I think in legal, more so than other industries, a project manager has to be a really good problem solver. Lawyers are still figuring out what project management is, so the LPM has to deduce and figure out how they can add value, often with no instruction #LPMHQ
In the industry we’re in, if legal service providers are going to have a role for LPM I don’t think the debate is whether they should have their JD or not. The soft skills and management experience matter so much more. #lpmhq
I can’t say certifications make for the *best* PMs, esp in legal, but it shows a dedication to the profession and desire to improve professionally. #lpmhq#projectmanagement#lpm

Having prior exp that manages people directly or juggling many demanding requests (as in the service industry) that requires very strong people skills is most important. #lpmhq

You can call it communication, but really it’s customer service. When I’m hiring, I look at other qualifications first, but an important tiebreaker, once I’m down to similar qualifications: Has this person had a hard customer service job in the past? #LPMHQ

A1: and no one will understand how difficult it is 4 an LPM 2 inject yourself into a partner client relationship to improve the way they do business when egos are at stake and $$$ until they try it. The ability 2 B influential and deferential is a delicate balancing act. #lpmhq
PMI has models for measuring PM maturitity and employee skill and putting cont. improvement programs in place. EDRM has similar for ediscovery. #lpmhq#lpm

It’s the real differentiator. We can build up someone’s legal chops. You can learn a lot of things on the job, but the toughness and battle scars from those previous service jobs get you to that point. #LPMHQ
A1: also somewhat of an extrovert gives you a head start as long as you know how to wield that characteristic. Display confidence always. Don’t be afraid to push back on lawyers and suggest better ways of doing things. Organizational skills r important too. #lpmhq

A2: JD not required for Legal PM but legal exp helps. Legal environment can be hard to adjust to. Paralegals and legal IT can make good PMs if sufficiently assertive. #lpmhq
I don’t believe you need a jd to be a successful pm. I’ve had a team comprised of both and the jd brings value but is not necessary. Having worked in the legal space in which you’re going to apply LPM helps whether it be legal aid, in-house or biglaw. #layofheland#lpmhq

I don't think you need any specific credential or background to be an LPM. To me what's more important is having the right interpersonal skills and business skills to add value. #LPMHQ

I usually ask it during an interview. I’ll usually ask what their first job was and will spend a little time asking if they juggled any other jobs during school. #LPMHQ
Not comfortable requiring extroverts. Big fan of introverts. But do have to be assertive. Assertiveness and introversion not mutually exclusive. #lpmhq#introversion

Lawyers can be so weird. You need that exposure to anticipate the things they will—and will not—care about. Would barista at Starbucks in a building full of law firms be the best primer? #LPMHQ
Q2: I’ve hired some of the best folks 4 my LPM team -nonpracticing, former practicing, never practiced JDs and former bartenders, worked in legal, outside of legal & everything in between. Need to be persuasive, flexible, smart, collaborative, independent humble & fearless #LPMHQ
