Hi Jeremy! Thanks for stopping in !
A1: Being CR means addressing many layers of Ss not limited to race/ethinticity, but also SES & having high learning expectations.
A1) Encouraging cultural awareness, being present and addressing bias.
Hey , Jordan checking in from MI - 8th grade ELA. Glad I can finally join you all after a busy night of parent-teacher conferences!:)

A1: We need to do more, but one thing we do is hold a multicultural night each year
Culturally responsive means making intentional decisions to keep multiple perspectives at the table
A1) A welcoming climate to students and families of all backgrounds, and staff with curiosity about them. https://t.co/0sToZhpNzb
Such a critical questions to ask! Helps ensure all perspectives are being considered.

A1: Being aware of what cultures and diversities my Ss bring to the table and using those to create more meaningful lessons.
thx glad to be here! Always ready to learn!
Keep your eyes peeled! Q2 on the way…
Yes! We often confuse CR with multicultural education. Different purposes although there's overlap
Maureen from Maryland- Excited to be part of this on culturally responsive schools
A1: Promoting an inclusive community where all are welcome.
Sometimes we need some uncomfortableness for growth to occur. https://t.co/R8qf7jAXrE
Can't be afraid to be uncomfortable when addressing tough issues!
Research shows SES is cause of achievement gap not race! Great point!
Little late but here to support some eduheroes of mine! 5th grade teacher from Utah Mostly lurking and learning from ya'll :)
Addressing cultural diversity as a way of access for/to community
A1: being mindful, aware, respectful of the fact that Sts come to us with differences, but that they will still b accepted by all
A1: Our school's motto is every child, every chance, every day. No matter who or what, each child deserves success
A1. Knowing and understanding ourselves in addition to accepting/respecting others
A1 Making real, personalized connections crosses all cultural differences.
All should be welcome in school including their families!
A1: As a science teacher, I think it's important for all students to see "themselves" as scientists. I'm not doing a great job, yet.
A1-In our district every school has an equity team that supports staff's development of a CR lens
Good point. I'm holding baseball tryouts nxt wk and 2 players spoke to me about not being able to afford a glove
A1. We have found that it is critical to listen. Sometimes schools make assumptions about a culture or cultural values
A1 Recognizing this helps us include these cultural references in all aspects of learning - https://t.co/kb1L0NU0PK
A1: Being CR means addressing many layers of Ss not limited to race/ethinticity, but also SES & having high learning expectations.
A1: i believe my district works to be culturally responsive basced on communication, Ss/fam programs etc
A1) continually building relationships with students and their families
Schools should be welcoming to all & a safe place to learn and grow!
Lurk away! So glad you're here my friend!
A2: Worldview needs to be as broad as possible - have an open mind
Great question to ask! https://t.co/kN9002so80
A1: In our district, we are asking: "does this policy/procedure/etc exclude any of our different populations of Ss or parents?"
A2: We bring our upbringing, cultural views & experiences in every situation. Have to be open to Ss perspectives & willing to adjust
A1: Culturally Responsive means being in touch with S & connecting with them through necessary means.
Agreed--how do we make this happen when many adults have had negative experiences with schools. https://t.co/86y0fWh7wP
Schools should be welcoming to all & a safe place to learn and grow!
I never thought I could connect with 8th graders in the Bronx when I started teaching but I loved them and I think they loved me too
A2-Creating CR schools requires us to confront our implicit biases
The connection has to be genuine! I think some educators struggle w/how to make a genuine connection w/some Ss.
Teacher's mission accomplished- https://t.co/azENzHAY85
I never thought I could connect with 8th graders in the Bronx when I started teaching but I loved them and I think they loved me too
A2: If we are narrow-minded & unaccepting of others, it is virtually impossible to hide it from our Sts. We need to lead by example.
A2 Modeling compassion, caring, and truly listening to others are important values regardless of personal world views.
A2: As educators we need to be aware of biases we also hold and deeply examine these before becoming truly culturally responsive.
A2: can impact pos or neg depending on experience
A2: Teachers aren't used to talking about cultural differences beyond heroes and holidays. Self-awareness help build trust with Ss
We aren't just educating Ss, but their parents as well! Have to rebuild Ps faith in school.
A2: It shouldn't impact it because it does if educator's mindset doesn't have room for diversity https://t.co/qJQEgAD5UZ
A2) We need to know who we are, and who we are not. We can aim to appreciate & respect what we may never fully understand
Jamie from WI. MS ss T. Joining a little late.
A2: I think it's important to not only be aware of biases that we may contribute to,but be aware of how the students perceive things
But what a powerful opportunity to share about famous black scientists!
A2 You are a mixture of all that you have been exposed to but you still need to expose yourself to more. https://t.co/eyz4HalNSW
IMPORTANT POINT! https://t.co/bEv5nBTbcT
A2) We need to know who we are, and who we are not. We can aim to appreciate & respect what we may never fully understand
A2) We are the sum of our live experiences and interactions. Each different and unique. All special.
A2: Ss also need to rid themselves of bias and prejudices sometimes, too
🎯🎯🎯 Super Truth! https://t.co/kcKYndHcdS
A2: As educators we need to be aware of biases we also hold and deeply examine these before becoming truly culturally responsive.
A2: Our backgrounds define "normal." Ss backgrounds may not define the same "normal." We have to be aware of this.
A2: the worldview can be either positive or negative...educators must look past the negative worldviews
Absolutely! Have to be intentional with overcoming biases.
A strong educator must look beneath a S culture and observe how the S interacts with their cultural values
A2: it's about awareness..
Never too late to join in! Welcome Jamie!
A1: Culturally responsive means a school & class prepped for all who to feel included and valued https://t.co/m1R9Yb4GRj
Evening everyone. Brent from Katy, TX jumping in late. Just got kids in bed! Phew!!
A2: Ts have to understand what micro aggressions look like. This reduces Ss sense of trust with us. Parents too.
Everyone want to feel valued!
A3: Treating all students equally--it may seem like the right thing to do, but it may not be culturally responsive.
A3) challenging people to think differently, raise awareness, experience uncomfortableness, and still push forward
A2 Reflect on fears, assumptions, stereotypes; honest conversations to better understand our Ss & each other.
👌🏾Awesome explanation of "normal" & how it impacts our decisions. https://t.co/jfcAgcA60R
A2: Our backgrounds define "normal." Ss backgrounds may not define the same "normal." We have to be aware of this.
A3: Too often seen as an "add-on" or touchy-feely.
A3 If your school lacks diversity in an "group", it can limit the opportunity to learn about other groups. https://t.co/xbjlOLWzVV
Agreed. Also key to know that P culture and values may differ from their Ss. This adds another layer. https://t.co/sK2OwztKJd
A2: Our backgrounds define "normal." Ss backgrounds may not define the same "normal." We have to be aware of this.
A3: understanding that difficult conversations MUST occur in order to get to the REAL solutions
A3 Challenges are many and varied, really depends on staff demographics and willingness to continually grow https://t.co/6egwFCji5T
A2) This is everything for those who work with kids. You must be self-aware enough to recognize any biases. https://t.co/hHPbt6rw1C
A3: Some don't see the potential to help students to deep learning and build their brain power. But starts with trust.
A3: Fear of the unknown, changing what's always been done, or facing the challenges of the unwilling participant
I am just dropping in from my other amazing chat (); Akilah, Professional Learning Specialist, from VA. glad to be here
A3) The challenge starts with the staff- creating the awareness of implicit bias- building bridges not fences.
A3: Biases of teachers, parents, and students can discourage some Ts.
A3: Challenges stem from teachers being ignorant of the problem in the first place
. "There is no normal."--Angus Bethune.
A3: Greatest challenge is Ts mistaking showing more sympathy than empathy. Life's tough, but can't be a Ss crutch for success.
A2: It's ok to be uncomfortable. You have to be reflective, know who you serve and respond accordingly.
This is hard. No one wants to face a long-standing hidden bias. It makes us feel vulnerable. https://t.co/wKCeS0djas
A3) The challenge starts with the staff- creating the awareness of implicit bias- building bridges not fences.
Great point! Have to always consider Ps & their influence.
A3: Sometimes challenges arise when Ts do not correct Ss or when they don't model well enough
Teachers and schools are busy places. It's important for leaders to craft opportunities for staff to learn a communities cultures
BOOM! https://t.co/uMBJdwfEl8
A3: Greatest challenge is Ts mistaking showing more sympathy than empathy. Life's tough, but can't be a Ss crutch for success.
A3) Creating a Growth Mindset School Culture is a great place to start!
A3 It starts with leadership. Leaders must do their best to model fairness, equity, and caring as foundational values.
A3: Challenges are those who don't want to change and feel like they don't relate. We don't have to look alike to relate.
Fair is not always equal... https://t.co/ROgTDz1DsF
A3: Treating all students equally--it may seem like the right thing to do, but it may not be culturally responsive.
We don't realize that until we step out of our "normal" and see that not everyone lives or embraces it. https://t.co/yzVByaDIPX
. "There is no normal."--Angus Bethune.
Absolutely! Ts and staff need training in cultural awareness as much as content PD.
A3) Lack of buy-in; blindness to the concept of cultural responsiveness; placing responsibility all on kids. https://t.co/cEahPHqPdU
or have come from same background or have similar experiences
But growth mindset has to be coupled with giving Ss counter narratives about who they are and what they are capable of.
Very interesting. Sympathy leads to an unbalanced relationship with Ps and indicates has versus has nots https://t.co/Lfx57pNLXl
A3: Greatest challenge is Ts mistaking showing more sympathy than empathy. Life's tough, but can't be a Ss crutch for success.
A3: challenges r systems in place that perpetuate the current processes. How can u go left when districts goes right?
Blindness is real issue. If Ldrship teams & staff aren't diverse how would they know what they don't know?!
A4: Just understanding that everyone has something they are struggling with and to be empathetic
. One of the reasons we've begun each year with ANGUS a for 12 years. Great film for teaching monomyth.
We have added this PD this year. Should be a priority in every district. https://t.co/2QABvo6SA0
Absolutely! Ts and staff need training in cultural awareness as much as content PD.
Thanks! Such an important topic that most chats shy away from. Want to end discrimination? Raise CR Ss.
Q4: Consider training Tchrs to talent spot beyond test scores. Look for cognitive abilities: creativity, logic, spatial, leadership
Wow, this crosses over so well to tonight. https://t.co/y1R67jzA6M
It makes such a difference when Ts know their students as humans outside of the student role! Great point. https://t.co/WegziPgDC9
We work a lot on interests... it helps that I looped with my kids, so I know them so well as readers and humans!
A3: One of the challenges can be helping Ss not only see how cultures differ & how to relate but also what they have in common.
Advocacy becomes critical! Reach out into community to create ground swell movement!
I have to go but I plan on returning to read some of the rest of the chat later! It was wondeful!
I have to go but I plan on returning to read some of the rest of the chat later! It was wondeful!
Educators need to view cultural responsiveness as a flexible adventure. Community demographics, needs, and values can shift.
through equitable practices
But NECESSARY for growth! https://t.co/7sdiaAKTPt
This is hard. No one wants to face a long-standing hidden bias. It makes us feel vulnerable. https://t.co/wKCeS0djas
A3) The challenge starts with the staff- creating the awareness of implicit bias- building bridges not fences.
A4: Get to know students outside of the classroom. Being a coach has been awesome for me personally
A4 This year we tried to identify strengths/interests in Ss and to recognize growth/achieve in areas of mindset
Q4: this was my fav part of international teaching. Everyone has a perspective unique to them. Even in a rural WI school I'm at now
Empathy is necessary trait when dealing with all people!Helps us see their perspective so we can help move them forward.
Before we recognize indiv Ss, we must begin to explore our own biases nah how it impacts and inform our teaching practises
A4: Yes, CR is a mindset, but it is also a set of cultural learning tools that help cognition. Learning begins w/ relationshiip
Should be a requirement of all districts even if heir Ss or Ts aren't diverse. Where else will hey learn?
A4 Classes organized into team communities; encourage academic/cultural excellence; small group, multi-grade advisory groups
What awesome sharing tonight! Q5 on the way…
Culturally Responsive training should begin in undergrad. I wish we would get real about this. Diversity isn't new.
you mean not seeing certain families from a strengths-based approach?
Has your school included any experiences into the community to build local awareness? https://t.co/raeyxk9aO5
We have added this PD this year. Should be a priority in every district. https://t.co/2QABvo6SA0
Absolutely! Ts and staff need training in cultural awareness as much as content PD.
I was just thinking this same thing. https://t.co/D8JiB2OCvG
Should be a requirement of all districts even if heir Ss or Ts aren't diverse. Where else will hey learn?
Absolutely! Toughest part of middle level is teaching Ss it's not always about them & to be empathetic.
We added empathy to our core values this year. Eagles RISE: respect, integrity, safety, empathy https://t.co/elSHDaIEFy
A4: Just understanding that everyone has something they are struggling with and to be empathetic
coaching is like getting to know a whole new person than who is in the classroom sometimes!
Yes, and we have to bring the common cultural practices, like social learning, into the classroom
Great point! Helps to cultivate respect, tolerance and collaboration. https://t.co/A70gXmuOE4
A3: One of the challenges can be helping Ss not only see how cultures differ & how to relate but also what they have in common.
A5: SQUASH any examples of disrespect from S to S!
Sympathy can lead to fixed mindset. Edu is the way out & we must have same high expectations of all Ss.
Then it's abt leveraging the relationship so you can help get kids into their ZPD. It's the fuel. https://t.co/ICw68G1RxY
A4: Growth mindset is critical & must be the norm for all students!
A5: Sorry to sound cliche but cold-calling on Ss helps a little so T does not "play favorites"
A5: have a growth mindset with equitable practices...we'd be amazed at how far positive thinking & equity can get us..
True! As warm demanders we have to help Ss who have experienced failure regain faith in their own learning https://t.co/rQ2EDhzE25
Sympathy can lead to fixed mindset. Edu is the way out & we must have same high expectations of all Ss.
Yep! That's how Ss move out of their tough situations.
A5: Also, admin must dole out disciplinary measures equitably!
Ts need to develop growth mindset to teach/pass on to Ss- enforce mindset in the classroom
A4: Building relationships with Ss is a must. They need to feel safe enough in the classroom to explore and value their own voice.
A5: By taking time to ask Qs and listen. Desire to truly understand their culture vs. simply accepting what you THINK you know.
A5: We need to treat Sts as individuals and not make judgements about them before knowing them.
Video a class and review to look for your own cultural biases that you may not perceive when you're teaching.
Can you believe it? Halfway mark! Be sure follow the folks participating & build your PLN! Q6 on it's way...
Great question! Also, how do we support Ss who aren't accepted bc they don't fit the stereotype? https://t.co/QtsFK5iKRJ
A5: Adults must first change their mindsets...
A5: We must first know our own prejudices & exercise a healthy dose of & in order to model for students
A6: Be mindful of how partners/groups are formed in the classroom
Working to strengthen parent/community relationships and connections. P/S Councils working together. https://t.co/0n9bLF78he
Has your school included any experiences into the community to build local awareness? https://t.co/raeyxk9aO5
We have added this PD this year. Should be a priority in every district. https://t.co/2QABvo6SA0
Absolutely! Ts and staff need training in cultural awareness as much as content PD.
A5: Ts have to get to know students as learners and be in partnership with parents for understanding authentic cultural elements
A5: Get to know your Ss & Ps through authentic relationships; stereotypes won't b a factor. This is where understanding comes from
A6: Greet every St at the door each day to make a connection with all Sts. Provides an opportunity to connect + chat with STs.
A6 Look around classroom/school- what messages are being given intentionally/unintentionally- Is there evidence of all being valued?
A6: work on making connections as human beings. There is a lot of common ground that connects us just because of our humanity.
A6: Learn how to say Ss names correctly; Display all Ss work; Learn another Lang; Ride on school bus 4 perspective; be involved.
A6: Ts should not be afraid to ask questions appropriately and respectfully to get to know students' cultural backgrounds
A6: Make them feel valued, appreciated regardless of their bkground...listening to them...they have stories to tell too
Favorite part of day is to greet my kids other than the high-fives as they leave my classroom :)
This is one of my fav topics, but I have to run!
Yes! Groups should be diverse!
Celebrate uniqueness and individuality! We can't all be the same. Find examples of the "new normal" https://t.co/H0WNvyhrfI
Great question! Also, how do we support Ss who aren't accepted bc they don't fit the stereotype? https://t.co/QtsFK5iKRJ
Fist bumps all day for me https://t.co/zwhLj13fLj
Favorite part of day is to greet my kids other than the high-fives as they leave my classroom :)
Takes time to get to know Ss but so worth it!
You all are AWESOME! Q7 up next…
What a great idea! You should join our Voxer group & share more!
A6: A Favorite Bonnie Davis technique- doing a daily "check in " question with kids. Really listen to their answers.
I sincerely apologize each time I botch a name. (My downfall is the Polish names in my district but I try!)
Listening is such a powerful strategy. Many times Ss & fams just want it be heard.
Ss writing conferences last week allowed me to connect 1-to-1 & talk about Ss personal interests too. Very valuable!
The one thing we all have in common, Earth 😆 https://t.co/G2atryUo3L
A6: work on making connections as human beings. There is a lot of common ground that connects us just because of our humanity.
Gotta put the kids to bed. Thanks for letting me chat with you tonight!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
A5: Show genuine interest in Ss lives/diversities. Educate yourself about these differences!
schools reflect our society. We need empathy in both places. But the change can originate in the classroom.
Absolutely! That's where the learning occurs for both Ts & Ss.
Q7 Rigor is like a restaurant menu- different types of learning modes that challenge your thinking (taste buds) AND expand knowledge
And they appreciate you trying & apology! That's what counts!
"You know not bc you ask not." Better to ask out of genuine interest - this is modeling for other Ss in class.
Great strategy to really get to know your kids!
We tell our students to ask questions. So YES we should also! Learning starts with wonder/a desire to know
A7: Rigor needs to be differentiated. What is rigorous for one student may be a breeze for another.
Dan you're awesome! Thanks for stopping in! Really enjoyed your feedback!
Gotta run. Thanks everyone for a thoughtful discussion about CRT. (not always the case). Looking forward to other chats on CR
A7: It means providing Sts with multiple ways to grow as learners and show what they learned.
You really added depth to the chat with your responses! Thanks you!
Love it 💕 https://t.co/R8euLvbh8s
Q7 Rigor is like a restaurant menu- different types of learning modes that challenge your thinking (taste buds) AND expand knowledge
Want to keep the convo going all week? Msg me to join the VOXER group! Q8 around the corner…
Want to keep the convo going all week? Msg me to join the VOXER group! Q8 around the corner…
A7: Rigor should also include choice, & a student centered approach to real world application- which will motivate and engage
You're the hostess with the mostest! Thanks again
it empowers students, too, to be the teachers as much as the learners.
A7 High expectations but different approaches to learning and assessing.
Absolutely!!! https://t.co/Pjsn1tNc4T
A7: Rigor needs to be differentiated. What is rigorous for one student may be a breeze for another.
Q4 Doing things that include them, interjecting diversity in my lessons, playing music, and recognizing celebrations beyond my own
A7: Rigor, I believe, is more on a S by S basis rather than on a culture by culture basis. Individualized differentiation is key.
Definitely ! Most definitely! https://t.co/oct10bpDUz
it empowers students, too, to be the teachers as much as the learners.
Great plan! https://t.co/W4kYQCWyPO
Q4 Doing things that include them, interjecting diversity in my lessons, playing music, and recognizing celebrations beyond my own
Respectful learning tasks + instruction show Ts earnestly embrace Ss as people. Groups & tasks should be dynamic.
A8: If what we teach is culturally relevant to our students, it has the ability to make huge impacts on their future
Yepper! I see that every day! what's that? https://t.co/CGtaVPb6Jl
A7: Rigor needs to be differentiated. What is rigorous for one student may be a breeze for another.
A8: Be open to explaining to Ss WHY they're learning what they are. Make sure that they see the relevance too!
Q7:End of unit, reflection backward/forward/inside/outside (how does what I did effect other cultures)-do this enough-make an impact
Gotta run! Family time with my better half. Great topic w/ awesome, thought provoking Qs! Keep up the great work!
A8: Examine their beliefs, dig deeper, & listen to the thoughts of others. What we think is right isn't always right or best.
A7)All have access to a rigorous education (equality). Each student gets what (s)he needs to learn (equity). https://t.co/ovXF1Fc16O
Students appreciate a teacher's genuine interest in them - beyond the books! Makes a BIG difference. https://t.co/WKc0l3RlAs
A5: Show genuine interest in Ss lives/diversities. Educate yourself about these differences!
Today's blog: Why what we're doing isn't working. Looking at continuous improvement models. https://t.co/ZgZFN5u9Wc
Thanks for stopping in Brent! Your thoughts kicked the chat up a few notches!👌🏾
A8: Assignments that are applicable to Ss lives regardless of what their future goals may be. A lot of this has to do with choice!
🎯Reflection is our moment to pause & think how can we do better. Ss need this too!
I think some only think about diversity. I think that misses the responsive part and it's easy to treat all Ss the same
A9: Create multiple learning paths for Sts and let them choose the path that is best for them.
I agree! Each student learns differently and has different gifts to bring. Especially with collaboration.
Yes! And Ts can't be so attached to lesson/novel they've always taught if it's not impactful for Ss siting in class.
A9: Authentic learning opps, differentiated instruction, thinking through cultural connections, higher order questions
Q9: - Start at earliest age possible to guide students from being dependent to independent learners.
Yes!!! We have to be flexible to meet the needs of all of our Ss!
Yes! Ss in Elem need choice & voice as much as older Ss.
LAST question for tonight dropping any minute! Don’t forget to join us on Blab for the AFTER PARTY! https://t.co/vwbKUk4xnj
Every question here takes us back to the importance of building genuine, strong relationships w/ Sts
A9 Allowing Ss to use their own cultural learning process to master content.
A10: How well do you know your students? (whew...yep, even the difficult to reach ones...those prob most)
A10: what are our students perceptions of how we are doing and where we can improve?
A perfect Thursday night: First DQ of the season, , and a brand new Scandal.:)))🍦🍎🍷🇺🇸
Exactly! Relationships= cornerstone to change, growth, learning & communication. Difference b/w what & how you say it.
THANKS everyone for sharing your thoughts on such a critical topic!
A10: The REAL question to ask to be culturally responsible is to ask our stakeholders HOW can we be more culturally responsible.
A10: What biases do we have regarding some Sts?
Only two more minutes until chat! It's going to be a great chat! Join us!
A9: Choice, choice, choice! Help Ss see that their voice matters and that they have some power in the classroom.
Thank YOU for hosting such an important Great thought provoking questions!
