Q1: How do you define yourself as a leader?

A combination of servant and transformational leader

A1: Caring and compassionate leader. Belief that relationships are the key to a successful school.

A1: I support and work hard to allow Ts focus on their craft. Leading and learning along w/ them.

Not sure I can define myself...other than to say, I do my best to build trust and relationships

AI: I believe a true leader, leads by example! I consider myself to be a transformational leader and influential leader.

Q2: How has your leadership style been impacted by those you have served under?

A2: I’m lucky to have an amazing mentor…so great that I moved from China to Ecuador to follow him, is amazing!

A1: I want to be thought of as innovative, helpful, empathic. A forward thinker. Someone others can count on.

A2. Each person I have worked under has impacted my style. The bad ones have prob impacted me the most...how NOT to lead!

A.2. All experiences have an impact. Try to reflect on examples and experiences daily.

Learn from the good (those who listen and model risks) and the bad (one who often said "Consider yourself lucky you have a job")

A2: I've been able to witness shared leadership between admin and Ts be successful and want to bring that approach to new school

A2: Mentorship inspires & challenges. Accepting both is a decision only we can make. Fortunate to have mentors who have done both

A2: I know I will use combos of the leadership I've worked with to be a better leader! I've had great mentors!

A2. I have learned the dos and don'ts. Most importantly I have learned to stay true to yourself and your mission/philosophy.

A2: Luckily I've been a teacher/admin under a variety of leadership styles. I've pieced together a mix of things each one did well.

Q3: In the role of an AP we often end up immersed in management. How do you maintain your role as an instructional leader?

A3: this is my 1st year as AP, our area superintendent has empowered us to be instructional leaders and has implemented strategies

Constant struggle. Schedule time in your day to be visible in classrooms.

A3: Stay organized and focused so I'm available to teachers, students, and parents when needed for instructional questions/concerns.

A3: those strategies have enabled us to focus on instruction and professional learning

A3: We have emails to answer and work to do but we don't need to be in our offices to do this. Use library, classrooms, etc

A3: finding an educational passion & sharing with others. Schedule time to coach Ts in that area. Be visible.

A3. Being available for my teachers and a support system for them.

A3: With practice and diligence!! I know that as an aspiring AP, I must master how to delegate tasks and prioritize my time wisely!

Best work is about bringing out the voices of others, stop thinking about ourselves in process....

A4: Important to find “experts” and lean on them. So many Ts have expertise that we don’t have. Empower them to lead in these areas.

A4: weekly admin team mtgs, monthly dept head mtgs, quarterly advisory committee mtgs, and random conversations with teachers

I think also about diversifying our own personal & professional networks to align ourselves with people different than us

One of the biggest dangers we can create is surrounding ourselves with people who patently agree
-
this has been so true for me. Moving from middle grades to elementary has included a huge learning curve.

A4: Important to know your staff's strenghts and weaknesses. Set them up for successful T leader roles in your building.

I've entrusted my Ts to be curriculum experts and offered suggestions where able.
-
A4:Allowing others to lead in areas of weakness! A true leader recognizes others gifts and utilizes them for the good of all.

it also gives you credibility with your staff. they realize that you aren’t the “know it all” leader

Indeed, massive need to being open to perspectives of other & as says, we need to be prepared to be wrong

A4: Plenty of work to be done, just be intentional who and what you delegate. Roles should be clearly delineated for staff.

A.4. Definitely find Teacher leaders and use them to lead others.

A4. I have invited teachers to PD that I am going to and think they would enjoy as well.

Q5: As you continue to develop as a leader, how do you keep focused on growth and maximizing your potential?

yes PLCs can be a powerful learning opportunity for our teachers.

A.5. It keeps continue to grow and stay focused, I've started , goal setting, and reflecting

A5: Remain connected to a PLN, find ways to stretch myself, take risks professionally, reflect, reflect, reflect

A5: Education is constantly changing. We can't expect Ss to grow if we're not willing to grow with them! Always stay current!

A5: being reflective about what I'm doing, engage in professional learning, be intentional about relationships

Take advantage of opportunities to facilitate PD, and teach. Keeps you in the know.

A5. Growing mindset. I am constantly learning and if I am not. Something is wrong, and I need to seek out a learning opportunity. 😊
