The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Good Morning #bfc530 Waking up as a proud coach this morning as my Middle School boys baseball team won the Group 3 Morris County Championship yesterday
My high school doesn't do the pledge. If we did, I would expect silence out of respect for those who participated. Kneeling, standing, or fist up.
When i was in high school, I stood but didnt have hand over heart nor did I recite.
#BFC530
I have two elementary school kids, and my personal view is that they shouldn’t be forced to swear unconditional support to a nation that doesn’t unconditionally support its own residents. I’d prefer they make an empathy or kindness pledge. #bfc530
How do you address standing for the Pledge of Allegiance in your classroom?
(or whatever your students have to stand & recite? or do they?)

I used to be the early morning programmer at my school and the cook and I were let in by custodial assistants at 6 am. So, I have always been up early. Love the group at #bfc530

Thanks V! Great group of boys who lived the idea of team first throughout the season, no prima donnas, no arrogance, just teammates who wanted the best for each other #bfc530
We do the pledge in our middle school, but it’s voluntary. I do recite it but never recute “under God” since it implies religious belief in a public school and it was a McCarthy era add on. If kids ask, I talk about that. #bfc530

I believe it's a law in Massachusetts that you have to do the pledge each day (please don'ts me to cit e specifics).
We do it via loudspeaker, usually the senior class president.

Thanks, but I would pass on the Mets job. Being paid for being perpetually frustrated isnt appealing to me, plus I would be yelling at the Wilpons to get a better medical team & Alderson to finally develop a top notch farm system all the time LOL #bfc530
In our building, I stand in the main intersection & welcome our students. When the morning announcements come on, students stop in the hallway for the Pledge of Allegiance & national anthem. They don’t have to recite it but they should respect the moment. #BFC530
We do the Pledge of Allegiance, school pledge, and moment of silence, so students stand for all 3 and participate in what they choose. I haven't had a fight yet about standing. #bfc530
I have students who do not stand or pledge to anything for religious reasons. I respect that & it is usually a teachable moment at the beginning of the year. #bfc530
Maybe there were some kids that just stood but didn't say it. One student who didn't stand for a few weeks. Middle school students are figuring out who they are and what they believe in. When it comes to allegiance, I'm fine with them deciding for themselves. #bfc530

#bfc530 I required all students to stand for the pledge. They didn’t have to say it but they had to be respectful and at least stand. Being in Florida there are Ss from various countries. Some students were not U. S. Citizens but I required them to stand.
There was only one girl in my class who was upset. Our teacher set time aside for a debate about it. I think a discussion may have been a better way to go! #bfc530
Canadian national anthem in my school right after the 9am bell.
Only Ss that don't stand for it are Jehovah's Witnesses. I get a few others wondering why they have to stand then. Once I explain why he's exempt they're usually understanding. #bfc530

My 8 yr old son and I are reading Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus right now and I’m reading The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer. #bfc530
MGL Title XII, Chapter 71, Section 69 (1/2): Each teacher at the commencement of the first class of each day in all grades in all public schools shall lead the class in a group recitation of the ''Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag"
#bfc530
As long as my kids are quiet during the pledge, they can participate in whatever way they feel. We talk about why having respect for the flag is important because that is what gives you the right to participate in your own way. #bfc530

Pt. 2 If any student chooses not to stand and pledge, I respect their choice. I really don’t think that as educators we should try to force them to do so. Shouldn’t freedom of speech include the right to NOT speak? #bfc530
Standing for the pledge in my room was just something we did...never had a student pushback.
If a student wanted to remain sitting I would’ve allowed them to as long as they weren’t disruptive.
Most important I’d have asked WHY they wished to sit! Dialogue is critical!

MGL Title XII, Ch 71, Sect 69 (2/2):
Failure for a period of 2 consecutive weeks by a teacher to salute the flag and recite said pledge as aforesaid, or to cause the pupils under his charge so to do, shall be punished for every such period by a fine of not more than $5.

Good morning, David! It has been good—playing catch up on stuff I couldn’t get done in the last two weeks. Heading to #ST4T for the next couple of days and then #EdCampMagic on Saturday. Don’t people think educators have summers off? How’s your week? #bfc530
My personal view is that kids shouldn’t be forced to swear unconditional support to a nation that doesn’t always support its own residents. I’d prefer they make an empathy or kindness pledge, spend that time focusing on how to be decent human beings. #bfc530

We didn’t have prayer in our school growing up, but I often think about those things - songs and celebrations- that excluded the kids who were not being raised in Christian homes. I’m so glad we have progressed- at least at that front. #bfc530

Honestly, they didn't know why, just knew they knelt... so I was just there to inform them about the message. I also said it is something they can choose to do or not.. #bfc530
We do stand for the pledge, but every year an S lags or doesn’t stand for some reason and when other Ss jump on them, I take the moment to explain their rights, then they understand it’s a personal choice and can be an avenue for voicing civil rights. #bfc530
I haven't had a summer off in 25 years! Such a misconception from the general public. Good week. Gearing up for awards assemblies next week, then conferences & some vacay time! #bfc530
I'm from B.C,. Canada and we had the Lord's prayer too. I didn't really know the words and only realized years later that I was saying it wrong all that time #bfc530
As I got older, I began to appreciate having the moment of silence to remember to say my own (quick) silent prayer for friends and students in need each day. #bfc530
School-wide summer reading title announced today at annual faculty ice cream social.
It's been a loooonnnggg process this year, full of twists and turns.
#bfc530
99.9% of my students have stood. Of the very few who havent, they were always respectful to the activity while seated. I always thought the pledge was a good reminder that despite our differences, there are things that can always bring us together #bfc530
We do the pledge every morning. The s are expected to be quiet and respectful during it. I have had a s years back who did not want to stand and I've told them that's their right, but they need to respect the rights of others. We make the issue about respect for OTHERS. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530 crew!
I’ve had students/families choose not to say the pledge, but they’ve always stood through it. Open dialogue with Ss and families is the best way to ensure everyone can feel their views are respected.

We often have a 7th grader racing through an approximation of the words over the PA. Like Evelyn Wood’s Speed Reading Dynamics...(anyone remember that ad?) #bfc530
While it is required that the pledge be recited every morning, I also know that the Supreme Court ruled in 1943 that it violates first and fourteenth amendments to force students to say the pledge. I respect my kids to make a choice for themselves. #bfc530
They did that in NJ for a few days in the 80's when I was in school & it was declared unconstitutional b/c it implied state prayer. I would disagree w/a public school leading in prayer but sometimes, as in this NJ Sup Ct decision, we go too far the opposite way too #bfc530

Have a great Wednesday everyone. Our 8th graders heading to Wash DC today so the hallways will be a whole lot quieter for the rest of the week. Im out! #bfc530
Missing my #bfc530 crew. Insomnia is rearing its ugly head at me again. Yesterday went to the gym at 5 and today I was able to fall back asleep for a little. Hope you all are well
On this topic, if you haven't read “Nothing But the Truth" by Avi, you should. It is a quick read and shows the education system at its finest. #bfc530
Missed you Kathy, but it definitely feels like a winding down of the club lately so popping in and out works. Hope we both sleep tonight! Until then, rock on sister. #bfc530

This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.

Sure! Every day we read for the first 15 minutes of our class period. Everyone reads what they want. Each Wednesday, we drag our chairs into a circle and each talk about what we are reading and recommend the books to others. #6thgraderocks#bfc530
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness.
Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
James 3: 9-10
I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people.
In no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers and idolaters, since you would then have to go out of the world.
But now I am writing to you not

Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.

I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself.
My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.

My ELs come from all over the world. I tell them at the beginning of the year that they have to be respectful the same way I would be if in their countries. All Ss stand up, some say pledge and others don’t but all respectful. #BFC530
Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

#bfc530 We stand and say the pledge at our school every day with the announcements. Most students stand and say the pledge, but it is always their choice.
We recite at flag salutes on Fridays. At the beginning of the year we talk about respecting all values and how respected and valued ideas, when woven together, are more binding than any pledge. #bfc530

We do it everyday at the beginning of first hour. By the end of the year, Ss lose vision. I’m very patriotic and try to not take it personally when Ss sit. I appreciate all of your comments today!!! #bfc530
I long term subbed last semester and let it be voluntary. I had a diverse classroom. The Ss who remained seating I think was more out of laziness #bfc530
Currently reading Mindset for Learning, will be starting Bold Schools and Cuturize in the next couple of days. 3 book clubs at once, and teaching summer school. Ah the life of a teacher. LOVE IT! #bfc530
