Welcome to tonight’s #MEMSPAchat “Leadership - ONE Block at a Time”
Please check in and introduce yourself. Remember, we will use the Q1/A1 format.
Here is a little “sprinkle” for the evening...
A1) To me, Leadership is the opportunity to serve others...thru the good times and not so good times...the opportunity to guide, celebrate, and cheer...
#MEMSPAchat
A2: CULTURE — this drives everything. It sets expectations, moves an organization forward, and creates a standard by which we function (relationships, work quality, engagement, etc.).
#MEMSPAchat
A2: My leadership focus in one word is "strengths". Because, when we feel strong and positive, we can do ANYTHING. When we feel weak and defeated, everything seems impossible. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Support is the one to describe my personal leadership focus. My goal is for my words, efforts and actions to reflect the fact that I want to support students, staff and families. This is hard work.
We all need support! #MEMSPAchat
A2: SHARED It's not about me, it's we. There's so much knowledge and power in OUR collective efforts to improve learning for our kids. I'm blessed to work with an amazing #epcrocks
team #MEMSPAchat
A2: “Better” Always looking at what we do and how can we do it better. Everything should be up for discussion including our own leadership practices. #MEMSPAchat

"Partnerships" - when we form partnerships with another person/organization, both end up richer than before. Relationships among human beings are the most powerful motivator. A2 #memspachat
A2: My Leadership Vision: In my best moments, a humble desire to see others succeed. In my weak moments, a selfish drive to see my efforts be applauded. Leadership requires #humility. #OneWord@JonGordon11#MEMSPAchat
A3: Agree...we need to create a culture/climate where our students & staff see who they can be at their BEST-selves. We must paint a picture of (individual)SUCCESS & possibility. We can’t do this if we desire to command/control our team or students.
@SirKenRobinson#MEMSPAchat
A3: agreed. Command and control lead to compliance. A climate of possibility lead to commitment. Commitment to learning, growth, the vision, etc. #MEMSPAchat

Agreed!!! Leading out of fear or command is not going to get the results we desire for our students, respect and mutual understanding is always the way!! #MEMSPAchat
A3: I agree - Culture eats everything else for breakfast! Leadership is about building a context where ALL members of the school community can thrive. It's about shattering the ceiling for everyone. #MEMSPAchat
A3) Agree! Ben and Roz Zander explore this by reminding us that we are the conductors of the symphony, yet we are the only musicians that do not make music...we are responsible for the tempo, the rhythm, and the crescendo...as leaders we set the tone. :) #MEMSPAchat#details
Very much agree! It is a necessity for true leaders to be about empowering others for not only the success of their current team, but also so these same teammates can GROW and GO lead another team. #MEMSPAchat

A4: “A good leader creates belief—in the leader’s philosophy, in the organization, in the mission.”
This is about culture and passion in the work and in the people(S and Ss)! Every moment, every interaction, every conversation, & every decision.
#MEMSPAchat
A3 Agree 100%. Trying to control others get you nowhere, and as we know, when others are empowered to set their own goals they often exceed them. That moves an organization forward. #MEMSPAchat
A4) "We lead from where we stand" @rosamundstonezander@BenjaminZander I believe that no matter the title, the age, the experience, we lead from where we stand, in front of the classroom, in front of the school, from the office, in the grocery store, at a ball game...#MEMSPAchat
A3: Agree! Creating a culture and climate of taking risks and removing limits to learning begins with leaders! We have to give teachers and students the permission to take risks and get out of the way! #MEMSPAchat
So pleased to announce that @Syndee_Sue is joining @MEMSPA team as Associate Director of Professional Learning & Principal Leadership -Mentoring & Coaching. #MEMSPAchat
A5: We have to intentionally find strengths/passions of our Ts, create frames/opportunities for them to lead, encourage when they do, and provide support/feedback for growth. Shift the ownership and praise to their work and leadership!
#MEMSPAchat
Coaching is coaching, no matter if it’s a HS football team or our teachers and support staff. This book boldly and honestly tells the true story of a coach’s heart for his team. I aim to lead with my authentic self like Coach Erhmann #MEMSPAchat
A5 Just. Ask. Questions. Give people the opportunity to reflect and grow and often times they’ll come up with the best solutions to the problems are trying to solve. #MEMSPAchat

A5) Service. Ss, staff, and parents notice when you take a service approach that results in positive results. Positivity is contagious and empowering. #MEMSPAchat
A5) Planning ahead, calendar in May for next year, events on chart paper in lounge for next year, ask each person to volunteer for 3 events, as lead, support, set up or clean up #wealltakethelead#weallpitchin#MEMSPAchat
An organization can’t be about the person with the most prominent leadership title. If it becomes to centric that way, the structures that leader creates will crumble if/when they move on. #MEMSPAchat
A5-ok PLN, Go... as a newbie, I will be stalking your answers, searching for ways I can foster leadership within our building. I never want to be a sage on the stage! #MEMSPAchat

A5: Spread the love: involve and empower teacher, paraprofessional, counselor, student, and custodial LEADERS to join in the decision making, planning, and implementing processes of the building. #MEMSPAchat

A6: COMMUNICATION (listening & speaking/writing) is always a focus & learning space. With the hectic nature of our jobs, families, & lives, not having communication as a focus could be detrimental to being & giving your best-self...it’ll hold your building back.
#MEMSPAchat
A6 An area of Leadership I struggle with is not giving up on those who aren't interested in being a part of a team. We all have needy moments but some are needy all the time. #MEMSPAchat
A6 - Biggest challenge as of late is the amount of growth experiences by the school, it creates overlaps in all areas. Organization and time management are key to keeping order and grinding through the times! #MEMSPAchat
A6: Just one?! I most desperately need to develop more long term planning. I tend to know what our teams needs NOW but great leaders can FORESEE what their team will need. Luckily, in the meantime, I can learn from @dougammeraal who is exceptional at this! #MEMSPAchat
A6) Elevating others using the methods that work for each individual. I believe this is something that I will always need to work on as a leader. #MEMSPAchat
A7 I have read so many but the book that help to guide my common sense leadership is "What Great Principals do Differently" by Todd Whitaker #MEMSPAchat
A7: Still want to get my hands on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey. However, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to read “The Path to Serendipity” by @AllysonApsey - CHECK OUT #MEMSPAchat NEXT WEEK
A7) . I am a reader, so I have read many...I am looking forward to reading @DanielPink new book:
When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing #MEMSPAchat
A7: I love the focus & authenticity for high quality leadership! These are building blocks of culture, relationships, and impact! @KouzesPosner
1) Model the Way
2) Inspire a Shared Vision
3) Challenge the Process
4) Enable Others to Act
5) Encourage the Heart
#MEMSPAchat
A7: I doubt he intended it to be about leadership, but no book has open my eyes to the need for #authenticleadership more than @donaldmiller ‘s “Scary Close.” It hit me square between the eyes, and dared me to lead with vulnerability and honesty! #MEMSPAchat
A8 - Plan the work, work the plan. Find a network of support, engage the parents/community and be willing to communicate and most importantly listen 👂! #MEMSPAchat
A8: BE AUTHENTIC! Authentic in your strengths and weaknesses. Authentic in your success and failures. Authentic in your leading and following. Authentic in your heart and your head. Authentic in your passion and vision.
#MEMSPAchat

Shared with me and @CyndiNickel 20+ years ago by @galileoleaders Has stuck with me, 15 minutes a day will grow you by leaps and bounds, not to mention bookshelves Right? @ForestPrincipal#MEMSPAchat
A8 Being a School Principal is an honorable profession. You will work harder than you ever thought possible but will have the opportunity to change the lives of the students you serve! #MEMSPAchat
