Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 7th grade US History II and am the founder of #waledchat which meets Thursdays at 9pm. Favorite movie is DEFINITELY Star Wars! #makeitreal
Hi all! Bill from PA. Elementary principal who was so excited to connect with @tamaraletter today via GHO to discuss innovation lab! Outstanding stuff! Favorite movie is What About Bob? #MakeItReal
A1: We are always aiming for the next best thing that we can do for our students, maintaining insanely high expectations for ourselves in the process. Good is "never enough" ( see what I did there?!) - we need to be great! #makeitreal
A1: We have to "always be selling" If we do not believe in the lesson that we are teaching, the message we are giving, how can we ever expect the students to buy-in? Upsell EVERYTHING, then dream bigger. #MakeItReal
It was a joy to connect with you and Dennis, Bill! I can’t wait to see how your Innovation Lab turns out! I took a room video after our GHO so I’ll add it to our Google Doc! #makeitreal

A1: We often have to design elaborate productions to get the masses to come and buy what we are selling, both students and stakeholders of public education. Now if we can just create a soundtrack equally as great for our lessons! #MakeItReal
A1: Haven't see the movie but I"m going to go with, you need to make personal connections with your "audience." If they buy into you and believe in you they will be wanting to come back every day to see what will happen next. #makeitreal
A1: I think we as teachers are like the Greatest Showman, as we are trying to bring out the best part in our students, which at times may be what they are unsure about! It's up to us to make them shine! #makeitreal
A1: We have to be engaging to our audience and not everyone will be on the same page as we are and sometimes we need to accept that and do what is best for our Ss and our team. #MakeItReal
A1: You set the stage. Your Ss enter the ring at any point with acts and showcase what skills they have. They use what you taught them and talent's they have. Even if they fizzle we all have sizzle. #makeitreal
Ts perform every day, sometimes as many as seven or eight times a day at the secondary level. It’s hard to be “on” that much, it takes practice and preparation #MakeItReal
I love this concept! I'm stealing that and preaching the message of upselling our content and lessons. Would you like an extension activity with that? Would you like a global connection with that? #MakeItReal
A1: Haven't see the movie but I"m going to go with, you need to make personal connections with your "audience." If they buy into you and believe in you they will be wanting to come back every day to see what will happen next. #makeitreal
A1: Well, often my classes seem like a circus when we have constant interruptions & activities. I am also juggling a lot of job titles and duties. We have to handle the stars, freaks, animals, customers... ha. Turns out, there's a lot of "The Greatest Showman" in EDU. #MakeItReal
A2: Let them follow what they are passionate about. Let them "perform" in ways that express their talents while connecting with the "theme" of the class. Push them beyond what they think they are capable of and shoot for a standing ovation.. #makeitreal
It's fun, but very tiring. Always trying to find the bright side of the situation that we are currently in. Getting the kids to find their purpose in their current placement. #MakeItReal
A2: Make sure they truly understand how amazing they are & how proud of them we are every single day. I spent my first few years feeling like saying those words would mean nothing to my students-now I know the true power. Invest in the future by living in the present. #makeitreal
A2: Put the bats in their hands! Empower them to take control of their own learning & support along the way! Give them a chance to lead & shine!! Encourage & let them know you believe they can do it! #MakeItReal
A2: Personal connections are so important. Foster what they are passionate about, that's why I love Genius Hour! You are able to see such amazing things from your Ss! #makeitreal
A2: Haven't seen "The Greatest Showman" yet, but we need to give Ss voice and choice wherever and whenever possible, then trust them to accomplish the task or go beyond our wildest dreams as they take the reins. #MakeItReal
2) Give them a voice! Ss have a voice, and it’s part of our job to help them find it. Encourage Ss to embrace their passions & interests, and help them grow! #MakeItReal
A2: Didn't see the movie but going with creating a learning environment where they have voice and choice. Focus on learning & feedback w/ Ss not grades. But everything starts w/ them knowing you care. #MakeItReal
A2: Embrace unique attributes! Measure growth within each student, not by comparing students to one another. Create experiences based on their own strengths/interests #MakeItReal
A2: The concept of embracing and celebrating our differences and strengths is a message that all students need to hear and believe. Help them embrace their uniqueness and use it to make the world a better place. #MakeItReal
A2: Allow Ss to shine and present in a way that they feel safe and comfortable. Not everyone want's to use a tech tool. Have them act, use, art, sing, dance or rap. Some tech favorites for this include @Flipgrid@GoogleForEdu, Today's Meet and @Screencastify. #MakeItReal
A2: Find the "sparkle" in the Ss life, and call it out for everyone to see! Had a conversation w/a soccer player today. Told her how proud I was of her for her efforts in goal. Some Ss have become so accustomed to hearing only the bad that they forget they have good. #makeitreal
A2 What empowered the cast of Barnum’s circus was that they were allowed to be INDIVIDUALS we need to value, respect, and incorporate our students individuality in our lessons and classrooms #MakeItReal#champforkids
A3: Regroup by talking to my tribe, the people who can bring me back to where it all began and help me realize that I am doing exactly what I should be doing. I also like to step away completely and just be with my family. Puts everything in perspective very quickly #makeitreal
You got it!! Exactly!! (BTW I didn't think this would be a movie for me, and it's awesome. Just don't tell @teachingDHodge I admitted it. She'll make me watch it 7 more times) #MakeItReal
A2.2: EVERYONE needs to know the value that they add to any production. Had a long talk with one of our 8th Grade ensemble Ss today in Lab abt how, specifically, she is making a difference and leaving a legacy. Both of us left feeling great. Love these conversations! #makeitreal
A3: I take a break & just spend some time connecting with my Ss! We chat, laugh, and dance! That time together helps me refocus on my purpose & get back at it! #MakeItReal
3) When I forget my why, it’s usually because I’m listening to the Negative Nancy down the hall. My Ss are rockstars at keeping me motivated. They are silly & fun & love to ask questions and keep learning. Those sweet little souls are my why. #MakeItReal
A3: Wall down the hall and smile at 10 people. Doesn’t take much to reconnect with others to remember your why. It’s all about strengthening relationships! #makeitreal
A3: I reconnect w/ family, Ss, and then my tribe, both in person and the Twitter/Voxer tribe. I let Ss give me REAL feedback. I listen. I then try to adjust and reflect. #MakeItReal
A3: As Principal I go and sit in classrooms with students, at cafeteria tables, participate in gym classes, throw batting practice or serve waffles in my pajamas. Do whatever it takes for every student...every day. #culturize#makeitreal
Costs nothing, but means everything. I always tell kids, "You have the rest of your life to hear about how you have let people down, disappointed them, or hurt them. For the next three year years you will hear how proud I am of you!" #makeitreal
A2: Make sure they truly understand how amazing they are & how proud of them we are every single day. I spent my first few years feeling like saying those words would mean nothing to my students-now I know the true power. Invest in the future by living in the present. #makeitreal
A3: 3 kids at home, with 2 of them soon to be venturing out into the world as "adults", helps me focus on the why and the importance of their learning being relevant and applicable to LIFE. My job is to help teachers use instructional technology to make that happen. #MakeItReal
A3: Walk down the hall and smile at 10 people. Doesn’t take much to reconnect with others to remember your why. It’s all about strengthening relationships! #makeitreal
A1: We perform each day and need to keep our audience engaged and entertained. We need to surround ourselves with people who are captivating and help us put on the greatest show of all time! #MakeItReal#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3: As Principal I go and sit in classrooms with students, at cafeteria tables, participate in gym classes, throw batting practice or serve waffles in my pajamas. Do whatever it takes for every student...every day. #culturize#makeitreal
A3: I had a “warm fuzzies” binder on my desk as a 2nd grade teacher. Special notes/pictures from Ss & parents I could go to and remember my why are hard days. I have one with my #highered Ss, too! Love to hear how my why helps them achieve their why #futureteachers#MakeItReal
A3: Coming back to my PLN on Twitter always inspires me! Moments with my Ss enjoying themselves and laughing always does the trick too! #MakeItRealhttps://t.co/2KP2nZU6vd
A3: Great question. A lot of times I think of the students and their home situations and the lack of positive make role-models. I then tell myself "These kids need me" I was put here for this reason. #MakeItReal
A3: I lose track of my why when I am involved or pulled in many directions. I regain focus and my why by looking at what I wanted to accomplish originally. A walk or a mindless read also helps as well. #MakeItReal
A2: we empower our Ss by showing them that we care. We show them that we believe in them. We support them so they can become the stars we know they are. #MakeItReal#LoveLiteracyLearning
Thank you all for joining and @MathDenisNJ for allowing me to lead the circus tonight! It was an honor to be "at your service" for #MakeItReal tonight.
A3: Being here tonite. Pushing beyond lack of sleep + the flood of texts that have rolled in. Life making demands, but I need to refuel for tomorrow. @Simmonsknights1 needs me. Thank you for the encouragement to press through, @megan_hacholski and @sdtitmas. #makeitreal
A3: I stay focused by seeing the faces of the Ss I work with. I aim to be the teacher I would want for my own children. I listen to my Ss and build relationships and connections so that I never forget the “why” #MakeItReal#LoveLiteracyLearning
I like to remind myself (for my own sanity) to TRY to interject a positive comment or silver lining when others tread into the negativity realm. My goal is to focus on the positive :) #MakeItReal
It's the truth. Trying to get kids to slow down and bask in the glow of victory is so difficult sometimes. I don't want them to miss the beauty that I get to see each day. Regret is a wicked master. #makeitreal
Thank you all for joining and @MathDenisNJ for allowing me to lead the circus tonight! It was an honor to be "at your service" for #MakeItReal tonight.
Was thinking about this today on the way to my car after school. Always bums me out when kids blow it off. Makes me fight harder to take them to the higher ground and see things from my perspective. #makeitreal
You are much too kind, Tamara. I just learn from the best, and give every person that I get to reach what I always hoped for as a kid (and still do as an adult). #makeitreal
My goal is to meet students where they are at by talking to them and REALLY listening to them. It is a simple way to build their confidence and to identify specific supports that they need. #MakeItReal
I think we're up to 4 times now.. 1 in the theatre and 3 at home haha. I must give credit to Dana (my fiance) for inspiring the idea by making me watch the movie haha #makeitreal
A3: I made a promise to myself that my why would always be the Ss. In some cases, I am their only advocate. In my plans, I reserve a section for 'Why?'. This is where I bullet point my reasons for lesson activity choices. #MakeItReal
Okay.. I admit.. this movie was not my first choice to see, BUT I really enjoyed it. There are so many paralells to teaching, empowerment, etc. Really a great movie! #makeitreal
