Welcome to today's #ETCoaches Twitter Chat about Engagement. The first question will be here in about 5 minutes. Please share who you are and what you do while we wait! Together we are awesome! @EdTechCoaches@iste
#ETCoaches - Melissa from RAINY PA. I am the educational content manager and online tech coach for Source for Learning. I am also part of the leadership team for this pln.
Q1: How would you define engagement in a classroom or a professional development environment? What keywords can be connected to your definition of engagement? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
We will be using a Q1 and A1 format today. Please remember to use the #ETCoaches hashtags in your responses. This will go quick, so please don't feel rushed in your responses. In the end we will have nice archive of the conversations in the hashtag.
A1: I can tell people are engaged in learning when they are active- either talking about their learning with partners, creating something, responding to a prompt.. but making sure it is tied to the topic or learning goals at hand #ETCoaches
Q2: What would you expect to see in a teacher-led learning experience that demonstrates that learners are engaged in the process? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
A2: conversation, conversation, conversation coupled with "showing" thoughtful reflection and how to engage in discourse, even if you disagree #ETCoaches
A1 To me, engagement is focusing on the concept, while doing something active - whether it be conversation, labwork, an activity, to connect and extend learning. Introducing myself as an Instructional Tech Coach from NW Indiana. #ETCoaches
A2: First and foremost, students need to be doing something. It's impossible to evaluate (and expect) engagement when we are asking learners to sit silently for a long time. Opportunities for reflection, turn-and-talk, etc. are important instructional moves #ETCoaches

A3: For me a learner centered classroom is a noisy place. Students need to be actively collaborating. Tech can be a nice add on, but I don't want a room of what I calling "typing monkeys" glued to their screens. #ETCoaches
A3: Students are typically super focused in student-driven & student-centered activities. They're motivated to start learning and engaging with their learning goals. #ETCoaches
Q4: Reflect and share. Based on the responses to the last two questions, is engagement different in teacher-centered vs learner centered experiences? If yes, how? If no, why? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
A4: I think learning is very different in T centered vs Ss centered learning, but teacher led learning can be student centered with careful steps taken during planning to allow student choice, built-in opportunities for collaboration, and personalized learning goals #ETCoaches
A4. I don't think this is a yes or no answer - because it depends on how engages the students were when it was teacher vs student led. There are lots of variables. #ETCoaches
A4 I find Ss share more, they seem more confident and not self-conscious about their work or if they did it right or wrong, though both groups appreciate praise and acknowledgment. #ETCoaches
Q4: Reflect and share. Based on the responses to the last two questions, is engagement different in teacher-centered vs learner centered experiences? If yes, how? If no, why? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
A4: While the pedgogy might be different, I don't think the signs of engagement are different in teacher-led vs. student-centered learning experiences. If the kids are engaged, they are having fun and so is the teacher! #ETCoaches
Q4: Reflect and share. Based on the responses to the last two questions, is engagement different in teacher-centered vs learner centered experiences? If yes, how? If no, why? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
Q5: How are learning experiences (PD) that engage educators different than or similar to learning experiences that engage students (School)? Should there be differences? #ETCoaches
A5: I think the best PD expereinces model learner-centered engagement. This is not always easy with educators, but I always try to avoid the sit and get PD that was once so common. #ETCoaches
Q5: How are learning experiences (PD) that engage educators different than or similar to learning experiences that engage students (School)? Should there be differences? #ETCoaches
A5: Often we forget that teachers need to be engaged learners too! There are certainly times where the sit & get PD is necessary, but that shouldn't be the only way of providing professional learning opportunities. We should hear Ts buzzing with ideas & questions #ETCoaches
Q6: Sometimes engagement starts the moment learners walk in the door, what tips or strategies do you have to “hook” learners from the beginning of a learning experience? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
A5. I really don't think that they are that different. I am in grad school (again) and much of our assessment and participation is similar to my middle and high school students! #ETCoaches
A5 During one of my credential classes years ago, we had been sitting for about an hour and it hit me! How can we expect CHILDREN to sit this long? Both need involvement and movement to stay engaged, IMHO. #ETCoaches
Q5: How are learning experiences (PD) that engage educators different than or similar to learning experiences that engage students (School)? Should there be differences? #ETCoaches
A6: Eliciting prior knowledge is my short (and not so exciting) answer... I need to finally read #TLAP for some more ideas for my 'hook' toolbox! #ETCoaches
A6 Find a way they can use the tool or feature personally. I find #OneNote and apps like #OfficeLens, and #SeeingAI to be attention grabbers or Sway's start from a topic feature. #MIEExpert#ETCoaches
Q6: Sometimes engagement starts the moment learners walk in the door, what tips or strategies do you have to “hook” learners from the beginning of a learning experience? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
A5 Shouldn't be different. It's easy to say, "teachers are the worst students," but we are just experiencing a passive learning environment. #ETCoaches
Q7: Beyond the start of class or a PD experience, there are many correlations between engagement and building strong learning communities. What tips do you have to help build a community of connected curious life-long learners? #ETCoaches
A7: Making sure ALL learners feel supported and heard- especially after the PD or class is over- helps build a strong community. Facilitate experiences for learners to connect time and time again, whether it's at a casual lunchtime chat or on Twitter #ETCoaches
A7: There are so many great ways to build engagement at the start of a class. From a simple greeting to a quick formative question, to videos. Imagination and creativity are all you need sometimes. #ETCoaches
Q6: Sometimes engagement starts the moment learners walk in the door, what tips or strategies do you have to “hook” learners from the beginning of a learning experience? #ETCoaches#StudentEngagement
Q9: Student agency and student voice are often connected to engagement. What strategies or resources would recommend to support one or both of these concepts? #ETCoaches
Q10: Engagement can be difficult to measure, how can formative assessment support student engagement in classrooms. What assessment strategies or tools would you recommend to support formative assessment as part of the learning process? #ETCoaches
A9: Student voice and choice can be so daunting when you have a whole class of students in front of you! Setting specific success criteria but allowing students autonomy in how they demonstrate knowledge can make this practical for teachers #ETCoaches
A10: Formative assessment is E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G! When we ask learners to provide some type of output, they are able to demonstrate engagement in the learning goals. We can differentiate our support based on student evidence and not just observations #ETCoaches
A10. #ETCoaches - I like the variety of tech tools available for assessment. Some of my favorites are @Flipgrid for verbal response. @quizlet is my favorite for online quizzes and practice. Group assessment would go to @quizizz
Q11: Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration are skills that can be connected to activities that engage learners. What are your favorite #EdTech resources that you use to engage learners? #ETCoaches
A11: One of the most engaging tools I've seen is @cospaces_edu! Paired with smart instructional moves like co-use, modeling thinking, software tours, and teacher monitoring, students can really create! #ETCoaches
