Hi all. I'm Josh, a 7th Grade Reading teacher at @SalisburySchool. One thing my PLN doesn't know about me is that I love to cook and would love to be a chef if I wasn't a teacher. #rethink_learning

A1: Equity is fair. Equality is even. Equity views each student’s story through empathy. Equality is the same for all, regardless of the student’s story. ⚖️❤️ #rethink_learning

A1- Equity is giving every student what they need to succeed. Equality is treating everyone the same...which some view as fair...but is that really fair???? #rethink_learning
A1: To me, equality is making sure everyone gets to the same predetermined destination. Equity is giving everyone equal access and letting them follow their own paths with support and guidance from teachers. #rethink_learning
A1: #equality is treating everyone the same regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, etc - #equity is providing the necessary tools and resources for Ss to be successful. #rethink_learning
A1 equity is everyone gets what they need, personal to Ss/Ts, and equality is everyone gets the same thing, which may not be what they need #rethink_learning
A1 💕 this topic of equity and just spent the weekend driving deep into it w/ my @Bie PBL peeps! Equity in educ can be providing students the access, treatment, materials to decrease the opportunity gap. #rethink_learning
A1: Equality means treating each S the same regardless of social identity &/or ability - #equity is providing the necessary supports, tools & resources that Ss need in order to be successful & enjoy wellbeing #rethink_learning
I'm new to twitter. I am a professional development specialist and a current school board member, a former high school teacher. I'm just getting started learning about #pln and #rethink_learning I am very concerned with #equity. People in my life would be surprised I tweet.
A2: All stakeholders (both inside & outside classroom walls) need to be able to admit & challenge our own biases, fears, & perceptions so that we can develop a growth mindset rooted in empathy! This takes BRAVE & HONEST questioning! #rethink_learning
A2 There needs to be an open discussion where people feel safe to share backgrounds, exper, maybe their own Qs, how can we teach about these topics, how to teach in a culturally responsive way, #rethink_learning
A1- How can I best support you? What are your unique needs? What materials, modifications and accommodations must I make to include you equitably? What types of access must I provide? #rethink_learning
A2 it may depend on the situation but we need to match the questions to what’s happening in the community and match to the needs of our Ss. #rethink_learning
A2: I think we need to ask why it is still so challenging to integrate and embed these issues into education; I am hoping my book can contribute to the conversation - we need to start by examining our own biases and assumptions #rethink_learning
This graphic (for whatever reason) just sparked something for me... the “platinum rule.” Treat others the way THEY want to be treated!! #rethink_learning
A2 In lessons in the classroom, being open about the diff topics discussed in education, let Ss know they can come to us for support, we create a safe envt for communicating #rethink_learning
How do we make sure we are understanding the needs of all of our students, not just the ones that can identify, articulate and share them? #rethink_learning
Yes @JoshEcker This is a great questions about shifting mindsets. We tend to come to school with perceived ideas and beliefts. We need to bring up these questions and spend time discussing them in the classroom #rethink_learning
A2: I’m uncomfortable with the idea of “right questions” - our questions should be critical, diverse, & divergent & be aimed at finding ways of supporting marginalized Ss in ways that uphold their dignity & reflect a value for their humanness #rethink_learning
A2- As far as diversity ,and being a culturally responsive class, we celebrate each others differences. We don't ask as though we don't see them. This comes from our morning meetings and a "Unity in the class community" mindset. #rethink_learning
good point, Phiona. I think the 'right/relevant questions' will be based on the critical discussions we have and ensuring all Ss feel safe, supported, and included. #rethink_learning
A3: I’m not sure that we ARE! But we recognize it as an area of necessary growth - it’s item 1 on our long range strategic plan! I’m proud of that! Self-assessment is a place to start! #rethink_learning

Well said, Josh. And how can adults shift from a deficit mindset to a growth mindset when it comes to our most marginalized student populations. #rethink_learning
A2: Is diversity and inclusion a series of questions or a mindset that we as teachers need to constantly reexamine in ourselves to ensure that ALL students are a part of amazing learning and growth in our classrooms? #rethink_learning
For anyone who missed it: Q3. How are you, your school or your district providing equitable access to the highest quality educational experiences? #rethink_learning
A3: I try to provide students the tools and provide them the space to voice what they need to succeed. No matter how much I learn about them, they know themselves best. #rethink_learning
A3: proud to coteach traditionally exclusionary courses like physics w the amazing @AndeleeEspinosa to provide access to all sciences for all learners #rethink_learning
A3: This week a small group of us are talking to admins about ways to bring more equitable learning experiences to our highest risk students in a way that provides more opportunities for growth rather than more remediation and repetition. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 #rethink_learning
Yes @SueThotz the question is about equitable access to quality educational experiences. The problem with the word "access" is that we tend to think "technology" It is about #equity for all #rethink_learning
A3b- There also must be flexibility with grading. Too frequently we get wrapped up in this ideal of due dates. Yes, kids need to budget their time, but for many students learning to do great work is more valuable. #rethink_learning
A3: Equitable access to educational experiences means taking the time to understand how each Ss learns best and to provide opportunities for them to have voice and choice in learning. #rethink_learning Ss build agency.
A3: by encouraging Ss to participate in designing their own learning experiences, exploring their own curiosities/wonderings, engaging in culturally responsive, critical inquiries in ways that are relevant, authentic & meaningful & reflect high expectations #rethink_learning
For anyone who missed it: Q3. How are you, your school or your district providing equitable access to the highest quality educational experiences? #rethink_learning
A3b: On a personal level, last year I convinced 20 of my standard level students to attempt an AP class before they graduate. They take the test in two weeks. My hope is that they’re success rate for college grows with them. #rethink_learning
I sometimes have trouble explaining that to folks who equate the access to the technology to equity. "Giving devices to all solves our inequity" sounds good when you have to justify your spending. Back to the real things that encourage #equity. #rethink_learning
agreed! It's about access to all the tools and resources needed and sometimes we don't need 1:1 - Ss should have opportunities to collaborate on the same device. #rethink_learning
Thank you for joining us today in #rethink_learning with a quick chat with 3 questions on #equity. What a wonderful PLN we have. Join us in 2 weeks to discuss #Globaled
A3: Providing access to supports and tools for quality education requires us to #rethink_learning and how we structure opportunities not only during school hours but also outside the school.

Thank you, dear Barbara! It's always a pleasure to jump into your world, even if it is for a few minutes. Thanks for building community and helping us to #rethink_learning
Yes @Shapiro_WTHS Teachers are taught to be in control so it is tough to change but-- when you do and Ss take ownership for their learning, it's awesome. Right? #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning A little late to the party, but A2: Everyone with a hand in helping a student must have all relevant info re: student. If you don't know or you aren't sure, ASK.

Hello everyone! Very late here but I really like the topic on equity! I’m Angelo from the Philippines, teaching JHS students. I’m an avid NBA fan and novice sportswriter too! #rethink_learning
Hi @angelobmallari the chat is over but please go in and review and reply to any of the questions. There are 3 questions that we shared on #equity in #rethink_learning We started at 7am (Philippines time) for 30 minutes.

A1: Equality is giving the same to all people while equity is giving what the other person(s) really need. To put a value to equity, I would like to use the term Justice. We can give the same to everybody (equality) but not necessarily giving justice (equity). #rethink_learning
