Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS. Won't be able to stay for entire chat. Will have to get kids to bed once son gets home from swim practice. #sstlap
#sstlap crew not sure I will make it tonight I have a sick kiddo. Qs are scheduled. My apologies for my absence. Qs are at https://t.co/nVDsOqI5Pi if you need them as well.
A1: anything that can trigger an emotion - introducing patricians and plebeians; making Ss think they are creating a mosaic and have 1 student (patrician) not participate in the group or help out. #sstlap
A1: A role playing introduction. I asked one of my students to do a skit with me for the class on the signing of our local treaty and they enjoyed it. #sstlap
A2: I love the opinion spectrum. A statement is displayed. For example: “The Industrial Revolution was a positive era.”
Then students move to one side if they agree and the other if they disagree. The further they move to one side, the stronger they feel. Then discuss! #sstlap
A2 #sstlap Tie the movement to the content - learn about Selma while you march, interpretive dance and the Korean War, strolling through the big cities of the Gilded Age, plots pf land for the Dawes Act
A2: station rotations, scavenger hunts, or “field trips” - before getting into the American Revolution topics, we met outside by the “liberty tree” #sstlap
A2 One of the easiest things to do it to have Ss simply stand up when they are done with a task. Take it one step further by having them rotate over a few seats when they sit back down. #sstlap

A3: Pose it as a casual question about their day that is seemingly unrelated. For example, what did you eat for dinner? How did you sleep? How many outfit choices did you have? Share answers! Now let’s discuss how a soldier at Valley Forge would answer these questions. #sstlap
I pass out cards every couple of weeks and students write their names on one side and passion on the other. It helps me to make connections between passion and content #sstlap
A2: station rotations, scavenger hunts, or “field trips” - before getting into the American Revolution topics, we met outside by the “liberty tree” #sstlap
A3 one of the first days of school I had Ss make a a Google slide with 3 fictional characters that represented them. Nothing to do with Social Studies, but very revealing. #sstlap
A3 - It's easier said than done sometimes (I'm looking at you, World History) but we must make room in our curricula for students to explore their passions, interests & hobbies in an academic light & help them find the bridges between them and the content/skills we teach. #sstlap
A4: Classes always seem to want to be your “favorite” class. Harness that power and use it! I often tell period 3 that period 1 was able to name 26 inventions that emerged after the Industrial Revolution. Can you top that? Better yet, I can think of 30. Beat me! #sstlap
A4 #sstlap add the word "CHALLENGE" and throw down some points - have teams move mid game based on score - use a timer - put a @Jolly_Rancher on the line - excitement and controlled chaos ensue
A4 Electoral College we usually have 2 teachers as candidates, did team quizzes one year, student grades added to team score, Ss had team names, played other tables, etc #sstlap
Impressive! This totally works. We were singing a Tour the States for a couple weeks, and I held a "competition" between the classes every day. They really feed off "beating" the other classes. #sstlap
A4: I also like doing things like creating a competition for a presentation (who should be on the Cdn $20 bill...advocate for your choice; "who was the most effective dictator" and then the Ss vote #sstlap
A4- I get that there is such a thing as friendly/healthy competition, but I endeavor more to cultivate a "we're all in this together" collaborative climate than one in which they feel judged against one another. #sstlap
A2
I've used gallery walks way more often this year. Have ss display an idea, question on their iPad, everyone can walk around and find something they think is interesting, they agree with or disagree with and discuss. #sstlap
Yes! Gallery walks are a very simple way to incorporate movement... Need to incorporate these in class more often! Movement gets the blood pumping and brains working! #sstlap
A4 when learning world maps, play "king of the hill" winner stays loser to the back of the line. Project countries and haves kids name it. Team geoguessr high score wins a prize. Vocab pictionary. #sstlap
#sstlap march through the school, using placards and QR codes to tell the story and impact, watch videos on the march - tried Aris by @FieldDayLab but struggled with accuracy of GPS - very cool possibilities!
A5 Oral history/Finding interviews. Last year students interviewed 4 veterans. They wrote the script and we used digital recorders. I loved listening to them. They laughed together and got to share personal moments. #sstlap
A5: I haven’t done this in a long time, but during student teaching I would write the last name of someone or something we were studying in wet erase marker on a coffee mug. #sstlap
A5: Give just enough to let curiosities run wild. For Jamestown, I pose it as an unsolved murder mystery. They come up with craziest, coolest theories about what happened. Then, they’re clamoring to find out what actually happened! #sstlap

A5: mystery #googlehangouts are fun! Post pic of mystery city, and hangout with a class from that city. Must identify city using major landmarks/landforms. #sstlap
A5 This scenario just played out in real life, but it was a species of antelope in central Asia, not humans, who were the victims. https://t.co/w9Y4EOA6a0#sstlap
Incorporate narrative elements or have ss identify the narrative elements of a crucial event or period.
Also Setting characters, rising action, climax , resolution etc #sstlap
A6: The power of prediction is immeasurable! After discussing an event ask them to predict what happens next! Create your own story based on what you know! When you study what truly happened they have a framework to view it through. How different is it from your version? #sstlap

It’s time to start.
A5 Write this question on the Board, "Which is worth more, a pile of pennies equal to your weight; or a stack of quarters equal to your height? Prove it." #sstlap
A6: I let Ss tell their own stories. When I give them starters at the beg of class, sometimes they're connected to the lesson, sometimes they aren't. But this gets the Ss talking. I noticed Ss are getting better w telling their stories w noticable beg, middle, & ends #sstlap

This free history search engine (https://t.co/aPcF0AYi4j ) emphasizes high-quality sources, such as primary source, academic & institutional websites. This shows typical top results compared to those of Google. Great tool for educators & students! #sstlap#sschat
A7
I try to allow ss to choose how they will present what they've learned during a project, I mostly get slide shows, an essay, but sometimes an imovie, speech, craft, or skit. #sstlap
My kids are extroverted, so I am blessed in the sense that they bring me their interests and show me videos about them- but asking for suggestions on music or movies helps you get a general profile of their interests. #sstlap
A7: Cater your lessons to students interests! Lots of musicians in your class? Analyze a song about moving out west. Kids who love to doodle? Dive into some political cartoons! Actors abound? Write historical skits! Read your audience; tap into their cultural interests! #Sstlap
A6 - Develop students' storytelling by letting them tell what they know best: themselves. Encourage them to develop the histories of their lives: family, schooling, hobbies & interests. Then develop next-step lesson of history being shaped by it's authors & perspectives. #sstlap

When I taught SS, I rewrote the textbook into plays, cast the characters, they researched the historical figure, and then we performed it for the school. #sstlap
A7: I love having Ss create with Legos. Ss used legos to show the principle of popular sovereignty (pics). Something I want to try I have Ss create a playlist of music for a historical figure or event. #sstlap
