"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

well it is dark here and I am not as important as you
A1: I think back to when PC took over typewriters. What we can do now with ipads in the classroom can be a significant jump
We don't discriminate. You could bring us all to the light https://t.co/WJOSvdNaEH
I'm not doing bc I live in the Pacific Northwest and it won't be dark here for three more hours.

Wow! Probably you'll be on Thanksgiving break by Halloween. Lol https://t.co/wt90ESnrbq
Andrew from Omaha Westside. We've been in school for a month now!
You gotta start somewhere
A1: small steps, simple tools, meaningful progress, Ss support
Hi all. Katie High School teacher librarian. Wooot wooot! Juggling dinner, Mommy duties, chat just for y'all 😉
I taught him everything he knows
A1 hand holding, modeling, scaffolding, sharing of ideas, tech coaching, sharing success stories https://t.co/zvY3JqG7np
A1: have to make connections between tools and the sound pedagogical practices they are familiar with
lol love it self-corrects to
A11. Continue using it, don’t let others’ fears stop you. 2. Share the benefits 3. Help if asked
og shoots they posted a q already
A1: start with the innovators and let them model...or have them empower Ss and let them help Ts. S led geek squad
I'm Chantell from St. Louis & I teach a departmentalized 4th gr + class
Robert from Florida--digital integration specialist
A1: Start simple! Let them see it in action and explain why it has an impact in your class!
A1 time, exploration, trust, fun, planning time, support, devices and more support
Wow! I guess we all get our days in one way or another.
A1: We do the work, invite them in, and let them catch the bug. Share our stories.
HS 1:1 Instructional Coach from Garland, TX all 's getting Ipads in 2 wks!
A1: We've done a lot of our PD in small groups where teachers get to choose what they learn.
Tech supporters have to show Ts WHY it's important, then PACE! Overwhelming pushes ppl away! https://t.co/4fr9pQeXC6
success stories big and small
I'm not more importat, but more important. :)
Kendra, 6th G World History...finally awake at ten on a Monday night!
Oh...and I'm Julie, tech coordinator from Chattanooga, TN- just recently changed my Twitter handle 😳chargerrific lives on
A1: Show them a tool and how it will help their process--build confidence w/relevance 1st
A1 Start small. As with our Ss, meet Ts where they are in their tech journey without judgement
A1: Would start by saying tech should be part of classroom regardless of teacher fear. Not an option. Co-teach to support.
A1: They are willing when they know they can come for help. Success is contagious. They want it. https://t.co/B15F5D58v7
A1v2 We are considering offering lane change credit for useful PD like becoming tech proficient to encourage adoption
A1 have hard time with T's who say I can't bc x y and z when they really have no intention, hard to work with that
A1: We should deliver lessons though many diff types; blogs, in person, individualized..
A1: Make sure that the Ts have plenty of resources for tech help. Have student teach teams. Then u have help in classrooms.
Yea, I already gave him trouble about this last week.
A1: by slowly shifiting the paradigm, maybe even one teacher at a time. Lots of hand holding and demo in room.
A1: be a servant leader - an extra set of hands/back up when they take a risk & try something new with students
A1 Slowly in a way that they can see that it is relevant to what they are teaching.
A1b: I also have many tech-savvy teachers who open up their classrooms for other Ts to observe their tech usage.
A1: we should take it slow but at the same time at a steady pace; model and then observe and give timely feedback
Baby steps. Do not attack them like Daleks but ease them into tech like the Dr eases in new comp https://t.co/iKQQIXbVoP
I can definitely say the same. I am in great company!
A1: Start with one concept or subject area at a time and build from there. Create a crew of support within your teachers.
A1: Give Ts time to familiarize w/ before deploying school/district wide
A1: Through grace and empathy. A little understanding of the plight of the "tech-challenged" goes a long way...
practice and individual interests are important
A1 show them how it can improve instruction in small pieces
A1: my fav rollout is to have actual students SHOW the Ts how to use these tools
A1 By being COOL! Be cool about it. Don't look down at them or judge them or tell them they're irrelevant. Be cool.
Tom from MKE. FYI- created a new app this week - online today - https://t.co/5hlwfCPwbq - Tech people have to create.
A1: Wish I knew fool proof way. It's a continual struggle. Keep showing them and putting a few helpful apps in their hands.
Love the idea of a st-led geek squad ... 💜💜💜 https://t.co/jpUlVjQMYo
A1: start with the innovators and let them model...or have them empower Ss and let them help Ts. S led geek squad
A1 new P instituted collaboration blocks too, so that's a big change, some Ts are super excited, me too, others R stalling
A1b: but the pedagogy has to change first, reluctant Ts have to see the need before offered the tools.
Moore (2011) - create a low transactional distance with socialized m-learning. In short, build apps the encourage Ts use.
A1 Create opportunities for Ts to collab, play, and explore tech together rather than a lecture about it.
True for Ts within your school and collaboration with those who work in different boards/systems
perceived relevance is key!
Good idea! https://t.co/w3Gugm8LHn
A1b: I also have many tech-savvy teachers who open up their classrooms for other Ts to observe their tech usage.
This "sandbox" time is vital. Many grievances I hear r about not having time to play w/the tool https://t.co/UNt8sylyTy
A1: Give Ts time to familiarize w/ before deploying school/district wide
A1: start small with tech and build on foundation. Find something you like and use it
A1:I'm a big believer in implementing goals for teachers to reach. It's the only way some will try.
Creating opportunities for success if essential for both Ts and Ss totally agree! https://t.co/e8yVK6ttDh
A1 Create opportunities for Ts to collab, play, and explore tech together rather than a lecture about it.
Yes! break down the barriers of fear!
A1: Demonstrate Ts how easy tech can be & how it does NOT replace other tools, just enhances :) https://t.co/GcPPH1KmOq
A1: Allow "less than tech savvy" choice & then lots of support-and then follow up support. Then highlight their initiative.
It's going. Liking the new Tech TOSA position. How is your year so far?
A1 I love the idea of taking small steps but making sure everyone is at least trying with support
A1 in my school S engagement is so lacking, my goal is to tie tech use, projects, cool ideas, to S engagement
out Ts would balk at that because they firmly believe Ts always know more than Ss and I cry myslf to sleep.
I agree. We've implemented "Collaborative Time" so Ts can work together to figure out what tech works in class
A1 Start with teacher interest. Ask them what they need.
A1: you don't have to do it all, all at once. Find one thing tech that you can use in a meaningful way. Just one thing.
A1: By building capacity and confidence in those teachers! Co-teaching, modeling, and just being their rock!
A very effective strategy. https://t.co/gaOwwtQgtN
A1: my fav rollout is to have actual students SHOW the Ts how to use these tools
Absolutely, Rome wasn't built in a day, no reason to rush https://t.co/iZJJE8ZYaM
A1 I love the idea of taking small steps but making sure everyone is at least trying with support
A1: ASK THEM what their greatest fear is re: tech. Then eliminate it.
Precisely. No one likes pretentiousness. Be cool; not a tool. https://t.co/C0xlMRZaKB
A1 By being COOL! Be cool about it. Don't look down at them or judge them or tell them they're irrelevant. Be cool.
"Lane change credit" - clever!!! 💜💜 https://t.co/W7pbrTeQAv
A1v2 We are considering offering lane change credit for useful PD like becoming tech proficient to encourage adoption
A1: Build Ts capacity to integrate by demonstrating, training, & mentoring
being nice matters. Even with old people.
I am glad to hear your year is full steam ahead. Busy for me, def gaining momentum, all good!
A1 Don't tell them they're doctors with leeches. Don't tell them they're hurting their kids. Help. Introduce. Be cool
A1 I am teaching more time this year so I have less time for support so I"m not sure how it will work out
A1b New teach used to be scary for some but today's tech has become much more intuitive. Companies seem to design 4 ease
A1: make them say " woah" I saw it happen with the PD even a veteran teacher with no cell phone was excited
one thing can lead to self- motivation to explore and expand
Yes, just relax, take the pressure off, assure them they are great Ts and will do great with tech https://t.co/BB6CRMgqq3
A1 Don't tell them they're doctors with leeches. Don't tell them they're hurting their kids. Help. Introduce. Be cool
A1: support Encouragement, sharing, sharing mistakes & PlanB give time 2play & access 2great resources as well as mentors
A1: Send a few of Ts to iPad Palooza & then hold your own in-school "Palooza" 1st for Ts, then one for Ss!
A1: Slow roll out - we only require ELA teachers to use 1:1 this year. All other subjects optional for now. Less pressure.
I think this is an excellent point. Don't dive into the deep end just to dive in. https://t.co/4wLM6SuJbi
A1: you don't have to do it all, all at once. Find one thing tech that you can use in a meaningful way. Just one thing.
I'd love to throw an in ! https://t.co/ZydiRR1Pv3
A1: Send a few of Ts to iPad Palooza & then hold your own in-school "Palooza" 1st for Ts, then one for Ss!
does that scary ally happen?! Yikes. Id hate to work in that environment!
Right! Small "tweaks" first, instead of complete overhauls are less overwhelming
I have to go dad so I'm ceding all further answers to
A1 b: giving Ts what they need, meet them where they are and build up from there. Generally asking what they want!
A1b New tech used to be scary for some but today's tech has become much more intuitive. Companies seem to design 4 ease
A1: make it content specific 👍🏻
A1 I think it is about building relationships so they will trust you and understand you want to help them help Ss
Happens on twitter All. The. Time. There's a few ppl who are very superior and condescending.
yup. You have to build confidence and you can't do it all at once
Can be tough though. Reluctant users are often afraid of sand boxing. https://t.co/KzKRsHQcxo
This "sandbox" time is vital. Many grievances I hear r about not having time to play w/the tool https://t.co/UNt8sylyTy
A1: Give Ts time to familiarize w/ before deploying school/district wide
Let's introduce ourselves with your name, where you live, and your favorite Labor Day tradition!
A2: Some teachers have had some great success with their approach and changing it could cost them student success. Go slow
We will be following the Q1/A1 format as always, and our favorite Yinzer will be joining and I from the sky
Humility and positivity go a long way to building trust.
I wonder if we can get in the sandbox too, maybe that will motivate even though we may know.. https://t.co/dcueTDobpA
We had the in my old school and and I can definitely say it helped Ts feel more comfortable.
I hate this because so much of it is true.
A2 I think we need to determine the issue at hand What specifically are they opposed to? Listen, develop rapport and share
A1b: Introduce technology in the same way we buy a car/house: 1. Value, 2. cost impacts (for time), and 3. benefits.
I think we need this on a shirt. Or bumper sticker at least.
learning at all levels is (and should be) messy. Get in and play
A2: I think some oppose what they don't know. Answer any ?'s they have then let them see Ss and Ts in action with tech
I like this. Never thought of it that way. I will try this. https://t.co/2aE2B6KhoV
A1: ASK THEM what their greatest fear is re: tech. Then eliminate it.
A1: Showcase Ts at all levels in all depts./buildings and how tech is improving Ss growth
A2: The old adage you can catch more bees with honey than vinegar rings true to me on this question.
A2: ask how you can help. Make a simple suggestion of one thing to try. Show first rather than tell.
Pushback usually comes from a place of fear. If u can uncover the underlying concern, you have a better shot at progress
I agree! And not being afraid to fail. Tech is hard the first time for everyone!
A2 Don’t respond, show how it helps Ss. Be ok with the fact that U may not be able to change their minds.
Welcome to its 10 pm on the eastcoast, that means its time to party ETAD style!
A2 I think this is where what said for A1 applies. Ppl will work on tech if they feel empowered w options
Give them alternatives if possible. Show them how & why the tech works. Model & Smile a lot. https://t.co/s6RSZGWxmr
I feel like I've already seen this tonight...
A2: Be patient. Teach by example. Show those people what tech can do. Be honest. A positive attitude changes everything.
A2: My approach is to inundate tech indirectly; then follow it up with opportunities of how to learn how to do use it
A2 give them time and have other Ts and Ss talk about how it is helping them. Let their peers help encourage them
A2: there's a reason why. Find it. There's something they don't trust. Take the time to help them overcome the fear.
Q2: mostly stems from fear of unknown. Start with substitution. SAMR model. Show how! Model. Give expectations
A2: many of the Ts I have worked with were willing but didn't know where to start. So showing multiple times WHAT....
A2: as IC visit c what Ts style is & then chat with them. Wht is the hesitation, wrk 2 build tech capacity baby steps!
A2: I've experienced that. Like a good salesperson, continue to cite the benefits. And try to see their P.O.V.
A2 Listen to their reasons then address them appropriately. Be a professional.
A2: ...could be done and HOW it is done helped out the Ts who were afraid to speak up!
Hi, all! Lisa, differentiation instructional coach joining a bit late:)
A2: Ask to hear their grievances. Show them that there is hope. Work inside the box.
yes truly listening is an important art form
In my experience, reluctant adults want to know exactly how to use each tool. No mindset of play.
Have a panel of Ts & Ss at a faculty meeting sharing tech succ stories
A2: Figure out why they oppose technology so much and try to address it the best you can.
A2: walk away+Trust them 2 do their job the way they see fit. It's not a pissing contest. Do what's best 4 Ss .
A2 Respond w/ kindness ... You can't win them w/ hatred or anger ...Only kind words & relationship https://t.co/d6l7CX45eP
Charissa here. From Texas. A little dirty rice, baked beans and ribs for our tradition
Unlike my students who just mess around with the tech until it works. A different way of doing.
Listening is key. https://t.co/tah44iXYm0
A2 Listen to their reasons then address them appropriately. Be a professional.
A2: If it's a school expectation, work with the teacher to figure out what technology they can use in their classroom.
Hey there, just joining in from SWMO while I watch the roast of Rob Lowe.
A2: Begin by showing Ts subsitution uses (interactive board v whiteboard) baby steps
A1: I feel like we are talking about this a lot lately, just comes down to sharing not forcing. Suggestions not mandates
I see your point. I have experienced both. Once they know, they play. I approach both ways depending..
Exactly. being more open minded to student choice of how to fulfill projects this year.
Show how a current assignment (movie maker) could be easier for all involved with a new tool (we video) & then support them
Listening has solved more problems than yelling ever has.
Q2: show them the time saving tech like Flubaroo-can't deny something that will be more efficient! https://t.co/Ww6Mu5qBIE
A2: Listen to these Ts. What is the root cause of their reluctance? Sell this tech to them! https://t.co/1Z86Qiw062
I rarely see someone opposed to tech, what I do see are teachers who don't want to start something then have it NOT work
Sorry some of my tweets may show up more than once, or be late...
just like we do with the Ss 👍🏼
is now trending in USA, ranking 40
I agree, and enlist students to persuade https://t.co/wJpYgrRKdT
A2: Figure out why they oppose technology so much and try to address it the best you can.
I think an experimental and inquisitive personality can rub off thought too. https://t.co/zbF0gtu3mV
Unlike my students who just mess around with the tech until it works. A different way of doing.
A2: Rally behind the willing. stresses that we focus far too much energy on the naysayers.
A2: If they are that against it, we can't do much to change, keep sharing our stories. Don't allow it to stop you!
A2: Often times Ts do not see value in tech. Make tech integration relevant to their teaching & lessons
A2: respect opinion and find those who want to incorporate tech in classroom. For some seeing is believing
A2 frustrating to me bc last year I fixed the major probs in building related to tech, Ts still use those as excuses
Frustration with network/tech availability = negative teacher attitude ... If computers are not available - why bother?
A2: It comes from fear or lack of understanding of purpose. So model & make all part of process. https://t.co/MEHX2IsjSG
And if they like you as a colleague, and you are approachable, maybe more than once! :) https://t.co/lZY7hZh3hZ
sometimes yes, in my experience most Ts are game to try something new at least once. afterward
A2: Exposure is always key.
Agreed. Model and keep the buzz going hopefully they will get intrigued.
or they are afraid of the additional workload
Hi !! We are a multimedia/library/lounge/learning space for preK! Follow us in our digital journey! https://t.co/IGq2YV2Lb1
A2 4 me, work w/2 new Ts to roll out as much cool stuff as possible, get other Ss interested, have them persuade their Ts
I totally agree! Limiting factor is time w/ other adults to show how. Too many other priorities.
A2: I find with ANY strategy or tool, you have to believe in it. If you don't, it usually won't work for you.
a topic for a whole other chat!
Nothing kills teacher excitement more than not being able to use computers because they've been sucked into testing usage
Very true how will tech help me so I can help my students? Is often the question. https://t.co/62VQ0cf2Q5
A2: Often times Ts do not see value in tech. Make tech integration relevant to their teaching & lessons
A2: bring them the sure fire tools - don't introduce something that may act glitchy and turn them off forever
A2 share your excitement. Share what Ss are able to do. Share what it saved you. Make it relevant. https://t.co/RGe8aWA0A5
Yes! I hear this often from Ts. Is there a good way to combat this fear?
I agree with that. Tech doesn't make a good teacher for sure
I have so little time w/the other Ts in my building, mostly just faculty meetings https://t.co/kn5esA17xJ
I totally agree! Limiting factor is time w/ other adults to show how. Too many other priorities.
Indeed. what if we scheduled time to "experiment?"
A2b: build that relationship! Without it nothing will ever change. Apple wasn't built in a day!
Their concerns arent to be ignored or discarded. They can be the clearest mirror for self-reflection https://t.co/6bTSa3bnZv
A2: Listen to these Ts. What is the root cause of their reluctance? Sell this tech to them! https://t.co/1Z86Qiw062
Students can be a great help
A2 School culture thing? Right?
Ha! I completely hear you on that!
No one likes to feel forced to do anything.
A2: Ask group of tech naysayers how many of them would lose important information if they lost their phone. Wait. Discuss.
time to convince that it is NOT additional, but rather a different workload.
A2 I think we need to determine the issue at hand What specifically are they opposed to? Listen, develop rapport, and share
I read it for a Diffusions in Innovation grad class last year. Helped me determine how to approach & support Ts.
A2: assure them that tech only amplifies good pedagogy. That it could enhance their solid lessons, not replace them
yes but if they've never used anything, it won't seem like it saves time, have to create GForm, setup Flub
A1: Design guided tutorials that walk Ts through the app or platform.
A2: I like Ss to explain how they use tech to reluctant adults. Usually changes opinions pretty quickly.
How I wish!! I've heard that from staff, but when push comes to shove, everyone is always too busy.
and what happens when your school culture is seriously lacking?
A3: Back to typewriters thinkers if you look at a PC you would not even know what a mouse is. Focus on learning to teach
Building relationships is the rock that teaching foundations are built on https://t.co/Mq6kzPIgcG
A2b: build that relationship! Without it nothing will ever change. Apple wasn't built in a day!
In my neck of the woods ... it has been the last couple of weeks ... baseline testing stuff ... SMH ...
A2b I've been known to steal a class to show off how to use tech.Ts are appreciative. It's all about the approach
A2: let it go. They will want to try or they won't. Forcing tech would be in vain, how would force benefit SS?
I think we should have more of this and less of other things, sometimes.
Going to bed early, but here's my thought. Start slow, meet people where they are, coach gently, & cheer positive results!
A3 Not true. This comes from viewing tech as entertainment and distraction
And could save time ... Like short-cycle assessments - immediate data for instruction https://t.co/J11ReJBiSc
time to convince that it is NOT additional, but rather a different workload.
Q2b- and the harder part.Don't take it personal. It's not a reflection on you. Stat open minded to them to be aware of opps
If you can get time, I don't have common planning, so it's hard to get to this discussion https://t.co/daZDRXJpDL
A2 I think we need to determine the issue at hand What specifically are they opposed to? Listen, develop rapport, and share
A3: Not true at all, Ss can create so much with tech. Those Ts think of games/TV when they think of tech.
Exactly. Never time to talk about the whys or the Hows or to just play w/ the the tools.
A3 When people say that ask them for specific examples. I'm amazed at how often Ts back peddle after being asked.
Q3: It is a misconception at times. It depends on the model they are observing. They need to see effective models.
A2: Ts need things that r easy to pull off in classroom. Never hurry tech unless u know a way to make it look easy to use!
A3: I'd say that too if I was sitting at my desk watching them from there.
look at the transformation that can occur with tech in the classroom
A3: maybe they are still thinking about education as memorization, in which case, tech would make "lazy" learners
A2 I'd like to retire "I don't have time" as a T excuse for anything. We prioritize what we deem important
A3: lack of classroom mgmt & not using tech in proper way for task. Ts needs to look at SAMR and develop device mgmt.
Interesting. Could you share more about how you're doing this?
A3: Tech done right increases rigor, engagement and access. Maybe demo some inquiry-based lessons and show the poer of tech
A2: Don't discount them; follow & implement latest research on benefits and dangers of tech in classroom.
Thanks Rachel have a good evening
. at how many have a microwave bahahaha We embrace new tech when we want to
A2: Be a low-key evangelist: tell what happens when Ss use a Activity you made. Show them Marbleslides.
A2 I don't push tech ... I push good teaching ... what activity will work in your world tech or old school?
A3: Our district theme this year is having a growth mindset. That line of thinking is very fixed mindset.
A3: purposeful use of tech with formative assessments used to promote Ss growth is key
A3: not true! Some people view tech as playing video games or texting. It's a great way to connect and dive into a subject!
A3a: Take knowledge & apply it using tech.
A3 As Ps, tech can replace movement; as Ts, we need to tch effective & efficient BYOD usage https://t.co/SxLQIeL3X8
A3 great tech is engaging leads Ss into prob-solv allows for creativity & choice & differentiation https://t.co/H0ISeyKbdE
Use a staged approach to helping them see the value of tech. Help them design a single usage or simple app.
A3 I don't EVER accept this excuse
A3 Ts that don't embrace tech & change their approach might experience this. Transformed personalized learning is not lazy!
A3 Ss see tech use as MORE work (when done well)...tech use forces SS 2 b engaged, contribute, make learning transparent
Agreed, I feel like there may be something to it, because I hear it so often. https://t.co/iO1PUrUeEP
A3 When people say that ask them for specific examples. I'm amazed at how often Ts back peddle after being asked.
A3v2: If T is "sage on the stage" lecturing, I could see misconception of devices being distraction.Need 2 ask: From what?
May just have to go with the ones who aren't too busy and watch the interest spread
time to get rid if misconceptions!
A3: Most likely these Ts don't see value in tech and/or have not learned how to integrate tech effectively
A3: do washing machines, photocopiers and email make people lazy or more efficient?
A2: Tough to find a T without a smartphone anymore. There are few flip-phoners left. AT&T Mafia will take them out soon.
Agreed. Find the pocket of Ts that want too. Build a culture. Expand the culture.
Q3: depends what one is referring to as work. Modern learning should not look 20 yrs ago. Not lazy, different.
A3: Ss know the devices in their hands to be mere gratification devices. Our job is to enlighten them beyond the glow
A3: sounds like an answer from a very teacher-centered
A3: Learning looks different now then it did even 5 years ago. We need to embrace that or we'll continue to hold s's back
Completely agree, however I have to navigate through that, and help those Ts grow... https://t.co/3TBt8bzcc4
A3: Our district theme this year is having a growth mindset. That line of thinking is very fixed mindset.
Too mnay "them" and "they" statements. Show me the proof! I Like it.
I think this is key. Start with those willing to listen. Get the ball rolling with them. https://t.co/SJDRtbxC6w
May just have to go with the ones who aren't too busy and watch the interest spread
Technology does not make Ss lazy unfocused I engaging lessons make Ss bored & off task
Didn't even know this was a thing! Excited to figure more of right now!
Sometimes staff meetings are not maximized. revamp those perhaps.
actually had a teacher say that during a meeting...T tried to help ... i chimed in we need to stop enabling
I agree, when T has "reason" 4 everything tech related, it's time to move 2 willing T
A3: sounds like that is coming from a very teacher centered classroom where tech would distract from sage on stage
If you are worried about students googling the answers to your questions, you are asking the wrong ones.
A3: Ts think tech makes us lazy, but really the lack of effort that tech takes gives us more time to learn and grow.
Amazing, we need to be like the students, wonder, explore, experiment. We better helps kids that way
A3 no way!! Look at how the workforce operates nowadays. We must help the kids learn how to be tech savvy adults
True!!! https://t.co/NbPYg88ypT
A3: do washing machines, photocopiers and email make people lazy or more efficient?
Such an important connection for Ts to remember ... Tech is not just phones! https://t.co/TF46EfKTgL
A3: do washing machines, photocopiers and email make people lazy or more efficient?
A3: They say this bc THEY still see tech as a replacement, not a tool for creation and evaluation. (SAMR)
I'm archiving your tweets as ammo for these types of conversations I have with teachers. :) https://t.co/m2PkWlqhuu
A3: Ts think tech makes us lazy, but really the lack of effort that tech takes gives us more time to learn and grow.
Yes ... Amen!!! 💜💜💜 https://t.co/ytz17icmkM
A3: Ss know the devices in their hands to be mere gratification devices. Our job is to enlighten them beyond the glow
Such a good tip! https://t.co/EKez0CMAOP
A2: Ts need things that r easy to pull off in classroom. Never hurry tech unless u know a way to make it look easy to use!
3) go beyond substitution & adaptation. Show Ts how Tech can take Ss further & deeper in content. Move to creation
agree, I work in school where almost ALL Ts don't use tech AT ALL, none, anything multi step gets a no
A3: may need to spend time on pedagogical shifts toward S centered classroom, creation over consumption, etc b4 tech use
YES simple tasks lead to google answers-engaging inquiry lessons lead to in depth searches and connections
A3: giving Ss of and ways to learn can alleviate that issue.
A3: This needs to be countered with evidence. What use of tech are they referring? We can sell them on different ideas.
A3 anything but lazy...gives them ability 2b creative & unique and the power 2 work together 2 create deeper understanding
Yes, and watch the fire spread. I really believe that we have to start somewhere.
A3: tech provides Ts opportunity to teach Ss skills needed for 21st cent. Opposition to tech is often bc misunderstanding
A3 This drives me nuts, but I struggle with a response. Tech makes life easier, but not sure why school should be hard...
sometimes when the kids are doing, I feel left out. Sometimes they need/want my help, but most are getting it
Exactly. If I really want to do something I'm going to find a way to make it happen.
A3b Tech doesn't make Ss lazy, low or unclear expectations do.
Yup! https://t.co/IPR31cnKhq
If you are worried about students googling the answers to your questions, you are asking the wrong ones.
A3. Because it is a reflection of how they use tech. It is completely untrue.
A3: Misconception. Ss not lazy but have taken control of their learning (tutorials, YouTube, walk-throughs)
Q4 coming in 1 min (This is the real me, the other tweets are from my evil twin)
Very much. It's far too important to let slip past us. Status quo is no longer acceptable.
It will help them to see others jumping on the train.
Amazing what empowerment can do for a student
A3b: Show Ts what could be with redefinition, if they aren't blown away ask them why, Whn they can't say smthng bck dive n
A4: I believe the key to a successful learning come from good data collect. Tech can help collect data to master std missed
Yes yes yes! Ss will WANT to learn more if they are in control! Why not give them some control?!! https://t.co/hhuudpHeky
A3: giving Ss of and ways to learn can alleviate that issue.
some many parts of faculty meetings could just be a shared Google doc/form
Dang it. Got in a fantastic side convo and just missed the last 2 questions! Probably better that way...
A3 same Ts drive cars to work, have smart phone, use budget apps, online banking, email and other laziness inducing tech
the ever changing, 21st century world around us!
You better preach! No to Status Quo! If we are, then we limit our students to the same thing!! Yes Sir!
A3 - What is lazy? As learning gets more student centered and the kids do more of the work ... Im not doing as much "work"
A3: ask what their alternative is... worksheets? Textbook work? Tech opens doors to creativity.
A4: Yes. I forget where I heard this, but..."Good teachers don't cover the standards. They uncover them."
Teach students how to think not content. Provide rigourous, inquiry lessons that create stu grit. https://t.co/FiHCQm3WlC
Yes, teachers will appreciate breaking up the monotony of staff meetings I think https://t.co/Qh4QGlqElk
some many parts of faculty meetings could just be a shared Google doc/form
A4 Yes by preparing tech comfortable Ss that know how to find what they need to answer a Q for jobs that don't exist yet.
Ss are adaptive. If all we are asking is googleAble Qs then we are missing the mark anyways.
A3 the currency is no longer knowing, it's knowing how to find out, and that's not lazy
A4: if you teach at the highest levels of rigor and engagement, the test will take care of itself! https://t.co/rFb9uB8arH
A4 Curriculum standards & expectations should be at the root of all our lessons &tech ed. We have to plan with it in mind
I said that... https://t.co/WrbhuyfxWk
A4: Yes. I forget where I heard this, but..."Good teachers don't cover the standards. They uncover them."
A4 Teach how 2b curios & learn 2 think critically. Then 4 a week b4 test, study format. Felxible thinkers rule the world.
A4: By taking a pro-active stance on drafting the standards themselves. Ts need to be more vocal about the new essentials!
A4 why can technology not help us teach basic skills needed for testing? Ss learn at own pace= ss learn more!
A4. Definitely. This it what tech integration should be. Tech skills developed throughout the standards.
A4: Yes! However meeting standards does not always = passing standardized tests.
A4 integration of tech allows for future ready and standards met. We must be intentional about both https://t.co/pTwwDXVoPh
A4: when Ss create wth new info they truly internalize and learn material. Collaboration is 🔑 chatting makes for learning.
A4 Yes, Not sure how, its not the way we've always done things, maybe collaboration, reverse engineering standards?
A4 If we teach to ALL standards - including tech ...Teach to standards & all test scores follow ⬆️ https://t.co/oCLyKwN1AU
💙 Bradbury. Think he was stressing need for critical thinking, a skill we can def use tech to strengthen.
A4 Absolutely. Pre-assess Be innovative w tech & differentiation 2 personalize Rich authentic assessments=better test score
Transformative Michelle! :) https://t.co/S9ENboc5Bk
what's the hold up?why we arent doing this already. My principal had great ideas for b.o.y
YES! Tech DOESNT replace good teaching but canENHANCE it Use tech to teach standards in better way https://t.co/EPzvhWqggt
Yes. Ans can be learned, even memorized-grit and rigor leads to empowerment & the ability to think 4 oneself.
And doesn't data drive everything?!? Or is that just my school? 😂 https://t.co/mIc3furnfm
A4: I believe the key to a successful learning come from good data collect. Tech can help collect data to master std missed
A4: Definitely! We just need to discover new and engaging ways to allow Ss to learn! Bring out those 21st Century skills!
I agree, Harry Wong preaches if the kids are tired you did your job, https://t.co/f65tYONHWn
A3 - What is lazy? As learning gets more student centered and the kids do more of the work ... Im not doing as much "work"
love this reminder because sometimes in the sciences the number of standards can become overwhelming
I don't know, poverty, institutional racism, language issues are all hard to shake, need more than rigor
Those who are doing the talking/working/thinking are doing the learning! Much better them than us! https://t.co/0c55yt8xcV
A3 - What is lazy? As learning gets more student centered and the kids do more of the work ... Im not doing as much "work"
When they're getting it,great time to observe, ask ?s, think about next steps.Or grab a coffee lol https://t.co/Ufh0TdI42Z
sometimes when the kids are doing, I feel left out. Sometimes they need/want my help, but most are getting it
A4: Tech and standards are not mutually exclusive. Standards don't tell you how something has to be taught.
A4: 4 C's: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creative Problem Solving. These lead to engagement.
A4: don't pay too much attention to 'standards', good teaching+good Ts already meet them. Let others focus on that stuff
A4: What we're doing should meet those standards and provide critical thinking, exposure to experts, widen perspectives.
Rubric, rubric, rubric. Ts cannot have a moving target for Ss performance. Set the standard then teach to it.
Interesting, please elaborate? https://t.co/rmFXHb8ymH
A4: Yes! However meeting standards does not always = passing standardized tests.
I tell my students I should skip outta here every day you should be dragging yourself to the bus exhausted.
A1: Ss need unlimited access 2 tools of culture, those who impede this is plz step down! Peter Grey https://t.co/LtXaRb6O4f
A1: Ss need unlimited access 2 tools of culture, those who impede this is plz step down! Peter Grey https://t.co/6NzRyicGZN
YESSS!! I love this!!! Ss need to strive to be someone Ts can rely on and trust. https://t.co/4kDBTg5qAE
If you are worried about students googling the answers to your questions, you are asking the wrong ones.
A4: I believe we can be so far beyond we never need to worry abt scores. S's Exceed Expectations https://t.co/9J2InTR9I0
It happens to the best of us. Often!
A4: The art of questioning and the value of wrong answers. The media. What it is, how it works, and the choices it makes.
A4 Can't get on board with a one day test determining my Ss' worth. Standards are when made relevant
Its all about balance. For every structured, teacher-guided lesson, I give time afterwards for unstructured student time
Keep on reading the book and applying it to your situation. Youll be amazed at what you come up w/in the end.
There's Jerry to the rescue
A4: Perfect world: Ss can apply what they learn in class to solve any Q. How to get them there? Whole 'nother question.
Set up your students to fail so they can bounce back and succeed. Best growth is failure.
oops - forgot the A4: https://t.co/g0dyDZc2R9
Rubric, rubric, rubric. Ts cannot have a moving target for Ss performance. Set the standard then teach to it.
New study showing a link between poverty stricken schools and failed tech implementation. 😕👎 https://t.co/uuHr2brvky
I don't know, poverty, institutional racism, language issues are all hard to shake, need more than rigor
NOPE me either I do not a single teacher who does. We all have bad days.
A4 until we optimize school days, make assessments more valid, standards more relevant I can't focus too much on them
. get them to ask the questions
We have to insure that kindness does not make them co-dependent -they need to grow to independence https://t.co/NbRleyXvGw
I don't know, poverty, institutional racism, language issues are all hard to shake, need more than rigor
A4 Create Ls that push students to CREATE; require them to USE the info, not just remember it.
I start Math with an open-ended problem-solving challenge. Do a structured lesson, then give unstructured time.
Boom, that's how we do at Tell the DOE! https://t.co/5fv0tNwUWS
A4 Can't get on board with a one day test determining my Ss' worth. Standards are when made relevant
A4 If tech is used effectively, standards will be met, kids will think & build perseverance; kids will be challenged
I agree ... Apparently the old way didn't work very well if most people still "can't do math" https://t.co/BzgH8ZyLzc
A4: Sadly zero tech skills crossover into standardized tsts. Tech is not tested. Even "Science" tsts are just reading tsts.
I don't know what you mean by kindness, I'm talking about addressing these issues at same time
A4: Are these mutually exclusive? Can't we do both at the same time? Teach & meet standards within a future-ready system?
Would love that. I'm a little nervous about my new plan, but once I get going, I'm sure it will be fine.
We need to dispel the "It was good enough for my generation" talk. We also used to ride horses to school.
Teach Ss to be problem finders and hungry for the solution!
A4: Not exactly sure of the map, however standards have to remain flexible to reflect evolution in learning.
Y'all are killing my mobile battery tonight! is lit 2nite!
Whoah, that's incredible!! https://t.co/kG4zkJUxf8
New study showing a link between poverty stricken schools and failed tech implementation. 😕👎 https://t.co/uuHr2brvky
I don't know, poverty, institutional racism, language issues are all hard to shake, need more than rigor
Still have to know what standards are addressed to be legit. My room is very diff. so I get lots of ?s
Hey ya'll 👋🏼. Where are we? 🤔
A2: Ts have individual right to not use EdTech. But Ss have right to decide who they study with, and what/how.
Ummmm DOK 1. No room for that in my classroom. Ss deserve better https://t.co/5xppBhz8yc
If you are worried about students googling the answers to your questions, you are asking the wrong ones.
definitely trying something similar. Want them thinking more about strategies than memorizing algorithms.
Well... donkeys for you and me https://t.co/PkjZQSduNG
We need to dispel the "It was good enough for my generation" talk. We also used to ride horses to school.
It would be crazy AWESOME if your cake was an answer to an question. A5: Delicious!
had some tell me I am not "teaching" because I don't stand and talk all the time ... different type of learning
A5: Put old methods aside & bring new tech ideas to the table. Redraw lessons that can help Ss with the resources you have
Right. When you have standardized data points proving your unorthodox way works, well,it's hard to argue then.
Our kids aren't receiving the same experience simply by placing the same device in their hands... https://t.co/UKJJkzBdWA
I could give you a huge list of "what else is there", it sounds like you don't want to know tho
Yes! I was thinking about how my Ps walked uphill to and from school in the snow. 😂 https://t.co/YMcvZKpLQJ
We need to dispel the "It was good enough for my generation" talk. We also used to ride horses to school.
A4a Yes. We gotta do like.. https://t.co/T1OaSJPDCb .. Lose your mind (how we think/feel about tests now) & reframe..
Dang he is handsome and wise!! https://t.co/xaepiEiahV
If you are worried about students googling the answers to your questions, you are asking the wrong ones.
With no shoes and uphill both ways
Yes I refuse to hold S's back from the success they could be experiencing https://t.co/foDuMdtOiq
Our kids aren't receiving the same experience simply by placing the same device in their hands... https://t.co/UKJJkzBdWA
I agree...We need to address these but lead sts through & over > not be stopped by them (same 💡s?) https://t.co/EifhJHULqc
I don't know what you mean by kindness, I'm talking about addressing these issues at same time
Yep - I've encountered that too, and then the Ss evaluation come in and I smile.
have a friend who had Galaxy tablets 1:1 in his school. just took them out of plastic & handed 2 Ss. What could go wrong?
So much this. So many skills are now obsolete and the new ones need to be recognized and taught. https://t.co/FtTJf90s2K
We need to dispel the "It was good enough for my generation" talk. We also used to ride horses to school.
A5 use the tech to create demonstable data that you can use to improve your approach. Keep making improvements!
A5 most Ts in my building are NOT using tech so I haven't run into this yet
Hint: everything https://t.co/jgC0Xu7EK2
have a friend who had Galaxy tablets 1:1 in his school. just took them out of plastic & handed 2 Ss. What could go wrong?
A4: Let's help Ss be instead of test takers
A4b What exactly might it mean, reframe? Dunno exactly. I suppose it means taking local resources & fashion Qs from ‘em
Have you tried ? So practical & fun to connect math with other classrooms!
I do not think tech is always better. My makerspace is 100% tech free. Hands are great tools. https://t.co/sjTwBumGuN
wasn't implying that Ts shouldn't know what they are just that we shouldn't burden our Ss w/the stress of them
f Thanks. My Ss helped me design it & we're presenting to the school board Thursday about it all. :)
A5 If we as leaders are unwilling to step in when we see bad pedagogy then we shouldn't be leaders. Intervene share BPrac
That makes more sense. Gotcha.
I have iPads & laptops but not used every day I believe tech is enhancement but not necessary https://t.co/sjTwBumGuN
Another reason teaching is an art. https://t.co/g30awuzysZ
A4: Tech and standards are not mutually exclusive. Standards don't tell you how something has to be taught.
A5 Admin should swoop in & require training, mentoring, allow that T to observe others.
Technology does not do harm if Ss are taught safe use & they serve a logical purpose to lessons.
if they ever want to do a hangouts with our design studio , let me know!
WHOA! TIL is much older than I thought he was. Hmmm. https://t.co/1HWXdSukd1
We need to dispel the "It was good enough for my generation" talk. We also used to ride horses to school.
my school prioritized making family wellness center, we found NOT addressing those issues impacted Ss 2 much
A5: Discuss validity. I've had many convos w/Ts about how much more they can do than turn the iPad into a $1000 pencil
I haven't, though I did something similar a couple years ago. Will look into it for this year though, thanks!
A5: Always ask what Ss doing & WHYthey doing that? How is tech use allowing Ss to critically think https://t.co/hekJCN8SRC
A5: Tech must facilitate or evaluate learning. Both avenues should be connected to syllabus or course design.
you have to build a culture of not just with Ts but with Ss and the community. We are building together!
would have rather spent it on other stuff, but we could no longer ignore the elephant in the room
A5: Observing other Ts is a great way to expand base.
A3a Kids & grandkids left Labor Day bbq. Me to latest dad: your kid will grow up knowing zip about tech I knew intimately
A5: I am not sure that would be my place to address it.
when Ss see us paying 2 much attention (teaching explicitly 2 the'standards') they see our stress+it infects
A5Ask Socratic questions inquiring the "Why?" of their implementation. They may come to recognize their own flawed thinking
I DO glisten in the sunlight.
then you have to know rigor itself is not the solution
A6: Formative assessments involving Proprofs and ALEKS. These sites can create enough data differentiate instruction
A3b That attitude means a whole generation of lazy/no work ethic? Don’t think so. Tech opens up possibilities undreamed of
Never got a job because of my bomb test taking skills....oh I didn't even have to tske one. https://t.co/v2EiuLNsvE
A4: Let's help Ss be instead of test takers
I give my SS options tech or no tech a lot of them go no tech.
A5:Everyone has to start somewhere. Keep modeling higher level Ss use theirs will come along.
Save these tweets, and connect with each other this week to plan out the idea.
That's awesome .. Maslow before Blooms https://t.co/fxFVfMvxvz
my school prioritized making family wellness center, we found NOT addressing those issues impacted Ss 2 much
A6 I have developed personalized learning and I'm trying to figure out how to export it to other Ts. It's amazing!
A3c But it takes adults opening up, too. The kids are already there. Change is hard. We tend to stay with what we know.
A5: Create an evaluation tool for effectiveness like experimental design model (Jekinson, 2009) is one reference.
A6 Twitter in the CR, Ss tweet as historical figures under HT, connect with PLN prior get Ss connected with others globally
not the Twilight version.....
This year admin aligned personalized PD groups w instructional rounds to allow T to watch peers practicing new like efforts
A5: Ask ?s about their choice of tech. How did they think it should affect instruction, student learning?
That would be amazing! start thinking about how we can fit this in.
A6: create websites to show mastery of content
Dang it, she stole my answer! https://t.co/bG79VQU1Ep
A5:Everyone has to start somewhere. Keep modeling higher level Ss use theirs will come along.
So tchg families and helping so that learning can take place 💜💜💜 https://t.co/3GPJ4FOyMa
would have rather spent it on other stuff, but we could no longer ignore the elephant in the room
A4: Overly fixating on test scores is symptom of ossified system of education (contra learning) that must be overturned.
That must mean we're both right!
PBL's Podcasting, blogging, but incorp with inquiry & problem-solving questions. Stu-led topics https://t.co/WliBL91BHN
A1 Wild _ss guess: Let the Ss do the heavy lifting whilst Ts facilitate. Maybe ask Ss to mentor Ts along the way?
I agree 100% and i would also add in we fight like we're jousting
.'s tweets have me feeling like I am all out of whack
This is amazing, we should talk more about, would you be willing to write a blog about it? https://t.co/pCGKAD42d8
A6 I have developed personalized learning and I'm trying to figure out how to export it to other Ts. It's amazing!
A6: Creating their own projects to show what they know. Responding to each other's ideas on Google classroom
Being an effective leader is being able to have the difficult discussions.
We must for the sake of whats best for our Ss
A2 Take the individual who opposes tech use to the nearest window and take a good look outside. Why everywhere but school?
A6: I use model for boards and
A^: Be aware of the many ways to connect, collaborate and build on their perspective. Take the walls down.
Save these tweets, reconnect with those who share this week to get more info. Bring ideas to life
pretending all Ts just had to B superstar Ts, even if they were, was not the whole solution
A6: I use to publish Ss technology helpdesk videos 4 others to enroll in
When Ss are in control of their own learning it is amazing how rigorous it becomes. Ss own it & challenge themselves.
Before the night ends, big thank you to fighting through tech hiccups tonight for the good of 😄👍 you the man!
A5 Ask ‘em to coach you on using their methods in your teaching. If you’re right about their harming they’ll figure it out
A5 ask the T top collaborate with you. Acknowledge what's good, and add flavor. Make it palpable https://t.co/PDYYFZbGvE

Do you focus on teaching the mathematical practice standards then? You may like 's work then.
Thank you for a rapid fire engaging chat! Amazing as always!
Thank YOU for joining us!
A6: Student blogging takes many things we do to a more rigorous level, connecting with others using it, even more.
A5 get back to the essential learning of the lesson and see if tech is the best way to access it.
I'll be honest I'm disappointed with this week's chat, I had an off night, we will be better next week! I promise
A6 Wrking on TedEdClub @ my school. Long term goal: have Ss make own TedTalk in class, focus on inquiry & creating product
Thank you PLN insightful & helpful ideas. You rock!!!
It's sad but true that we have become the answer to our country's economic crises ... Yet still not the priority
Shameless plug but I need Ts to talk on my podcast Please let me know if interested!
I think its nice to have a little structure to teach standards, but flexibility to explore
If you do not follow these great educators! You are missing out!

Any other profession they would be fired, if they didn't embrace and utilize the required tools. https://t.co/KTu0Ej3p1T
Sadly I've encountered it in an internship I did a while back. Organization was preoccupied with "tech adverse teachers".
A6 Ss cook pasta, sauce, etc. Create S-sheet for reservations, run restaurant for 1day. All $ to charity.
