HAPPENING NOW: @LesleyFarmer leading a chat on #FakeNews. Follow along at #cuechat! @cueinc
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:06 PM EDT
Q1: What is your definition of fake news? #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:06 PM EDT
#cuechat Hello. Nice to be here. Consultant and higher ed part-time faculty member at Foothill @Foothill College
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:06 PM EDT
#CUEchat Just as a little teaser, I have a website on fake news: https://t.co/074xdGL0W0. You can look at it later -- I'll mention it at the end too.
  • Dale_Chu Jul 31 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A1: I’m still struck by the term, as I am with alternative facts. Neither “news” nor “facts” should require qualifiers. #cuechat
    In reply to @judyblakeney
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A1. Fake News? What’s that?! I’m eager to figure what defines this amorphous term. Help me, please! #cuechat @cuechat
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:08 PM EDT
A1: Fake News is news that appears to be true or is purported to be true, but is not? #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:09 PM EDT
A1: Any news report with intent to mislead or influence consumers to side with a point of view. Fake news is comparable to slander and libel. #cuechat
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:09 PM EDT
.@stevemcgriff so glad you are at #CUEchat tonight #WeAreCUE
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:09 PM EDT
#CUEchat I define it this way: Fake news is deliberate, publicly published disinformation/hoax/lie purported to be real news.
  • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:09 PM EDT
Adam, Tech Coach, Central CA #cuechat
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:10 PM EDT
That helps…purported to be true, but it is not…also known as “lying”? right? Or is it just “half-truths, misinformation, and deception”? #cuechat
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:10 PM EDT
.@LesleyFarmer I really like the word deliberate, as it is intentional not accidental #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
    • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:09 PM EDT

  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:10 PM EDT
#CUEchat Yes, fake news can get confused with misinformation, propaganda, satire, and so on.
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:11 PM EDT
Q2: What are some examples of fake news that you have seen? #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:11 PM EDT

A2: One challenge for students is to distinguish between fake news and click bait, and where the overlap may be. #CUEchat
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:12 PM EDT
A2. I am not sure if or when I have encountered fake news. I’m worried. I could be swimming in sea of it and now now it. #cuechat @cueinc
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:12 PM EDT
A2: One bit of fake news was that the most recent presidential inaguration had the largest crowd ever. #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:13 PM EDT
A2: Fake news may be more about intention than content. #CUEchat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:13 PM EDT
#CUEchat Good point about click bait; it's a strategy used in lots of fake news. It's in a question ahead -- you must have ESP
  • HowardKiyuna Jul 31 @ 10:13 PM EDT

  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:13 PM EDT
I need to know more, clearly…”click bait” … as in, a link that leads off in a direction that is misleading. Right? Still learning here. #cuechat

A2: One challenge for students is to distinguish between fake news and click bait, and where the overlap may be. #CUEchat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:14 PM EDT
#CUEchat Examples? Snake oil ads, PizzaGate, National Inquirer, pseudoscience, some Tweets for (in)famous people
  • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:14 PM EDT
A2: Cable news. CNN, Fox, MSNBC.....all are trying to influence a certain point of view. I don't see either as worse than the other, though they will try to say they're right and other is always fake #cuechat
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:15 PM EDT
@techcoachjuarez I don't equate the intentions of all the networks. Some don't bother to present alternate points of view. #CUEchat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:15 PM EDT
#CUEchat Lots of news images are edited/cropped to mislead people. Think of the photo of the twin Towers and the guy in front of them while they are being smashed by teh plane. Not true.
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:15 PM EDT
So, media sources…can be trusted? Or are we saying that we must still look for bias, too? Yikes! Bias, Fake News, and Click Bait…who can we trust? #cuechat
    • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:14 PM EDT

#CUEchat Good point, Adam. One of the consequences of fake news is polarization and over-generalization. A couple of questions ahead...
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:17 PM EDT
A3: Very big. It takes the need for people to think logically and skeptically up many levels - at least, if our democracy is important to us. #CUEchat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:18 PM EDT
#CUEchat So you're pointing out a big consequence of fake news, Steve: some people get stressed and start to distrust ALL news
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:18 PM EDT
A3. Big when I must think so hard to validate the source of news information I am reading or hearing …as it comes into my head! Yikes! #cuechat @cueinc
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:19 PM EDT
Yes! I just tweeted that! My friend @rushtonh and i are in the same wave length here! LOL. #cuechat

  • Dale_Chu Jul 31 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A3: It's a huge one, and a hard one to overstate at that. It serves to undermine one of the bedrocks of our democracy https://t.co/ICi1RwnZV4 #cuechat
    In reply to @judyblakeney
    • Acosta Jul 31 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Just a sample of the sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa. I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt. We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy.
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:19 PM EDT
#CUEchat Yes, implications of fake news can be huge – it impacts politics, science, crime, as well as psychological damage (mistrust, cynicism, stress, polarization) -- and leads to many bad decisions
  • brynmw Jul 31 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A3: I see it as a language issue. Students need to understand multiple sources and understanding the difference between opinion and fact (not post-post modernism facts as constructs) and finding multiple and primary sources. #cuechat
  • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A3: It's massive. Teaching students to navigate news and see bias is essential. So many forces are out there trying to influence their decisions, etc. Fake news leads to lots of negative, knee jerk reactions. #cuechat
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:19 PM EDT
A3: The truth is lost in the hype. I find it difficult to identify the truth, but know that I need to help students with this as well #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:20 PM EDT
Love Bryn's pointing to the power of language here! #CUEchat
    In reply to @brynmw
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:20 PM EDT
Yes, that’s what @glori2glory just said at the dinner conversation we are having with friends (at their house) while I’m Twitter Chatting! #cuechat

Q4: Why do you think people believe fake news? #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:21 PM EDT
#CUEchat Exactly, Judy. That IS why we need to teach our students critical thinking.
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:22 PM EDT
A4. Uh, If I don’t know when I’m reading fake news, then how can I help other people not believe fake news? See what I mean? #cuechat
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:23 PM EDT
A4: The better question may be why people believe news, period. I don't have that level of skepticism, but it's a good point of departure for asking the critical question: "How do we know that?" #CUEchat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:24 PM EDT
Confirmation bias (it confirms your own point of view), deep belief system, ad strategies that elicit strong emotions, more titillating, lack of knowledge, distrust sources, repeated fake news – if you hear/read it enough you start to believe it #CUEchat
  • brynmw Jul 31 @ 10:24 PM EDT
A4: It fits their personal narrative of how the world works. It reaffirms their beliefs. That is why it is difficult to discuss rationally. It’s all@a out emotion and self. #cuechat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:24 PM EDT
#CUEchat Right, Steve, if you don't recognize it, it's hard to teach students about it. We'll get to that in a couple of minutes.
  • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A4: I like to think people don't choose to believe it, but in our fast paced world, it's an easy trap to fall into. It also has to do with ppl not doing due diligence on issues, etc. #cuechat
  • kat_goyette Jul 31 @ 10:25 PM EDT
A4: People are drawn to what they want to believe. Unfortunately, many individuals seek drama. The more "unreal" reality becomes, the more they crave even more unbelievable stories. And if it is heard more than once, or on the internet, it must be true, right? #sheep #cuechat
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:25 PM EDT
.@rushtonh I am wondering where the line between skepticism and cynicism lies. How do I stay objective? #CUEchat #WeAreCUE

  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:25 PM EDT
Oh! Confirmation bias…so, we seek out news that confirms our biased view points. Yikes! That could be me, even on my best days of trying to be non-confirmed in my bias! #cuechat
    • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:24 PM EDT

#CUEchat What is even scarier is if the issue is close to your heart, such as abortion, then if news counters your belief, you are more likely to REALLY stick to your guns about it (e.g., NRA)

Sometime, look at Stephen Colbert's piece on "Truthiness" #CUEchat
  • kat_goyette Jul 31 @ 10:28 PM EDT
A4: Traditional education system taught students to regurgitate info given by trusted source, i.e. teacher, text, etc. Difficult to shift mindsets to a more critical eye, to promote skepticism. It is far easier to believe what you are told than to think for yourself. #cuechat
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:28 PM EDT
Okay, that helps me understand better. So, I need critical news analysis skills. Right? #cuechat

Yes, Steve, news literacy is key -- it's a subset of media literacy, which is a subset of information literacy #CUEchat

#cuechat

Good point, Dale; Journalists don't have time to verify "facts" either as they need to be the first ones with the news, whether it is true or not, sometimes. $$$ #CUEchat
  • kat_goyette Jul 31 @ 10:31 PM EDT
Look at the "reality tv" hype. Is it real or perpetuated? I would still argue it is "fake news", as it has the danger of teaching students that life is just like tv. Perhaps it is not deemed "news" by adults, but dangerous none the less. #cuechat
    In reply to @stevemcgriff

A5: I have to be honest, that I can see it when I disagree with its message, but it is much harder when it confirms my POV #CUEchat #WeAreCUE So should be doing more debates with random side-picking in school #CUEchat #WeAreCUE
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:31 PM EDT
The need to be first aligns with our desire to see things competitively - for some, it's more important to win than to be right. #cuechat

Right, Steven. Skepticism is OK, cynicism is not so great #CUEchat
  • techcoachjuarez Jul 31 @ 10:32 PM EDT
A5: Easier said than done. There are some sites out there that help with fact checking. I like to watch/read news from both left and right. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. #cuechat
  • Dale_Chu Jul 31 @ 10:32 PM EDT
Sigh. It's a sad state of affairs when we need to add "non-threatened" as a qualifier, but that's the reality when the media is branded as the enemy of the people. #cuechat
    In reply to @rushtonh
  • rushtonh Jul 31 @ 10:33 PM EDT
A5: I have to admit, I'm much more likely to question sources now from any report than I was a few years ago. #cuechat
  • stevemcgriff Jul 31 @ 10:33 PM EDT
So, perhaps I can be more aware that when something agrees with my POV, to lean towards greater caution before biting it hook, line, and sinker. #cuechat
  • LesleyFarmer Jul 31 @ 10:33 PM EDT
A great activity instead of debates where each side asserts its point of view is to have as the goal of a debate to learn more about the other side's point of view #CUEchat
  • judyblakeney Jul 31 @ 10:33 PM EDT

  • brynmw Jul 31 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A5: okay. This is a difficult question. How do you know truth? How do you believe those with whom you have conversations? I suppose you need to have built relationships of trust with those presenting the news. #cuechat

A6: Give kids map of political spectrum. Have try to figure where the sources of stories fall on the spectrum. Have them try to explain why it was presented in that fashion. #cuechat

Very good question. "Fake news" can apply to personal relationships as well. Gossip can spread like wildfire. This can be toxic in school environments and in staffs and across districts. #cuechat
    • brynmw Jul 31 @ 10:34 PM EDT
A5: okay. This is a difficult question. How do you know truth? How do you believe those with whom you have conversations? I suppose you need to have built relationships of trust with those presenting the news. #cuechat

#fakenews, is the National Enquirer! They photoshop images and lead with outlandish stories all the time. Is that an example? It has existed for years! #cuechat

  • Dale_Chu Jul 31 @ 10:46 PM EDT
Thanks Judy! I've been giving a lot of thought to the topic. Also, seeing @HamiltonMusical last weekend has gotten me particularly sentimental about the greatness of our country, and the shortcomings that are still holding back this great experiment! #cuechat

#cuechat, wait, isn’t the idea that the media is the enemy a “fake news” thing perpetuated by a control-monger trying to influence or disillusionment with the media?
      • Dale_Chu Jul 31 @ 10:32 PM EDT
Sigh. It's a sad state of affairs when we need to add "non-threatened" as a qualifier, but that's the reality when the media is branded as the enemy of the people. #cuechat
