topic: How does your school/district culture encourage risk taking with staff and students? - https://t.co/X4fXDAiNHP
Awwww. Hope the kiddo feels better soon. https://t.co/e2CSPzKOHN
Good morning! Oona from NJ home with a sick kiddo today. Thanks to Google apps, I'll still be able to work w/ Ss, though.

By knowing that every individual is valued and supported. A strong community is key.
District encourages it by allowing teachers to lead, that in itself is risk taking for some. For our students the use of PBL helps.
That's crucial to encouraging risk taking. https://t.co/Wor5KTAiQ0

I think that "risk" is defined quite differently depending on school culture. For some risk may come in small increments!
School and district encourage risk taking by giving teacher discretion to choose what to do in class.
I suppose then, that teacher led PD is a risk for some districts. It's a chance, but other top-down PD mightn't work
I feel that by modeling risk-taking we can set examples for Ss and Ts where they know it's ok to take risks and fail and learn.
It kind of makes me sad that teacher creativity is considered a risk. What does that say about education?
Teacher choice is fabulous. I'm hearing of unions negotiating teacher led pd into contracts. https://t.co/LR49evEGMf

Sad ehh?
It says that educators aren't "the professional"
Great thought and question. I have been thinking the same.
Sad for me too. Says that standardization and safety are valued. Moving backward okay. Just not forward. https://t.co/mjcXhlRVNA

Good point Jay
Districts need to take risks themselves. Be able to see beyond "the way we've done things" https://t.co/2AMV0MCCtk

Right now, I am moving from more traditional instruction into reading and writing workshop. It's risky but necessary.
Analogy of the day - Beauty:Eye doing beholding::Risk:Heart/brain taking plunge
Exactly. It encourages risks because I the district would like to see more teacher led PD, but not many Ts jump to it.
Can't like this one enough! https://t.co/7s9BgYJrQL

That is happening in places.
Places that are not trying to crush unions.
That trust educators.
Some schools and districts might need a transplant! (with your analogy lol) https://t.co/9vpvYZCJZK

You will reap the rewards - both you and your students will grow from this https://t.co/BQmrkNUDDh

In the case of the students the district encourages the Ts provide opportunities for risk taking for Ss. Locus of control.
Ultimately this is desirable.
In practice, many obstacles.
Still, we try.

This can also create a weird dynamic among Ts, has to be implemented carefully
And why might Ts not want to lead PD? It's risky to put yourself out there w/ colleagues, to lead beside them.
Good Morning Erica from MT up early enough for my own timezone today :)
Have either you had experience with this? The weird dynamic, reluctant T, etc
If a staff member doesn't quite deliver and fails, is it acceptable and how does admin/colleagues respond?
Congrats! I may or may not make it to my own https://t.co/zjwdWTiyHt
Good Morning Erica from MT up early enough for my own timezone today :)
' district encourages T led PD, though only small %age lead. Ts prefer to do and be done leading is risk too
It can -- because teachers are tough customers! We want the best instruction for ourselves, same as Ss!
Super risky. A culture needs to be in place that we are learning together. "I" am showing what I know, what do you know?
We have, and it makes it hard to get other Ts to present and for the audience to keep an open mind (1/2)
We have to avoid this!
We must try things and keep our practice fresh. The Ss know when we've go tired https://t.co/DvI0kLbBuy
We’ve moved this year to more small group discussions with mixed department to move on from that dynamic (2/2)
You are my role model for upscaling the English classroom.
Learn from the best.
I agree. The culture must be supportive in order for this to take place. Trust is imperative within a staff.
Ts should have discretion in their classes and in their own PD as well
The only way for an initiative to grow is to be cultivated by Ts. Be invitational & patient
Need to invest in it too. Give teachers time and resources to implement. https://t.co/AP0yqfbb4y

All it takes is a few to get the party started.
I'm in similar boat, experiencing growth & accompanying pains. Acknowledge both as commitment to long game. https://t.co/FgdISkR5q0

Hi Erica. What's it like out there this morning.
I'm leading a PD tomorrow, and I'm going to open w/ turn and talks, community building.
Have a Terrific Tuesday everyone!
