Hello #IEedchat
Joseph Williams from @puhsd
I want the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to know that we are here for you. We know each and every one of you is dealing with this in your own way. Find your strength and peace.
A0: Hello, Tom Ashley here, Tech Coach TOSA @PalomaValley in the @puhsd. To the Stoneman Douglas students & parents: I am so sorry for your loss & I promise to DO MORE than send "thoughts & prayers." Your activism & courage inspires me. Congrats on the new FL laws. #IEedchat
Robert Guzman
Tech Coach from @CMIPerris in @puhsd
I would tell them to stay strong and stay optimistic many people are behind them and there to support them in their need #IEedchat
A0: Deatra Lee, Tech TOSA @puhsd, I am sorry you experienced this tragedy, thank you for taking the lead in making a change, you have my support. #IEedchat#neveragainMSD
A0: Jonathan Synnott from @puhsd. To the victims and their families from MSD High School, we are here for you and I am praying for you. Your courage and voice is inspiring #IEedchat#neveragainMSD
A0: Chris Lara 8th grade history. I would tell them thank you for refusing to accept thoughts and prayers and moments of silence as forms of actions and demanding our representatives to do what the people need and not what the NRA wants #IEedchat

A1:When it happened, it took a few hours for the severity of the incident to become apparent. When I got home from work I watched it on TV & cried. By the next day, I was just angry. But out of the devastation came this amazing call for action by the Ss & Ps. Hope! #IEedchat
A1: I was in shock and then felt helpless and just sad. Then I was angry that this keeps happening over and over again with nothing being done to stop it by those that lead our country. Tired of excuses. #IEedchat
A1: my first response was “another one?” And then sadly I got ready to see what excuses the gun community and representatives would have and what inactions would be taken. #IEedchat
A1: I was actually out of the country and I heard of the incident a couple of days after it occurred. My only thought was when are we going to help these kids that are calling out for help. We need to have more empathy #IEedchat
HAPPENING NOW: @ieedchat moderating an important discussion on school safety, planned student/teacher walkouts, and the #NeverAgain movement. Follow along at #IEedchat!
A1: I was shocked and then not shocked - sadly resigned to “another” school shooting in what has become a usual day/week/month/year in the U.S. As always, it made me reconsider the balance between my husband’s and my role as Ts and parents. #IEedchat
A1:
My initial reaction was denial/disbelief. Not for long. Soon after was calloused sadness and concern for local students adn their emotional states. There are still after effects and I see fright in students as aftershocks arise.
#IEedchat#NeverAgain
Q2: Did you discuss this school shooting with your students? How did that go? Was there anything that surprised you about your students reaction following the shooting? E.g. hopelessness, apathy, activism, etc. #IEedchat
A1: The February Parkland Florida shooting filled me with grief. These families experienced so much trauma and in years to come the trauma will affect them in untold ways.
#IEedchat
A1: Incensed and exasperated. Our schools should be sanctuaries for learning. Instead, heinous acts like these have become normalized in our country. #IEedchat
Q2: Did you discuss this school shooting with your students? How did that go? Was there anything that surprised you about your students reaction following the shooting? E.g. hopelessness, apathy, activism, etc. #IEedchat
A2: I discussed it w/several Ss. They were all aware of it - some were a bit shaken, but generally I was surprised by their acceptance of mass shootings as part of their "normal" reality - they didn't really grasp how abnormal this is in the rest of the world. #IEedchat
I think I understand what you mean about the balance between being a T & a parent. I would protect my Ss but at the end of the day I want go home to my own children. #IEedchat
Q2: Did you discuss this school shooting with your students? How did that go? Was there anything that surprised you about your students reaction following the shooting? E.g. hopelessness, apathy, activism, etc. #IEedchat
A2: many of my students asked me about it and we talked about what happened as well as what we would do in the classroom if it were to happen here. We also talked about the gun laws and how horrid they are #IEedchat
A3: I do not think arming teachers with guns with solve the problem. We need stricter gun regulations, more resources on campus for mental health, time to build positive relationships w/ our students. Great suggestions at #ArmMeWith#IEedchat
A2:
I did not breach it significantly. I brought up with Ss around me that the school has supports if they need.
Talking w fam it seemed like the weird nightmare was spinning more and more - reacting to terror w muscle instead of compassion for the victims. #IEedchat#NeverAgain
Q2: Did you discuss this school shooting with your students? How did that go? Was there anything that surprised you about your students reaction following the shooting? E.g. hopelessness, apathy, activism, etc. #IEedchat
A2: On the shootings, students asked me about the unbalanced news reports and the dangerous social media posts. I discussed with students the laziness of thought and anti-Intellectualism of adults and cautioned them to not be like these adults.
#IEedchat
That’s why the Stoneman Douglas students are so inspiring. just when many of us were giving up hope to stop these incidents they actually are getting results! #ieedchat
A3:This is a HORRIBLE idea. HORRIBLE. More guns is the NRA answer to everything, and the NRA can kiss my a**. BTW, the teachers that would want to carry guns at my school are exactly the ones I WOULDN'T want armed. Common sense but serious gun control will save lives. #IEedchat
A3:The proposal to arm teachers with guns is ludicrous, Schools should be safe havens from violence and should stay that way. Guns do not belong in a school, specially not on a teacher. #IEedchat
Q4: This Wed, a nationwide school walkout is planned for 10:00. Organizers suggest that students, teachers, & admin walk out of their classrooms/offices for 17 minutes (one minute for each MSD victim). Are you going to participate? Why or why not? #IEedchat#MarchForOurLives
A3: more school counselors, smaller student to SC ratio. Having guns in schools is a horrible idea. Students need to know school is a safe place not a prison. #IEedchat
A3: more guns in school is not the answer. I refuse to be armed. What we need are more trained professionals on campus to help these students who have issues. We don’t fight drug problems on campus by giving each teacher a dime bag so why is that the answer for guns #IEedchat
A3: I’m against it as I think the background checks & training required to arm teachers should be universal. What has moved me most is seeing the cost of insurance for districts where teachers are armed & knowing that districts would pay that by cutting other programs. #IEedchat
A4: Teachers need to be positive about this. I've already heard many throw out their jaded views about Ss just wanting to get out of class. "It's not gonna do any good." This experience could be the 1st spark of civic engagement in our Ss lives. I'm supporting the Ss. #IEedchat
I would be concerned about this. All the circumstances where this show of force would be inappropriate, what do you do then? S tries to grab it from you, then what? What about as a normal citizen on the drive home? #IEedchat
A4: I will support all students who wish to walk out, but being a district employee, I was informed by admin and our union that we are not allowed to participate in any protest while we are "on the clock" #IEedchat
A3:
No. No Reason. School is never a place for weapons. That is the intent of this suggestion.
Increase empathy and connection in schools and community. IMO empathy lowers violence every time.
#IEedchat#NeverAgain#IEedchat
A4:My actions are voting in elections, I will not partake in the walkout. Should we do more absolutely, but not by walking out on time to learn. Rather discuss how to make your school better during that time and discuss what you need to take care of each other #IEedchat
Q5: Admin & teachers: What advice would you give to students that want to participate? What advice would you give to teachers that want to walk out? #IEedchat
A1: Sadly I wasn’t surprised/shocked. It’s scary to know how we’ve become almost numb to these tragedies. But then that changed to anger now Im beyond proud of the students who have become activists. It’s beautiful to see they are leading a movement. #marchforourlives#IEedchat
A3: To use a term, people need to keep their powder dry. Dont get caught up in the hysteria. Educators need to focus on the children and not an arms race.
#ieedchat
A4: as I will be “on the clock,” I am not allowed to participate and I am not allowed to voice any opinion. As someone who has become more socially active in the last year, this hurts as I want to discuss social activism and effective civil disobedience with all ... #IEedchat
A4:
Educators always have to walk the line of compassion & supporting the whole S while maintaining professional policy. If I disagree w such apolicy then I need to do what's necessary to change it.
Walking while on the job is not how I should protest. #IEedchat#NeverAgain
A4: been told that as teachers we can’t participate but I will in know way stop any student that wishes to walk out in an effort to have their voice heard. I will use my voice on Election Day. I am glad my district is giving students the safe space to participate. #IEedchat
A5: Ss need to be safe & non-destructive. I'd tell Ss its OK to have fun but have PURPOSE. Advice to non-tenured Ts: KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN & stay in your classroom. If all your Ss leave, stay with them to keep them safe. Tenured, Ts? Your call, follow your conscience. #IEedchat
Ss if you wish to express your views by walking out on March 14, I respect your actions. But make sure you are peaceful and have an agenda as to why you are walking out. If this means that much, then please do so. #IEedchat
Q5: Admin & teachers: What advice would you give to students that want to participate? What advice would you give to teachers that want to walk out? #IEedchat
A2: I’m an elementary school counselor, we were on break that week. Didn’t discuss it when we got back, except with a 3rd grader who was crying- she just moved from FL. I had to reassure her that we would do everything possible to keep her safe. #IEedchat
A5: Same thing I tell my daughter, be informed, understand why you are doing it, and your voice matters. Ts should get the advice of their union reps. #IEedchat
Q5: Admin & teachers: What advice would you give to students that want to participate? What advice would you give to teachers that want to walk out? #IEedchat
Q6: Should students who walkout be punished by admin? Should teachers be allowed to punish/discourage these students by rescheduling a test, quiz, or high-point assignment during the walkout? #IEedchat
A4: I will observe the 17 minutes, that is the very least I can do; according to my Ss there will be a lot of absences that day--fear and confusion--not enough awareness---maybe in my class those 17 mins will involve a conversation #Ieedchat#neveragain
A5:
Be organized, be clear with purpose, be transparent.
Make sure people know what you are doing and why.
Also, communicate to the mass that simply walking out w/o purpose or conviction is an insult and disrespect to those who own it.
#IEedchat#NeverAgain
Q5: Admin & teachers: What advice would you give to students that want to participate? What advice would you give to teachers that want to walk out? #IEedchat
A5: my only advice is please keep it peaceful. There is a time and a place for everything and use this platform to use your peaceful voice. Advice for teachers is don’t hinder the students #IEedchat
A6: we ask our students to be thinkers, to be good citizens, to care about our world & each other but then we want to punish them for taking a stance on this? Ridiculous. I encouraged my own child to walk out if he chooses to. #IEedchat
A6: This should be a peaceful walkout. Punishing Ss by scheduling a punitive assignment is not promoting an environment of peace or understanding. Agree with @DeatraLee_Edu, teachers need to consult with their union #IEedchat
A6: Ss should understand that they may have to pay a price for their involvement in an act of civil disobedience. The protest at my school appears to be to go to the quad for 17 min & then back to class. Admin & Ts should make that punishment no more severe than normal. #IEedchat
A6: I don’t think so, but it’s important to consult local district and school policies. That said, if there is a punishment, it should not be based on a student expressing his/her political views. #IEedchat
A6: This sums up my answer.
If you're planning to take part in the national school walkout, read this - CNNhttps://apple.news/AOxqIZKWGQmGJ6JsGJ7toqg
#IEedchat
A6:Admin should let Ss go unpunished if they r civil & peaceful. No T should punish students and specially not by giving a test or quiz. Remember the 60's and 70's then respect their views and show empathy, they will remember that they were allowed to express themselves #IEedchat
A6: sadly I have a feeling teachers will use this as a time to punish students for not sharing in their own beliefs. This is not only wrong but disgusting. Students should not be punished for expressing that they no longer want to be shot in school #IEedchat
A6: I do not think Ss should be punished for walking out, but if they are, then it would be worth it. As a parent, if my daughter, were in high school & wanted to participate I would support her. #IEedchat
Q6: Should students who walkout be punished by admin? Should teachers be allowed to punish/discourage these students by rescheduling a test, quiz, or high-point assignment during the walkout? #IEedchat
A6:
Actions like this come with costs. Me personally hold it against students for walking out, no.
I disagree with punishment for purposeful, peaceful action in this case, though to say one can fight policy without resistance is silly.
#IEedchat#NeverAgain
Final thoughts on #ieedchat for the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School:
“Everyone wants to tell you what to do and what’s good for you. They don’t want you to find your own answers, they want you to believe theirs.”
– Socrates
FT: The MSDHS Ss and Ps have given me hope that we can make meaningful change that saves lives. That hope is a gift. Thank you! #NeverAgainMSD#IEedchat
A5: do it! You have to be the change you want to see in the 🌎 Your thoughts/feelings/opinions matter! Your Voice is powerful, your actions are too- Take this opportunity to take a stance. #marchforourlives#IEedchat#neveragain
I feel that we spend all of their education celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. as a hero of civil disobedience every February, yet, when students want to apply his lessons to their own lives and current issues, we block them. What hypocrites does that make us? #IEedchat
Thanks for joining #IEedchat. See you next week at 7:30pm when we discuss another interesting issue. If you are going to #CUE18 we hope you learn a lot and have a great time.
