#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to . Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
We want to hear your thoughts on Elementary School Badge earning. Plz include in your tweets
Looking forward to today - Elementary School Badges
Hola Rich! Excited to learn with you this afternoon!
A1 -State history project. In CA 4th grd Missions Prjct. Evidence ties to pic of complete project perhaps? & 1st-3rd place?
I'm Noah in Denver. Big believer in Badges to credential achievement, add to ss narratives. Work on https://t.co/sRB7uMvoVu
Hola Lloyd! Great to have you here. Love that idea!
Q1: What can/should be badged in K-5? Any examples to share?
I'm Rich in Santa Barbara - I work with K12 educators using digital badges to recognize competencies
A1: I think we should credential ss in anything we can that helps capture skills/achievements missing from report cards
In , K-5 ss can earn 26 Badges. Dist determines definition, Ts decide on criteria, evidence https://t.co/lUeX7lpmrR
A1: Student skills, knowledge & experience are things that could be represented by digital badges to communicate competencies
Agree! Any cool K-5 examples you've seen in the CUE community? https://t.co/pJKrwvIez6

I'm a big fan of how gamified his 3rd grade math curriculum. Ex: ss earn Badge after defeating Count Subtracula
A way to create greater meaning around what students know & can do- to better represent themselves
We are also reaching out to groups like Junior Achievement to crosswalk their elem curriculum to Badges Elem ss can earn...
Second question coming up...
Q2: Who sees/cares about K-5 Badges? Who is the audience?
Can some be awarded simply through observation in the classroom for motivational purposes?
Extra context to Q2: ss in HS can show their Badges to colleges and employers...who is audience in K-5?
A2: K-5 badges are most valuable to students and parents as recognition of achievement.
Great question! I say why not? Esp if it is recognizing something that isn't already on report cards...
I wonder if these could be somehow incorporated into something like school loop for parents to see?
Yes! I'd say motivation and recognition are the main values here.
Beyond ss and parents, I've heard Ts say that seeing incoming ss' Badges helps them know more about them b4 school
Can't wait for Fall CUE (2 wks) to get an update on new badging projects in CA this school year. I'll report back
I love idea of using Badges as a communication tool for parents...can help inform "what'd you do today?" convo
agreed, they can also serve as info for future teachers of K5
These responses also speak to benefit of physical representations of Badges for ss to have, hold onto and share w parents
Feel free to linger on q2, also consider how do we explain Badges to youngest learners...
Great idea! Potential for parents to earn badges too? https://t.co/ZGNSbS4AQx

Hi Ben! Great update about the work w/ secondary ss & digital badges by at the SoCal Badge Symposium
Big fan of including parents as earners. Huge potential to support culture of Badging in a district
Already time for third question...
Q3: How do we view role of evidence attached to Badges in K-5?
So parents can accumulate badges along with students? Interesting idea.. https://t.co/XRl4YSSCr9
Big fan of including parents as earners. Huge potential to support culture of Badging in a district
A3: As much as I believe in evidence, if ss + parents only audience, is it necessary? Skip evidence to solve privacy concerns?
FYI, next week we're on YouTube hanging w of Mouse and Parsons School to learn about a collab w Badges + admissions
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
A3- if district wide it serves as a record for students across grades as well. points out those minor things lost in grading?
A4: Evidence has the ability to turn a traditional grade into a clear & powerful statement about what Ss can do=empowerment
A4: When Badging in K-5, seek ways to incl families, possibly as earners to foster culture of Badging
THIS! https://t.co/T14ixOM5cD
A3- if district wide it serves as a record for students across grades as well. points out those minor things lost in grading?
A4 - Important to include all stakeholders in evaluation and celebration around badges in k-5
I'd add to this that Badges follow ss so if they transfer schools, those achievements not lost either
