A1: a student I had to discipline came back to campus today and greeted me with a smile and a hug...relationship building does make a difference! #pln365
A1: When a student that I've been working closely with made a choice to follow his own decision and not to react to peer pressure from others. It was a proud moment that showed me that persistent positive support pays off. #pln365
A1:Today I had a reluctant ready come find me at the close of day to ask if he could come and read to me privately to gain confidence. I was very welcoming. #pln365
A1: One of the most powerful moment for me was when I asked a student what he thought the adults expected out of him. HIs answer was "To fail" Hit me hard! #pln365
A1) Today was celebrating the success of others! Hearing about @mlarson_nj and Matt reached his goal of being an Admin. I know how hard he worked and how much professional knowledge this educator has! Now many more Ts and Ss will benefit from Matt. 👊#pln365@PaulONeill1972
A1: The day is just beginning for me. The most powerful moment will be when I visit the Killing Fields and a school converted to a prison in Cambodia later today.
#pln365
A1: When a sweet little boy saved my spot next to him at lunch. When grandma came to pick him up, he was so excited to tell her that I sat next to him for lunch (We eat with the Ss in our classroom)! #PLN365
A1: Getting to greet the Ss when they fought the elements to come to school today. When they cheered later that school was cancelled, I got to share my heart and tell them how much I looked forward to seeing them each day. Really made them think about who we are as Ts. #pln365
Hey #pln365. A1) Today's powerful moment of the day came from my own children who enjoyed the great outdoors in negative temperatures. They are learning we don't wait for the nice days to have fun.
A1) One of the educators in my building told her student, we do not tease anyone for being wrong in this class so always participate and give it your best. We support each other. Please show me what you know, because you know more than what you think. Have confidence. #pln365
Q2: In our industry, there are hundreds of decisions made each day. Share an important decision that you made and the impact this decision had on your day. #pln365
A1: Connecting with one of my best friends @TeachMrB. We had a snow day, but that doesn’t keep us from sharing ideas and talking about what’s best for our students. Hey all! I’m new to #pln365.
A1 Designed a prompt so Ss could reflect on their performance this far as job review. Mini lesson for those struggling for 3.5 ¶. They reviewed my performance and we made the ¶ stronger with revisions. "Change good to great. You don't deserve to be just a good teacher. " #pln365
A1) I went to a conference over the weekend where I presented and participated in PD workshops. It was powerful to share with the kids that even as teachers, we still strive to "learn" and "be better", just like they do on a daily basis. #pln365
Today I connected with students about the balance between stress and passion in their day here. They feel unheard. I could not promise that I alone could give them voice but that we could together try to find a way for them to be heard where and by who it would matter. #pln365
A2) It's a snow day but I still took a parent phone call on my cell because their child is important to me. We had a brief and positive conversation about what's best for their child. Can't wait for school on Thursday! #pln365
Q2: In our industry, there are hundreds of decisions made each day. Share an important decision that you made and the impact this decision had on your day. #pln365
A2: The decision not to share some information that isn't my place to share. Head Start made a decision about the future of the program in our building. My aides are employed by HS, me, by the district. It's HS's info. to share with their employees, not mine. #PLN365
I got this from the great and powerful @arielsacks. It does take some set up, but if you structure it right but after the first book we did, it's been smooth sailing ever since. #pln365
Hi #pln365 sorry I’m late! My phone died. 😬 I’m actually ready to edit blog post about today. It was a snow day and I was excited because well... I love snow. then @megan_hacholski posted a Tweet that made me think... and reflect on my love of snow... hoping to post it 2nite!
A2 Introducing the mini lesson, I told the 3 Ss I was going to reveal a secret that will help them every time they have to write. They saw everyone else was left out and felt special, not lacking. #pln365
Today I used a new graphic organizer with my students for them to demonstrate deeper understanding when the were reading Huck Finn. I loved the responses I had from my students. Will keep looking for the new and improved. Thanks to Kelly Galagher for her idea. #pln365
By the way, I forgot to switch from my personal “Byceopatomus” account before we started, so if you followed me on that account please feel free to follow me on this (my teacher) account. #pln365
A1 a colleague came to me today to discuss a lesson that she was planning for her upcoming observation. She wanted to talk through ideas and get some feedback. #pln365
A2) Today I was at the BoE and I decided to leave & go visit a school & spend some time talking to Ts, Ss and Admins. Great to see @jodi_mahoney the @SBSDGB staff and saw how far a student has grown socially! The special moments are in the schools! #pln365@PaulONeill1972
Q2: In our industry, there are hundreds of decisions made each day. Share an important decision that you made and the impact this decision had on your day. #pln365
Love it. Let’s give them a place where they feel comfortable to articulate their feelings and thoughts. If we don’t have the answer, showing them we’ll work together is often more powerful #pln365
A2: To find the time to "extend" a difficult conversation today when I felt like my day was already packed to the gills. This led to knowledge that I gained about a student that will help me better understand his perception. #pln365
Q3: When reflecting, we often think about "the one that got away." If you could have one moment or decision back to revise, which moment/decision would that be and why? #pln365
A2: it’s hard working in discipline all day, every day, but giving a kid a “second” chance to prove themselves never gets old. I teach them they have to earn that they are trustworthy #pln365
A2: I don’t make many official decisions on a daily basis these days, but I try to lead by example and hope I make a difference. It’s all about rapport and relationships. The rest doesnt matter without those. #pln365
A2: It was a snow day so not too many big decisions. Put work away and did play and go outside though! It was sooooooo nice. And it wasn’t so deep so I could crutch through it!!! Glad I did. Tomorrow is going to be a diff story. #pln365
A3: I would pre-plan a bit more of my exemplars. I love modeling in front of Ss but sometimes it's good to have some of the writing planned out first. #pln365
A2: Recently, a usually motivated S has been distant/reluctant. Instead of giving them a hard time about it, I chose to ask them to stand by the door w. me @ the start of class while I greeted the others. I checked in, we caught up,& it was a much better day #pln365
I once had a student who was bounced around from foster home to foster home. We built a great rapport before he was moved to another foster home out of district. I wish I would have provided him a way to connect with me (work email). #pln365
A3) Do I have to choose one? I think of all that I have learned in my career and think of the students who could have experienced more success with what I know now. #pln365
Q3: When reflecting, we often think about "the one that got away." If you could have one moment or decision back to revise, which moment/decision would that be and why? #pln365
A3) Great Q! I should have said Thank You to some colleagues I saw today. Soemtimes we are always head down laptop up... stop and say thank you to as many colleagues as you can! Everyone is appreciated and they need to hear it! #pln365@PaulONeill1972
Q3: When reflecting, we often think about "the one that got away." If you could have one moment or decision back to revise, which moment/decision would that be and why? #pln365
A3: I know I probably make mistakes daily, but I really try to make complete and informed decisions when dealing with students because we are dealing with human beings. That’s a tough one. #pln365
Usually my regrets are about inaction. Today, I regret letting a student stay silent or at least not checking in privately to see if there was something she wanted to ask but didn't. I'm big on student "choice" but maybe I allow them to choose mediocrity too much? #pln365
A3: Wow, I reflect on this question regularly. As someone who experienced a lot of transition over the last two years, I reflect on this often. I always look for the learning experience and seek the valuable connections along the way. #pln365
A3 I would have asked to switch to English years ago. I really enjoy the vocabulary building, grammar, and literature. Helping Ss understand inferences and truly appreciate the message conveyed is the best. #pln365
A3: today I had a troubled student shut down, put his book on the floor and then put his head down. I left him alone and I wish I had gone over to him to try to have him open up to me why he stopped. Regret my choice. Missed an opportunity. #pln365
Q4: As lifelong learners we are always looking for lessons learned. Share a lesson learned or a powerful reminder that you took away from TODAY. #pln365
A3: with regards to teaching, I always reflect too. If I failed: how do I/we approach this differently? How do I connect with THAT kid? Maybe it’s simply making them smile. Maybe its mastering a standard. Most importantly, do they know we care? #preachingtothechoir#pln365
We had a PCAST training yesterday stressing how positives can change the direction of a meeting. But #pln365 already knows all about that. It's just taking time to be mindful of those around us.
Today I re-learned that I'm a better person when I keep it light, not look for the snarky reply, and let casual convo stay casual and not work related. Too bad I have amnesia so often! #pln365
A4: Don't get too high when things go your way or too low when things do not. Focus on "right actions" and what you can control and you will have more peace in your life! #pln365
A4: Kids are still kids. They will make decisions that let us down or fall short of expectations. Struggling with our oldest at being responsible, but she is not getting the support she needs from a teacher at school. Caught in a tough spot without many options. #pln365
Q4: As lifelong learners we are always looking for lessons learned. Share a lesson learned or a powerful reminder that you took away from TODAY. #pln365
A2 I had to leave early, as I left I drew a blank snowman on the board. I told the class that the sub would add details to the snowman when they followed star behavior and I couldn’t wait to come in tomorrow and see a beautiful snowman. Not worried about the sub note #pln365
A4) Sadly, so many parents equate success to passing grades. As an SE teacher and aspiring admin, I believe there are successes our students experience that cannot be measured in a letter grade. Conveying that message to parents is a challenge. #pln365
Q4: As lifelong learners we are always looking for lessons learned. Share a lesson learned or a powerful reminder that you took away from TODAY. #pln365
A4: I really wish that I had not let that moment go by when I could have tried to reach out and let him know I was there for him. Kicking myself. #pln365
A4: I was on a field trip today. Three students messaged me to ask questions about work or tell me what they accomplished. Grateful for their ownership and responsibility. #proud#pln365
A4: Don’t take the behavior of your students’ personally. A whole lot of life happened before we showed up. Always make an effort to show compassion, understanding, empathy and kindness. A little bit goes a long way #pln365
A4: Favorite lesson from today is that resilience and staying positive pays off. I thank and congratulate @mlarson_nj for sharing his journey with us. Good luck Matt, you will be a great Principal. #pln365
A4) Powerful reminder in seeing a student grow socially. A few years ago, this S would not sit with others at the Cafe table for an extended period of time. Reminder - all students and adults will progress when they are ready and at their own pace. #pln365@PaulONeill1972
Q4: As lifelong learners we are always looking for lessons learned. Share a lesson learned or a powerful reminder that you took away from TODAY. #pln365
A4: Lessons that I learned is that I need to realize that everyone is not truly passionate about our craft as the educators in this chat and you can't make them be! #pln365
One of my favorite sayings is "discipline is not something you do TO someone, it's something you provide FOR someone." It's all about providing open ended opportunities for growth not just closed ended consequences. #pln365
A4 I am currently mentoring a student teacher and we keep discussing the need to know our why. Why are we having kids do x? Why is this content/skill important? Know your why and the rest seems to fall into place. #pln365
Had a personal moment as well this week with my youngest but a great learning opportunity provided itself through a frustrating sequence of events. #pln365
I just finishing facilitating a Twitter chat for #educators about the #futureofschool. Deeply touched and reminded about the critical importance of the experiences of teachers in schools everyday-- and listening to their successes, struggles and stories. WOW! #pln365
Fair point. Passion isn't something you can teach but I remain hopeful that our passion can be contagious and that it will ultimately spread in a way that moves others to find what they're passionate about. #pln365
Paul I completely agree. I think you exhibit your passion and never assume it will be contagious, but hope that it does! Your passion is contagious and inspiring Kepp doing what you do! #pln365
Those are tough moments. I've been there and I've tried to be better the next time around. They're hard moments to swallow when we know we could have done more. #pln365
