A2: They may provide more creativity to teachers than a set textbook curriculum and digital materials can be designed to allow easy reuse in a wide range of teaching and learning situations. #PatinsIcam,#GoOpen, #AEM4All
  • ksuding Jan 22 @ 8:37 PM EST
A2: Teachers can create materials that are CURRENT and more individually designed for their Ss #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:37 PM EST

    • ss4122 Jan 22 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: Text, media, and other digital assets that are useful for teaching and learning that anyone can use! #patinsicam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:38 PM EST
A2: OER's more recent popularity likely has to do with them being open-source (proprietary free) and probably also because of the federal GoOpen initiative with some states. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:38 PM EST
    Maybe...maybe not. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @jlfahlbush

You did! Information from creative commons, a way to clearly share open materials with an open license https://t.co/nPqyS5FIqF #PatinsIcam
  • ss4122 Jan 22 @ 8:38 PM EST
A2: Maybe because they are inexpensive and fairly easy for Ts to create. #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:38 PM EST
A2: Saving money by ditching textbooks means we find resources where we can! #PatinsIcam
  • katietaylorIN Jan 22 @ 8:38 PM EST
    The power of relevance! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @ksuding
  • ksuding Jan 22 @ 8:39 PM EST
    A1: Excellent #OER resource for that answer: https://t.co/mBwNfPrluQ #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:39 PM EST
So is it the flexibility or the cost that makes OER desirable? Teacher created material is time consuming! #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:39 PM EST
Love this. I would also add that they can show more of a global perspective #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @katietaylorIN, @ksuding

  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:41 PM EST
YES! Incredibly time consuming! ...with other potential barriers as well. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • kellygrillo Jan 22 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: Budgets are a real reason...but the timelessness in true science is a concern, as paper books are published they are already out of date. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:42 PM EST
I love that when you type The Civil War into Wiki... You get a list of a lot more than just the one in the USA. #PatinsIcam

Q3: Are all OER truly cost-free? What other "costs" hidden or otherwise, might be involved? #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:42 PM EST
Yes! SO MANY arguments FOR wikipedia. That is certainly one. #PatinsIcam

  • JamieWithering2 Jan 22 @ 8:43 PM EST
Jamie from Greenwood late to the chat! Sorry lost track of time... And I know very little about OER so Im here to lurk and learn more. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:43 PM EST
A3: Costs to students may be lowered but the educator time to create the materials is costly. That time is extended when materials require extra time and training to make them accessible to all students. #PatinsIcam, #GoOpen, #AEM4All
  • kellygrillo Jan 22 @ 8:43 PM EST
A2: Engagement is also a reason, crowd sourcing documents, even textbooks allows for multiple perspectives and cultural competence as well! #PatinsIcam

    Hi Jamie! Welcome! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JamieWithering2
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:44 PM EST
So is this saying that OER is more cost effective than books for current material? #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @kellygrillo
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:44 PM EST
A3: Not necessarily - anything that is free in the way of money usually means you must share the proper attribution or that you are sharing your data #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:44 PM EST
A3: I would strongly say NO. There's time, there's paying for images, graphs, and diagrams, there's the cost to properly vet them for content, copyright, and accessibility, to archive & catalog them, etc. #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:44 PM EST
    I like that hashtag ;) #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @katietaylorIN, @kristieshoup
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:45 PM EST
Does using OER put a lot onto the plate of the teacher? Is there a role for the curriculum committee? #PatinsIcam
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:45 PM EST
    Great questions! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:45 PM EST

Q3: Are all OER truly cost-free? What other "costs" hidden or otherwise, might be involved? #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Jan 22 @ 8:45 PM EST
A3: There is also the cost of time, for searching and evaluating the content. Just because it's open doesn't mean it's quiality #PatinsIcam
  • ss4122 Jan 22 @ 8:45 PM EST
A4: They do take time to create and time is a precious commodity for Ts. Hopefully Ts are also considering the accessibility of the materials and this step is also takes time. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:46 PM EST
Either way, you may not get an accessible curriculum. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:46 PM EST
I always think "ya get what you pay for..." #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconradslp
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:46 PM EST
I see vetting OER as a great curriculum committee replacement for textbook adoption but at a more critical level; probably by grade level or subject #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4: Yes, but… It is still appropriate to give credit/cite your resources. #PatinsIcam, #GoOpen, #AEM4All

A3: They do take time to create and time is a precious commodity for Ts. Hopefully Ts are also considering the accessibility of the materials and this step is also takes time. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:47 PM EST
This is VERY true. I've yet to see more than 2 that are fully accessible. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @PATINSSandi, @JulieHKuhn
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:47 PM EST
Which we all know it VERY valuable. Something we can't get back! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @ksuding
  • jconradslp Jan 22 @ 8:47 PM EST
I think you're right! My schools' ciric committees met every 7 years or so (as budget allowed) over one subject, this would be a needed team shift #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush, @JulieHKuhn
  • ksuding Jan 22 @ 8:48 PM EST
Plus...OER isn't always a one size fits ALL students or classroom. Modification to fit needs and make them accessible needs to be intentionally thought out #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconradslp
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:48 PM EST
And quite often not reimbursed. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jconti281, @ksuding
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:48 PM EST
Q4: If teachers use OER, are they free to modify them? #PatinsIcam
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:48 PM EST
There does need to be a process, framework, oversight and a support system in place, it would seem. #PatinsIcam
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:48 PM EST
Yes, eventually. However, we still have many Ts creating singular worksheets that are not accessible. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush, @JulieHKuhn
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:49 PM EST
Who will facilitate/dictate this process? This will cost time and Money also. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:50 PM EST
True that! so we are back to curriculum and accessibility considerations. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @jlfahlbush
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:50 PM EST
A4: Some yes, some no. It depends upon the mandated attribution. Read the fine details carefully! As @PATINSSandi said Creative Commons does a good job helping to explain how to give the proper credit: https://t.co/ZPyM5d8aAZ #PatinsIcam
  • JamieWithering2 Jan 22 @ 8:50 PM EST
A3: But more of a follow up question... are these resources that other teachers create that I could use or is it tools for me to create resources for my class?? #timeconsuming??? #PatinsIcam
    • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:42 PM EST
Q3: Are all OER truly cost-free? What other "costs" hidden or otherwise, might be involved? #PatinsIcam
  • ss4122 Jan 22 @ 8:50 PM EST
A4: It depends on how the creator of the materials licensed them. #PatinsIcam
  • jconradslp Jan 22 @ 8:50 PM EST
Or getting popular things from Teachers Pay Teachers and then realizing the cute font, layout, and file type is garbage #Guilty #PatinsIcam
    • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:48 PM EST
Yes, eventually. However, we still have many Ts creating singular worksheets that are not accessible. #PatinsIcam
      In reply to @jlfahlbush, @JulieHKuhn
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:50 PM EST
A4: Yes, I believe that if that content is truly OER, then it is open source... free to modify. #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:51 PM EST
There would certainly need to be training involved before the committees were put to work #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @JulieHKuhn
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:52 PM EST
It doesn't have to cost $$, does it OER Specialist, @PATINSSandi? I bet you could help! :) #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @PATINSSandi, @JulieHKuhn, @PATINSSandi
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:52 PM EST
It would be my pleasure! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush, @JulieHKuhn

Yes, conversations on accessibility is certainly critical for TEXTBOOK adoption and OER. Sample language: https://t.co/AmMLo9eL8D #PatinsIcam

  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:53 PM EST
Also guilty of fun fonts on TpT and wasting my own time making a worksheet/visual aid look "cute". Live, learn, & save time :) #PatinsIcam

  • jconradslp Jan 22 @ 8:53 PM EST
Take a look at some open licenses, they delineate what is modifiable, under what circumstances and how https://t.co/NGWEaT23RO #PatinsIcam
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:53 PM EST
OER are resources that other educators, companies, nonprofits, people, etc are putting out there for you to use with your Ss like Teachers Pay Teachers, NASA, Smithsonian, PBS to name a few #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JamieWithering2
  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:54 PM EST
As I understand OER, these resources come from many places. Some are already created. Is that right, gang? #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JamieWithering2
  • KaraGuiff Jan 22 @ 8:54 PM EST
A 3: - Cost can be the learning of the students. Our district went to OER for math - BIG mistake! Not SO awful for secondary Ts who are content experts, but many Ts had to search, vet, etc. sources while teaching MANY subjects in elementary. Students paid the price! #patinsicam
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:54 PM EST
Q5: What does it really mean for OER to truly be accessible & how can you tell they are? #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:54 PM EST
A5: OERs are accessible if they are formated without barriers to usage. A great tool to check this in Google is the Grackle Accessibility Checker for G Suite. #PatinsIcam, #GoOpen, #AEM4All
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:55 PM EST
True, they still need to be checked for accessibility. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @JulieHKuhn, @JamieWithering2
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:55 PM EST
Excellent point! Ts aren't the only ones losing precious time, but so are the Ss :( #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @KaraGuiff
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:55 PM EST
YES... but Creative Commons is fairly complicated to use. I've been pushing teacher to build CC into their curriculum for years (for theirs and their Ss content), but it's just complex. #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @jlfahlbush, @PATINSSandi
  • ksuding Jan 22 @ 8:56 PM EST
A5: Ask yourself "Can my Ss engage with this?" Materials have to be USABLE for all learners. #PatinsIcam
    • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:54 PM EST
Q5: What does it really mean for OER to truly be accessible & how can you tell they are? #PatinsIcam
  • KaraGuiff Jan 22 @ 8:56 PM EST
And, sadly, often the special education experts are not part of the adoption committee, so don't even see the materials before they are adopted. #patinsicam
    • ksuding Jan 22 @ 8:53 PM EST
Yes, conversations on accessibility is certainly critical for TEXTBOOK adoption and OER. Sample language: https://t.co/AmMLo9eL8D #PatinsIcam

  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:57 PM EST
That's unfortunate but not shocking. Leaving educators without textbooks after many years of use is a change that must be handled properly. This includes training on how to create curriculum resources that are accessible, engaging, and sensible #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @KaraGuiff
  • danielgmcnulty Jan 22 @ 8:57 PM EST
A5: This is a difficult answer because Accessibility is dependent on the USER. This means OER content has to be as flexible as possible. #PatinsIcam
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:57 PM EST
    Too true! #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @KaraGuiff
  • PATINSSandi Jan 22 @ 8:57 PM EST
Might call it "Universally Designed" #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty
  • jconradslp Jan 22 @ 8:58 PM EST
No doubt! Learning and applying what your rights are as a content creator consumer helps (and part of Indiana academic standards) and there are lots of resources for educators. Also, this tool to help choose right license: https://t.co/1g4jYbeLEt #PatinsIcam

    In reply to @KaraGuiff
  • jlfahlbush Jan 22 @ 8:58 PM EST
That makes sense, but I'd have no real idea where to start. Creative Commons is getting easier to use in my opinion. At least when you find images that you'd like to use that are licensed that way #PatinsIcam
    In reply to @danielgmcnulty, @PATINSSandi
  • ss4122 Jan 22 @ 8:58 PM EST
A5: One quick and easy way to check for accessibility is to see if you can select the text. If it is, this will allow access to the text in many instances. #PatinsIcam
  • jconti281 Jan 22 @ 8:59 PM EST
This concludes tonight's chat. Thanks for participating as we learned about the strengths & potential pitfalls of OER! #PatinsIcam

I do think it's definitely worth your time to keep up on the conversations around OER. Certainly don't discount OER! #PatinsIcam

  • JulieHKuhn Jan 22 @ 8:59 PM EST
Engagement, absolutely. I like to point out knowing a students level of independence with any school task, which is implied with engagement. We should shout it out! #PatinsIcam
