#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
R1: I cannot sit around my house and do nothing. I don’t work that way. I have to be busy! I honestly will be ready to go back to school on June 4. #NVedchat
A1: That we actually get the time off! Sure, we all plan vacations and aren't tied to a schedule as strictly, but what good teacher really takes the summer off? #nvedchat
R1: I think so many people think we sit around and don’t do anything, yet collect a paycheck. I had a neighbor tell me that I have a pretty “cush” job because I get paid well and only work 180 days. I laughed and said “not so much...” #NVedchat
A1-That educators don't do anything during the summer. Many folks attend conferences, PD, start planning for next year, etc... Education is Life! :-) #NVedchat
A1 This one's easy! That we have the summers off! I'm sure some teachers completely turn off their teacher brain, but I'm pretty sure most of us haven't found that switch yet! And why would you want to with all the great training opportunities! #NVedchat
I had this conversation with someone a while back and they could not grasp the fact that my 9 month contract's pay was spread out over 12 months #nvedchat
Sometimes school is the safe pace for them. It’s a cool spot where they get to eat and feel cared about. We assume those students like being out of school...they desperately want our attention. #NVedchat
It's the same thing for those kids that stay after school when you would assume they would be sprinting for the door to do something other than hang out at school #nvedchat
A1: That Ss need summer homework. I do believe in learning over ☀️but through independent reading/inquiry/imagination/exploration. Understand it’s hard for all kids, though. #NVedchat
A2-I would say reflecting during the summer and putting a plan in place to make next school year better than the previous one for students, teachers, admin, everyone... #NVEdChat
A2: Attending conferences is always great to get together with others. I learn more from the people I interact with than the PD presentations many times. I feel a "get together" should be required half way through the year to share ideas in person #NVedchat
R2: I am attending #ElevateDIndy at the end of July. It’s an opportunity to network, get new ideas, see old friends, hear from great presenters like @PrincipalKafele, and get certified as a district mentor. #NVedchat
q2: I loved learning during the summer. Meeting with other teacher friends and brainstorming, bookchatting, and researching/reading everything I could get my hands on.
#nvedchat
A2 Conferences are my biggest source of inspiration. I actually love reworking curriculum, but there's only so much you can change/innovate without the spark you get him interacting with and learning from other educators. #NVedchat
R2: since I’m teaching my first AP course next year, I have to gear up for this. Also build additional curriculum, design my course work on @CanvasLMS, an revise my biology curriculum. Always tweaking, revising, adding additional content. #NVedchat
Ha. I leave each one of these chats and come up with something different. Then throw the podcast listening into it. I’m shocked it looks anything the same from year to year. #NVedchat
R3: in @ltgoodnews, we do a virtual summer school where about 1200 students will take classes that allow them to free their schedule for AP courses, tech courses, @PLTWorg courses at @MCiTech, upper level science, ELA, math, etc. #NVedchat
A3: Rebrand as “Summer Advancement” or “Summer Success”. My daughter is excited to take an extra CTE elective next year because of summer school. #NVedchat
A3 Part 2: My school is encouraging students to complete summer school by shortening their assignment to behavior school or a return to comprehensive school next fall with successful completion of summer school #nvedchat
A3 Growing up, my school (where I now teach) offered summer classes where elementary students did STEM activities (before it was a thing.) It was a blast! What if we focused more on pbl activities for summer school (and in general)? #NVedchat
A4: I think the 9 month model is grossly outdated. More a year round model will help students retain what they have learned and make the transitions to the following grade much easier #nvedchat
R4: we do a balanced calendar where we start the first of August, have a 1-2 week break after Quarter 1. We then have a 2 week break at semester. Third quarter takes place with a 1-2 week spring break (some schools use the first week as snow makeup days). 1/2 #NVedchat
A4-Our U.S. School Calendar system is based on agriculture I believe so that students could go work on the farms. Not so much in today. Yes...we should seriously change the length of breaks from school.
Maybe not a complete year round model, but something different #NVedchat
Just peeking my head in after getting back from my son's 8th grade orchestra concert. Having been a parent of a grade school student on the year-round CCSD schedule, super-interested in Q4 responses. #nvedchat
Where I grew up, it was about having the kids available to help in the strawberry, bean, and corn fields, and then there was also haying season, but I also believe more breaks in the year make for better learners and teachers #nvedchat
A4 For once, I'm going to consider myself old school. Full disclosure, I've got no research to support my opinion, but I'm all for long summers. It gives people on the tech side much needed time to get caught up and prep for the next year. Plus, I love summer 😋
#NVedchat
Check out Washoe County's schedule, they go back the first week of August and don't get out until the first week of June because of their breaks #nvedchat
I grew up in Michigan, and that's what they did there, but some schools are requesting waivers to start earlier because of fall sports seasons #nvedchat
When I was admin, my contract was 260 days. Summer break? What’s that?? I like not having any major expectations, get I still end up working. #NVedchat
Pick 1 or 2 things you would like to work on for next school year and begin to learn or plan about them. Don’t do nothing and don’t do too much. You need to recharge the battery. #NVedchat
Forgot to tag this - Q3: Have summer school be totally #personalized#competencybasedlearning experiences. That's what these kiddos need! Summer School - everyday school should be about THEIR learning, how they learn and meet them where they are. #NVedchat
A5: Relax, recharge, enjoy spending time on things that interest you, reflect, wk on ideas, lrn and set some time out to plan or tweak lessons for next yr. #NVedchat
What if...summer and breaks were a #GeniusBreak type situation. May take awhile to adopt...however, I think would yield some awesome results! #NVedchat
It’s not like that everywhere, only paces where you are an admin 24/7. Worst was when I was attending my grandmother’s funeral and a bus accident happened with my Ss on a weekend, I was 300 miles away, and was still doing admin stuff. My kids were fine. #NVedchat
Nevada's new anti-bullying law requires an admin be on duty 24/7 to respond to reports on the online system. I'm not sure how it works, I left admin before it came down #nvedchat
Yes! We have to use our data to plan our instruction however, Ts can plan/sketch out units. Then use their data to meet the standards they are teaching within that unit. #NVedchat
We had that also here in Indiana. If it is reported, we had 24 HRs 2 respond 2 complaint. That didn’t mean we had 24 HRs 2 investigate. Some places try 2 get whole thing done in 24 HRs. It’s tough on the weekend/break. If there is no response, schools are liable. #NVedchat
A3 Summer school can be a great way to get ahead. We need to advertise it in a positive light. @SNWPEducators is an awesome way to spend a summer. My own children loved attending, and@I loved teaching it😊 #nvedchat
A3: Rebrand as “Summer Advancement” or “Summer Success”. My daughter is excited to take an extra CTE elective next year because of summer school. #NVedchat
