#TeacherEdChat Archive
We invite all educators to contribute to the conversation of preparing preservice teachers as well as practicing teachers for the realities of the 21st-century classroom. This includes principals, in-service teachers, university supervisors of student teachers, education professors, higher education administration, instructional technology specialists, and so on. Anyone with a vested interest in supporting our teachers in preparation for teaching the diverse K-12 student population is invited to participate.

Q1: How can we promote activities in school?
A1 we should have more projects that use recycled or sustainable materials
How are you achieving the use of recycled or sustainable materials in schools?
A1: First, we need to make sure students know what is then see what they know about the day
A1:The science teacher at my school showed a documentary about plastic & it got the kids thinking about how to make a change
Excellent. What are some plastics that the students discussed?
we use cardboard boxes for build parts. We use old papers for paper folding activities
The documentary mentioned what plastic was actually getting recycled and how there is a patch of plastic hurting wildlife.
Are those projects part of Makerspace activities?
yes we emphasize reusing materials
is going now, if you can join and share ideas
Q2:What resources can you share for .
going now, if you can join and share ideas
we do not have anything specific, but we talk about it all the time
A2: Scholastics always has great information for teachers when it comes to Earth Day
A2 Google Earth, Maps Street View are what come to mind first
thanks Judy, glad to be here. I haven't taught science in a long time but maybe Google Earth to look at formations.
A1: Will this work? Unplug the photocopier for the day.
Our final question tonight will address how spans all disciplines
Unplug the photocopier for much longer than a day
Sssssttttttaaaaaaccccyyyy
We're still on Q2: What resources can you share for Share on
Do you really still use photocopiers?
I try to scan as much as I can into my computer to have it available for the students immediately. Less paper!
I try to scan as much as I can into my computer to have it available for the students immediately. Less paper!
Same here: I don't know the code for the school copy machine, and don't need it
All of the faculty at school must walk, ride bike, public transit or carpool for https://t.co/rxQl0R0lvO
Unplug the photocopier for much longer than a day
Love the idea of giving up cars, but wonder how many would do for more than a day
Been teaching for 5 years
When i visit classroom, I see piles of photocopied handouts. What do teachers think students do w/ these copies later?
Q3 coming up in one minute
I flip them over and use them for sheets
Hope you can jump into now where we're discussing
Curious, what do you do instead then? Just put it on the projector and have them respond in their notebook?
All materials are on website & students share their work w/ Google Apps & other digital tools
Carpooling for those who live farther. Will online learning help with using less fossil fuels? https://t.co/D8bAXr0Ypf
Only if ppl live closer to work places. Mir pjts underway in France. Clusters of housing/work/shopping all walk/bike
That would be for to follow up
We can put our resources and materials online w/out teaching online
we cut up old papers and use them in our paper mache projects
How have you been Melissa? We're sharing ideas for now on
What kinds of activities do you think work best to celebrate Day ?
Educational leadership and management issues surrounding assessment practice.
Hi Torrey, and thanks for jumping in on
For the lower grades, planting a seed and documenting growth would be great and a nice gift for Mom on mother's day!
Great idea and could be used to celebrate other occasions as well https://t.co/dXNaAcHryq

Agree, students should be the ones driving ideas
Q3: What activities do you think work best to celebrate Day ?
How about spending the day outdoors on with the students?
Perfect, but what topics do you suggest for discussion or what activities? https://t.co/LyphADwYFh
How about spending the day outdoors on with the students?
If we take students outside for , what might they do to promote the concept?
Getting the entire class outside
Students & teacher taking off shoes and socks
And walking in grass/woods/sand
For

I am in HS library now.We are lucky to hv Environmental Science Academy.Hoping to hv S's display nature journals :)
In a class of 31 college students I found out that only one had been fro a walk in the woods in the prior ten years. Fix?
Most do. 'Til we move to environment w/ more access to devices, how do we get around paper waste?
I see some stuff where the paper space is not used very efficiently... 3 problems on a page! WHAT?!
Amazing & hard to believe. We should all celebrate w/ walk in woods or park
"Doing " something for earth day is maybe too many steps ahead of the students. How about getting students outdoors first?
So many good ideas; share w/
Really seems every school teacher/school should do something for as well as beyond https://t.co/P7N2ZlKGt5
"Doing " something for earth day is maybe too many steps ahead of the students. How about getting students outdoors first?
Even works in Vermont snow if only done for a few minutes.
Q4: What are ways to build global connections for ?
We use Blended Learning book in our course Integrating Tech & Literacy
Love doing Skype, GHangout, Virtual Tours, and students find them motivating, enlightening
Ppl tend to think other races/species all the same. Have students try to find 2 identical "anythings."
Not possible. All diff
Not just 3 questions on a paper, but much stuff on paper not needed
A4: What other countries do to protect the Earth and what sustainable material means around the world & what others do
Keep going w/ Q4 & here is another one: Q5: Why does need to be celebrated across grade levels & disciplines??
A5: Though some think in schools is domain of science, it is at core of all disciplines
A5: To ensure that all of our students know what the Earth gives us and how we need to take care of it just like family.
