A2. @smokeylit shares in his book how the teachers at Eason began by "subtracting something from their day to make time for short, well-structured lesson that they used w/ inquiry." pg. xv Graphic by @trev_mackenzie#BookCampPD

A2. I bet many of you have "Wonder Walls" in your classroom? If you show students a photo of what one could look like, they could create it themselves and have them add it to ongoing throughout the day when they have something they wonder about. #BookCampPD
A2 I’m not sure ... I am working on sts choosing enjoyable books to read independently... I would hope that some are choosing books that would teach them something new (but I need more help in this area 😍) #BookCampPD

A3. When students need additional support often a teaching asst., volunteer, peer friend from a higher grade, connection with Big Brother or Sister so someone in the building can easily offer it. Everyone improves together! #BookCampPD
A2: I would say that 10-2 strategy works for me.
Teach 10 minutes & take 2 minutes for students to interact and ask question and challenge new learning #BookCampPD
A2. I was thinking about setting up a Wonder Wall, and encouraging Ss to explore their interests in the library--especially since I see them all! More than likely they will find someone who is interested in the same thing they are. #BookCampPD#curiousclassroom
A3. @SaraKAhmed shared a graphic of her brainstorming "Who I Am" This would also be helpful for students to gain a greater understanding of the commonalities they share. #BookCampPD
A3. During the #BookCampPD summer focus we chatted about the book "Being the Change" and learned the importance of "Identity Statements." Students "I am ..." statements go a long way toward understanding each other.
A2 Inquiry is not an add on to what you already do-it's a mindset of how you approach learning & teaching within your programs that you already design-so it's looking at the ways that you can incorporate strategies to promote Ss inquiry about the topics & learning #BookCampPD
A3. @smokeylit shared his "Identity Web" on page 26 to show students the idea. He mentioned how students "begin to learn about each other even before their webs are complete." @KristinZiemke takes this idea to the next step w/ "Partner Venns" pg 29. LOVE these!! #BookCampPD

Wonderwalls are a terrific way for ongoing formative assessment of Ss continually adding through the sequence of the learning which can then inform your teaching #BookCampPD
I like to include projects into my units. We just finished a project on Biomimicry and the Ss loved it. They were engaged and invested in trying to solve a human problem. #BookCampPD

A4. @SmokeyLit shared an example of a teacher who began with 15 minutes 1st thing in the morning where Ss had quiet time where they could choose something to learn about. Next came Wonder Walls. #BookCampPD
A4. Many years ago when I first learned tremendous value of students "wondering" rather than teachers spewing out facts, I created HUGE banners for all classrooms in our school that simply said, "I wonder ....." It was introduced in a staff meeting and banners shared. #BookCampPD
A3: so proud of a little in showing empathy. The other day another child started to comment about a peer's artic issues. My little showed great empathy by saying, Its' okay we all learn and talk in our own ways. Love that they get it. #BookCampPD
A3: The culture we, as educators, create in our classroom influences greatly how our students react to one another’s identity.
It’s important for students to have a sense of acceptance to be able to take risk when it comes to inquiries.
#BookCampPD
A3. creating an atmosphere where everyone's differences are accepted and encouraged to be unique. Provide support and time to those that may not have had any at home etc. #bookcamppd
A5. I just adore the idea in this book about students following a webcam - have your students ever done this? I can assure you, "I wonder ...." statements will bubble out of their mouths SO quickly! #BookCampPD
A5. In our after-school program the students wanted to learn more about the history of the rural community. There was a Native American reservation w/in the boundaries. Students collected oral histories in order to pass down these stories for generations. Made DVD #BookCampPD
A4: I am a huge believer in soft starts- this is from one day last week - everyone engaged and getting the start they need to the day #curiousclassroom#BookCampPD
A3. If a student doesn't have support at home then we have to model what empathy looks like. We also have to support students by providing experiences that they can be successful at so that they develop confidence and a positive identity. #BookCampPD
A4: I think we all need to start out our days in a way that will prepare us for the whole day. We need to reflect on our day and how we are feeling. What do we need to do to move on etc. #bookcamppd
A6 I am just SO excited about this book! These are the kinds of activities that make being a teacher so very worthwhile. If you haven't grabbed your copy yet https://t.co/tbMIZmJqnr Another thing is that no matter what aspect of education you're in this book is GREAT! #BookCampPD
A4: As a school we have a 10 min soft start and then go into a 15 minute morning meeting - daily! The atmosphere and behavior in our building is so much better this year. #BookCampPD
A4Today I am wondering about.....Something I watched made me think about....Someone told me xx & it made me curious about....I am puzzled about.... Yesterday when we were learning I was pondering....My question for my learning is....Sentence stems for soft start chats #BookCampPD
A4. I was drawn to the way it mentioned kids suffering from "toxic stress." With their school schedules, after school activities, etc. I wonder if we are putting too much on kids and not allowing them to be kids. A soft start to the day would alleviate some of that. #BookCampPD
A4: I start each morning with handshakes. Students them come into the classroom and greet one another. It is a great way to start our day. #BookCampPD#curiousclassroom
Please thank @kmichellehowell for being our guest moderator this evening!
Join us again next Sunday at 7:30 EST when we continue to chat about the marvelous ideas in #TheCuriousClassroom and then Children's Literature Books later in December!!
#BookCampPD
A2: I love to foster inquiry through art! No matter the skill or topic, I can usually find wonderful pieces of art to incorporate. Art naturally launches question and curiosity, which we can build upon, or it serves to close a unit and inspire "Now What?" moments. #BookCampPD
A3: One of my favorite things to teach is perspective and point of view. All year long, we look at topics in history from multiple perspectives. We also read literature from different points of view. I think different perspectives helps with empathy. #curiousclassroom
A4: Soft start! Students need to know we are welcoming them with all our love!! A hard start would have a higher affective filter and students will shutdown. Not good for learning
#bookcamppd
A2: Allowing students to have choice in their reading is very important. My students read online with @EpicKidsBooks One student recently researched Thailand and Laos to find out more about his culture. ❤️📚 #curiousclassroom
A4 if a “soft start” means greeting at the door and asking how their day is going ... then Yes! ... social skills are necessary and positive #BookCampPD
