtech work for you, not against! @debschi@njcybrarian#learnlap
A8: My foods Ss will create their own websites that they'll add to as the year goes on, incl. pics, how-to's blog posts, recipes, whathaveyou. It'll be a great personal portfolio of the year. We start tomorrow. Can't wait. #learnlap#RU_EDEL
Fantastic chat tonight everyone. Thanks to @RichHayzler for providing the spark to facilitate the entire thing. Remember to follow those whose ideas you find interesting and/or challenging! #learnlap

Thank you everyone for a great discussion and great memes. I just got a lot more excited about joining the classroom as an educator! Have a great night! #LearnLap
A8 I actually started this last year but had good feedback so I plan to build on it this year. I worked with our CST to do improvisation. It improved communication skills and helped them think on their feet. It was also great for team building! #learnlap
