The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
To get us started, please introduce yourself to the group. Also, for no particular reason other than my curiosity, share your favorite breakfast cereal. #INeLearn
R1: I believe that students must be disciplined to complete blended/online work. There are so many distractions that they can get into online otherwise. #INeLearn

I can give my Ss online tasks in class and the majority of my time is keeping them from @YouTube-ing or playing games. There really should be studies done on Ss who have 1:1 devices and how they spend their time. #INeLearn
R1: Students need to have motivation, time management, and familiarity with technology that is being used! #INeLearn ... sorry I’m late, Caity from Mishawaka and I love Lucky Charms!

I have some ideas about this, but I'd love to hear what others have to say. This is a genuine concern that so many people have and experience. Tips? #INeLearn

R1: In general, the 2018 classroom is requiring students to take on responsibility for their own learning. Blended or otherwise. So the culture change or mindset change, however we want to think about it, is key. #inelearn
Let's divert from my original set of Qs. We'll get back to them. @LCHS_Bio brought up a really good point. How do we handle off-task behavior and help students stay focused on the task at hand? #INeLearn (@mrg_3 don't get mad that I'm off topic LOL)
I'm a student from IUPUI and was recently asked to participate in a Twitter chat. I chose this Twitter chat because when I took my first online class I had no idea what to expect. While taking my first online class I learned that staying on track is very important. #INeLearn
Truth. Speaking as a guy who for a long time taught math in a computer lab (pre-1:1) as well as PLATO/credit-recovery math, that was a monumental, daily battle. #INeLearn
It requires management of the classroom. I don’t want to lock Ss down on what they can and can’t do (ie filters), but it is difficult. Is the assignment to boring or too rigorous? #DigCit? There are so many favors. #INeLearn
I've spent a lot of time looking at this data in our district. We do have tools to help teachers filter within their classes, but that doesn't necessarily proactively solve much. Also, I can't help but point out that we can work distractedly, too. #INeLearn
This is a great one to join for your first chat! You will find caring, sharing educators here. I feel fortunate to have met many of them F2F. #INeLearn
The cliche answer is "be more engaging than YouTube." And that's easy to say, but let's collectively roll our eyes for a second. #INeLearn
Setting a timer as a visual reminder of the amt of time to complete a task helps. Also, building in phone breaks was a recent idea I heard.
Sometimes it helps to give daily "deadlines" or goals. If they feel pushed to reach that point by the end of each period, they often self-regulate their behavior because they don't have time to be off task. Oh, and @goguardia helps, too. #inelearn
Hi there! I'm jumping in late to the conversation. I found the same issue at this time last year. I gamified my blended learning this semester and my students are much more engaged and motivated to stay on task. #INeLearn
Not a one size fits all approach. Even as adults, we are constantly shifting our attention from one thing to another. What else are you doing right now? Tips: explicit lessons on mindfulness, model of expectations, consistent feedback, accountability partner in class #INeLearn

I'm big into "gentle reminders", having found long ago that I will always lose a public power struggle w/a student. That said, I'm willing to use whatever tools my district provides to remotely control a screen if it comes to that. But I'd rather hook'em with my lesson. #INeLearn

I saw a study today where socioeconomics plays a huge role in the off task behavior. Ss of low SES tend to use their tech inappropriately because they cannot necessarily use it at home for entertainment purposes. Honestly, I don’t agree with this. Thoughts?? #INeLearn
Avoiding the power struggle is so important. I love listening to @CYoungEdTech & @edtechmarcus talk about Super Power FX app &how they would use it to "throw fireballs" at groups that were off task. Something as silly as that can shift the attitude about redirection. #INeLearn

I'm with you on this one Stephen. I want my students so engaged and excited about their task that they aren't concerned with what's on Youtube. Allowing students agency and promoting ownership goes a long way to this end. #INeLearn
A few years ago I got turned on to Musical Cues by Matt Vaudrey. A tune of a certain length is attached to every task. Music's done? Task is done. Move on. I think he keeps a shared google folder on his blog. #INeLearn
I think I've read that as well. If there is a correlation that is found, what is an alternate cause?
That's where I read the suggestion for designated breaks, actually. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. #INeLearn

I'm not so sure I agree either. Only 1 of my 32 fourth graders is without internet. Their internet history at home shows plenty of youtube and games ;) #INeLearn

First started using them in readers workshop now use them with blended learning. Partners collaboratively review expectations, set goals, and periodically check in to ensure partner is on track. At the end, reflect by evaluating their performance & setting goals #INeLearn
Q2: Assuming you are in a blended classroom or in a traditional setting preparing for eLearning days, how do you teach students some of the skills/characteristics mentioned in A1 (self-regulation, self-advocacy, trouble-shooting, etc.)? #INeLearn
I’d be interested in knowing more about the study. I suspect there are a multitude of factors. Parenting needs to be considered too. What are the restrictions at home; what type of mindfulness has/hasn’t been taught. #IneLearn

That’s the same article. I think breaks from 1:1 is very important. I believe it was talking about screen time as well. A group of former @Google people. I agree with breaks. I don’t think SES has a thing to do with it. It’s a societal issue; not money. #INeLearn

R2: with trouble shooting, I think we have to look at opportunities throughout the year to work on these skills. They will arise and be annoying, yet important for the FAIL lesson. It’s just like working a problem in math or making revisions to a paper for ELA #INeLearn
R2: Early in the school year, I use learning continuums to help my Ss self assess their work and set goals to improve. This mindset is carried throughout the year. My Ss feel empowered when they make decisions about their own learning. #INeLearn
R2 Test run a similar activity when you're with you Ss. Also, I love to tell Ss, "You get one question; make sure it's a good one." Ss obviously know I will help them if they really need it, but this encourages them to think and problem-solve before asking for help. #inelearn

Concrete examples of task breakdown are always helpful. Look for the student that is a positive deviant. Use that student to share how he or she time manages. Empower students to connect to each other! #INeLearn
R2: I also designate a few students to be "tech support." When working online, Ss ask tech support for trouble shooting advice. This frees me up to teach small groups. #INeLearn
R2: Right now our big focus is training students to use Canvas as their landing point for every class. Then when we do go to eDays, they already know all their procedures/links/docs will be there. PLTW is definitely leaning towards building self-sufficiency too. #inelearn
R2 Read research on how your brain reacts to tech; the failing of multitasking; the engineered manipulation by tech to build awareness and be cognizant of your actions. Test out breaks, screen settings, turning off notifications, etc #INeLearn

I've also seen @teachforthewin create a Google Doc with a table for students to ask questions. She originally created it so that she could answer virtually while meeting with small groups. What was cool to see was the students actually getting on and helping eachother #INeLearn
R2: next year I’m working on teaching my Ss skills for 4Cs before we start anything new. It might take 2 wks. I can incorporate the #DigCit skills, troubleshooting, self regulation, on task behavior early and set the expectations. #INeLearn
SAY IT! :D
One and done isn't going to be super successful. It has to be part of the culture and routine.
That does not mean all online, but that does mean blending and regular meaningful use of online learning. #INeLearn#preachsistah
This learning progression is for the "theme." The third section from the left is our grade level goal. The continuum helps students identify what they can do to improve their work one step at a time. #inelearn#progress#growthmindset

I see this with myself. Someone had to suggest to me to close my email when working on a project. Amazing how that one common sense suggestion changed the way I work. #INeLearn
Digital access should be a regular thing that Ts and Ss learn to manage, but online learning is something more. What “extra” skills are necessary—the ability to persist when frustrated for example is more challenging when there isn’t a teacher in the physical space. #INeLearn
For real. This is definitely the way the @ValpoHS411 tech coaches are training us. If we're gonna ask a student to use an app/site at home by themselves, they should have already had a chance to use it in class together with us. #INeLearn
Q3: What about fully online students or once an eLearning day has started? How do you teach those success skills when your learners are remote? #INeLearn
R2: demonstrating learning can be a choice also. When we give voice and choice, engagement increases. Setting tasks for Ss, creating a real life learning target, etc. remember, it’s not teaching with tech, it’s teaching. Same with working, engagement, etc. #INeLearn
The same could be said about TV, soda, etc. it does not have to result in addiction if you are armed with knowledge and make informed choices #INeLearn
Knowing where to look for assistance when you're stuck is an important skill. That's something T's can definitely model/demonstrate, as well as helping to organize some resources. #INeLearn
A3) I try to provide them with a variety of tools they can use to help them work with digital materials (annotation, for example) and create content. Share suggestions for tackling difficult content/texts. #INeLearn
Exactly. Discussions of blended learning is where we currently are with this. I also hear @micheeaton in my head talking about how we can't simply expect to replicate what we do in a traditional classroom online.
Great question! There are definitely strategies that can model/develop these skills. #INeLearn Some of which apply to the physical learning space, and some unique to online. #INeLearn
R3: the other thing I think schools do a really poor job with is creating independent learners. We teach kids to sit, follow instructions, do this, do that. If we teach the ability early for Ss to push boundaries for learning, I think we get higher enegagement, maybe #INeLearn
I've noticed so much variety in what my Ss produce. I mean, some of that is to be expected but wonder if part of it is, since fully online, they don't know exactly what other Ss are doing so they are freer to take things in different directions, go in more depth. etc. #INeLearn

@LCHS_Bio I am hoping to do tech-tuesdays with my freshman bio students next year as we go 1:1. How do you plan on transitioning from tech training back to regular bio? #inelearn
This is why I'm passionate about personalized learning, but it needs to start young. I think too often we begin to think about it in high school online classes, after students have learned the "game." #INeLearn Make advocating for yourself as a learner the school norm instead.

This is what I'm counting on as our MS kids (and eventually K-5s) come to me already living in 1:1 for years. If we're doing 1:1 right, (4Cs, knocking down walls) I think my classes are going to look a lot different 5 years from now. #INeLearn
What an interesting observation. Do you see any characteristics or traits in common among your students who you see as being freer to approach something in their own way? #INeLearn
I always do a beginning unit on scientific method that then leads into biochem. I’m gonna do the tech stuff to help bring in sci method. There you go!! #INeLearn
Q4 (calling another audible): Online learning can be leveraged to personalize the experience for students. How do you help students advocate for their own needs and interests online? Does that take specific training or instruction? #INeLearn
My goal is always to make independent critical thinkers. But this takes patience on the teacher's part because some Ss want right now answers. #INeLearn
I knew this group would absolutely crush R3. There are time when I know to hang up and listen for the answer. This is one of those times. #powerhouse#inelearn
Not really aside from general inquisitiveness. I don't get a lot of background info on my Ss. Some of them just take a class or two w/ us while others do whole diploma program. Some have been homeschooling & others come from traditional school. #INeLearn

A4) In my feedback to Ss, I ALWAYS include a line about contacting me with any questions or concerns. Still get some Ps who contact me instead of Ss (think HS Ss should at least try to do this themselves at first). #INeLearn
R4: It takes a mind shift for our Ss to advocate for themselves- they are so used to just being told what they need. I promote advocacy by having my students determine what level of support they need during our math workshop- w/ teacher, online, or peer support. #INeLearn
Simple things even with young learners can help...
Entrance tickets (instead of exit tickets). Self-graded and then have students choose their activity (teacher small group, online reteaching, enrichment, etc.) based on their performance. #INeLearn
This comes dangerously close to a pet peeve: labeling online learning as personalized. There are so many levels of personalized. Sadly, much is “stock” personalized. @micheeaton brings up a vital need-students need to know it’s okay to advocate for themselves. #inelearn
R4: audible on Q4 @ 9:48 pm? Dang! The opportunities we create for Ss have to be “vague” enough to provide Ss with the opportunity for creativity and abstract thinking. With that, we need to have Ss find the appropriate room that fits their desired outcome. #INeLearn
I think that likely is a factor. It's interesting that some Ss who really dive deep into material, mention talking w/ their parents about what they're studying, even having disagreements w/ them in terms of interpretation of historical events. #INeLearn
R4: In my high school classroom, I model the difference between advocating for oneself and complaining. How to phrase concern. How to talk to a teacher. How to ask questions appropriately. #INeLearn
R4 I think we have to emphasize early that it's ok to learn differently. Young students are so concerned with being like their peers. Not only do we need to acknowledge the validity of their learning style, we need to teach them to advocate for themselves EARLY ON. #inelearn
Michelle is tempting me to bring out my soapbox. Personalized learning is NOT software you buy. It's not adaptive content. It has nothing to do w technology.
It has to do with STUDENTS, the real life people sitting in your classrooms &putting them in the drivers seat. #INeLearn

I think if we are deliberate with our strategies with tech usage, 4Cs, etc, it give Ss the opportunity to test those skills through a scientific method project (I have the kids create a lab activity) and report. #INeLearn
R4: In my high school classroom, I model the difference between advocating for oneself and complaining. How to phrase concern. How to talk to a teacher. How to ask questions appropriately. #INeLearn
Soapboxes unite! We do need to teach our Ss it’s okay to say if something isn’t working for them. It may just be that their stuck and talking about it can help them see a solution. If they think that The teacher or the tool is right, they assume it’s their problems #INeLearn
WU) I'd like to add a vodcast type of thing to each of my lessons where I walk Ss through how they could use a tech tool in part of the lesson or highlight a particular historical thinking skill. This is for fully online & asynch courses. #INeLearn
Haha yes! Last year, I had a student that wanted to talk to another teacher about his grade and I made him talk to me first and pretend I was that teacher. Then I gave him tips about his word choice and tone. #INeLearn
WU) I'd like to add a vodcast type of thing to each of my lessons where I walk Ss through how they could use a tech tool in part of the lesson or highlight a particular historical thinking skill. This is for fully online & asynch courses. #INeLearn
WU: Timely feedback on online work is so important! If too much time passes, students can lose momentum and interest in their learning. Using a variety of tools is also essential to keep students from disengaging. #INeLearn
W/U: PLTW is definitely slipping this skill into lessons this year. Once or twice they have called for students to search for the "how-to" on their own, using whatever resources, rather than having it spoon-fed by me. I'm 100% on board. #inelearn
WU: We have to be deliberate in our expectations and yet allow plenty of flexibility with our Ss in their creativity. Things can’t and won’t look the same either. #INeLearn
I’m bummed I missed the first part of the discussion, but I think it’s good to go long and not feel like you need to fill the hour with a list of Qs. #INeLearn It’s all good.
