#RuralEdChat is a chat that focuses on the needs of the rural educator. This chat has been revised by Tammy Neil (@MathNeil), John Martin (@edventures) and Natalee Stotz (@nataleestotz).
Remember as we chat tonight, add #RuralEdChat to your tweet so we can all share your brilliance. We will use the Q1/A1 format until a conversation gets started.
A1: right now, it's thinking too far ahead. I find my mind getting a little too far into next Tuesday's class, and too far out from today's! #RuralEdChat
A1: This year has been hard for me. My husband was fighting cancer and passed away in December the week before Christmas. On one hand school is a good distraction, on other it's hard to focus on school a times. #RuralEdChat
A1: I can lose focus when drama erupts either in my classroom or hallway. My focus may not be the sharpest when I'm dealing with personal issues as well. #RuralEdChat
Yes! Every noise in the hallway or neighboring classroom. The 1st &2nd grade class is in the room below mine and we hear them through the floor all the time, or other classes in our hall way. #SmallSchool#RuralEdChat
I know we should keep personal issues out of the classroom, but sometimes it's just super overwhelming. I'm still human. Sometimes my hurt shows through my tough exterior. #RuralEdChat
I think the kids need to see that side of us at times. They need to see how we handle things and know that it's okay to be hurt, distracted, etc. and that we can still keep going even through tough times. #RuralEdChat
Our wellbeing is how we view life. Our purpose wellbeing is how we view our job. When any part of our wellbeing is off, not thriving, it impacts our daily performance. #RuralEdChat
A2: I have learned strategies, and I know to take one thing at a time and sometimes good enough has to be good enough. May not completely stop, but the feeling is there. #RuralEdChat
If it weren't for my faith, I would have a lot harder time dealing with things, that is for sure! Helps me to take things as they come and do what I need to do. #RuralEdChat
A3: Last summer I started practicing mindfulness. It has helped me be more aware of my emotions and circumstances and keep my self from being controlled by my emotions. #RuralEdChat
Q3: Since I feel most overwhelmed when things pile up, I mostly combat it with two steps: making a pile of things that are successes and positives, and then a list of actual steps I can take to combat any part of the the "bad" pile. #ruraledchat
Q3: It’s important to stop and examine why we feel overwhelmed. Examine the 5 areas of wellbeing: physical, social, community, financial, purpose. #RuralEdChat
A3: I also find keeping a to do list and updated calendar really helps me to stay on top of things and keep from feeling overwhelmed. Also journaling. And taking time for some self-care. #RuralEdChat
A4: Our kiddos often don't know how to sort out their feels and the causes. Helping them identify what's going on and why is a good first step #RuralEdChat
A4: During classtime, all I've really found to do is give them some space and time to be a little disenagaged. Following up after class or sometime 1 to 1, and asking what I can adjust to help them, tends to get a conversation going. #ruraledchat
A2: I've often sat beside a student and helped them list out and prioritize their work and help them make a plan for getting things done/getting caught up. #RuralEdChat
A4 sorry for joining late, but Grace, grace, and more grace. Sometimes we all just need a little more grace and room to make mistakes, or someone else to be our “frontal lobe” for the moment. (I ask the kids for grace too when I’m not together, they give it freely) #ruraledchat
This has been a trying winter for those of us on the #RuralEdChat moderating team. WE are all thankful for those of you that join us each week. We hope you will continue to join us as we each find our new normal after the many life adjustments that have happened.
Just this past week I told my colleagues that I was running low on Grace and felt full of vinegar. I am thankful they all understood and gave me space to breathe. #RuralEdChat
