This community = all the senseis.
Hi, friends! Here for a few min... Miss y'all! Hope everyone not already coming to is doing for free badge
Let's get this shin dig started!, Q1 coming up! and hey !
Hello! So happy to make it! Shannon from Oakland!
Hi everyone, Dvora here from Los Angeles, Educational therapist, curriculum designer
Q1: What does literacy across the curriculum look like? This a 'hot button' phrase for anyone else lately? ;)
James from Atlanta Happy New year
Hey and you guys are just in time! Q1 just hit the presses!
Happy new year from Brooklyn friends!
I believe I follow this wonderful guy! I will look him up!
A1 Literacy across curric looks like problem solving & meaning making by drawing upon skills & content in variety of disciplines
thanks for the love Kevin
ann. there he is! Knew you wouldn't let me down on THIS topic :)
A1 S ability to use strategies to sustain & expand meaning across several disciplines based on awareness of current understanding
A1a: Literacy covers such a broad array of skills that it is critical when discussing learning.
Love a good recommendation!
not too much, meaning: quick, come and visit before the plate gets too full
your experiments and enthusiasm have offered up so much energy to this writing!
James Campbell in the house!
I will be there sooner than you know
A1 maybe the convo is because of the need to shift from single subjects to integrating content
we're starting to see more disciplines and subject areas incorporate literacy into their curriculum
In HS Literacy across the curriculum means it isn't just the Eng teacher who can have students writing and reading in class
A1) literacy - either fluency w reading or fluency w a specific given skillset. " literacy" might be more critical thinking
and from an English teacher, that answer gets an abounding YES!
A1 Standards reached a tipping pt where Ss can't possibly master the breadth, and need to go deeper to learn
I'm just kissing up to the moderator!
GREAT point- too often we forget that we can achieve literacy in other areas!
Just popping on to let my friends know I officially started a new job at the DOE w/ yesterday!
A1. You know, I don't even know what this means anymore! I've been thinking so much about multiple literacies...
A1 Reading, Writing, & Numeracy skills can be practiced across topics. Along with tech skills, research skills, 4Cs, etc
A1 my Ss can't keep up, and need instruction to integrate literacy
Something I didn't realize until several years into my science teaching career!
A1: Literacy is effective discussion and communication of ideas and inquiries
A1b: Both my roles as a music T and a librarian have given me a broad sense of literacy; Like this: https://t.co/kW9Jsrgcwq
A1 we are moving towards a humanities course next year so maybe I can answer in the fall.
I think the communication and inquiry pieces are so critical but can often be overlooked as less important
Looking forward to connecting w/ everyone on all things https://t.co/vfApXYBUzz
Just popping on to let my friends know I officially started a new job at the DOE w/ yesterday!
A1. It means being able to learn from the past, and articulate/shape the future - in any discipline. Language the human medium.
no better place for inspiration than right here!
WOOOOOT!!!!!!! Congrats! !
A1. I do think that not every teacher has a good view of mutl literacies. HMW expand the idea of literacy w/our Ts and ourselves?
Ooops...ironic typo there :) Feel I should try that again, with more literacy!
A1 I think Literacy comes in play by being able to communicate to various audiences no matter the subject
Q2 So in regards to literacy in the reading/writing arena, how do you promote literacy when using the design process?
agree. Q1 is a tough one to grab a hold of."literacy" seems precious and hard to define. but is it?
my mind wandering... HMW redefine *education*?!? And if education is the process, is literacy the assessable?
A1. Language is the human medium. It means being able to learn from the past and articulate/shape the future in any discipline.
A2. In Discovery, it's so important during research & uncovering, we explore how that info might be applied to the solution
I am definitely going down the rabbit hole on this one...
I think its fluid in context, which could make it even more difficult to 'achieve' in a standardized sense
A2 Empathy requires literacy. Empathy should be revisited throughout. Literacy should be promoted throughout
A2) seems critical discovery phase... Reading for info, intent, hidden need and hidden agenda. Bias and reliability literacy
I would suggest that "literacy"in the innovation economy is much different than literacy in the industrial era.
only when we become obsessed w narrow def'n of literacy as "reading ability" & testable skills
A2. Emphasis that word choice is sooo powerful in design. How we ask questions. How we name ideas. How we articulate principles.
A2 discover phase I think it comes by reading background info on topic or researching what exit & later by sharing your results
can you say more about that? it's an intriguing idea requiring literacy -- how so?
A2: We do character studies in literature to become more effective designers. practicing and exploring life situations
A2: 1/?: Character = End User connections; writing interviews; creating a "story" with empathy; ideation for topics/solutions...
A2 literacy as verbal and written expression with clarity is important for all steps ex. interviewing/expressing users' needs
And I would suggest that's a suggestion https://t.co/vpRnRWQglo
I would suggest that "literacy"in the innovation economy is much different than literacy in the industrial era.
A2 There are some very important new literacies: Emotional Intelligence, Compassion, Group Thinking, Agency, Initiative, etc
The interview process lends itself so well to communication and inquiry!
. Same here; designing meaningful/insightful tiny house for Lennie req's legit understanding of the text & needs
A2: 2/? Research; for ex. using Big6 method & connecting to DT process.
if I understand correctly, interviewing is important in different stages of
A2 Literacy today is about your strengths, interests, values, passions, digital fluency, problem solving fluency, etc
I had an awesome crash/burn w collaboration literacy w KGs today! Holy moly they're on a different level from 2nds.
I am just going to sit back and listen to about this matter
KGs are AWESOME!! They fear less and their CREATIVITY Quotient is so HIGH!!
A2. Also, the power narrative - the narrative of what we've discovered, what we dream, and what we've done.
the narrative is one of my favorite aspects of a design challenge- letting students tell their story is powerful
LOL!! I'm just learning from the crowd like everyone else!
A2: diff writing genres (informational, persuasive, narrative...) help w/observation, pitching a prototype and telling THE story
it took me a minute or 2 to realize that you were referring the kindergarteners
Several types of literacy - digital, media, visual, cultural, etc - may be required to understand the problem
Sorry for the delay. I'm also participating in :)
Gee, I'm missing connecting words left and right tonight, of course...I meant the power OF narrative!
A2: Writing, reading and sharing about each other's process promoted empathetic literacy and collaboration and documentation
A2: OK, a stab: literacy means nothing if you do not deeply understand story/narrative... And that is at the heart of discovery.
Q3 During the DT process, do you assess, or how do you assess Ss reading and writing are doing?
it's twitter... I'm proud of myself when I use vowels
And this could mean written literacies, or a more holistic form of literacy where you grasp the meaning of someone's xp...
Sorry I am late...the gym held me up. Happy join from New Orleans
Q3 During the design process, how might we, or should we, assess Ss reading and writing?
Thurs 6:45a CST re: Thoughts about our school wide projects
A3: Use of rubrics that focus on structure; expression; and, to a lesser degree but still necessary, conventions.
A3 maybe depends on context, ex. we don't assess spelling on
Much love peeps! Gotta bail! Dinner time with the fam! Peace.
A3: Depending on the process and project, I assess informally and formally. Formally, by having them write out a plan.
A3: In DT, as part of process I love reflective writing. Tells you so much and allows for assessment.
so many times my DT heart fights my English teacher brain on how much is TOO much, you know?
A3 Definitely assess R/W at different times but it's always formative. No grade attached. Just want to get them feedback
do you assess conventions in journals?
I think reflective writing is some of the easiest to incorporate and can be so telling of what Ss have learned!
A3: Informally by discussing the motivation for the plan-- based on research, prior knowledge, connected learning
A3. Trying to re-think my antiquated notion of assessment, and make it integral to Ss' process. 1/2
maybe peer assessment and self reflections via rubric?
I love having Ss do this, too! Rather than give it to them make them create it!
thrilled to have you no matter when ya land!
YES! Same here. I think we're getting better at focusing the truly important elements of written expression.
A3 what if the assessment/feedback allows for Ss to share (give & take)
Depends what we are focused on. I teach grade 3 so I tend to pick just 1 or 2 things I'm looking for
what might this look like? :)
A3. 2/2 They need to identify if they're on the right track, or if they're BSing themselves. And then ID their own lit needs.
makes sense, since grade 3 is learning basics and you don't want to overwhelm the Ss
Absolutely, Dvora! DT is so S-centered we would be crazy not to ask them to self-monitor & monitor each other
A3 Here's my rubric for our Tiny House, Big Dreams design challenge in Eng 9: https://t.co/n2WPFEfBvB gives a sense
A3. ALSO! I find the DT process so much more amenable to authentic eval bc we have REAL AUDIENCES. Pardon the caps. I'm excited.
A3: we use formative assessments and obs. whilst in the DT process. we could be using the summative rubrics to offer feedback
Q4 just to keep the discussion moving!
thank you for sharing the rubric. I love the language for meets standard
Love the language used w/in rubric; stepping in the shoes of the student! Sweet!
Tab open, waiting for the end of the chat!!
give Ss rubric or feedback tool in advance. Setup time to talk about the writing make it a convo, & Ss voice n grd
A3. 8 years of reading S's design reflections and they're still a highlight of teaching. The quality of writing makes/breaks 'em.
I have even let students host class discussions about the process
I have even let students host class discussions about the process https://t.co/mSmS9lsJ7O https://t.co/I2eciPFaeS
Yes!!! I also sensed this early connection. The Right in your country & mine is trying to dismantle unions..Can't let it happen
Very important! Especially if there are different audiences for writing for a design challenge.
So much good stuff here! So Q4: How might we teach students to examine texts, both fiction and non-fiction, as created by design?
I agree that reflection is a great place to utilize writing as a way for Ss to organize their ideas.
This is GREAT to keep in mind.
. bn in gr8 convo 2nit abt Ss fcs rubric
A4: Book scavenger hunts let them build background knowledge about a text, and understand genre specific features
Can you say a little more about this?
A4: depends on what U R designing. I'd love to hear ideas about F text, NF is easier for me to incorporate with building empathy
agree.it helps generate a form of practice.Caution: don't let the rubric become the expectation/ceiling
A4: Provide Ss a space 2 discuss text, lit., & other forms of expression as a series of choices & a dialog with an audience.
Q4.1) How can we get Ss to examine texts from a designer's perspective....think author as designer!
. I use DT compass to guide/assess S's comm: Observe their audience. Have clear design principles. Have & try more than one idea.
What would literacy in the innovation economy look
A4: Dialectic journals help to gather connections, focus ideas, plan responses and potential projects and collaborate with Ts/Ss
can I steal, I mean use this
A4: Connecting to author chats, community leaders that connect to parts of a story and twitter feedback work too
what is a dialectic journal, and what grade level is it used in?
A4. In teaching ELLs, there's a big emphasis on ID-ing text function. It's good for all, I think: can be genre or purpose related
Anyone else's Tweetdeck acting a fool tonight?
. I believe that Hegel kept dialectic journals throughout his life! ;)
that could lead into Empathy and talks of intention!
Dialectic journals are quick jots of thoughts that someone else reads and responds too. Can be done at grades 1 +
i like this. And with so many choices/ways to get writing out to multiple audiences...this would be so generative
sounds interesting. could it be used on as comments?
Actually, pictorial dialectic journals can be done for Kg and Pk. They respond with pics instead of words
Q5 coming up in less than a minute!
A4b: I recently used Suzy Lee's Wave as a great example of whole book design.
or with Ss who are language delayed because of processing deficits and ADHD
Yes! It could! Very easily. Though, I really like pencil and paper. :)
do you have examples that you could share or a place to get ideas
A4: explore books/texts w/the appropriate lens.looking 4 purpose, connections w/characters, themes across story arcs
I'd be offended if you didn't.
Q5: When so much about writing is usually summative, HMW promote the DT concept of 'process over product' with Ss writing?
Banyai's Zoom is another good example of whole book design; and Moore & Gibbon's Watchmen too
A4. I've tried to make every signif writing this yr have a REAL audience. Looking at anchor texts w/this same eye...gonna do it.
A5: Emphasize the Writers Workshop approach to instruction with mentoring texts & conferences throughout the writing process.
A5 set up the expectations for Ss to create multiple drafts and peer editing
Go Lucy! https://t.co/6a1MgjWZkR
A5: Emphasize the Writers Workshop approach to instruction with mentoring texts & conferences throughout the writing process.
Most definitely here. I have seen it done with AVLS classes.
A5 Create formatives that directly align to summative/final product & give feedback on present level of perf. in relation to
I'm using Zoom but don't think my Elem Ss are ready for Watchmen. We've used We Are In A Book by Willems
. Completely agree. Another way: turn the class into a literary magazine. Write. Edit. Design. Refine. Publish.
the workshop model for both reading and writing do so much to create and cultivate a healthy community of learners
Yes. I've not being doing enough of this last 2 years.
nice! Use of student blogs is a way to facilitate this
Bah. Desensitize them early.
A5 writing and process is like a dirty word with my Students now. I am constantly repeating it is a process 1 more draft.
A5: Also having authors come to our school to discuss their writing process & have Ss discuss with them.
. I learned much more about being a writer by being a freelancer than I ever did in school.
A5 I think you must relate writing to other interests, sports for example shoot more free throws to get better practice practice
hard to relate to do agains when we're young and believe we'll get it right quickly
have you been finding that harder w a youngun in the house?
A5: we love this mantra: "when you think you're done, you've only just begun"
A5: Use DT for all experiments - from writing experiments to science ones. Observations, principles, ideas, experiments, repeat!
acccidently posting a post with errors teaches that another draft is a good idea
A5: Silent discussions that are just because. Author spotlight in class. Create books for a lower grade and share.
. Might be fun to have Ss split into affinity groups (sports, music) & create mini-anthologies on their passions.
A5: Just had Lauren Oliver & Soman Chainani come discuss writing with my Ss. They loved it! https://t.co/K2mIYihkGp
every single time say that to a student, I hear her sweet, haunting voice
Lovely folks: if you're so inclined, I 'd love help w/this dilemma abt how to nurture radical imagination https://t.co/Q7CHcEzIlb
So many awesome ideas tonight! Thanks for coming out for a GREAT everyone!
And this is why I dig ideating w https://t.co/j5tI7BS1tO
. Might be fun to have Ss split into affinity groups (sports, music) & create mini-anthologies on their passions.
YES! Looking into this with some of my favorite authors this year.
A5: Using DT process to study Shakespeare and write crush letters or insults to their bad traits in Shakespearian dialect...
A big huge for modding the first of 2016! !
