A1: To me, engagement means that the participants are actively involved in what is happening in the moment. #ETCoaches

  • stonemamma Sep 25 @ 1:09 PM EDT
#ETCoaches A1 Borrowing;) from Liz Kolb, I think engagement goes beyond topic focus to active and social learning. Learning is the key.
    In reply to @WickedEdTech
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:09 PM EDT
A1: I can tell people are engaged in learning when they are active- either talking about their learning with partners, creating something, responding to a prompt.. but making sure it is tied to the topic or learning goals at hand #ETCoaches
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:10 PM EDT
Q2: What would you expect to see in a teacher-led learning experience that demonstrates that learners are engaged in the process? #ETCoaches #StudentEngagement
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:10 PM EDT
A1: Some of my keywords connected to engaging learners might include: Curiosity, Learner-Centered, Conversations, Passion, Collaboration, Connectedness . . . . #ETCoaches
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:10 PM EDT
The word active is essential! Well said! #ETCoaches

A2: I hope that students are asking questions during teacher-led classroom activites. #ETCoaches
  • MelissaWalley Sep 25 @ 1:14 PM EDT
A1 To me, engagement is focusing on the concept, while doing something active - whether it be conversation, labwork, an activity, to connect and extend learning. Introducing myself as an Instructional Tech Coach from NW Indiana. #ETCoaches
  • MrsMHenning - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:14 PM EDT
A2. Student being active learners rather than passive, asking questions and being involved in the discussion and activities. #ETCoaches
  • shoemap - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:14 PM EDT
A2. I'd see lots of exploring, working with others, discussing the topic, connecting to other topics, etc. #ETCoaches
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:15 PM EDT
A2: First and foremost, students need to be doing something. It's impossible to evaluate (and expect) engagement when we are asking learners to sit silently for a long time. Opportunities for reflection, turn-and-talk, etc. are important instructional moves #ETCoaches
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:15 PM EDT

A3 Dialogue between learners. Ss asking questions and and challenging one another. Risk-taking. Respect. #ETCoaches
  • Filibuster3 Sep 25 @ 1:18 PM EDT
A3 Active conversations, discussions of ways they would use the tool being presented, looking at other Ss' screens. #ETCoaches

Agree, risk taking is important! #ETCoaches
    In reply to @MelissaWalley
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:18 PM EDT
A3: For me a learner centered classroom is a noisy place. Students need to be actively collaborating. Tech can be a nice add on, but I don't want a room of what I calling "typing monkeys" glued to their screens. #ETCoaches
  • _LBaird Sep 25 @ 1:19 PM EDT

A3: Students are typically super focused in student-driven & student-centered activities. They're motivated to start learning and engaging with their learning goals. #ETCoaches

  • MrsMHenning - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:22 PM EDT
A3. Students are engaged and have more choice. It could be problem-based learning, or similar. There is more noise, but productive noise ;) #ETCoaches
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:22 PM EDT
A4: I think learning is very different in T centered vs Ss centered learning, but teacher led learning can be student centered with careful steps taken during planning to allow student choice, built-in opportunities for collaboration, and personalized learning goals #ETCoaches
  • MrsMHenning - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:23 PM EDT
A4. I don't think this is a yes or no answer - because it depends on how engages the students were when it was teacher vs student led. There are lots of variables. #ETCoaches
  • Filibuster3 Sep 25 @ 1:23 PM EDT
A4 I find Ss share more, they seem more confident and not self-conscious about their work or if they did it right or wrong, though both groups appreciate praise and acknowledgment. #ETCoaches
    • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:20 PM EDT
Q4: Reflect and share. Based on the responses to the last two questions, is engagement different in teacher-centered vs learner centered experiences? If yes, how? If no, why? #ETCoaches #StudentEngagement
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:23 PM EDT
A4: While the pedgogy might be different, I don't think the signs of engagement are different in teacher-led vs. student-centered learning experiences. If the kids are engaged, they are having fun and so is the teacher!

Q5: How are learning experiences (PD) that engage educators different than or similar to learning experiences that engage students (School)? Should there be differences? #ETCoaches

Connect with other #ETCoaches through the events and resources listed on our PLN guide https://t.co/GIknDhNwy5
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:27 PM EDT
A5: I think the best PD expereinces model learner-centered engagement. This is not always easy with educators, but I always try to avoid the sit and get PD that was once so common. #ETCoaches
    • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:25 PM EDT
Q5: How are learning experiences (PD) that engage educators different than or similar to learning experiences that engage students (School)? Should there be differences? #ETCoaches
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:28 PM EDT
A5: Often we forget that teachers need to be engaged learners too! There are certainly times where the sit & get PD is necessary, but that shouldn't be the only way of providing professional learning opportunities. We should hear Ts buzzing with ideas & questions #ETCoaches
  • shoemap - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:28 PM EDT
    A5. I think they are similar! #ETCoaches
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:29 PM EDT
I believe that there are few things more powerful than teachers having conversations with teachers. EdCamps taught me this. #ETCoaches

Q6: Sometimes engagement starts the moment learners walk in the door, what tips or strategies do you have to “hook” learners from the beginning of a learning experience? #ETCoaches #StudentEngagement
  • clausensci Sep 25 @ 1:30 PM EDT
A5: PD should be engaging for Ts as with Ss. We are dealing with adult learners, sit and get is not effective for most things. #ETCoaches
  • MelissaWalley Sep 25 @ 1:30 PM EDT
YES! It's great modeling of best practice, too. #ETCoaches
    In reply to @RonitShapiro
  • MrsMHenning - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:31 PM EDT
A5. I really don't think that they are that different. I am in grad school (again) and much of our assessment and participation is similar to my middle and high school students! #ETCoaches
  • Filibuster3 Sep 25 @ 1:31 PM EDT
A5 During one of my credential classes years ago, we had been sitting for about an hour and it hit me! How can we expect CHILDREN to sit this long? Both need involvement and movement to stay engaged, IMHO. #ETCoaches
    • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:25 PM EDT
Q5: How are learning experiences (PD) that engage educators different than or similar to learning experiences that engage students (School)? Should there be differences? #ETCoaches
  • MrsMHenning - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:32 PM EDT
Yes - teachers need both active learning and active listening #ETCoaches
    In reply to @RonitShapiro
  • stonemamma Sep 25 @ 1:32 PM EDT
#ETCoaches - So sorry! need to sign off! It's lunchtime and I've got support visitors! Will catch up later. Thank you, @WickedEdTech, for leading!
  • shoemap - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:33 PM EDT
Giving up control of being "the one who knows everything" is freeing for teachers once they let go of it and healthy for the students. #ETCoaches
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:33 PM EDT
A6: Eliciting prior knowledge is my short (and not so exciting) answer... I need to finally read #TLAP for some more ideas for my 'hook' toolbox! #ETCoaches
  • Filibuster3 Sep 25 @ 1:33 PM EDT
A6 Find a way they can use the tool or feature personally. I find #OneNote and apps like #OfficeLens, and #SeeingAI to be attention grabbers or Sway's start from a topic feature. #MIEExpert #ETCoaches

Q6: Sometimes engagement starts the moment learners walk in the door, what tips or strategies do you have to “hook” learners from the beginning of a learning experience? #ETCoaches #StudentEngagement
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:33 PM EDT
Great point! There is so much research about active learning and we still forget to get kids up and moving more often. #ETCoaches
    In reply to @Filibuster3
  • MelissaWalley Sep 25 @ 1:33 PM EDT
A5 Shouldn't be different. It's easy to say, "teachers are the worst students," but we are just experiencing a passive learning environment. #ETCoaches
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:35 PM EDT
You just reminded me of a favorite quote. "The smartest person in the room is the room" #ETCoaches

A7. Taking the time to get to know each other and form trusting relationships is very important in developing a strong learning community. #ETCoaches
  • clausensci Sep 25 @ 1:37 PM EDT
#ETCoaches A6: I find reflection about the topic and how it relates to the Ts current day to day to be effective way to get things going.
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:37 PM EDT
A7: Making sure ALL learners feel supported and heard- especially after the PD or class is over- helps build a strong community. Facilitate experiences for learners to connect time and time again, whether it's at a casual lunchtime chat or on Twitter #ETCoaches
  • WickedEdTech Sep 25 @ 1:38 PM EDT

A8. SAMR and Bloom, plus some Tomlinson's differentiation ;) Depends if we are talking technology (SAMR) or in general #ETCoaches
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:51 PM EDT
A9: Student voice and choice can be so daunting when you have a whole class of students in front of you! Setting specific success criteria but allowing students autonomy in how they demonstrate knowledge can make this practical for teachers #ETCoaches
  • RonitShapiro Sep 25 @ 1:53 PM EDT
A10: Formative assessment is E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G! When we ask learners to provide some type of output, they are able to demonstrate engagement in the learning goals. We can differentiate our support based on student evidence and not just observations #ETCoaches
  • shoemap - Moderator Sep 25 @ 1:53 PM EDT
A10. Survey tools that are anonymous, turn/talk/share, thumbs up/down. #ETCoaches
