Hi everyone! Jordan, 5th grade teacher from Princeton, NJ
Welcome! Thank you for joining us!
Good amount of teachers already here for
Who else is going to stop by? We're talking Task Cards
Hello ! 5th grade teacher from TX tuning in!
Hello! Thanks for stopping by.
Hi everyone! I'm Paul Solarz, 5th grade teacher from Westgate School enjoying paradise in Florida with family. :)
Hello, thanks for coming to
Adam, 5/6 social studies, Cleveland, OH! Enjoying my NBA championship!!
Good evening. Jackie from Sandston, VA
A1, so, yeah, what are they? Beyond the obvious, of course. They are cards. With tasks on them. What else? I'm curious.
Hey Celeste here 5th grade from Florida. Joining in for a bit.
A1: Not really sure. (Insert awkward face emoji.) I want to learn what they are & how they are used.
A1 - Good question! I'm looking forward to learning about task cards this evening! Haven't used them yet.
I use task cards with station work, I like them for getting Ss started without me explaining everything
A1) I like that task cards give clear directions on what students do and that they can be a bit more self directed.
A1: new concept to me! I'll be around to find out more about this!
Hello, my friend! Congrats to
A1: in kagan grouping to assign tasks to ensure all participate
We're here to help! Let's learn and have fun.
Glad you're here, Celeste!
A1: I do not use them in my classroom; and I am looking forward on learning how to use them and what they are all about.
Second that. The draw escapes me. There must be more to it.
A1: I used task cards in kindergarten for centers, but not yet in 5th. Hmmm. Interested.
Anyone have a photo of one they could tweet out?
I hope we can help you get started.
A1 I like to use them for Scoot or scavenger hunt format. Gets kids up and moving
A1 I like using task cards because it allows students to practice Math while moving around the room as opposed to just a worksheet
I would imagine that the task for fifth graders can be a bit more involved. https://t.co/e54GOXUphy
A1: I used task cards in kindergarten for centers, but not yet in 5th. Hmmm. Interested.
Carlos 6th 7th Math SA TX
A1: I love task cards because I can use them in a variety of ways + Ss never get tired of them…yet.
A1: I use some task cards for the game "scoot" and the kids absolutely love it!
What is scoot? You are the second person who mentioned it.
. Can you tell us a bit more about SCOOT. There are teachers who want to learn this evening.
Teaching with a Mountain View has several posts on her blog about task cards.
A2: I love self-checking cards (shown w/ QR code) b/c they give Ss an opportunity 2 measure their learning. https://t.co/QMCy2fAcSS
A2: generally during literacy centers and small group. It helps scaffold but can also differentiate without Ss knowing
Ok. Makes sense now. Definitely have seen and used them and made a few. Just didn't call them task cards.
Thanks Paul! I just downloaded a sample from as well.
I'm getting intrigued by this concept!
The site also has a free e-book that explains Task Cards and their uses. I downloaded mine :)
A3: I think it helps with engagement, as Ss can start right away and not rely on Ts to get started
A2) I do like task cards that have the students writing / recording. Though the self checking ones are good too!
. Thanks so much for sharing this link and helping us learn on
A3: Students are generally 100% engaged with task cards; however, I believe it’s important to vary task card activities.
A2: I like to use them with integers & order ops, ex: -4+6(5)
You will love them, trust me.
A3: yes, unless the student requires contant redirection&verbal questions like some of my ese kiddos, then their group is close 2 me
Oh yes! I like this idea!!
A3: Task Cards allow students to often work at their own pace.
A3 Depends on the quality of the tasks, but in general, there is a novelty to the cards that helps engagement
Q4 in a minute Wow! Time is flying here!
A3) I think that task cards can increase student engagement. I've given them the choice of multiple task cards.
. I've never used them, but I would imagine this is very true.
How do you create the tasks?
Love this insight. Thanks for sharing on
I love this. Thanks for sharing!
A3 I like to hide them around the room just to keep it interesting. Ss love that
Student choice is a great way to differentiate!
A3: engagement comes from the perception of the learning not being a over-drill type activity. Always involves moving around class
A4: If you allow Ss to choose their task cards for an activity
. You can choose between multiple choice, short answer, the sky's the limit. They're easy to make
Thanks. I like the idea of self-checking w/QR codes. I'll have to try this.
Love this idea! Thanks for sharing.
A4) Even the card could include a task for students to demonstrate their learning by making a video, foldable, or game.
That reminds me of menu choice boards. Like that.
A4: choice in tasks, how to model their understanding, and end products
There's a number of them that are premade too. Search "self checking task cards" https://t.co/oDBKGmT2nV
Thanks. I like the idea of self-checking w/QR codes. I'll have to try this.
A4: different level of cards allows students to choose, thus empowering them to participate in their own learning @ their own pace
We'll be discussing different task card activities in about 10 minutes.
I have one of those on my website for when Ss are finished with something
A4: When used in stations, task cards are always a hit. I give my class several options and that's always their first choice.
That's the one things I don't like about SCOOT, from ?s earlier, pace is set for everyone
A4: Depending on the types of cards, students can choose their activities, their tasks, or how many they want to complete.
Ss are able to choose where to start and if they want to work alone or with their peers.
Love this! It really allows them to take control of their learning.
A5: Some cards require to find the other half and work with that partner for the task
I save SCOOT for change of pace. It's not something I use frequently. Loses the fun.
A5) Task cards could include partner / group / collaborative work. It could include share your learning with 3 other students.
A5: This is theory since I'm new to this, but could have Ss directed to work together to complete task or check work.
A5: I believe task cards are perfect 4 partners or group work. They can be catalysts for discussions and complex problem-solving
Agree, Scoot is not appropriate for everything. Good point.
A5: Some task cards Ss have to complete alone, then extend with a partner. Sometimes they trades task cards to check work.
. Very true! Variety is important to task card success.
A5: create tasks that male them an expert at something and need each other to move fwd. Also promote team building
. Perfect! Please try them out. I truly think you'll enjoy them.
Students blog about their work. Some cards have students visiting other blogs, commenting, reflecting https://t.co/vNZcy3T6c5

MODERATORS NEEDED! Please consider moderating an upcoming . Let me know & I'll schedule you! https://t.co/L2r2sCuNSJ
love the idea about visiting other blogs!
Joe Eyres from Hercules SF Bay Area here
A6: For sure, people have mentioned QR codes, can also set up a website with virtual cards, or google forms that lead you places
A6: I really LOVE QR codes for self-checking! There are also Ts now using Google Slides to create digital task cards.
Welcome Joe! Hope you can attend Edcamp East Bay in Concord.

Joe Eyres from Hercules SF Bay Area here
This is an excellent idea!
A6.) I have put my task cards on Google classroom. I think they still have a place! Just make them digital!
LOL I had answered it briefly before.
Welcome to ! Thank you for joining us.
Good point...

A6.) I have put my task cards on Google classroom. I think they still have a place! Just make them digital!
Love this!!! Thank you for sharing.
A6: Absolutely! Tech gives Ts a faster and newer approach and allows students exposure to great resources using tech w task cards
A6: It's okay to disconnect with technology and use those 21st century skills face to face or in reflection on a regular basis.
A5) Students can still post work into a digital format. i.e. by taking a pic... making a video. Complete the task w/ or w/out tech.
A6) Students can still post work into a digital format. i.e. by taking a pic... making a video. Complete the task w/ or w/out tech.
You're absolutely right! Variety is important and they are other ways to "tech out."
Students love to color!!! sketch noting rocks https://t.co/eWrcyQGobg
A6: It's okay to disconnect with technology and use those 21st century skills face to face or in reflection on a regular basis.
Question 7 coming in a minute.
I just stumbled on this chat. I didn't know there was one for 5th grade Ts. Do you chat this time every Tues?
A6 Ss can record responses digitally. Still think there's a place for the physical cards though. Need balance in the classroom
A7: I love using task cards with board games
A7: I always like ones that make Ss think or build, create a floor plan with LEGO for area and perimeter is one of my favs
Hi Paul. I just did a chat on hands on science. I'd be happy to host one for if you want or have need
Yes, and different moderators at this time each week.
A7) Centers task cards where S work through self checking questions. (Back is a QR code). There's usually a gameboad involved.
A7: My fav activities are outdoors with measurement
A7: I use them in math stations and SCOOT mostly. I have used them for assessment on occasion.
A7: Turn the task card activities into Webquests for Literacy Circles Every member is held accountable, tech, & all play vital role
This is excellent. Getting them outside of the classroom is always a plus!
We had some with our previous reading seriesl. They'd have students acting out things, i.e. be a robot https://t.co/n0dVlk7jN0
A7: I use them in math stations and SCOOT mostly. I have used them for assessment on occasion.
Welcome aboard! This rocket launches every Tuesday at 8pm eastern time. https://t.co/mTlnCGXiCb
I just stumbled on this chat. I didn't know there was one for 5th grade Ts. Do you chat this time every Tues?
Drama Circles! Love doing those!
Question Eight coming in a minute.
A7: use task cards from mission control to Mars colony during space unit!
Love this type of activity! Thanks for sharing.
A8: I think allowing Ts to develop task cards based on their subject area is a great use of PD time.
A8: If they are relevant and not something to kill time. They should be modeled correctly, engaging, and something Ts can learn from
A8) Sure, when exploring a few different apps, you can put task cards at a station for teachers to follow.
A8 If you use task cards correctly as a tool it should work. It is all in the way you present it.
A8 Would love it if PD was differentiated like task cards are!
What is SCOOT? Teachers place a card at each desk, and Ss move from desk to desk to complete tasks in certain amount of time.
I think it depends upon the PD. But it would be a great way to model for other teachers.
A8 I am going to do a for teachers as a PD to show them all the tech tools next year.
Very true. Modeling is key.
Question Nine coming in a minute.
. Ooh, would love to see this! Love
will this chat be archived so that I can catch up?
I will share it as soon as it is finished. I am excited about it.
Yes, they do archive the chat after it is complete. has more details.
A9) Share task cards with them. Explain how we've used it with the students. Have students design more task cards. Repeat.
Awesome Dawn! Thanks! I'll get you signed up. :) (ANY OTHER TAKERS WILLING TO MODERATE AN UPCOMING ?) https://t.co/0sGJ8GtVbL
I can do July 26th.
We'll discuss hands on science.
A9: By sharing results and success with them. Ss testimonials of what they like about task cards helps too!
A9: I invite other teachers to my room to watch us in action!
A9: Encourage them to watch your class and offer to lend task cards, this way they are not overwhelmed w creating their own at first
Q9: I think modeling and allowing Ts to develop task cards based on their subject area during PD time will help
A9 Model them. Help them see that it is not just one more thing; instead it is a way to enhance their lessons.
Love that willingness to share and collaborate. It helps all of us succeed!
we are on a role--- we have so many of the same responses. you are my Tweet Twin :)
This is a great way to do it. I have often used students to get teachers excited about something.
I love for other teachers to observe so they can tell me what I'm doing right and what needs to be improved upon.
A10: When presenting task cards it would be beneficial to start small, bring to PLC or Dept. Meeting and model, lend, and encourage
Thanks! I'll be more punctual next time!
A10 Creating task cards to make lessons more hands on and incorporating it with my lessons.
A10) Think it's time to up my Task Card game. Look to move some things digitally
I need to try some digital task cards as well.
Thank you for moderating the chat tonight! Thanks everyone.
A10:That it's great to collaborate with others!
Awesome idea. Google slides would be a great way to do that.
Thanks! I appreciate you for participating and helping us learn!
I can moderate July 26th, maybe do global collaboration projects? Maybe even collaborate to set one up?
Thanks to for moderating this evening! What an AWESOME chat!
Great chat tonight I hate I missed the first half.
thanks for the great chat! I don't know how you keep up! Awesome job!
Another awesome chance to get invigorated! Thank you! cu around
