The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
Hi Everyone! I’m VERY excited to be here. I'm an academic librarian at WTAMU There are a few valuable articles @karleeav and I have found through our research and we’ll be sharing those throughout the chat tonight #txlchat#hs2college
Q1 Preparing S's for the college transition occurs throughout a child’s K-12 career. As librarians have u established collaborations with other librarians? If so, what were the results of those collaborations and what did those collaborations look like? #txlchat#hs2college
A1 A librarian from @HCCDistrict and I collaborated to show our students how to access the college’s databases, do searches, and save files to the cloud. The local library is great about sending flyers with monthly events which I share on our Twitter account. #txlchat
Hello from Lubbock, TX. I am excited to be joining you all for my very first #txlchat! I have enjoyed working with @thebookinator and so many amazing school librarians! Excited to hear what everyone is doing to support #hs2college
A1 As a HS librarian, I invited academic librarians to speak to Ss about the college experience. As an academic librarian, I have been a guest reader at elem reading celebrations & a judge at BOB. All excellent experiences! #txlchat#hs2college
Thank you for being here tonight! Judi checking in from Tucson, Arizona. Looking forward to yet another evening of sharing and learning on #txlchat Good evening, All.
A1: I have collaborated with the public library but unfortunately my experience with the local community college is limited to them sharing fliers for accessing resources. :( I'd love to collaborate with some academic librarians though - what a great way to prep Ss! #txlchat
Q1 Preparing S's for the college transition occurs throughout a child’s K-12 career. As librarians have u established collaborations with other librarians? If so, what were the results of those collaborations and what did those collaborations look like? #txlchat#hs2college
A1 As an academic librarian I have worked with school librarians around my region to help align standards and worked to help all students gain info lit skills to make #hs2college easier! #txlchat
#txlchat A1 We've had our district librarian meetings at our local community college South Texas College @STCPR . We've also visited UTRGV and their special archives collection.
#txlchat inspired by @technolibrary Foote, Carolyn. “Building Success beyond High School with Career-and College-Ready Literacies.” Knowledge Quest 44.5 (2016): 56–60. Find it in TexQuest https://t.co/whsuSduFD2
A1: I #collaborate with our middle school librarian to be sure that our 5th grade Ss are prepared to enter middle. Would love more ideas on how an academic librarian could #collaborate with me #txlchat
A1 When I was a high school librarian, librarians in our district met w/ instructional librarians at the University of Arizona to discuss Ss info literacy learning. I wish we had also met w/Pima Community College librarians. #txlchat
A1: a couple of years ago, the fab librarians at @AngeloState had me come share how I taught research, so they could have a base for expanding. It helped all of us do better! #txlchat
Q2 How could an established collaborative relationship help with the K-12 to college transition for students? #txlchat please add this hashtag #hs2college
A2 Collaboration lets the high school librarian know which skills need the most work before students leave high school. The academic librarian can get a better understanding of where students are coming from and which skills they have mastered in K-12. #txlchat
#txlchat I've nominated two staff members from the STC Library for South Texas Coalition Excellence in Librarianship award. I've partnered and co-taught lessons with distance librarians for dual enrollment classes.
A1: participating in professional associations is a great way to meet academic librarians. Having a friendly relationship makes collaboration much easier!
#txlchat
A2 All parties involved connect with the “go to” people at all levels and that makes it a WIN for Ss. Ss understand that an academic librarian is there to help them just like their school librarian. #txlchat#hs2college
Q2 How could an established collaborative relationship help with the K-12 to college transition for students? #txlchat please add this hashtag #hs2college
I think if you mention something specific you need/want from the academic librarians when you first contact them, it will be easier to start collaborating. #TxLChat
A2 The article Building Success beyond High School with Career and College Ready Literacies offers suggestions for collaborations between school and academic libraries. https://t.co/5hnU5wmxtW#txlchat#hs2college Great Ideas!

#txlchat A1 personal visit to college or univ that partners with my HS - Kilgore college library would at least put a face & help with the vision for where to begin for my Dual Credit kiddos
A2 If students are already familiar with the library/librarian/databases then they already have one step closer to feeling comfortable and successful. #txlchat
A2 Although Ss from different K-12 schools may have had different info lit learning experiences, shared expectations can help more Ss succeed & help librarians across grade levels/institutions develop shared vocabulary/expectations & strategize solutions 2 Ss challenges. #txlchat
A1 I’ve been learning from academic librarians to help prep our students for the next level. @karleeav shared a great resource with me that I’ve been able to use with our HS students. #txlchat
I'm excited to see several articles mentioned tonight. I think too often we focus on collaborating w/ public libraries in the summer but forget about what happens when students leave K-12 for good. #txlchat
#txlchat#hs2college Students grow relationships and see connectedness. I think beyond collaboration as a high school librarian I can create an environment that saturates the message of post-secondary readiness. My library is decorated with college banners.
Q3 The 2017 National Survey of Student Engagement reports “49% of 1st yr students spend up to 5 hours on assigned reading each week.” What can be done to help high school students build their reading stamina so they are ready for this jump in outside reading? #txlchat#hs2college
A1 I’ve been learning from academic librarians to help prep our students for the next level. @karleeav shared a great resource with me that I’ve been able to use with our HS students. #txlchat
A1.) I have partnered with Aissa Martinez & Jesus Campos from @STCPR (local community college) library to assist Dual Enrollment students with Orientations, coursework, and research assistance. #txlchat
A3 Finding nonfiction books on topics that resonate with students are a great way to get them reading and building stamina. So learn who you students are and what they’re interested in. #txlchat
I just had an idea - I bet your counselors have data on which colleges your graduates attend. Maybe get that from them and reach out to their librarians, as well as local cc and university librarians.
#txlchat
A2: Even if Ss are going to a diff college/univ, they will already understand some of the resources and how they are similar: streamlined experience! #txlchat
Q2 How could an established collaborative relationship help with the K-12 to college transition for students? #txlchat please add this hashtag #hs2college
A3 Ss need to build up their stamina at all levels so when they get to HS, there isn’t such a jump in stamina needs when going to college. We need buy in from admin & Ts in all subjects regarding this issue and their help in encouraging reading. #txlchat#hs2college
A1 I’ve been learning from academic librarians to help prep our students for the next level. @karleeav shared a great resource with me that I’ve been able to use with our HS students. #txlchat
A2 Simply knowing what to expect, taking away some of the unknown is a huge step in prepping students to move to the next level, whether it’s elementary to MS, MS to HS, or HS to college. #txlchat
Brilliant move @technolibrary for increasing communication and understanding between K-12 and university librarians! Yes, to shared committees at the local level (as well as state and national levels). #txlchat
A3 I love the idea of independent reading in school to build stamina. At my last school, English classes all started with 10-15 mins of SSR, my current middle school ELA classes have one day per week where students read independently. #txlchat
A3 Read read read!!! Students need to be reading a variety of texts on a regular basis in ALL subject areas! It takes parents, teachers, and librarians working together! #txlchat#hs2college
The article Ready or Not Recognizing and Preparing College-Ready Students by Springer, Wilson & Dole suggests four skills that students need to be ready for college level reading #txlchat#hs2college
A3: Ss need time to just READ - anything! HS teachers regularly feel like they don't have time to dedicate this but it is so IMPORTANT to build up their stamina! Last year, I created mobile book displays on carts that were set up in classrooms 4 quick access! #txlchat
Q3 The 2017 National Survey of Student Engagement reports “49% of 1st yr students spend up to 5 hours on assigned reading each week.” What can be done to help high school students build their reading stamina so they are ready for this jump in outside reading? #txlchat#hs2college
A3-this is a tough one. Sometimes Ss are heavily involved in extra-curricular activities. Former Ss sharing challenges like these drive the point home #txlchat
I'm excited to see several articles mentioned tonight. I think too often we focus on collaborating w/ public libraries in the summer but forget about what happens when students leave K-12 for good. #txlchat
#txlchat#hs2college A3 Encouraging reading across the curriculum. Provide lessons and collaborations with humanities and STEM courses. Highlight these books and not just popular YA Lit.
A1: We collaborate with the counselor @CallejoLibrary . She has her lessons in the library. For Ed. Go Get It Week, she talked with the students about college, showed them a video of a campus tour, and when the S's got excited, explained that the time to plan is now. #txlchat
Q4 The article Learning the Ropes states that coming up with keywords and filtering through irrelevant results are the top two most difficult research tasks for college freshman. What can be done at all grade levels to help students learn these skills? #txlchat#hs2college
#txlchat#hs2college Students grow relationships and see connectedness. I think beyond collaboration as a high school librarian I can create an environment that saturates the message of post-secondary readiness. My library is decorated with college banners.
A3 Reading stamina requires Ss to be experienced w/challenging text above their reading proficiency level. #coteaching reading comprehension strategies during inquiry learning helps shore up Ss reading toolkits. Better readers can better handle greater reading workloads. #txlchat
With this, I go back to my elem days and think of sentence stems and open-ended questions posted around the library. A nonfiction book club could work, too. #txlchat
A4 One trick I learned recently is connecting keywords to hashtags in your lessons. For some reason, Ss who are struggling with the concept of keywords are able to grasp that hashtags and keywords are basically the same thing. #txlchat#hs2college
Our HS Librarians have Ss do this activities w/Seniors. They visit their college library or public library. Navigating successfully w/someone they know builds a foundation #txlchat
A3 Communication is key. We can’t make them believe, but we can communicate. We can also help our Ts identify college-appropriate resources that expose students to academic content. #txlchat
#txlchat#hs2college A4 Practice, practice, practice....like athletes develop muscle memory-scholars develop brain power. First and foremost role model and initial instruction-large group, small group, and one to one.
A4 Accessing and navigating databases and knowing how to filter results are very important skills. Boolean searches and using the advanced search features in search engines help narrow down results, too, 1/2 #txlchat
Yes! We ALL have skin in the game no matter what type/level of librarian you are. That's what we have to make sure everyone understands. Shout it from the mountain tops!! #txlchat#hs2college
A4: Using dictionaries in elementary to do #keyword searches is in a librarian’s #wheelhouse This is a basic but necessary skill to teach #txlchat#hs2college
A3.) Students can assist reading comprehension & retention through chunking of text, sketchnoting, etc. Additionally, students need to read nonfiction to build that stamina required for textbooks. #txlchat
Agreed! Building background knowledge (reading comprehension strategy) and motivation (when texts and tasks are relevant to Ss) = > reading success! #txlchat
Q5 For many, an academic library is a large, intimidating, often scary place. What can be done at the elementary, middle and/or high school level to lessen students’ anxiety about using an academic library? #txlchat please add this hashtag #hs2college
A4: we have developed some templates for our teachers to help students with this using diagrams in Canva. I can share them but on cell right now and don’t have it handy but you can message me #txlchat
A5 Take Ss to tour the library. We frequently have groups of elem Ss coming through on tours. Also, invite an academic lib to your school or event so students start making the connection that there are librarians there to help them when they get to college. #txlchat#hs2college
A5 Tell Ss many of the databases I show them are ones they will use in college . Collaborating with teachers to take students on field trips to local colleges/universities, chatting with academic librarians would be a good way to ease the transition, too. #txlchat
You know that week at the end of the year when seniors are killing time? I go to English classes and share college websites-it’s my nerdy parting gift. #txlchat
Yes! In the articles @karleeav and I have read for our research it's all about constant modeling by educators in all subjects, not just the English teachers. #txlchat#hs2college
#txlchat#hs2college A4 Practice, practice, practice....like athletes develop muscle memory-scholars develop brain power. First and foremost role model and initial instruction-large group, small group, and one to one.
A5 I love hosting students in my library! Looking forward to seeing @sarahjfloyd and her students next week! A visit to an academic library while in K12 can help decrease the intimidation factor. #txlchat#hs2college
A4: I #collaborate with Ts on my elementary campus and teach Ss how to use keywords when searching. We also teach them how to identify reliable sources. #hs2college#txlchat
A5 Field trips to academic and public libraries and visits from librarians serving those communities can lower Ss anxiety when they continue post-K12 education. Recognizing a place and a face (or two) increases confidence. #txlchat
A5: Librarians are here to HELP! Ss need to know this and they'll be less inclined to shy away! Also, all levels really need to teach the basics - organization, OPAC, resources - Ss need to be able to have a starting point! #txlchat#hs2college

#txlchat#hs2college A5 Annually we host a college panel. I partner with one of our counselors to bring recent SHS grads back to speak to current hs students. We ask them to share their experiences including housing, tutoring, instruction, and the library.
A5: As many times as I can we use databases for research and I try to show them how they can use it to cite sources and find reliable websites. #txlchat#hs2college

A5: I teach even my youngest learners to be independent users of the library. I think this truly helps after they leave me and head off to middle school, and I hope they keep those skills through their life #hs2college#txlchat
Yes! to setting expectations that all Ss, including elementary/middle school kids, will continue their education post-k12! We can't start this conversation or begin to build these connections too early/too soon! #txlchat
A4.) I confess I was having difficulty getting this point across to some students. Kelly Hoppe’s idea is heaven sent. Thank you for sharing, @thebookinator! #txlchat
A4 One trick I learned recently is connecting keywords to hashtags in your lessons. For some reason, Ss who are struggling with the concept of keywords are able to grasp that hashtags and keywords are basically the same thing. #txlchat#hs2college

Q6 What sort of “outside of the box” thinking needs to take place by school and academic librarians to make the HS to college transition better for students? #txlchat#hs2college
A5: When I teach research to Jrs and Srs, I tell them they will have the same lesson in college--but they will be ahead since they will know how to research. Just knowing they will go as a class is helpful. #txlchat#hs2college
A5: Taking students on virtual tours of websites but also visual tours; Skyping with Academic Librarian, bringing librarian to your high school etc. #TxLChat
A6 It’s important for school librarians to know that we’re not doing this in isolation. Academic librarians are another important & we must build relationships and collaborate with them as much as possible. #txlchat 1 / 2
A4: Anytime I have classes focusing on databases or research or even Ss asking on their own - I point on keywords, Boolean operators & filters! So important to help these Ss understand this! #txlchat
A5 Bring in academic librarians to read to young students. For older students, get them well acquainted and comfortable with online resources! #txlchat
A6 signup for events at the local college or univ libraries to share with our HS S's so they see universality of libraries Helping Librarians! #txlchat
A6I identify each other's need and leverage those with other stakeholders, esp. teachers to create engaging library experience with direct relevance to assignments #txlchat
Discussion Groups are new in TLA. There are no dues, officers & you can join at any time. One that’s VERY relevant to tonight’s chat is the Student Transitions to College and Career Discussion Group. This is one way to continue the discussion. #txlchat#hs2college
A6: I think coming up with events & socials to cross the divide would be a good starting place for college freshman and HS Ss in addition to acad. librarian speakers & field trips! #txlchat
Q6 What sort of “outside of the box” thinking needs to take place by school and academic librarians to make the HS to college transition better for students? #txlchat#hs2college
Finally, another resource is INFOLIT which is a forum to exchange ideas on IL and build collaborative relationships between all types of librarians. Found at infolit@ala.org #txlchat#hs2college

Yes! I LOVE being a guest reader at elementary reading celebrations. I'll even show up in my college gear and talk about college a bit. #txlchat#hs2college
A5 Bring in academic librarians to read to young students. For older students, get them well acquainted and comfortable with online resources! #txlchat
I show how to locate pathfinders, how to chat with librarian-teach that there are diff libs for diff depts, show how to reserve rooms and equipment etc #TxLChat
Wouldn't it be outstanding in college freshman asked their professors to set up academic library orientations in specific content areas @The_Info_Ninja ? Maybe hs librarians could encourage graduating Ss to do this! Win Win Win #txlchat
A6I identify each other's need and leverage those with other stakeholders, esp. teachers to create engaging library experience with direct relevance to assignments #txlchat
A6 I like to show students different college/university websites just to make them familiar with features. I also log into my Blackboard (will soon be Canvas) account to show them what online courses look like, along with TurnItIn (plagiarism checker). #txlchat
@thebookinator is leading the work on the TSL standards and the College standards. That will be helpful to see how to scaffold our hs students to be ready for college. #hs2college#txlchat
#txlchat connecting with my counselors tomorrow to discover S's already committing to a college or univ. then share with them the link & what 2 look for at that library!
You are most certainly welcome. It was a pleasure for us to be here and hopefully make more connections and begin more collaborations. #txlchat#hs2college
You might also connect them with a personal librarian at their school of choice if they have chosen a major field of study. They can start school already having a contact on campus! #txlchat
Working on this w/ @clairehogg89@karleeav & some other academic libs Our deadline for having the Crosswalk completed is Jan. then it will be added to the appendix of the TSL Look for it in the future as a way to make more of those connections for your Ss. #txlchat#hs2college
