Heym #TECHtalkGA! I'm Angela, Dist ITS for MS/HS + French 1 T in Forsyth Co! I'm certainly not on par with @thomascmurray, but I think it's important to think FORWARD, be INNOVATIVE, & find SOLUTIONS to the things we want changed.

  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:04 PM EDT
A1: Hey there everyone! I'm Nadia, from @CobbSchools, where I serve as the Digital Learning Coordinator for the district. The key to designing tomorrow's schools today is communication, IMO. Provide space for all stakeholders (esp. Ss and Ts) to design and create. #TECHtalkGA

  • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:04 PM EDT
Mike Afdahl, dir of tech, Calhoun city. I think the key is empowering teachers to design learning spaces and experiences focused on 4 c’s #TECHtalkGA
  • kdhtigerpaw Oct 29 @ 9:04 PM EDT
A1: Kim Hoy, secondary math instruction coach for Hart County Charter System. One key is preparing students for future careers that do not exist today by giving them opportunities for problem solving and communication. #TECHtalkGA
  • iamryanwhite Oct 29 @ 9:05 PM EDT
#techtalkga A1 Ryan White, lead #edtech learner from #floydpln. I think that opportunity is the most important way to level the playing field. Schools that build relationships with students and create/maintain opportunities are the key for designing schools.
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:05 PM EDT
A1: Howdy #TECHtalkGA I'm Jaki Day an Instructional tech with Floyd co schools. Wow, the future of school has to be more about student learning and less about teachers teaching. I have loved self organized learning environments. Check out: https://t.co/I7V8PjDlf9
  • DeborahHuggard Oct 29 @ 9:05 PM EDT
A1: Deborah, Dawson county HS, media and tech specialist, leaders need to help others find and use their individual strengths. Learning AND leading should be collaborative efforts! #TECHtalkGA
  • TeachandCoachGA Oct 29 @ 9:05 PM EDT
A1: Daniel from Forsyth County. Content Specialist for Forsyth Virtual Academy. The key to designing tomorrows schools is developing and creating amazing interactive content for student. We have to get rid of the sit and get model. #TECHtalkGA
  • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:06 PM EDT
Q2 it starts with an awareness of why privacy is important, and basic steps on protecting info. #TECHtalkGA
  • StreamRMS Oct 29 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: Sarah Stream/Forsyth County Schools/Science teacher. I think the key is teaching students to use technology in a way that empowers them rather than addicts them. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:06 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A2: We have started SERIOUSLY addressing this issue with EVERYONE this year. While it started out as terrifying & left everyone feeling like "welp no tech" we have found a great tool to help everyone navigate the murky waters in @EdFramework
  • ehlmstech Oct 29 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1: Evonne, Catoosa County. CS and Connections classes in Middle School. #TECHtalkGA
  • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A2b. Simple step is to create a district list of vetted apps/sites that are safe and supported. Lots of resources out there to get started (don’t need to recreate the wheel) #TECHtalkGA
  • iamryanwhite Oct 29 @ 9:08 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A2 data, data, data Always be cognizant of where stakeholder data is stored and how they may use it. Read privacy policies, MOUs, and make sure they have data breach insurance. Don't give data away to 3rd parties without completing due diligence.
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A2: One factor that I think is often overlooked in protecting student privacy is teaching Ss how to guard their info as they navigate digital spaces (especially on the internet). 1 oz prevention = 1 lb. of cure! #TECHtalkGA Great tie-in to the questions @MmeBurgess!
    In reply to @MmeBurgess, @mrhooker, @thomascmurray, @PlayWell_LLC, @MmeBurgess
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A2: #TECHtalkGA I do think it is important to train teachers how to look into the privacy setting of apps and sites they may use in class. @CommonSenseEd has an entire tab devoted to this on their website. I show this to Tchs.
  • TeachandCoachGA Oct 29 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A2: I am going to "borrow" @MmeBurgess statement. The @EdFramework is very helpful in determining what is safe for student use. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:10 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q3: The worst sight ever when leading PL is glazed eyes or active disengagement. As a tech leader, how do you keep tech-focused PL fun & engaging? Make sure to catch @teach42’s session called “Fear the Sitting Dead: Bring PD Back to Life” on Fri at 8:30a in Salon 2!
  • gabolhuis Oct 29 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A2: Share about data with Principals, APs, Parents, and teachers without using "Tech language". Most principals don't know what a EULA is....we need to take time to explain these things. #TECHtalkGA
  • Angela_LaPlante Oct 29 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Hi all! I’m an IT Coach in Savannah. IMHO the key to designing schools is to focus on the kids #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:10 PM EDT
They're certainly my favorite go-to resources for teaching Digital Citizenship too! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @jdayedu, @CommonSenseEd
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:10 PM EDT
YES!! And we have to make that a conscious effort in our practice! How to use it for productivity, not just distraction! They have to be TAUGHT that - it doesn't come naturally! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @StreamRMS
  • StreamRMS Oct 29 @ 9:10 PM EDT
A2: *taking notes here as I had not thought about it* #itecstudent #shouldprobsthinkaboutthisnow #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:11 PM EDT
    Another great resource! #TECHtalkGA
  • gabolhuis Oct 29 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A3: I try to give them small tasks and only a digestible amount of information. Nothing's worse than having isolated "tech training" when Ts cannot see HOW this information is useful. #TECHtalkGA
  • ehlmstech Oct 29 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A2: Can we please teach Ts to first follow the rules outlined by county/district policy? #TECHtalkGA
  • StreamRMS Oct 29 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A3: Short, sweet, and USABLE! As somebody who is still on the teaching side of things (and has just barely started running PDs), don’t waste an hour of my time if I can’t leave the room and immediately use something you just taught me. #TECHtalkGA
  • iamryanwhite Oct 29 @ 9:12 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A3 I think that giving teachers choice and relevance is key to good PL. They need skin in the game.
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A3: I keep PD fun and engaging by remembering what I enjoy and what I dislike when a participant in a session. Music, jokes, opportunities to respond, and getting first-hand experience with something new are many of my go-to strategies. #TECHtalkGA
  • Angela_LaPlante Oct 29 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A3 PL is more engaging when the teachers take on the role of student. Give them the hyperdoc, assign them a well packaged digital learning experience. #TECHtalkGA
  • TeachandCoachGA Oct 29 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A3: Try to avoid large group presentation. Effective ed tech sharing takes place in small settings. Large group settings are less than ideal. However, if needed humor goes a long way, and providing time for teachers to actually use the tech. #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:13 PM EDT
MANY ppl in education don't know what it is! If we talk about it, we should be prepared to explain it! #my2cents #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @gabolhuis
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Most definitely. It's hard to buy into something you haven't been invited to connect with. #TECHtalkGA

Instructional Technology Coordinator for Elbert County and late for the party #techtalkga
  • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A3: ice breaker, music, candy, and interactive. I also remind myself that depth and not breadth is important. #TECHtalkGA
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A3 #TECHtalkGA I had success with teacher engagement using the same tools I encourage to help with Ss engagement . Today, I used @PearDeck I'm Google Slides.
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:14 PM EDT
It'll come! If @KSUITEC isn't teaching it now, they will...and if not, you'll just be ahead of the game! :) #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @StreamRMS, @KSUITEC
  • kdhtigerpaw Oct 29 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A3: I work with an awesome team of instructional coaches. We always try to make learning fun and engaging for teachers by offering choices, differentiation, and active options. We even bring in games/play to engage. #TECHtalkGA #onehartbeat
  • gabolhuis Oct 29 @ 9:15 PM EDT
This is so important. Relationships are built in this space. There's room for questions and for people to "catch up" if they get behind or didn't quite catch it the first time.
#TECHtalkGA

#TECHtalkGA Q4: Building a culture of digital citizenship isn’t a one person job - it’s embedded in what we ALL do. What do you do in your role to model & encourage this? Don’t miss @sgarton121 on Thurs at 8am in Salon 3 as he talks about practical steps to make this happen!
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:16 PM EDT
    #TECHtalkGA yes, candy. 😊😊
    • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A3: ice breaker, music, candy, and interactive. I also remind myself that depth and not breadth is important. #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Oct 29 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2: I like @mycalfdoll answer of having vetted resources. I also think that it is very important to have a walled garden for our students. And like @iamryanwhite read read the MOUs and make sure to ask questions and don't be scared to ask for help. #itsabigdeal #techtalkga
  • DeborahHuggard Oct 29 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Q3: PL should be specific, relevant and provide more immersion and practice than a T could get by simply following a link themselves. #TECHtalkGA
  • DeborahHuggard Oct 29 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Entertainment and food is helpful, but if Ts don’t think the topic might help them in their CR we lose them before we even start ( note the backup grading they bring “just in case”! #TECHtalkGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:17 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA A3: Not to toot my own horn (which I'm asking you all to do), but I try to stay informal, to keep the lang familiar & fun, and to build in opps for interaction, exploration, etc.
  • ehlmstech Oct 29 @ 9:17 PM EDT
Sometimes this backfires - small groups often don't know the subject and I get frustrated listening to what everyone is doing - I want to learn something new. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @TeachandCoachGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Ugh...show me how to make THAT happen and I'll show you your path to financial freedom LOL #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @ehlmstech
  • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A4: each k-12 homeroom teacher is responsible for teaching 5 lessons. @CommonSenseEd lessons are used and teachers have flexibility to expand. #TECHtalkGA
  • gabolhuis Oct 29 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4: We encourage all our media specialists to teach @CommonSenseED digital citizenship lessons and several have earned CSE certification this year. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @MmeBurgess, @sgarton121, @CommonSenseEd
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4: #TECHtalkGA @CommonSenseEd best site on the planet..in my humble opinion
  • StreamRMS Oct 29 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A4: I feel like I have a weird/terrible advantage as a millennial here because I deal with the realities of tech addiction and social media/data faux pas every day. I tell my kids the implications of their tech lives because I’ve grown up with it. #TECHtalkGA
  • TeachandCoachGA Oct 29 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A4: @Nearpod has great content regarding Digital Citizenship! #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3: I aim to remind my colleagues that digital citizenship is like face to face citizenship, but it's also a continuous learning process. Think ahead. Follow the golden rule. Observe the norms. Don't be afraid to ask and research. #TECHtalkGA
  • ClintWinter Oct 29 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3: I think one of the most powerful ways is to keep it relevant! Based on some ideas from ts @ECCHSAPGOV we are going to offer differentianted PL on Thursday and have choice. Lucky for folks like @dyesjr and @jasonkouns73 to help organize and make this happen. #techtalkga
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Yes! I'm doing this too! I'm trying more and more to apply what worked in my classroom to my edtech PL. In that way, I'm modeling also! #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @jdayedu, @PearDeck
  • Angela_LaPlante Oct 29 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A4- I try to model feedback, encouragement, and threaded convo during online sessions hosted in GC. #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:21 PM EDT

    In reply to @DeborahHuggard
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:23 PM EDT
I think it's always helpful to have different levels of small groups...sometimes by age-group or content area...and then later by skill-level. #TECHtalkGA
    In reply to @ehlmstech, @TeachandCoachGA
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:24 PM EDT
#TECHtalkGA Q5: Leaders also work to ensure digital equity. This is equally true for digital use & opportunity as it is access. How do you bridge the gap to tackle dig eq? @msEdtechie will talk about how STEM can help w/this on Thurs at 8am in Salon 1! Add it to your schedule!
  • ClintWinter Oct 29 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3 Con't: I also think that PL has to answer the why question. The framework I really have seen to stick is SAMR. SAMR helps frame and answer the question when using Technology with students and teachers #techtalkga. Also a killer music playlist from @Spotify helps
  • MmeBurgess - Moderator Oct 29 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Yes, for sure! And that message needs to be more prevalent! We *need* teachers like you to TEACH students (and sometimes adults!) how to manage their tech use! #TECHtalkGA
#TECHtalkGA

SAMR in Australia Wednesday after the keynote #techtalkga. . .
  • gabolhuis Oct 29 @ 9:26 PM EDT
#TECHTalkGA A5: I worked in a school where students would walk to campus and stand outside to complete their work on the schools' WiFi. I hope that one day schools are open longer hours and serve more stakeholders in a day.
  • mycalfdoll Oct 29 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A5: I shared this earlier, but it addresses a tech divide. Makes you think about what is effective use of tech. #TECHtalkGA https://t.co/aiU7aUhgu0
  • TeachandCoachGA Oct 29 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A5: In my online courses, students are required to have a computer and internet access. However, within the course, I only use free resources for students. I buy cool stuff to deliver content, but everything they consume or produce is always free. #TECHtalkGA
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:26 PM EDT
  • iamryanwhite Oct 29 @ 9:27 PM EDT
#techtalkga A5 Having a solid human and technical infrastructure is the first step. Ensuring/maintaining access to online resources and devices is next.
  • GillianRiley00 Oct 29 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Hi all! I saw my colleague @Angela_LaPlante chatting so thought I’d say hello! Instructional technology coach -Savannah #techtalkga

I just tried to blow in it like a Nintendo game. Spoiler alert...it didn't work. #TECHtalkGA
  • MsWillipedia Oct 29 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A5: Digital Equity opens up such a multi faceted conversation. In my classroom days, I offered options for accessing digital content at school if home access wasn't available. Lessons (for Ss and Ts) can also be put in offline form so the info is still accessible. #TECHtalkGA
  • jdayedu Oct 29 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Q5 #TECHtalkGA I think this is truly a whole education issue. Tech inequality is just one symptom of a larger educational inequality Actually, I think community libraries and other sites have done a lot to help with tech equity.
  • TeachandCoachGA Oct 29 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Free to students, but the county has already purchased it. If it hasn't been purchased, it is approved first. I agree. You have to check your bases. #TECHtalkGA

A5: Teachers sharing devices is proving problematic for equity. ELA, science, social studies standards reference tech use for research, writing, publishing. That seems like a reasonable place to concentrate. What will it take to accomplish the standard? #TECHtalkGA
