Best moment this week was putting together badging spreadsheet for PD - learned some formulas and got to work with one of our amazing technicians - will be awesome for ss and staff
A1) I haven't yet brought graphic novels or comics into my online course but I should make creating a comic/panels an option for a way to demonstrate understanding. #sstlap
A1 I used Storyjumper/Storybird, Storyboard that, and even google slides to allow ss to create comics, or books.
The questions tonight are made in Lucidpress a Google Drive extension in case you wanted to explore for yourself
#sstlap
A1 I didn't have students reading graphic novels like @jedikermit but see them as value, especially with reluctant readers -
also show ss what comics look like to help them create their own
#sstlap
A1) Did not incorporate them well, I used to use a kind of summary comic as a review for students in World History, also used bits and pieces of Gonick's "Cartoon History of the Universe", students sometimes created comics as responses #sstlap
was asked once if art, a drawing could be used to demonstrate student learning- needed to stretch my thinking- if kids can really show what they know in the format- and it connects to interest, engages, and they will do task =do it!

It's a great start- I didn't do them often, or well, but taking that step allows you to take the next step, next risk, reflect and provide more opp for students

I always like giving the "likes to draw" students an opportunity to use their interest and skill to express their learning, did a lot of pictures, very few comics, but I like the idea a lot. #sstlap
A2) Like this idea as well. In my 2nd semester course, have Ss identify global issue & propose solution. Could have them design superhero w/ skills/powers that could solve issue. Hmmm. #sstlap
A2) would be interesting to see students develop "Captain America"-like superheroes to represent the interests of different sides in big conflicts (like the World Wars, or major revolutions) #sstlap
A2 I didn't do this, so would steal @42ThinkDeep and @jedikermit ideas -
what can we look at to explore powers, influence, abilities -
also like the action figure idea of designing the traits of historical figures like action figure box #sstlap
A3) Ss choose a historical theme/essential ? as lens through which to study past (theme 1st sem & EQ 2nd sem). Have choice in tools/format their responses & products take. #sstlap
A2: My grandson loves Batman and legos. Have Ss bring in lego superhero and practice speaking skills and tell a story with lego prop. My 6 year old grandson will love this if you'll listen. #sstlap
yes- -- POV - point of view is always a great way to have kids explore conflicts- we tend to tell from US POV-
what would Captain Russia look like during cold war? Or Captain Vietnam?
#sstlap

A3 if ss are teaching the content, the learning will come. They will find ways to engage each other. Ss make the best Ts. Stand back and be the guide on the side #sstlap
#Sstlap A3: Choice is key. I can connect it to the curriculum if you can show me the interest. I will work with students to find what they like and try to find ways to apply their interests to what I HAVE to teach. #engagement#interest are the key.
A3 use technology!
When I introduced tech I wasn't the leader I was learning with them. I wish I would have realized this, incorporated this concept more- we learned together and was so much more fun
#sstlap
A3 when you admit you are not the owner of all knowledge you can step off the stage and be a learner too.
Let ss questions drive instruction and you don't have to do the heavy lifting -
#sstlap
Yes!
and curriculum if done well is about skills over specific content anyway.
I don't care about factoids but big picture and life skills -
we can google facts- provide opportunity to learn through experience AND Reflection

A3: I have "staff meetings" with my teacher candidates. I'm their "principal" and they share. I listen and hopefully change will happen. #studentvoice#sstlap

A4 don't just limit this to ss. Parents need to be active as well. Invite them into the process. Stem night, math n movement night, art club, read alongs, anything together, where students lead. #sstlap
so true - in grad class was given option to write paper or create video, podcast, etc. I always chose video project even though it took me a lot longer- lot longer - i learned from doing it much more
#sstlap
A4) Simulations are awesome, they usually trick students into learning while having fun, letting students solve a historical problem before they learn how the people facing it dealt with it is a brief way of doing it #sstlap
i like it- just wanted to make sure I was on the same page--
great idea- and yes use what ss want to call it because they own it- makes sense to them.
#sstlap
And they often help engage Ss who aren't into more traditional learning activities. Had some really great experiences w/ unmotivated Ss getting fired up about history after doing simulations back in the day. #sstlap

A4: Jumping in really late. Assigned a podcast/tv show & they went above and beyond. Got to watch my Ss live stream their final project. . Good discussion ab stereotypes & Disney https://t.co/GlkJPRLwLR#sstlap
A4 not often enough- something I need to continue to work on- but did simulations- debates, backchanneling,
let ss take info and do something with it- loved the trial activiites - the manor simulation - etc.
#sstlap
A3: My Ss have taken Google Drawing by storm this year. I always assign something & they find another way to present the info. Love when they totally re-think the assignment. #sstlap
that is a great experience- yes share their thoughts ideas in a safe place and challenge them to continue to grow - shed less desirable practices and work on best practices #sstlap

A5) In each lesson, try to have sources that connect topic to today and/or ask them how what we studied relates to something going on today. Get some really cool ideas! #sstlap
This was one of my fav assignments. In the end I give them extension credit to act as City Planners to re-design given the end goal and see howβd they revise the plan. https://t.co/y2p9sdsh1U#sstlap
nice- yes- start with easy to see aspects to teach- like compare and contrast and choosing something ss are familiar and interested in - learn skill before apply to content.
like that idea - great plug for graphic novels
#sstlap
great point - my kids school does this- need to have more of this- connect to parents so they know what is going on so they can support ss, teachers and school to achieve!
#sstlap

especially if done well- used an immigration one that was great -
oh and my why the north won the civil war - both awesome experiences and kids enjoy them almost as much as I do
#sstlap

great to have you join-
love the project- i still remember as an 8th grader doing a radio DJ project where were had to do playlist and create commercials-
your topic is so currently relevant and the format is great - with kids youtubers - #sstlap
A4: Jumping in really late. Assigned a podcast/tv show & they went above and beyond. Got to watch my Ss live stream their final project. . Good discussion ab stereotypes & Disney https://t.co/GlkJPRLwLR#sstlap
A5 I wasn't good at jumping on teachable moments often enough especially when kid suggested it.
When it was my idea, planned, and I controlled it, much better at connecting CE-
Needed to let go of control
#sstlap
A6: It seems so simple, but Quizlet Live is pretty awesome. Itβs a gr8 end of period activity to review key terms. Level 1, I know, but it gets rowdy. #sstlap

A5b - today with a POTUS who is not stop on Twitter, it would be hard not to address kids questions or comments about what is happening in the world.
24/hour news cycle provides a wealth of potential teaching moments #sstlap
I have my APUSH Ss do a Top Ten for every time period. This is an older one but the student drew every picture using the track pad. But Google just added a way to embed video in drawing. #sstlap
so cool- yes when they take ownership of it, you know they are engaged. They find a way it fits them. also shows you are not overly rigid in thinking and allow them to shine #sstlap
A3: My Ss have taken Google Drawing by storm this year. I always assign something & they find another way to present the info. Love when they totally re-think the assignment. #sstlap
that to me is the goal- when I started approaching history as HUMAN BEHAVIOR it was much easier to make connections- it isn't about old events, or dead people but the decisions they made, the situations they faced and the why. then you can compare to modern times #sstlap
A5) In each lesson, try to have sources that connect topic to today and/or ask them how what we studied relates to something going on today. Get some really cool ideas! #sstlap
a6) The simple answers are quizlet and quizizz type platforms, but I remember playing"family feud"as a student in my 6th grade social studies class in 1987 so it can be low-tech (or no-tech) too #sstlap
made me think of sim city right away - then your challenges during the rounds- I did a LIFE simulation in one class- they had to find job apart car insurance etc.
Then threw situations at them and they had to prob solve.
Your activity is very cool - #sstlap

games are awesome- love the competition-
used monopoly to show social stratification(modified rules)
survivor island - brackets for most influential person of renaissance and best POTUS of all time- included presentations, debates, team competitions.
#sstlap
A7: Oh man, Ben...I "steal" many ideas from y'all!!! Thanks for that! ππΌ I still use ideas I used when I taught elementary. Beg...Borrow...Steal er...Tweak. π #sstlap
yes that is a great example
the cooperation pieces is great
I used the Heads up/Charades app idea to create a Slides version --
https://t.co/BIGb9q3MqM
change the topics and ideas but ss give clues 1 guesses
