#LFOntChat Archive
This new slowchat will run over the course of a week with a single question being released each Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 pm EDT (with all three questions being related during a given week). This chat will focus on an exploration of Learning Forward's Standards for Professional Learning and we will discuss practical applications of those standards in our school districts. Learning Forward Ontario will host these slowchats, as an affiliate of Learning Forward. We are committed to proving student learning by providing leadership and support for those responsible for professional development.

I have found so many resources through my PLN I don't know where to start.
I think my connections are top on that list. Talking every a.m. has made us a close knit community.
Sounds interesting. Any particular type of edu resources?
I am grateful for the Pirate books, and books.
The sky's the limit! This is just an opener for tonight.
Hi I seem to be having trouble accessing
Glad you're here now! Favorite PL resource?
Hello ! I'm Shauna in Toronto and happy to be joining the chat for the first time! I just wrote a book for Ts!

Great! Don't forget the hashtag. Thanks!
Hi Christina from MD. So many ... and to name a few
Our question for today is coming right up! It’s a slow chat! ;)
A1 Happy Sunday. Resources I have found useful r "knowledgeable others" - skilled colleagues who help us move learning forward.
Hi Dave! Hope you can stay with us for a bit!
Hi Beate! Love the 'people' resources!
Q1: What resources are/might be necessary to support professional learning and how can they enhance PL experiences?
Hello everyone, glad to be able to make it tonight. The resource of time to reflect is so important in prof. learning.
I love that your ideas keep leading to more great ideas. We aren't alone in r efforts:)
A1: As professionals, teachers should model life long learning. Read, research, take risks, try new things, experiment, share!
Hi Dawne! Glad you are with us! Reflection...that sometimes 'elusive' but critical element!
Hi Dawne! Glad you are with us! Reflection...that sometimes 'elusive' but critical element!
Platforms, not pipelines. Networks of people over just resources.Building a PLN critical for students too.
Hi Donna! Really like the connection you made between Ss and PLNs!
& Much multitasking on a Sunday night!
A1) Hello, Zelia here from Toronto, I teach Grade 6. Twitter is my 'on-the-go' PLN and valuable resource!
So I guess people may well be some of our very best resources! :)
Hello . Didn't introduce myself before I started tweeting. I'm Elisa, 5th grade T at an international school in Quito, Ecuador.
We need to help our kids build a network of people who can support them in their inquiries f2f & online
A1: Time, tech, an open mind and a network of supporters to share, cheerlead and give feedback.
Welcome Zelia! Twitter is a great 'friend' among PLN friends! :)
Jena Ball Creator of CritterKin and THe NOt PErfect Hat Club tweeting in from North Carolina. Sorry to be late. What is Q1?
You're handling it all very well! ;)
So glad you could join us from Ecuador, Elisa!
AGree! Time we stopped expecting ourselves to have all the answers & become co-learners.
Yes! I have been using google hangouts 2 invite other Ts 2 share with my Ss & they love it! https://t.co/DXCxmIjnEX
A1: Time, tech, an open mind and a network of supporters to share, cheerlead and give feedback.
A1 a learning protocol can be a gr8 resource to move inquiry conversations forward
Hello from the GTA:) A1: necessary resources are what ever is needed in the right form/time/space for learning
RT Q1: What resources are/might be necessary to support professional learning and how can they enhance PL experiences?
Opportunities for continuous job-embedded learning that formatively influences teaching and learning https://t.co/71mIIgbrDH
Q1: What resources are/might be necessary to support professional learning and how can they enhance PL experiences?
Welcome Jena! Just RTd Q1...our one and only Q tonight!..slow chat.
And I like to frame some inquiry conversations using the creative process as well
A1: I am big believer in extended learning communities and immersion. Don't lecture Ts, inform & model then give practice DOing.
Got me to try appear.in which has been great for connecting our Ss.
Thanks. I finally figured it out :-)
It's a great tool...our Learning Forward Ontario board uses it for our meetings! ;)
Creativity=great way to enlist the brain's neuroplasticity. Our brains are constantly changing based on input
Welcome Jilian! All about timing and need! Right on!
Welcome Jilian! All about timing and need! Right on!
Continuity is essential but sometimes difficult to maintain...would you agree?
And add some coaching when necessary.
Catherine, London, principal, fav PL resource -Ontario Leadership Framework & anything written by
I ask a question, share resources, learn abt others insights, challenges & strategies openly https://t.co/EpS8OZGgLz
Allie from Sydney, Australia here, educational coach... I agree wholeheartedly. Twitter- so vital - up-to-date, ongoing resource
The best learning is always in the DOING...with other in our LCs! Right on!
Agreed- thinking about Creativity and assessment is taking up a lot of my head space recently.
A1:Twitter has proven to be quite a valuable PL resource. Not sure how I would thrive w/o it.
Yes, ran out of characters. ALL need constructive feedback 2 grow as long as not threatening & supportive.
The students are a great resource, figuring out how they think and make connections gives great insight to Ts.
I always desire time between new learning & "jumping back in" to determine/discuss how I'll implement, change...
A1) valuable resource: TEACHERS! my co-teaching partner is my soundboard, my backup, leader, mentor & guide
Dennis is a great, supportive educator and author! Absolutely agree!
imo drives this then accessing platforms through & various blogs chat groups hangouts etc
IMHO that's where all need 2 focus. Stop expecting all 2 learn same things same way. Need creative solutions
Me too:). I call it the "de-frag" process, to clean up and organize the "files" in my brain.
Can you share what you are discovering and how it might support PL?
Welcome, Elisa! I am interested to hear your experiences.
Entire system based on competition & fear right now-MUST stop. Each person has unique contribution 2 make.
Hi Gena! Twitter ROCKS as a PL tool! The incredible PLN that comes along with it isn't bad either! :)
Been doing deep dive into creativity & brain function AND creativity in the workplace.
A1) another valuable online resource 4 Ss/Ts collaboration, ongoing assessment of learning &managemnt of tasks:
Hello Karen! Time to digest, reflect and deepen the learning, eh?
A1) another valuable online resource 4 Ss/Ts collaboration, ongoing assessment as learning &managemnt of tasks:
Can't think of the better professional learning resource! Always stretches my thinking and learning!
posed question "can we assess creativity?".. it's a really big think for me
Welcome aboard, Olwen! Truly the connected learner! :)
One size does not fit all!
thanks just dropping in before going to school - Last week before break 4 us
I like to use many of the ministry of Ed resources to get me started.
Depends on how define assess. Current assessment models are antiquated IMHO
Reading about Anton Ehrenzweig ideas and "the maze" of a creative search. Cool stuff.
My Ss are a great resource. Tap into their knowledge to build upon my units and lessons.
I really like your mention of ongoing assessment of S learning and how that can deepen a T's professional learning!
Yes & forcing 1 size hurts us all. Need all the outside box thinkers & collaborators can get
Great question. Is proof in how we see Ss' minds unfolding & growing?
Absolutely-put student's learning in centre of thinking and planning. Good point
Great Q! Perhaps professional learning is embedded in discovering answers!
Best wishes for a great week ahead! Thanks for dropping in!
learning of & as is ongoing:"for" should never be the end of Ss learning in any task allows 4 this
Any particular favs you can share links to for out out-of-Ontario peeps?
Some ideas: Time for coaching/mentoring, lesson studying amongst peers (perhaps through video), examining student work
Yes and need "in the box" innovation bcs system change is slow. Need coherence among all
Welcome Elina! I think I may have forgotten to extend words of welcome to you earlier! :)
Spending time analyzing actual student work/thinking can be so enlightening for our practice!
Don't know what U mean Innovation encouraged & supported in a proactive system can be terrific
We offer TWO Qs per week about a given Standard for Professional Learning. This week’s Q posts...today and Thurs at 7pm EDT.
i@ChrisQuinn64 Thank you! So glad to finally be free to fully engage in ! :)
For today...Q1: What resources are/might be necessary to support professional learning and how can they enhance PL experiences?
and is PL embedded in questions. Doquality of questions reveal learning?
4 me, effective innovation isn't necessarily radical or disruptive. It builds on and/or reworks current ideas models & approaches
Resource needs are contextual & will vary.Time, people, learning designs, assessments, networks all count.
I believe we can learn a lot through the creation of quality Qs.
Yes! Put Ss at centre of all PL. 'etre
Doesn't require the learner to start from scratch, necessarily. I agree.
Agree! Good questions focus and frame how and what will study.
Great point...links to some of what mentioned...no one size fits all!
exactly. I don't think so. Maybe discuss the creative process. But how do put a value on it? Still thinking.
AGree. Often it involves reframing or rethinking from new point of view. Basis of design thinking.
Educators need to be learners 1st. That may start w/ their own passions b4 it is all about student needs https://t.co/XmhaYa3HQr
IMHO that's where all need 2 focus. Stop expecting all 2 learn same things same way. Need creative solutions
Thank you..great for us to add to our collections!
Great point, their interest and knowledge gears the resources needed and makes the learning rich
I think we all must see ourselves as Ss & Ts. This is how we continue to grow & how we empower Ss 2 take on their own edu
thanks for sharing the site. Looks good.
Jo, her work and her resources are among the best!
me too. So documentation of questions to open curiosity in conversation/observation/product is key for assessment
has made its mark to be a valuable resource and great where ongoing learning takes place
It certainly helps in developing a network of like-minded people with whom to exchange ideas.
Agree, Creativity of S's lets them extend learning
I am ! Love Carol Dweck's work :-)
Like-minded in terms of passion for learning and challenging thinking! Agreed!
Thanks everybody! Off to another Twitter chat - Till next time!
signing off until another day. Thx for the conversation@ChrisQuinn64
True, so much to learn and grow with and keep challenging how we learn
Thank you for joining us!
Gives us more to reflect on as we stretch our thinking
A1) 2 books currently reading/reflecting on my teaching 2 reenforce & change
Fear inhibits creativity- fear of what? Admin? Parents? Change? How can you help address this barrier?
Keep going my friends! I have to check out for now...haven't seen my family all day. I'll check in again tomorrow.
Here's our Q1: What resources are/might be necessary to support professional learning and how can they enhance PL experiences?
In USA fear of failure & imperfection, inability 2 compete & prove worth instilled young. Deeply disturbing
A common vision for everyone to work towards helps us all to pull in the same direction, better for all.
If common vision=find & foster unique abilities of each T & S then agree. Too often 1 size fits all model.
That sounds like a great place to start - what resources do you have that helps?
In USA we claim 2 value individuality, but in reality edu system=manufacturing model w/quality test at end.
Thanks, Zelia! Glad you are enjoying and I love Pernille's work, too!!
Yes,a common vision cannot be prescriptive, more of an over-arching view of where we are going together.
NO! In fact it is getting worse. We have an epidemic of children who believe they are bad becuz not perfect
My work focuses on story-driven multimedia programs 2 teach social-emotional as well as core literacies
we need to focus on the process - that creates risk takers
That sounds interesting - do you create the programs yourself?
Agree. Life=ongoing process of trial & error. Kids need 2 know that & learn 2 luv the process
we have implemented growth mindset in my classroom. Results outstanding. I teach FDK.
this site looks great. It's been bookmarked. Thxs for sharing!
Honored! : Dennis is a great, supportive educator and author! Absolutely agree!
TY, : Catherine, London, principal, fav PL resource -Ont Leadership Framework & anything written by
Lots of great math sites: nrich, Don Steward Median Blog, , ,+more
I agree, growth mindset is powerful & transformative. Also Deanne Burney's Craft Knowledge
Yes! And that is what I value as a PL resource
PL needs to be relevant in order to be useful. The ideas brought up need to be revisited to be effective. https://t.co/G1ibhb4olR
currently looking at their Standards for Professional Learning. Interesting chat & materials: https://t.co/vGJgPqxRiS
