Welcome to . Our topic is creating a culture of care in the classroom. We will be using the Q1:A1 format. https://t.co/ihGaldQuAM
-
-
Q0: Introduce yourself and share a pic of someone or something you care about.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Q1: How do you show your students that you genuinely care about them?
-
love the tongue stickin' out 😜
-
-
A1: I ask my Ss how they are doing and listen to their answers with my full attention.
-
A1: You can show students you genuinely care about them by getting to know them and have high expectations for them.
-
Who doesn't love sticking out their tongues!!!
-
A1:I greet them outside the classroom 2 see how their day is going. I also ask them about their weekends
-
A1:Before you can teach the Ss MUST know you care. I treat the Ss like they are my own kids. They are not just data
-
-
A1: You show Ss you care about them by listening to them, talking to them, asking questions, getting to know them and pushing them
-
A1: show them by asking about their day, sharing experiences and stories and treating them as much like my owns kids as I can
-
A1: I ask about how their weekend was and how their day is going. And I always ask follow up questions
-
A1- I show them through my actions- I listen to them, I talk to them w/ genuine interest & I give them my all
-
a1: continue --- I ask them their opinion
-
Q1b: What can you start doing tomorrow to show more students you care?
-
The best is when you ask them a follow up about something they did like 3 weeks ago and their face is the best
-
A1:
Getting to know them helps, and letting Ss know you can (appropriately) challenge them to grow is good.
-
-
A1b: Meet students at the door. Truly see them. Shake their hand, fist bumps, high fives. Set the tone that you care.
-
A1b: Shake their hands everyday.
-
-
A1b: get into more classrooms and interact with Ss
-
A1b: talk from the other side of the room so I can interact with more students who hide in the back.
-
A1B:Just like I would greet with like a High five or fist pump and welcome them to class. Even just smiling at them
-
A1b- smile at them, laugh and cry with them, be mindful of my words, make eye contact and sing off key
-
A1: taking time, listening, be at the door, ask about them
-
A1b: You can start tomorrow by getting to work a little earlier than normal and make sure your lesson is dialed in.
-
A1b: Find a Ss that I did not give enough time too yesterday
-
-
I agree, smiling goes a long way

-
Hey Kathy- here checking in late from Upland. I teach 9th graders (biology)
-
-
Make it triple espresso and then just chat away with them
-
Seeing Ss is always good. Remind yourself why you're doing what you do.
-
A1b: talk to my shy students more. Let them know that I do see them and appreciate them
-
Awesome to have you here as always Kathy.
-
A1b: well today was not a great day so I might have to say why or I am sorry, or I screwed up actually
-
A little late to the party, sorry, I was finishing my version of Ss work in IM3

-
Q2: What is a method or activity you use to get to know your students?
-
It's so weird that a simple gesture makes everyone feel better, but I am all about it
-
-
Being prepared is so important and often why thing go wrong https://t.co/Ntv5toP2uY
-
-
A1b: You can start tomorrow by getting to work a little earlier than normal and make sure your lesson is dialed in.
-
A2: My students would journal who they are and what they do.Be interested in who they are. Each student is unique and interesting.
-
a2 I start year w/index card 3 Qs favorite sports team, name, and if you were an ice cream flavor...use it and shake hands at door
-
-
A2: On Mon. asked how their weekend went, get to know their extra-curriculars and ask about it, asked which books they are reading
-
A2:Weekend sharing on Mondays and Rock n Roll Fridays (listen to music while doing bell ringer). We share and create experiences
-
A2: I spend the 1st wk getting 2 know Ss, giving time for Ss 2 get 2 know me & develop a classroom management system that fits all
-
A2: I have them create a "Me" poster where they draw images to represent hobbies, favorites, and future endeavors
-
A2: I used a "get to know you" sheet with various general Q's. It sounds boring but my Ss liked it. I learned alot about them.
-
A2-1st day of school my Ss sculpt something that represents who they are & write name in neon marker on the black desk.
-
I do the same thing and it's huge to learn about the individual that they are. As well as them getting to know me
-
A2: I correct and go over their essays one on one at my desk. Allows me to make personal contact.
-
A2: I also go to the sports games, science fairs and such
-
Many of my fellow T's do the same, they see the difference it makes in the classroom for them
-
that sounds like a lot of fun
-
A2- I talk to my students and ask lots of questions. I try to be open and honest with them so that they are comfortable sharing
-
A2: I share about my life. Gives them the okay that is to share about theirs.
-
Q2b: How do your students get to know you?
-
A2 b- then they upload those pics to a class slide deck.
-
A2:
I often went with 2 truths and a lie, low risk way of bringing out unique bits from Ss. I would participate too.
-
A2b: I let students know how I grew up and what it was like when I was younger. And I share what it took to do what I do now.
-
A2: They still get a kick out of me slides, one pagers or journals, which I comment on, hang up (ask them about if personal)
-
A2b: I share pics of myself, my family and things I am interested in and relate some of my personal experiences to the learning
-
A2b: my room is decked out in my hobbies and at the beginning of the year I show them pictures from my life and of my pets
-
A2B:I share my luv of food and music and Monday weekend updates. It's easier to connect food to biology, so at least I have that
-
A2b- I share with them my life- past and present, I talk to my kids like they are my kids because they are all my kids -
-
A2 c- I shake their hand every day when they arrive at my door. I welcome then and quickly evaluate how they are doing.
-
A2b: I stand in front of the class and give them "20 things you didn't know about Mr. Synnott".
-
A2b: I don't ask them to do anything I don't do; I join the fun. Love "2 truths and a lie" I talk about my kids a lot too
-
Oh gosh, food and biology- that could be dangerous LOL
-
What's some go to strategies for you?
-
-
Love this, works best when you have built those relationships
-
I also did research with Lipids so It's over the top
-
A2b:
Ss always welcome to ask.
I liked having conversations off point from class - usually during passing period.
-
Q3: What role should administration play in creating a culture of care at their school site?
-
Fundamental to building trust and relationships
-
Making science relatable to real life- excellent! That will stick w/a S long after you are out of their life!
-
A3: Admin need to not be so caught up with the function of their job that they neglect the human part of learning and teaching.
-
a3 the admin set up the culture for the school, it's often their vision that is reflected on campus
-
Very well said, it's hard not to forget with all the things we have to do, but so important
-
My Ss sometimes asked
"Why do you have so many math books?"
I enjoyed showing my geek with them.
-
I wish I could like this 100 times.
-
A3- admin needs to show they truly care about all their people- staff, Ss, families, community- through positive actions
-
A3: Most of what is said is non-verbal, Admin must show a culture of care to Ts & Ss. It sets a tone & shows them leading by ex.
-
A3:Principal is high energy and a high fiving machine. He talks to the kids and asks them about classes. They love him
-
I routinely talk about my school related interests (clubs, PD etc) I let them see that I am a learner too.
-
A3: I think admin should hide the walkie talkie when possible and greet students as they enter school.
-
Nice addition, I was wondering more to your quick evaluation as they go through
-
A3: Admin should show Ss that they care about who they are. Know the Ss names and greet them when walking around the school
-
A3:
Participate.
Have presence on campus and join in the activity whenever possible.
does this well. Big fan.
-
We also change collaborative duties and seats so they get to know more of one another.
-
A3: Admin should have conversations with Ss and Ts that show they are interested and care about them
-
A3: it is so easy. Say hi. Hand written Birthday cards for staff. Learn spouse's names. Be visible. Teach don't just admin
-
Super sweet! Love the details
-
A3: My Principal sings, I think that is brave and cool
-
Q3b: How can we involve students more when creating a culture of care with each other in our classrooms?
-
I completely agree with this, by showing their human side they can connect to the Ss and Ts and make it a better place
-
A3b: Ask them. Take their feedback. Let them tell us.
https://t.co/28s1O2Xjfv
-
-
Q3b: How can we involve students more when creating a culture of care with each other in our classrooms?
-
I explain to them why I do it-show respect, practice professional behavior, figure out how they are doing that day-
-
So true, I love this idea. Need to be more vigilant with day to day
-
A3-it's my goal when I become an admin 2make sure I'm a mentor & coach at all times- that I am kind and helpful to all I contact
-
A3B: Having a place for them to voice their opinion or dissatisfaction as well as praise is a start.
-
I ASK how they are doing- I greet each person individually-in several languages. look in the eye-expect a response
-
If I may ask, what drives you to become an admin?
-
A3b- we need to find out what the Ss think they need/want from their school & really listen to those thoughts
-
That is awesome! It shows the Ss it is a safe environment where they can be themselves.
-
A3b: I know it is basic but I use "we" instead of you. I have the kids do the same. Also, mix up groups. Get them to interact
-
Absolutely! I greet, say hi, but I should spend more time individually greeting them. Makes a big difference
-
A3: same as first Q-Listen!
-
A3:
Ask for T report card.
We say listen to Ss. Give opportunity to speak.
1st heard this from https://t.co/E15gQHtuKj
-
A3b: Involve Ss by asking them and actually using their input
-
Any final thoughts on building a culture of care in the classroom for ?
-
FT on : Lighten up. A tense classroom is not a learning classroom. It is not about you. You got your education. It's about them.
-
A3b: allowing them to see that their voice and opinion is important. And letting them know that we see them as fellow people
-
This takes time every day - but !
-
I want 2 help more Ts 2 stay/become motivated,2 encourage creativity, & 2 show Ss that we are the village they deserve
-
Absolutely, it's about going slow to go fast. I love that
-
FT:
Just saying you care isn't enough.
Make it the norm that humanity is a regular part of your classroom.
-
FT: Take the time to show that you are a kind and compassionate person and build Ss experiences with positive connections
-
ahh, that's powerful, how might that look for you?
-
FT: Be open and transparent. Try new ways to keep building up that culture
