Join the Collaborative Professional Development movement! Every month, Jennifer Williams and Participate invite you to share how you are incorporating blended learning tools and ideas derived from other educators into your instruction and professional development. This chat is great if you are new to Twitter, or a seasoned social media maven. Ultimately, it’s about empowerment and self-discovery through the expansion of personal learning networks, and the ability to blend in voices, concepts and tools from all over the world.
Welcome to #CollaborativePD! Please introduce yourself and tag in three educators or organizations you feel are Project-Based Learning (PBL) rockstars!
#CollaborativePD perfect timing 😊 picking up Salva Dut today for 2 weeks of student centered PBL in four schools. Ready to share and hear some other great ideas. - Steve, Beijing, https://t.co/OiYuyShASj
A1-PBL is about self-discovery and creating new knowledge. PD should follow the same. PD should stretch our thinking while allowing us to grow. #CollaborativePD
A1-PBL also allows for opportunities of discovery. Following our own path. PD should be the same. Less top down and more finding our way in our learning. #CollaborativePD
A1 #CollaborativePD if you use the BIE model, there’s a lot of best practice teaching in there. For me, pd on embedded formative assessment was a game changer
Yes!!! We're challenging our students to try new things and navitagate topics that are new to them--why can't educators do the same with their professional learning?! #CollaborativePD
A1 Exploration, discovery, comprehension, creation and sharing are all great ingredients for professional development. They are also what every great creator and innovator has done since forever. Great skills for teachers and students (and admin, too). #collaborativepd
A1 I think that giving educators an opportunity to explore something on their own, take some risks with learning and finding out what our interests are, when we experience this, more likely to create time for our Ss to do so as well #collaborativePD
A1: Great question. I would have to say that pretty high on this list would be the opportunity for collaboration. It saves time, makes the work easier, and improves the quality of curriculum as the teachers work together to problem solve. #collaborativePD
A1 PBL allows a lot of room for growth as new learnings are tried out in real-life contextual situations. I think PD should go along the same lines, where a lot of collaboration and growth (even through mistakes) would take place. #CollaborativePD
Yes, and that's one of the reasons I think it could be a powerful tool for PD. All the voices in the room matter not just admin or the person at the front of the room. #CollaborativePD
GREAT point, Rachelle! Learning is iterative! If we truly want to grow we have to keep working at it and adapt along the way. Thanks for sharing, friend! #CollaborativePD
Running through #IAH on my way home to Mexico City but happy to spend my layover and boarding time with the good folks of #CollaborativePD Hope I don’t miss my plane!
I am all over the place. I work with any age that will have me. I don’t do as much PBL because most everything I do has a maker philosophy. #collaborativePD@JenWilliamsEdu@markjotter

.Exactly. Often there is the same mentality in PD as their in the classroom. The “sage on the stage.” The room is the smarter than the individual. #CollaborativePD
A2) Having a positive culture where every voice is heard and valued. Also making sure that the PD is best practice and will have a direct impact on student's learning #collaborativepd
A2 The biggest factor will always be time. Time to explore, time to discover, time to comprehend, time create understanding into a shareable form that is meaningful. Great work is slow, incremental, & often looks terrible at first. Ideas become powerful over time #collaborativepd
A2: PBL for PD for me needs to have:
☑️ guiding question based on action
☑️ intentional focus on the community doing and impacted by the work
☑️ sustained levels of inquiry
#collaborativepd
A1– #PBL connects learning to real life scenarios, not just mundane facts in books. Just like our Ss,Ts need to to make learning important, fun, and a good use of their time . PD just for the sake of meeting is useless.make connections, improve teamwork, CREATE. #CollaborativePD
A2 #CollaborativePD
I think the main component is in supporting educators in letting go. As I’ve been traveling and supporting schools, it important for those of us w PBL experience to coteach and support those through the transition
A2: Helping teachers connect to real-world recipients and evaluators for students and the projects. You can't make it authentic for students if you don't include others! #collaborativepd
This is exactly why “fly by night” presenters can’t work. You can’t fly in for a day. Do a keynote or a session or two and expect anything to change. Long-term, embedded, meaningful PD drives change. #CollaborativePD

Q2 Staff Buy-in! It needs to be presented as a way to ENHANCE what students are ALREADY learning, not just another thing to implement.
#CollaborativePD
People need to be better tool evaluators. In PBL, you need to have the options for people to figure what tool is best for a task. Projects have small variables that can lead to new paths #collaborativePD
I hear this often--teachers are very resistant to "one more thing"--and, for good reason! Less = more in my mind with deeper levels of understanding and engagement! #CollaborativePD
That's an important point about great work being incremental. Everyone learns at a different pace, including teachers, so why not shake up PD and add some personalization. #CollaborativePD
A3 How to teach writing more meaningfully. How to incorporate more choice. How to provide more recess. How to foster effective mentor ships w/ staff & students. How to help teachers who are struggling. How to support all learners with the whole school. #collaborativepd
A3 Last year in my classes we learned about the #teachsdgs and students focused on making connections with their community and global perspectives, so much to learn and as PD, collectively we could learn so much #collaborativePD
A3 Currently working on a PBL activity with my Ss for our local Indy Zoo! Creating an animal enrichment activity for an animal at the zoo. #realworldproblem#CollaborativePD
And, my heart is full! :) Love this so much! #CollaborativePD#literacy I would LOVE to see this explored further. Blog post? Curated collection of resources? Future chat? #CollaborativePD
A3) this seems like a brilliant place to tie in @TeachSDGs. Have your staff choose a goal that speaks to their heart and come up with ripple effect projects to share with the staff, students, families, and community! #bethechange#CollaborativePD

A3 recently started a gardening club where students build sustainable vegetable gardens to yield produce year round and donate to local food pantries. Solving the problem of little to no fresh vegetable donations to food pantries. #CollaborativePD
Q4: PBL is all about authentic, contextualized learning. How might teachers incorporate PBL to connect their own learning directly to the classroom and to students? #CollaborativePD#lastQboohoo
AND what a way to get to know one another! Oftentimes schools unintentionally become cliques, without even thinking about it by staying with your own grade/subject area. This allows you to see and get to know others that share the same passions as you! #CollaborativePD
A3 Teacher resistance (to new things, specially on top of their daily grind) could be a common denominator across continents. We must have the effort to make teachers realize that these "new" things should be integrated into what they do. #collaborativepd

Right? My inspiration comes from the good folks of @chascollegiate who do this work every day. They were recently highlighted in the book by @dintersmith What School Could Be. Perhaps we could do a future chat... #CollaborativePD

A3 Teachers should be asked to solve a problem that is in their school community. Ex. How can we as a school community use mindfulness to optimize time during our school day? #collaborativepd
Yes! Trevor you are speaking my language. Ideas are bigger than a school year, and for them to be truly authentic and meaningful, rethinking is necessary! #collaborativepd
Yes. And usually great work develops over years, not quarters, semesters or trimesters. Believe we have to get away from the school year mentality. Meaningful ideas are usually bigger than a school year.
A3: Many Ts won't touch PBL out of the fear that they won't have the time and consistency to follow through the whole project. Therefore, discussing practical ways of balancing instruction within a time frame is a crucial challenge that needs to be addressed.#CollaborativePD
This is awesome! Imagining Ss searching for the needs of their peers, their Ts... What a way to build community! A group of our HS Ss just proposed teaching Spanish to our new expat Ts. #collaborativePD
Q4First, it is perfectly OKAY to not know everything! I love learning along side my Ss. Example: Drones and programming to help local farmers. We will be starting this in the spring and I am stoked, AND know nothing about drones. #readytolearn#CollaborativePD
A3: How many times has technology been glitchey? Our ability to #persevere is the best modeling. I’m going to say it again...”Learn, Adapt & Adjust” #CollaborativePD
This is where the magic is at.
A small group of believers that know they make a difference. All change starts small.our Ss need to see this in action too! They expect massive, immediate change, but never get a chance to be part of something big that starts small. #collaborativePD
Amazing idea, I've been seeing a lot more students facilitating PD creating a community of learners. What if the students modeled PBL for the teachers? #CollaborativePD
