Something I'm excited about for this year... hitting more National Parks? (If the damn shutdown ever ends!)

A1) I am actually going to be leading a book study on Run Like a Pirate by @mradamwelcome starting next week. Then I've got a whole list of others. #worldgeochat
Hello, #WorldGeoChat! Adrian from California β I teach photography, cinema and broadcast at the high school level! Iβm looking forward to my first @ToughMudder! πͺπ»
A1. Eduprotocols and a whole slew of history discipline related books. I'm trying to improve my content-based material with new discoveries and approaches to history. #WorldGeoChat
A1: iβm actually reading as many βbooks I feel like everyone is supposed to readβ but I never have. #catch22 done and working on #fahrenheit451#WorldGeoChat
Thank you Ed. One of my edu-related goals for 2019 is to be more intentional in reflecting and sharing. Appreciate you taking time to check it out. #worldgeochat
A1
After meeting @mrmatera at #NCSS2018, I'm rereading Explore Like a Pirate! I need to gamify parts of my classroom. Started off with something simple today - a bonus points game that has NO impact on their grade!
https://t.co/uZWDd2EMsC#worldgeochat
A1 I'm currently reading The Best Lesson Series: Writing: 15 Master Teachers Share What Works (Volume 2) by @TalksWTeachers and just ordered @sarahjcooper01 Creating Citizens #worldgeochat
A1 I am reading a number of books right now (and on my to read books) mainly about social justice issues including Rising Out of Hatred by Eli Saslow as well as Hitler in Los Angeles by Steven J. Ross #worldgeochat
That's awesome! Especially because we as a single teacher can't completely overhaul our system to be like Finland. I'd love to see what strategies they offer in the book #worldgeochat
Chris, it was over a framework I use with my classes to examine material culture & integrate it into the historical narrative: https://t.co/tomhfSpuVP#worldgeochat
some things are simple like taking breaks to allow our brains to "breathe" & ways to get to know your Ss ... even how you can allow for Ss to have more buy-in to the content #worldgeochat
Excited to finally be online in time to chat with you all! This year, Iβm really excited for the chance to maybe visit Harry Potter world!!! Fingers crossed! #worldgeochat
Hey #WorldGeoChat crew. Will have to skip the chat tonight but will check out what was shared tomorrow so I can keep my learning going. Youβre all awesome!
A2: CURRENT EVENTS! I've decided that students must complete 3-4 NewsELA article summaries and connect it to our curriculum for this term and the next. My students NEED to get into watching/reading/listening to the news #worldgeochat
A2) I use my Winter Break to actually take a break. I try not to reflect too heavily. I rest up and then talk to the kids first day back and we discuss the previous semester and make adjustments. #worldgeochat
A2
Things to try in 2019:
More gamification (see answer to Q1)
Better (and more frequent) assessments
Separating school Chris from home Chris (December nearly got the best of me - I stopped any sort of balance and it was bad)
#worldgeochat
A2. Adding more of the #eduprotocols in my weekly rotation, more podcasts (both for student listening and student-created), and to do an entire PBL government unit. #worldgeochat
A2 - I'm looking forward to implementing more Visible Thinking strategies in my class -- trying Circle of Viewpoints in a couple of weeks. #worldgeochat
A2 if I was in the classroom I would be implementing @SmithsonianLab in all sorts of ways (I have created 3 collections already and working on some geography ones as well)! #worldgeochat
I used to do a Current Events Friday. I am having a hard time doing it this year. But we do talk about a lot of current events for a few minutes every day. #worldgeochat
That's awesome that you include them in the conversation. What went well, what can we continue to explore together, etc. This is great, James #worldgeochat
I would love to get students podcasting. Scrolling through last night's #sschat gave me lots of ideas as well as so many new podcasts to check out! #worldgeochat
I think that is important. I see myself more as a facilitator if student learning. I want them to take ownership of their learning. So they tell me what worked and what we change. #worldgeochat
A2 After attending @CHitch94 and @STLinOK 's presentation on podcasting, hoping to try it with my students this semester. #sschat yesterday also inspiration. #worldgeochat
Balance is my #oneword resolution this year. Allowing myself to separate school Sam and home Sam because, you're right, it can nearly destroy you. Looking to create a canvas to remind myself everyday. #worldgeochat
I would love to do an Amazing Race this year! I created it and had it all ready last spring but didnβt get the courage up to implement! #worldgeochat
A2 I ran Brown University Choices program once last year. If you have not engaged in one, itβs definitely worth checking out. Excellent debate structure that is supported by top-notch resources and students LOVEβ€οΈ it! #WorldGeoChat
A1 Reading Teaching for Black Lives, Rethinking Multicultural Studies, & looking forward to Rethinking Ethnic Studies coming out soon! All from @RethinkSchools#worldgeochat
One of so many incredible @newsela features! I'm using this article from them on Friday with my students "Human rights: Questions and answers" https://t.co/7uDxBcRB1I#worldgeochat
In reply to
@ParkersGeocats, @SamMandeville, @Newsela, @Newsela
After doing a couple of breakout boxes, I switched to digital. It's a bit easier for curating the challenges & not worrying about the locks! #SorryNotSorry#worldgeochat
Gahhh I wish I could do every Friday. We have drop periods and I feel like I wouldn't be able to think straight if I did current events every Friday. I'd be all over the place #worldgeochat
A2 Looking forward to a renewed & deeper focus on teaching ethnic & indigenous studies to pre-service teachers. Also looking forward to the Ethnic Studies & First Nations in Oregon thru a Geography Lens Institute I'm facilitating (w/ the help of the experts) in June #worldgeochat
A1 Better come back to this question. I have started the Frederick Douglass bio by David Blight. Also Lost at School by Ross W. Greene. On tap, losts of poetry. Looking for recommendations. #worldgeochat
A2. Finally got around to Earth Engine over the break. Hoping Ss can create and analyze more using raster data this upcoming year and next. Almost 60 years of temp/precip. data. https://t.co/I8VvxAbmlC#worldgeochat
That's the name of the book (Teaching for Black Lives), but I fervently agree with you about the need to focus on disenfranchised and a greater focus on females (my middle school daughter laments about that in social studies!) #worldgeochat
I just finished a reconciliation course through EdX and the University of British Columbia...not American specific but a lot of learning. Has a mix of Australian, Canadian and American content and treatment of First peoples in each of these regions #worldgeochat
A3: my goals for 2019 are ...
1 - Don't sweat the small stuff!
2 - Use the atlas everyday in class.
3 - Write down at least one thing that made me smile during my classes each day.
#worldgeochat
A3 #worldgeochat
1-help my students interpret primary sources
2-challenge students to do more presentations to teach their peers
3-include EVEN MORE engaging lessons
A1: I'm not an educator, but I'm focusing on learning Mandarin. It'll become increasingly important within the next decade, and it'll help me gain some insight into my ancestry. #WorldGeoChat
A3: My 3 Resolutions for this year
1. Use authentic audiences
2. Have students create a podcast
3. Create multiple pathways for my students to work through that fits them #worldgeochat
A3
1. Write more (for me - I liked how I felt when the #worldgeochat blog was flowing)
2. Empower students - which I've always tried, but make it better
3. Care about the things that matter - which doesn't always include the data - but does include learning & SEL
A3
1: get a couple #HDub music videos out there featuring the kids
2: get accepted to present at #NCSS2019
3: seems lame but meet the rest of my coworkers past face or name because I am woefully behind #WorldGeoChat
A3
1. Try to get students to connect with or be engaged with each lesson
2. Include more cross curricular work
3. Get students creating as much as possible and taking action
#worldgeochat
1. Connect Ss to people in the real world. 2. Ss become the owners of their learning. 3. Focus on reviewing to help deepen their learning. #worldgeochat
It's so much fun! I did one around my campus, & the Ss loved it. We kinda forgot to let the security guards know, so that was interesting (explaining Ss speed walking/jogging around the school).
#worldgeochat
A3 (1) Motivate pre-service teacher to teach towards more diversity & giving voice to voiceless in geo ed (2) Getting more diversity in our org (3) continuing to work on being willing to make myself uncomfortable in order to dismantle white privilege #worldgeochat
Well done #worldgeochat!!!
In 30 minutes I feel way better about 2019!
We're still at 9 Eastern/8Central next week, but we move up 30 minutes on JAnuary 22!
Develop that #explorersmindset , pushing my students and myself #further . I also want to prioritize building empathy and helping my students feel connected to the global community. #worldgeochat
Thanks for the #worldgeochat!! Now, I have to go find something else to do to avoid the propaganda & lies being spewed by @realDonaldTrump right now. I assume he's still speaking?
Thanks for joining the first #worldgeochat of 2019. It was a GREAT one guys -- once again, my reading list is longer and my teacher mind is turning. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a WONDERFUL week!
Thank you all for joining us tonight for #worldgeochat. Join us next week when we talk about assessments, which looks like it was a goal for a good number of folks. Night!
#worldgeochat if you are looking to have students work through their passions and curiosities Learning Centred Innovation by Katie Martin may be the read for you. A lot of your top 3 made me think of the intro.
