Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Carmen from McPherson! Just got home from a DREAMING session with parents! We were asking them what would a redesigned school look like to them? SO interesting! #ksedchat#ecet2ks
I will take a picture of the posters tomorrow and send them to you! Lots of MORE RECESS, LONGER LUNCHES, CONNECTIONS, and Social Emotional Focus. #ksedchat
Had the opportunity to tour your district a few weeks ago! So impressed with so many things! Loved learning about WE THE PEOPLE and was pretty amazed by the graphic design/print shop! #ksedchat
A1: I try to make it problem solving and experimentation. I don't want to give my kids all the steps to using something new, they need to think critically about how to do new things. #ksedchat
A1: I focus on soft skills (problem solving, taking turns, collaboration, goal setting, etc) and digital citizenship in library. I think these are important to future employers. #ksedchat
A1 They are confident knowing that they have skills and the ability to use needed tool to figure out & solve problems. In SS that means they are ready to be an active citizen. #ksedchat
A1: a 21st C learner embraces tech to answer any question and find answers for those that have none. At 2nd they are proactive and flexible in how they think. #ksedchat
A1: In middle school I love to see kids who are independent and solve problems on their own without coming to me. I love it when a student has a tech problem or something they want to try and they Google or YouTube the solution. Those are real-life skills! #ksedchat
a1
Ss have top flight active listening skills.
Can effectively speak and write to communicate ideas.
Can effectively collaborate with a variety of people. #ksedchat
A1 What I try to develop in my Ss is problem solver, critical thinker, communicator, globally aware, caring, collaborator, learner, self-manager, emotionally stable and leader. #ksedchat
A1: 4th Grade Here-I would love for Ss to be able to be problem solvers. For example: "My pencil is broken." student sits "Miss Z my pencil is broken." My response "PROBLEM SOLVE" student sits. If we can't problem solve a broken pencil what is going to happen.... #ksedchat
A1) At the HS level a student w/ well developed 21st centuries skills is engaged, informed, and prepared to take the next step in their journey after high school. They seek continual growth and improvement! #ksedchat
A1 It's tough getting Ss to develop 21st century skills! They need to be curious, okay w not getting answers right away from Ts, be able to look at the tools around them & figure out what is best way to solve their problems #ksedchat
Ss who have confidence in owning their learning. Ss that embrace choice and are willing to be creative in sharing what they know! Ss that are bold in making connections and aren’t afraid to ask tough questions. Critical thinking collaborators! #ksedchat
My students have gotten better with no right answer and being wrong at first, but they all still want to just be "done" so we're working on that #ksedchat
A1-Manners, reading skills, number sense, problem solving. I don’t think the basic skill set has changed we’ve just added more to the mix. Tech being a BIG one. #ksedchat
A1: I want my "littles" to be able to communicate, to be caring, to be able to share ideas and understand other's point of view, be emotionally stable and to be a leader leader. #ksedchat
That's good to hear! My Ss get so frustrated when they come up to me w a question and I ask them what other ways they've tried to solve their problems before talking to me. Or, even worse, I respond to their question with even more questions! #ksedchat
The ability to be a critical consumer of information is one of the most valuable skills that we can give to students. Not only for the students, but for society as a whole. #ksedchat

A1: I think critical thinking skills are an important skill for Ss to learn. They need to be taught how to inquire and how to search for knowledge, especially with the abundance of resources available to their generation. #ksedchat
So true or at least aware to not make the possible bad decisions we may make a digital record. So glad not all of my life is not digitally cataloged #ksedchat
This is commonplace in my room to. One of the first strategies I tell any adult that walks in to help. SS have got to think beyond me and they have to be able to handle those ?s #ksedchat
A1 Willing to make mistakes, reflect, and learn from them. Adapt to change and accept that even when things aren’t ideal, life goes on and that builds strength and maturity. #ksedchat
A2: one thread I've seen here is making sure to filter information. I think that search engines and YouTube are great resources, especially when they require students to be skeptical about what they are seeing. #ksedchat
A2. Opportunities, opportunities, opportunities! You have to give them space to grow, explore, and experience these skills. Any moment is a chance if you tack a question to it. #ksedchat
I always told students that there is a war for their minds by being waged by various groups that want to be able to use them for their purposes. Don't be someone else's useful idiot! THINK! #ksedchat

A2: More S choice in showing what they know, such as accepting more than one way to come up with an answer, as long as the answer is correct and they can show us how they solved it. PBL. #ksedchat
A2: Teachers need to provide steps, techniques and methods to solve problems & promote inquiry in their subjects. Then add in the tech + authentic problems to solve. #ksedchat
A2
Utilizing Google suite for collaborative assignment opportunities. Having ss work together to create and communicate through shared docs slides etc. Having clear and consistant expectations for discussion. #ksedchat
A2 Can I say teachers in general? We need to be modeling those skills for Ss to see. Model mistakes, model resilience, model clear communication, model working with colleagues, model appropriate reactions to frustrating situations. #ksedchat
A2. We need to provide opportunities for student voice and leadership to build those skills. We also need to be good models of those skills as well. #ksedchat
A2) I think we can get too caught up in gadgets and technology in the search for answers. The most important skill we can foster in students is the ability to be a truly critical thinker. This involves modeling, practice, discussions, and uncomfortable conversations. #ksedchat
A2-Teaching Ss that it’s ok to fail as long as they are learning & growing. Trying something new, answering a ? wrong, listening to peer ideas, helping others. Compassion 💕 #ksedchat
A2: I think something like Genius Hour, to allow students to learn and explore something THEY are interested in, and creating a self-initiated learning experience, is a valuable resource. Teach them how to research. #ksedchat
Connections beyond classroom walls. We have made global connections through Skype and I have brought in several local people. Learning how to shake hands, ask questions, use eye contact, etc. And they beg to be the “tour guide” bringing our guest to the room. #ksedchat
A2 More opportunities for creativity. Giving students an open-ended prompt, or better yet problems that need solutions with less on the rubric to just see what they come up with. They always surprise us. #ksedchat
A2: I like to give my students clear expectations. When they're collaborating we go through what I should SEE and HEAR while I'm walking around. This sets them up for success because they know what to do. #ksedchat
Lol yay! I’m mostly just trying to remind myself to model. I’m not very good at it! But how can I expect Ss to develop these skills if they aren’t seeing them from me? #ksedchat
A2) I think one resource we can all give at no cost is time for reflection. If the goal is learning, we do it upon reflecting on success AND MISTAKES (so sayeth the high priest of education - John Dewey). Honor mistakes. Do not punish them. #ksedchat
This is the wonderful thing about PLNs. We can trade ideas and help each other stay accountable! I love having other educators to communicate with. #ksedchat
I try to listen to my own sermons everyday. i feel you. One of the reasons why I started to do #observeme so that I can make sure I stick to my goals #ksedchat
A3: EACH OTHER! We shouldn't always have to reinvent the wheel. Beg, Borrow, Steal, and modify what others are doing to fit your classroom. We are the best resource for each other :) #ksedchat
A3: So many of my resources come from my online friends & Ts I come in contact with. They have opened my eyes to #GAFE#flipgrid outside speakers #HyperDocs plus better content. #ksedchat
A3: I use netsmartz and Google Interland for Digital Citizenship. We have a STEAM lab and teacher use it for problem solving and collaboration skills. #ksedchat
A3: I know I need more PD on google classroom! I also need to continue to find more lessons that help my kids learn perseverance. It’s so needed, and I’m too quick to help. My New Year’s Resolution is to be less helpful. I just need to modify my lessons to apply that! #ksedchat
A3. Explicitly teach skills you want ss to have. My building voted on five critical social skills we want all ss to have from this list from @BoysTown#ksedchat
A3) I think having good people to lean on is the most valuable resource we have as educators. I have been fortunate to meet some wonderful people in this profession and I lean on them constantly for support, ideas, and an honest sounding board. #ksedchat
I just started this week. Here is my sign. I have a form for adults and one for my Ss. My Ss results were real telling. Only had 2 adults and it was helpful too. Want links to the survey? #ksedchat
One of the best things I’ve ever heard about teaching. Find your strong and steadies and lean on them. Find your supports and invest in those. #ksedchat
A3) I think having good people to lean on is the most valuable resource we have as educators. I have been fortunate to meet some wonderful people in this profession and I lean on them constantly for support, ideas, and an honest sounding board. #ksedchat
A well run PLN can make a big difference. In my own, we’ve covered a lot of ground this year. We’re pushing to re-examine what top notch instruction looks like, and then reflect on whether that’s us or not. How do we change as needed? Etc. #ksedchat
A3 I don't know what I'd do without my PLN here on Twitter! I also have discovered webinars, and am so inspired from the ideas I can get while I'm cooking dinner, grading, etc. #ksedchat
Think outside your classroom walls... I‘ve had great success finding professionals willing to invest time in kiddos... architects, designers, pro golf managers, bankers, higher ed teachers. Don’t be afraid to ask, the worst they can say is no! Skype is another option. #ksedchat
A4: We as teachers need to have a wide and deep PLN. That is how we grow and change. I want to model to my Ss that learning does not stop when you leave the classroom. #ksedchat
Yep! I use 3 Before Me--still difficult for some students to use tools besides me, but it is slowly teaching Ss to be in charge of their learning! #ksedchat
So true the power of real people. I used to be in other professions before teaching. Many get time off to to come talk. I also remind people that no one really wants to go to work LOL #ksedchat
A4) A 21st century teacher is engaged in constant reflection and seeks their own growth and development. 21st century teachers are responsible for and take ownership of their professional growth! #ksedchat
A4: 21st century teachers need to be willing and wanting to constantly update. Knowing relevancy will always change means looking for better practices, being flexible and knowing that it's OK to not be perfect. #ksedchat
A4: Facilitate active and engaged learning, don’t teach to a test or lecture for an hour with stationary students. Be the conductor of the symphony instead of soloist putting on a show. #ksedchat
A4: Uh, Oh. Now u r asking me to check myself. That is so hard. I think the biggest thing is a person who learns, unlearns and relearns. That is the hardest but greatest skill of the 21st century. #ksedchat
A4 I think more than ever ts need to give ss the opportunities to collaborate to create and solve problems. Show what they've learned in a variety of ways. I think that tech has stunted these skills. #ksedchat
A4: Good Teachers in the 21st century have the same characteristics.
1. Willingness to change and take risks (adding technology!)
2. Engaging classrooms
3. Builds Relationships w/ kids
#ksedchat
Less talking from the T, more student centered conversations. Ts intentionally plan for meaningful work and reflection. Ts work as a team in their building and in their communities. Ts have to be flexible and willing to let go of some control. #ksedchat
A5: I think we are getting there. We are one of the Gemini Redesign schools and we are looking at some innovative new ways to "do" school. Project-based, trauma sensitive, individualized learning. #ksedchat
A5 Moving in the right direction. Sometimes feel like we are going 25 mph as the world moves at light speed but the key is having a staff pushing for the things that will help kids to be successful in their futures. #ksedchat
A5) I don’t think this is an explicit component of my district’s vision. I am so AMAZED at the organic growth in my building by teachers to pursue this ideal. Many have shifted serious focus to project based learning. The future is very bright in Tonganoxie. #ksedchat
A5: We are making some moves but unfortunately OK is having huge budget issues. U guys may be aware since U get a lot of our Ts. Many have gone 1 to 1 as well as more collaborative spaces. However, it is too few given it is 2018 #ksedchat
Thank u #ksedchat for welcoming an OKIE into your chat. I am so glad @Willmdunn invited me out. Hope you don’t mind if I join you next week in between dinner with friends
