Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

Q1: What was your biggest fear when you reached out to someone online? What did u gain from reaching out?
Hey all!!!!! Super excited to be back for another week of awesome learning!!!!!!!!
A1: one of my fears what that they would think "who is this weirdo reaching out to me" haha
Q1: What was your biggest fear when you reached out to someone online? What did u gain from reaching out?
Hey Matt! How is it going?
A1: Biggest fear was being ignored. Gained bigger PLN validation in what I do
A1: Sounding "stupid." Made me realize how my Ss might feel when they share or question in class.
Hey, Jeremy from CT, parent/ParentCamp/digcit advocate.
A1. Looking like an idiot by trying to sell myself too hard! Not literally selling myself
Debra from TX- instructional technologist
A1) That nobody would reply, nobody would like what I had to say.
I do understand that for sure. Ditto.
A1 - I feared they were WAY better and WAY smarter than me - I realized we’re all just people working hard for kids!
A1 Fear of getting judged. I was concerned that ppl wouldn't take me seriously just bc I'm still a student.
A1: Definitely felt the fear of being a dork, but then I reconciled that with my inner geek and success!
A1 Greatest fear? Sounding ridiculous and being mid-heard ... Gain? An awesome, supportive PLN lik… https://t.co/MNtXcptz3r
Q1: What was your biggest fear when you reached out to someone online? What did u gain from reaching out?
At least you're here, how many of your peers are doing a Twitter chat on a Monday night whlie in college?
Biggest fear would be how I cane across
A1 Today, I'm not just a college student online chatting with all of u, but I've been referred as an educator. What a honor
A1: Fear- No one would listen or care. That my ideas weren't interesting or relevant. Gained a support system (PLN) to grow.
A1: Judgement, afraid I'll say the spect of thing and look stupid
Right?! It makes us think of alt ways Ss can share without intimidation.
Great point Sandra and lesson to learn about our kids! https://t.co/aM48OS4uFK
A1: Sounding "stupid." Made me realize how my Ss might feel when they share or question in class.
A1: My biggest fear was not knowing what to say, but realized it wasn't that hard and lots of fun!
A1: Silence from the other side. Afraid that I wouldn't be seen as credible.
A1: being too honest on a public platform- always taught to keep work worries/questions hush hush
A1: When the guys & I started , we were 3 lonely voices in the twittersphere wondering if anyone wo… https://t.co/NT9XROMzWr
Still struggle with this one...good call.
A1) It can be as intimidating as reaching out in person. But making new connections is invaluable. https://t.co/DHTdL70K0k
Q1: What was your biggest fear when you reached out to someone online? What did u gain from reaching out?
A1.2 What happened was mix of validating, idea stretching + resource sharing, not to mention invites 2 participate more 2/2
A1: I wasn't familiar with a topic in a chat and was afraid I would look dumb. Folks really were supportive and helped out
Woot woot! https://t.co/pSUGsWdlrU
A1 Today, I'm not just a college student online chatting with all of u, but I've been referred as an educator. What a honor
A1 not sure if others would think I am a weirdo or something. Gained a ton of new perspectives and ideas.
You bring up a good point. I don't think from all the ppl I go to school with, don't do what I do on here.
A1 My biggest fear was not meeting the expectations of the teacher and the class we were Skyping with.
I agree! I think that is a very natural feeling when going out of your comfort zone.
Absolutely worth it and if others are negative, that's what the block button is for!
A1: not as much as fear as feeling overwhelmed of who to follow
A1: Fear sometimes is miscommunication. A Plus: I've learned lots from those who agree & disagree. Most ppl are respectful.
A1: Gains: ideas, support, connections, validation, a place to reflect, and confidence to try new things
Truth - just be yourself and keep it real! https://t.co/cZNOqLDUow
A1: My biggest fear was not knowing what to say, but realized it wasn't that hard and lots of fun!
A1 Fear -- Being ignored. Gain -- Most awesome PLN on the planet.
You are ahead of the curve, advantage goes to you!
I LOVE when students join chats. It's an authentic shared learning experience instead of a T/S dynamic.
Hey . I'm Bethany K Teacher in ID
A1 Fear of being inadequate is huge fear (both in person & virtually) I've learned tons!
A1: I was afraid that the "educelebrities" on Twitter wouldn't have time for me. Found out, we are all Ts who love Ss!
A1.2 a new person in a chat sent me a DM asking about protocols ... my response was "go for it ... I'll have your back"
that differentiates it from much of the rest of the Twitterverse. Education folk on Twitter want to learn.
I find many of them to be better than the "ordinary" Ts
A1 I have gained a huge network of teachers to expand my learning and gain ideas from.
Oh I do too! But with ea. time I put myself out there, it gets easier and the doubt fades.
A1: Not getting any response! I've gained SO much learning by reaching out!
that is definitely true.Great way to broaden your perspective.
Dennis O'Hara from Long Island, NY
Not to get maudlim: let's not overlook fact that you 3 had each other. Strength in numbers, even small 1s
A1 : I feared the unknown; I gained a knowledge that there are people who think like I do and it's cool! I like it :)
Truth! https://t.co/XFZgCYJOOM
A1: I was afraid that the "educelebrities" on Twitter wouldn't have time for me. Found out, we are all Ts who love Ss!
A1: showed me the power of a by reaching back & helping out
Q2: Have you found time to celebrate every child? What are ways you celebrate students?
Q2: Have you found time to celebrate every child? What are ways you celebrate students?
don't worry about being good enough, just be here and you will get better!
A1 Had a bit of a bad exper & disagreed with wrong person. Tends to get me into trouble. 😏 Tweets for days.
A1: gained a lot of ideas and a growing PLN, also a sense of confidence that I have good ideas and something to offer
A1-if the responses aren't instant it can be disheartening. Also scary to publish vulnerability online.Authenticity is key.
Point taken. I wouldn't trade this band of brothers for the world. https://t.co/2t7RLSr3Bd
Not to get maudlim: let's not overlook fact that you 3 had each other. Strength in numbers, even small 1s
A2: I think it's imperative that we find time, daily, to celebrate those around us. Students or colleagues.
A1: I wasn't sure it would be worth my time. It is so worth it-so many connections made & resources found.
I think you learn from experience how to navigate online communication. Things I worried about yrs ago don't worry me now.
LeAnne from TX. Gifted program coordinator and lifelong learner.
I'll add that the worst experience I've had on Twitter (& I'm still a newbie <1yr) was a group that could only see one side
A1 If they would care about me. They did. The relationship has been amazing! https://t.co/PDwjyf0TPG
Q1: What was your biggest fear when you reached out to someone online? What did u gain from reaching out?
A1 Not much fear, met a beautiful wife from reaching out on Facebook! Twitter confirmation of good ideas and new learning
to their credit, many are just as open to those outside the education profession.
A2: We make daily phone calls home, send notes, announce over loudspeaker, and more!
Feeling valued is so important! It's not why we go into education, but it does help us to continue.
A1: Fear-judgment and lack of acceptance. Positive-cybertribe of like-minded educators who have passion
A2 - Calls home, high-fives, knowing all their names, teaching coding class, all-time quarterback at recess!
A1-honestly, rejection...how do we measure up when we don't know each other...gained an awesome PLN
Another fear is what we chat is still floating out there in cyberspace and someone can dig it up
A2) We give tickets for manners and positive behavior/effort. Called certificate of awesome.
4 Ss recovered retention to transition to HS, 50 more have recovered units to avoid failure, celebrate each quiz, assign
I wish many of the ppl I go to school with would join. They would learn so much. These chats are helpful
A1: I, too, was afraid that no one would respond and I am pleasantly amazed by and thankful for the supportive Ts!
A2: We host STAR Night once a quarter to celebrate Ss academic success and progress. Great community turnout!
A2 celebrating students is awesome. For me fist bumps at arrival, positive phone calls home, eating lunch with students
A2. : High fives are the best! Followed by calls home to brag and bits of candy :)
A2 Hurtful truth: Not yet. Working on it always, noticing them being awesome, telling them, sharing what they make.
A2: Ask Ss about interests and show I care about their answers. Calls home about the good not just negative.
A1: greatest fear- Early on, what do I have to offer? Greatest gain- so many great ideas, connecting across globe
A2: posting Ss work in hallway and classroom. Also posting pics and shoutouts on twitter
Love that Travis! https://t.co/66orT2XV4e

A2: YES! Parent phone calls, brag tags, student of the month... so fun!
A2: I try 2 ask Ss specific Qs that let em know I listen to them when they talk to me so they recognize I care about 'em
A2 Celebrate children by telling each one that you appreciate them, who they are
Q2: taking time to ask children "How are you doing today?"
A2 would love to hear how prep Ts celebrate every child, I see 400+ each week, I def don't do it
TY so much for the great words. I try my best. I think that's more than enough when you're learning
great point. Can be hard to be vulnerable.
A2: Our Kindness Crew recognized "flashlight students" who are leading the way in our school. https://t.co/qMxNrrKw3w
A2: I used to do a student of the week award for each class period
sometimes you just have to step back. I know easier said than done
A2 My Mom said to me last night: "If not you, then who?" Stuck with me all day.
A2 we celebrate by positive phone calls!
What I love about Twitter? You can find another group to join! 😍 is very accepting and awesome! Lo… https://t.co/86qsu0O2SS
I'll add that the worst experience I've had on Twitter (& I'm still a newbie <1yr) was a group that could only see one side
Cheers during class instruction for awesome answers or behavior, whole class cheers for that student.
A2 Celebrating each one is important, but it important to do it naturally! I try to great each child every day!
A2. Mention them by name w/their success stories when talking to other people...even when they aren't around.
A2: Being open and looking for great things happening. It is wonderful what can happen with a smile and acknowledgement.

A2. : High fives are the best! Followed by calls home to brag and bits of candy :)
A2) Post pics on website...will e now that all permissions are in. Ss and Ps like to see them engaged and embracing school
A2: Involving their passions, believing in them and showing them I care for each of them!
A2 As a future T, I plan to celebrate my Ss by showing them I care. Giving them choices, smiling. Making them feel at home
A2: Also utilize Positive Office Referrals, weekly character awards, "shout-outs" during morning announcements, etc.
A2-we have found new ways to recognize great S behavior....would love to do more bday pics/calls
A2 find a way to brag on them and make it meaningful.

A2: posting Ss work in hallway and classroom. Also posting pics and shoutouts on twitter

Ugh, Tech issues. Have to check out. See you next time.
Q2: I like to think I celebrate every child, but I wonder what my Ss would say. Need to be more consistent and intentional.
Q2: Giving choice celebrates each child. Let them share their ideas and special interests. Learn from them.
A2 Not only celebrate the success but also the failure. Failure is the next step to success. We learn from them
A2. Also, include their name in formal school communication into the community. More impactful than an email from the T.
Momma' know tough love😄 Thanks for sharing! https://t.co/wgW9LedsNi
A2 My Mom said to me last night: "If not you, then who?" Stuck with me all day.
Q2- we have to have a culture of celebration. We must make time to celebrate Ss and Ts and their successes.
I have this gut feeling that she's really not seeing the light. :)
Fist bump of encouragement to you, Eric. Notable when head-down vibe from some is, "I'd rather not be noticed."
A2 Set up a Talent Show to showcase those talents impossible to demonstrate by filling in scantrons.
TY so much. I didn't think of it that way. We are all students learning from each other.
Q3: How have you led recently? What needs to change for you to be a better leader?
Q3: How have you led recently? What needs to change for you to be a better leader?
A2) Never underestimate the power of eye contact and a smile!
