Peace #HipHopEd family! Hope everyone is enjoying the break from the classroom and ready to take this #HipHopEd field trip back to '98...i was 15...lol
Hello #HipHopEd family! The global Hip Hop nation is made up of individuals everywhere, connected somehow. A collection of personal narratives makes up our collective history. Please share your memories of 1998.
We will be having a separate chat in August on the influence and impact of "The MisEducation of Lauryn Hill" so tonight we can discuss the year 1998 in totality as well as comment on her album #HipHopEd
In '98, I was 12 years old, 7th grade. Brandy and Monica came out with "The Boy is Mine" and Deborah Cox insisted that "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here." Also, K-Ci and JoJo confused my concept of relationships with "close to me you're like my" every single relative. #HipHopEd
I was a junior in high school, and I was listening to some mainstream music, but was not too familiar with hip-hop until I started dating a guy who was addicted to Bone Thugs n Harmony #HipHopEd
I was in Grade 10 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada (home of Gretzky & the phone). It was the great time of both the hip-hop entrepreneurs #Nolimit, #CashMoney (Juvenille), #Rocafella, and 4 those who went solo to go BIG, namely, @MsLaurynHill

I was only 10 years old and knew very little about hip hop but heard my cousins playing a lot of Bone Thugs, Pac, Biggie, and "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy. #hiphoped
I remember going back to the block in the summer of ‘98 to visit family in the city. Everyone was so amp’d in the hood to be listening to DMX because he was so raw and grimy. #HipHopEd
The process of releasing an album on a major label was a feat in 1998 and #DMX did it twice in the same year. This was unprecedented at the time #HipHopEd

I copped the Capital Punishment CD physical from Skippy White's in central sq cambridge...Got the case taken for Lady Liberty on the inside in Class #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/TgF0QvHVf7#Fresh Intro waz Classic #Beware
1998 I was 27. Was feeling an all-time low in Hip Hop after the golden age had passed. Then the passing of Biggie and Pac created a huge void. The game was up for grabs. The beginning of rappers with featured singers. Rhythm and rap #hiphoped
#HipHopEd 1998 was my freshman year of high school and Jay-Z Hard Knock Life, Lauren Hill's Ex-Factor, and The Lox Money Power Respect were the soundtracks to my life! I think about it now and wonder which songs my Ss feel describe their lives?
In 1998, I heard Da Art of Storytellin' by OutKast and the line "I asked her what you wanna be, she said alive" by Andre 3000 still haunts me #HipHopEd

Perhaps my influences do not sound very HipHop-ish to you, but I feel that to tell the story of how HH expanded, I need to tell you how it crossed the border and what it mixed with until it got to me. @ElGranTony es un fusionero. #HipHopEd
For half Of 1998 I was in China. Gangstarr’s Moment of Truth, Sunz of Man’s The Last Shall be First and Killarmy’s Dirty Weaponry stayed on my CD player. #HipHopEd
1998: The Digital Underground ft. Biz Markie released “The Odd Couple” referencing Rodney King and the LA Rebellion, right on the heels of 1997’s posthumous release of Tupac’s “Hellrazor” referencing Latasha Harlins. V important year for hip hop #hiphoped
Yooo... I was on the exact same tip - and also feel the same way re:my students. That is why I ask them on a constant what music they are on and why #HipHopEd
In 1998 we were questioning how #Tupac continued to have new music come out after his death. Pac said that we weren't ready for a Black President 10 years before Obama won the election (Interesting) #HipHopEd
I remember going back to the block in the summer of ‘98 to visit family in the city. Everyone was so amp’d in the hood to be listening to DMX because he was so raw and grimy. #HipHopEd
#DMX mastered the ability to sincerely provide stories that touched the entire emotional wheel. He could talk about violence and prayer and you believed and were moved by both. Use his work to challenge students to develop their VOICE #HipHopEd
To be honest, I think back in '98, before the internet and all that, up here in the 6ix, at my age, we were still on Tupac and Biggie, almost like they hadn't even died #HipHopEd
I remember my friends and I imagining (remember we were 12) this John Galt/#AtlasShrugged kind of thing where all the best disappeared to some Utopia and Aaliyah just found out where Pac and Biggy went in 2001... #HipHopEd
I remember loving & listening w/ a dropped jaw when I heard @DaRealCanibus 2nd Rnd Knock-out, & being lost in a lyrical cyclone lisnin'2 Can-i-bus. Also, 1st time I heard a dis 2 an artist featured on same track in LL's 4,3,2,1. Connect 2 @kendricklamar in #control#HipHopEd
I was only 3 in 1998 (preservice teacher, sorry haha), but Miseducation has been one of my most played albums and one of the best examples of personal writing I've ever seen. I know you'll go into that album later, but Idk if I'll remember so wanted to jump in now #hiphoped
Last week, discussing 1988 I mentioned how Selena & the Quintanillas used a hip hop beat in a Tex-Mex album for the first time . In 1998, El Gran Silencio brought cumbia & vallenato to the hip hop mix. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/4AZ7A7AV2x
Right. I need to go back and listen to those albums. Because from what I remember, he was a pioneering voice in #mentalhealth and almost splintering the stereotype of what a strong, black man sounded like #HipHopEd
I used to have them make playlists for me! I told them to give me recommendations and then I REALLY listened to them! Lol I learned about NBA YOUNG BOY Lil snupe drake (back in the day) and others that way it helped me to hear Ss stories in a new way #hiphoped
Yooo... I was on the exact same tip - and also feel the same way re:my students. That is why I ask them on a constant what music they are on and why #HipHopEd
I hear you! I get them to make playlist for me as well. Open my apple music and tell em to put their joints strait onto my phone. Can't hate on the music they listen to, it is there turn to tell us what the wave is #hiphoped
I remember hearing "Lost Ones" by #LBoogie and thinking that this is the hardest rhyme and song that combining MCing and Singing in a way that hadn't been done #HipHopEd
In 1998 I developed a love for DJing. I went from blending Biggie and Mary J, to 2018 blending culturally responsive teaching and student relationship-building. All day everyday #HipHopEd
Love Black Star's chemistry with different vocal styles. Mos Def and Talib critically and intellectually examined Black culture, violence in Hip Hop and their influence as MCs without knocking anyone else in the game. #HipHopEd

I was living in New Orleans one year out of undergrad. Miseducation was my album. I know all the words to every song!!! Going to see Lauryn August 17 #HipHopEd
Absolutely. I believe EVERY student brings the value of.their experience to the classroom and they share that experience through music...so I listen. #HipHopEd

Ohh guy. In my 11th Grade Media Arts class, I created my own "high school life" version of "It's So Hard". Got the whole 11th Grade involved in a choreographed school dance, this was before Flash Mobbs... Oh memory lane !!! #HipHopEd
In 1998 you began to see Hip-Hop being integrated into various education settings and breaking down other doors and entering lanes that it hadn't in the past #hiphoped
I was 10 years old in 1998 but I remember my uncle blasting The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The words of Every Ghetto, Every City still remains relevant today. #HipHopEd

Sadly the messages are still relevant but I would suggest aligning a song from today based on theme or similar expression with DMX so the students can make the connection #HipHopEd

ExFactor which is sampled on two major hits right now should be examined in its original form. The question of living for me instead of dying for me is a poignant question today as it ever was #hiphoped

CAN YOU PREACH SIR 🙌 My Ss could not get enough of the music video, the colors, the imagery, relating to the pain in the lyrics. And my boy Ss being like "she fine, who dis" #HipHopEd

Before Kanye did it, Ol’ Dirty Bastard interrupted the Grammy’s in 1998. Both were standing up for Black Excellence. “When it comes to the children, Wu-Tang is for the children. We teach the children.” #hiphoped
Listening to Juvenile 400 Degreez in ‘98 blew my mind! It was possibly the first time I listen to Mannie Fresh and his sick ass use of samples. #HipHopEd
"I'm ready to meet him 'cause where I'm living ain't right
Black hate white, white hate black, it's right back to the same fight
They got us suspecting a war
But the real war is to follow the law of the Lord" #DMX#HipHopEd
BlackStar "Brown Skin Lady" and Goodie Mob "Black Skin" should be introduced to any group that wants to examine relationships, self worth/esteem etc #HipHopEd
Listen...that song is STILL the story of SO MANY women and explores the divide between the love some men show and the love some women need #careformecareformeIknowyoucareforme#HipHopEd

Ah ha, hush that fuss
Everybody move to the back of the bus
Do you want to bump and slump with us
We the type of people make the club get crunk… #HipHopEd
When I copped JayZ's HKL album, and I heard "Big Pimpin'". I had to pull over while driving. The beat was infectious, & @Timbaland gave me a whole new reason to find pride in my East Indian heritage, and made space 4 us in the Hip-Hop game. #HipHopEd
If we are talking 98 we gotta talk about aquemeni with tracks like Rosa parks and Aquemini especially Andre’s second verse how the alien can blend right on in with your kin #HipHopEd
Ooooo! Who could remember the impact that Belly had on the culture!! Hype Williams forever changed the game... dude is a creative genius! Had to sneak out to go see that with friends. #HipHopEd
In 1998, i wasn’t allowed to listen to hip hop. It was seen as too violent or too inappropriate which caused me to miss out on a lot of great art and lessons #HipHopEd
From standin' on the corners boppin'
To drivin' some of the hottest cars New York has ever seen
For droppin' some of the hottest verses rap has ever heard #HipHopEd
Side Note: Prince of Egypt came out that year and Whitney and Mariah gave us that power ballad When You Believe and Boyz II Men did I Will Get There and I stayed crying until 8th grade #HipHopEd
Oh yea for sure it’s an even exchange I educate them on my world and they educate me on theirs. It brings them into the community of learning on some @chrisemdin type stuff #HipHopEd

Well, now, don't you tell me to smile
You stick around I'll make it worth your while
My number's beyond what you can dial
Maybe it's because we're so versatile #HipHopEd
In 1998 the rest of the country was catching up to what they thought was a quick flash instead of movement with dem No Limit Soldiers #MasterP#hiphoped
And the album covers! Let’s not ignore the craft of the cover, the story and arguments made... Moment of Truth cover? Man... prescient as hell #HipHopED
Sure i was able to catch up as a teen but let’s face it, it’s nothing like listening to art when it first drops. That’s one of the few times the community comes together. Those school yard discussions were full of the latest reviews and a kid could miss out. #HipHopEd
These chats are for as @Nas said, taking a trip down memory lane but also realizing that things haven’t changed as much as we often think they have #HipHopEd
My education was branded as "bicultural", yet... I craved connection with English speakers that did not oppress us with linguistic imperialism. Deliquent Habits helped. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/zHfZCwrB3G (Notice OG's Control Machete shirt!)
I’m willing to bet everyone who mentioned a song or album on here can remember the exact spot they listened to it and can share an experience about that song #HipHopEd
What moved you 20 years ago can be used to present yourself to your students in a more sincere manner and create the space for them to do the same #HipHopEd
Do you think that this was a good idea or bad. Do you think listening to hardcore rap would have changed the projectory of your life? Just curious. #hiphoped
"You'ze a gangsta! No I'm not!" Something about Quick. He was from the hood but never really put himself out like a big time gangsta. #staytruetoyourself#HipHopEd
Can we also talk about how creative the artist were in 1998? Video shoot budgets were not cheap because they took pride in storytelling across all forms #HipHopEd
I remember playing little league football in ‘98 when Ruff Ryder’s Anthem dropped & we use to bang our pads to that beat & sing the chorus on game day. #ThankYouX#HipHopEd
I know I am a year behind but, I was still rocking to Luchini ... that said, by 98, me and Hip Hop has to go through a separation (of course there was Layurn Hill). By this time I was really exploring acid jazz and bro soul. #hiphoped
It’s actually that reason alone why I allow my students to listen to their music when we work and dance to it. We can find or edit a clean version because they deserve to have moments like this too in the future, even if I think it’s trash 😂 #HipHopEd
@AlyssaBigbee re: videos, b4 becoming and educator, @chrisemdin ,I wanted to be a video director, because of the mini stories being told with faces&bodies that looked like OURS. #hiphoped
So... I am from Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, the land of Control Machete. (I am also from Santa Catarina but Cartel de Santa had not recorded anything yet in 1998). https://t.co/VcTHa05eO7#HipHopEd
I actually got caught dancing to Ruff Ryders anthem at a cookout (it was lit nothing like the nutcracker) and immediately was met with the “do you know your math like you know these lyrics?” PS i hate when folks do that. #HipHopEd

Reminds me of when Black Star sampled 'Style Wars' in "Respiration." It cuts to the root and double meaning of hip hop that is perceived as crime or beauty. #HipHopEd
"I just lost 100 pounds. I'm trying to live!" Although this record was released in '99, I'm sure Big Pun's weight lost journey took place in '98. #healthwellness#HipHopEd
Year 2 teaching. I was listening to Tribe and the Jurassic 5 LP. My kids were all on No Limit label. Albums and tracks traded with so many. I learned so much from my students. #HipHopEd
1998 was the year I discovered independent labels like Soulsides/Quannum in the Bay Area and Rhymesayers in the Twin Cities. They changed the way I listened to hip hop/rap. Also listened to a lot of Lauren Hill, Tupac, Biggie, & Black Star. Oh and Eminem, Jay-Z (esp. HKL)
DMX - Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood ... (Slippin) ; The Urban Community And Mental Health Of Men Constantly Downplayed Or Ignored. We As Educators Need To Become More Acclimated With Mental Illness Especially Depression #HipHopEd

Funny story, I was teaching at a catholic school and it was time for free dance and a student asked for “Hard Knock Life” i assumed he wanted Annie until I played it and he said “we not this one! I want the cool one” #HipHopEd
1998 gave us, Vol. 2 HKL, It’s Dark & Hell Is Hot, Flesh of my Flesh Blood of My Blood, Capital Punishment, Aquemini... Money, Power, Repsect... Moment of Truth, confessions of Fire, don cartega, N.O.R.E., 400 Degreez... Nuff Said #HipHopEd
