  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:03 PM EDT
R1: I cannot sit around my house and do nothing. I don’t work that way. I have to be busy! I honestly will be ready to go back to school on June 4. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator May 14 @ 10:03 PM EDT
I miss the interaction with Students, and Teachers the most. It is so energizing at times...all the collaborations, etc... #NVedchat

Least favorite: the laundry AFTER a beach vacation. But it’s worth it. #NVedchat
  • DanKos3 May 14 @ 10:04 PM EDT
    Nothing…#NVedchat
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:04 PM EDT
q1: sleep in. I know that sounds lame, but I feel I lose so much of the day - to play! #nvedchat
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:04 PM EDT
Thanks for the reminder, @LCHS_Bio! I'm with everyone else. I have to stay busy; I hate feeling unproductive. #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:04 PM EDT
Q1: What do you feel is the biggest summer myth about education in general? #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:04 PM EDT
I'm with you! I'm not a huge fan of the beach to begin with, mainly because I can't do the sand everywhere thing #nvedchat
    In reply to @SJteaches
  • BonanzaFire May 14 @ 10:05 PM EDT
A1: Well, since it about 105' come 9am, there isn't much to do during the day... so might as well triple up on my Master classes #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:05 PM EDT
A1: That we actually get the time off! Sure, we all plan vacations and aren't tied to a schedule as strictly, but what good teacher really takes the summer off? #nvedchat
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:06 PM EDT
Q1; Myth: Students love having the whole summer off from school. #nvedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:06 PM EDT
R1: I think so many people think we sit around and don’t do anything, yet collect a paycheck. I had a neighbor tell me that I have a pretty “cush” job because I get paid well and only work 180 days. I laughed and said “not so much...” #NVedchat
  • Dale_Chu May 14 @ 10:07 PM EDT
HAPPENING NOW: @NevadaEdChat moderating a chat on summer myths in education. Follow along at #NVedchat!
  • DanKos3 May 14 @ 10:07 PM EDT
That we don’t do anything during summer…teaching a class, doing 2 PD courses, mentoring pre-service teachers, and who knows what else…#NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator May 14 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1-That educators don't do anything during the summer. Many folks attend conferences, PD, start planning for next year, etc... Education is Life! :-) #NVedchat
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:07 PM EDT
A1 This one's easy! That we have the summers off! I'm sure some teachers completely turn off their teacher brain, but I'm pretty sure most of us haven't found that switch yet! And why would you want to with all the great training opportunities! #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:07 PM EDT
I had this conversation with someone a while back and they could not grasp the fact that my 9 month contract's pay was spread out over 12 months #nvedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:08 PM EDT
Sometimes school is the safe pace for them. It’s a cool spot where they get to eat and feel cared about. We assume those students like being out of school...they desperately want our attention. #NVedchat
    In reply to @_debboliver
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
It's the same thing for those kids that stay after school when you would assume they would be sprinting for the door to do something other than hang out at school #nvedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio, @_debboliver
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
I would say that it is less than 10% that do this. #NVedchat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Q2: Educators attend conferences, work on curriculum, & other activities during summer. What’s your most beneficial one & Why? #NVedchat
  • SJteaches May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
A1: That Ss need summer homework. I do believe in learning over ☀️but through independent reading/inquiry/imagination/exploration. Understand it’s hard for all kids, though. #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
A2: Summer is when I get my reading in, I'll be doing master's classes this summer, trying to get as much done before the crazy starts again #nvedchat
    • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Q2: Educators attend conferences, work on curriculum, & other activities during summer. What’s your most beneficial one & Why? #NVedchat
  • DanKos3 May 14 @ 10:10 PM EDT
Conferences/PD - I learn so much at them to try in the classroom. #NVedchat
    • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Q2: Educators attend conferences, work on curriculum, & other activities during summer. What’s your most beneficial one & Why? #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator May 14 @ 10:10 PM EDT
A2-I would say reflecting during the summer and putting a plan in place to make next school year better than the previous one for students, teachers, admin, everyone... #NVEdChat
  • BonanzaFire May 14 @ 10:10 PM EDT
A2: Attending conferences is always great to get together with others. I learn more from the people I interact with than the PD presentations many times. I feel a "get together" should be required half way through the year to share ideas in person #NVedchat
    • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Q2: Educators attend conferences, work on curriculum, & other activities during summer. What’s your most beneficial one & Why? #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:11 PM EDT
R2: I am attending #ElevateDIndy at the end of July. It’s an opportunity to network, get new ideas, see old friends, hear from great presenters like @PrincipalKafele, and get certified as a district mentor. #NVedchat
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:11 PM EDT
q2: I loved learning during the summer. Meeting with other teacher friends and brainstorming, bookchatting, and researching/reading everything I could get my hands on. #nvedchat
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:11 PM EDT
A2 Conferences are my biggest source of inspiration. I actually love reworking curriculum, but there's only so much you can change/innovate without the spark you get him interacting with and learning from other educators. #NVedchat
  • SJteaches May 14 @ 10:11 PM EDT
A3: I’ve enjoyed working for the National Writing Project for scoring i3 college ready essays& running summer camps for @SNWPEducators. #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:13 PM EDT
R2: since I’m teaching my first AP course next year, I have to gear up for this. Also build additional curriculum, design my course work on @CanvasLMS, an revise my biology curriculum. Always tweaking, revising, adding additional content. #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:13 PM EDT
And only so much you can do without students to test it on #nvedchat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Q3: Summer school still has a negative meaning for some...How can we change public perception of it? #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:14 PM EDT
Ha. I leave each one of these chats and come up with something different. Then throw the podcast listening into it. I’m shocked it looks anything the same from year to year. #NVedchat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A3: Make it an opportunity to get better rather than punishment for past mistakes? #nvedchat
  • carr_8 May 14 @ 10:15 PM EDT
Heidi from Las Vegas and I am late to the party. Trying to watch the game. :) #nvedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:15 PM EDT
    We all are haha #Nvedchat
    In reply to @carr_8
  • DanKos3 May 14 @ 10:16 PM EDT
Often it is used a credit recovery. When extension courses for credit are offered and Ss can get ahead it changes the meaning. #NVedchat
  • carr_8 May 14 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A3: I think we need to train our families and community abt why Ss go to summer school. Summer school's meaning has changed over the yrs. #NVEdChat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:16 PM EDT
R3: in @ltgoodnews, we do a virtual summer school where about 1200 students will take classes that allow them to free their schedule for AP courses, tech courses, @PLTWorg courses at @MCiTech, upper level science, ELA, math, etc. #NVedchat
  • SJteaches May 14 @ 10:16 PM EDT
A3: Rebrand as “Summer Advancement” or “Summer Success”. My daughter is excited to take an extra CTE elective next year because of summer school. #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A3 Part 2: My school is encouraging students to complete summer school by shortening their assignment to behavior school or a return to comprehensive school next fall with successful completion of summer school #nvedchat
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A3 Growing up, my school (where I now teach) offered summer classes where elementary students did STEM activities (before it was a thing.) It was a blast! What if we focused more on pbl activities for summer school (and in general)? #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:18 PM EDT
Q4-Should summer be shorter with more breaks throughout the school year? Why or why not? #NVedchat
  • carr_8 May 14 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A2: Each of the different conferences/classes I attend each have a different impact as well as meet different needs. #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A4: I think the 9 month model is grossly outdated. More a year round model will help students retain what they have learned and make the transitions to the following grade much easier #nvedchat
  • DanKos3 May 14 @ 10:19 PM EDT
Research says that is better. I am for it. Less time to have learning loss=better retention. Too bad it’s about tourism workforce. #NVedchat
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:19 PM EDT
I've NEVER understood the desire to keep the same lessons year after year... Forget the kids, even I would be bored! #nvedchat
    In reply to @LCHS_Bio
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:19 PM EDT
And that is how you answer Winnipeg's goal, way to go Marchessault! #nvedchat #GoKnightsGO #VegasBorn
  • SJteaches May 14 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A4: I’ve attended, taught and had kids in year round, and I say no. Like the consistency 9 full months. #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:20 PM EDT
R4: we do a balanced calendar where we start the first of August, have a 1-2 week break after Quarter 1. We then have a 2 week break at semester. Third quarter takes place with a 1-2 week spring break (some schools use the first week as snow makeup days). 1/2 #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator May 14 @ 10:20 PM EDT
A4-Our U.S. School Calendar system is based on agriculture I believe so that students could go work on the farms. Not so much in today. Yes...we should seriously change the length of breaks from school. Maybe not a complete year round model, but something different #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:20 PM EDT
R4: Quarter 4 usually ends at the end of May (we finish May 30). That leaves an 8 week summer. 2/2 #NVedchat
  • thedullguy May 14 @ 10:21 PM EDT
Just peeking my head in after getting back from my son's 8th grade orchestra concert. Having been a parent of a grade school student on the year-round CCSD schedule, super-interested in Q4 responses. #nvedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:21 PM EDT
Where I grew up, it was about having the kids available to help in the strawberry, bean, and corn fields, and then there was also haying season, but I also believe more breaks in the year make for better learners and teachers #nvedchat
    In reply to @DanKos3
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A4 For once, I'm going to consider myself old school. Full disclosure, I've got no research to support my opinion, but I'm all for long summers. It gives people on the tech side much needed time to get caught up and prep for the next year. Plus, I love summer 😋 #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:22 PM EDT
I should note that my district takes a 1 week break for fall, then take a week for Thanksgiving. Quarter 2 flies with this schedule. #NVedchat
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:23 PM EDT
Year Round schools have proven to be beneficial, yet some HS students need the longer summer for jobs. #nvedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:23 PM EDT
Check out Washoe County's schedule, they go back the first week of August and don't get out until the first week of June because of their breaks #nvedchat
    In reply to @Snehalstocks
  • CUENV May 14 @ 10:23 PM EDT
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:23 PM EDT
Q5: What advice would you give someone new to education about what to during the summer? #NVedchat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:23 PM EDT
I grew up in Michigan, and that's what they did there, but some schools are requesting waivers to start earlier because of fall sports seasons #nvedchat
    In reply to @DanKos3
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:24 PM EDT
When I was admin, my contract was 260 days. Summer break? What’s that?? I like not having any major expectations, get I still end up working. #NVedchat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:25 PM EDT
Reflect, reflect, reflect - then jump in and learn something new! Socialize/learn with other educators #NVedchat
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:26 PM EDT
R5: look a things you can do differently. Reach out to those that have experience and attend PD workshops. #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator May 14 @ 10:26 PM EDT
    10000% Agree! #NVedchat
  • DanKos3 May 14 @ 10:26 PM EDT
Pick 1 or 2 things you would like to work on for next school year and begin to learn or plan about them. Don’t do nothing and don’t do too much. You need to recharge the battery. #NVedchat
    In reply to @NevadaEdChat
  • AndersonEdTech May 14 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A5: Make time for yourself to have fun and relax, but definitely set aside time for reflection and learning #nvedchat
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:27 PM EDT
Forgot to tag this - Q3: Have summer school be totally #personalized #competencybasedlearning experiences. That's what these kiddos need! Summer School - everyday school should be about THEIR learning, how they learn and meet them where they are. #NVedchat
  • carr_8 May 14 @ 10:27 PM EDT
A5: Relax, recharge, enjoy spending time on things that interest you, reflect, wk on ideas, lrn and set some time out to plan or tweak lessons for next yr. #NVedchat
  • NevadaEdChat - Moderator May 14 @ 10:28 PM EDT
Thank you for joining tonight’s #NVedchat on Summer Myths! Don't forget to follow the awesome tweeters from tonight... ...and #GoKnightsGo #Vegasborn
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:29 PM EDT
I’ll piggyback on this. Make it a #GeniusHour style course. Tie standards for content, but let Ss drive the focus. #NVedchat
    In reply to @_debboliver
  • carr_8 May 14 @ 10:29 PM EDT
A1: That we get paid....Many people forget the pay we get over summer is pay we already earned during the school yr. #NVedchat
  • _debboliver May 14 @ 10:29 PM EDT
Have a fun rest of the school year! #NVedchat
  • letscreatemoore May 14 @ 10:30 PM EDT
A5 Don't plan a full year at once! Take it slow and be willing to change plans as necessary. And have fun! #NVedchat
  • Snehalstocks - Moderator May 14 @ 10:30 PM EDT
What if...summer and breaks were a #GeniusBreak type situation. May take awhile to adopt...however, I think would yield some awesome results! #NVedchat

For sure. If it's about meeting students where they are- how can you plan the whole year?! #nvedchat
    In reply to @letscreatemoore
  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:31 PM EDT
It’s not like that everywhere, only paces where you are an admin 24/7. Worst was when I was attending my grandmother’s funeral and a bus accident happened with my Ss on a weekend, I was 300 miles away, and was still doing admin stuff. My kids were fine. #NVedchat

Nevada's new anti-bullying law requires an admin be on duty 24/7 to respond to reports on the online system. I'm not sure how it works, I left admin before it came down #nvedchat

  • carr_8 May 14 @ 10:34 PM EDT
Yes! We have to use our data to plan our instruction however, Ts can plan/sketch out units. Then use their data to meet the standards they are teaching within that unit. #NVedchat

  • LCHS_Bio May 14 @ 10:37 PM EDT
We had that also here in Indiana. If it is reported, we had 24 HRs 2 respond 2 complaint. That didn’t mean we had 24 HRs 2 investigate. Some places try 2 get whole thing done in 24 HRs. It’s tough on the weekend/break. If there is no response, schools are liable. #NVedchat

A3 Summer school can be a great way to get ahead. We need to advertise it in a positive light. @SNWPEducators is an awesome way to spend a summer. My own children loved attending, and@I loved teaching it😊 #nvedchat
  • tikaee May 14 @ 10:42 PM EDT
I completely agree. Rebranding is important. We call RTI, WIN (What I Need). Our students love going to the WIN😊 #nvedchat
