A2: Cable news. CNN, Fox, MSNBC.....all are trying to influence a certain point of view. I don't see either as worse than the other, though they will try to say they're right and other is always fake #cuechat

Lots of news images are edited/cropped to mislead people. Think of the photo of the twin Towers and the guy in front of them while they are being smashed by teh plane. Not true.
So, media sources…can be trusted? Or are we saying that we must still look for bias, too? Yikes! Bias, Fake News, and Click Bait…who can we trust? #cuechat

Just a sample of the sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa. I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt. We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy.

Yes, implications of fake news can be huge – it impacts politics, science, crime, as well as psychological damage (mistrust, cynicism, stress, polarization) -- and leads to many bad decisions
A3: I see it as a language issue. Students need to understand multiple sources and understanding the difference between opinion and fact (not post-post modernism facts as constructs) and finding multiple and primary sources. #cuechat
A3: It's massive. Teaching students to navigate news and see bias is essential. So many forces are out there trying to influence their decisions, etc. Fake news leads to lots of negative, knee jerk reactions. #cuechat
A3: The truth is lost in the hype. I find it difficult to identify the truth, but know that I need to help students with this as well #CUEchat#WeAreCUE

A4: The better question may be why people believe news, period. I don't have that level of skepticism, but it's a good point of departure for asking the critical question: "How do we know that?" #CUEchat
Confirmation bias (it confirms your own point of view), deep belief system, ad strategies that elicit strong emotions, more titillating, lack of knowledge, distrust sources, repeated fake news – if you hear/read it enough you start to believe it
#CUEchat
A4: It fits their personal narrative of how the world works. It reaffirms their beliefs. That is why it is difficult to discuss rationally. It’s all@a out emotion and self. #cuechat
A4: I like to think people don't choose to believe it, but in our fast paced world, it's an easy trap to fall into. It also has to do with ppl not doing due diligence on issues, etc. #cuechat
A4: People are drawn to what they want to believe. Unfortunately, many individuals seek drama. The more "unreal" reality becomes, the more they crave even more unbelievable stories. And if it is heard more than once, or on the internet, it must be true, right? #sheep#cuechat

Oh! Confirmation bias…so, we seek out news that confirms our biased view points. Yikes! That could be me, even on my best days of trying to be non-confirmed in my bias! #cuechat

What is even scarier is if the issue is close to your heart, such as abortion, then if news counters your belief, you are more likely to REALLY stick to your guns about it (e.g., NRA)

A4: Traditional education system taught students to regurgitate info given by trusted source, i.e. teacher, text, etc. Difficult to shift mindsets to a more critical eye, to promote skepticism. It is far easier to believe what you are told than to think for yourself. #cuechat

I agree, Adam. I also think most people don't have the time to do the due diligence, which is all the more reason for a free and independent press. #cuechat

Skeptic! I need more skeptic in me…okay, now how to help our students have healthy, constructive, critical thinking like, skepticism, not dis-illusionism. #cuechat

Good point, Dale; Journalists don't have time to verify "facts" either as they need to be the first ones with the news, whether it is true or not, sometimes. $$$ #CUEchat
Look at the "reality tv" hype. Is it real or perpetuated? I would still argue it is "fake news", as it has the danger of teaching students that life is just like tv. Perhaps it is not deemed "news" by adults, but dangerous none the less. #cuechat
A5: I have to be honest, that I can see it when I disagree with its message, but it is much harder when it confirms my POV #CUEchat#WeAreCUE So should be doing more debates with random side-picking in school #CUEchat#WeAreCUE
A5: Easier said than done. There are some sites out there that help with fact checking. I like to watch/read news from both left and right. The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. #cuechat
Sigh. It's a sad state of affairs when we need to add "non-threatened" as a qualifier, but that's the reality when the media is branded as the enemy of the people. #cuechat
So, perhaps I can be more aware that when something agrees with my POV, to lean towards greater caution before biting it hook, line, and sinker. #cuechat

A great activity instead of debates where each side asserts its point of view is to have as the goal of a debate to learn more about the other side's point of view #CUEchat

Left and Right news sources. Reminds of the topics I avoided in college! Perhaps I should have paid more attention to understanding whether a news source is Left or Right. Oh, boy. #cuechat

some ways to discern fake news: Fake-checking, look up to trace source, look across to other sources, look down through content (authority, spelling/writing, credibility), look in for self bias #CUEchat
A5: okay. This is a difficult question. How do you know truth? How do you believe those with whom you have conversations? I suppose you need to have built relationships of trust with those presenting the news. #cuechat

This is too important to miss. All educators are responsible for literacy, especially information literacy, as it is part of all subjects and levels. #CUEchat
#cuechat, wait, isn’t the idea that the media is the enemy a “fake news” thing perpetuated by a control-monger trying to influence or disillusionment with the media?
Sigh. It's a sad state of affairs when we need to add "non-threatened" as a qualifier, but that's the reality when the media is branded as the enemy of the people. #cuechat
A5: Primary sources are best. Don't tell me what someone believes, show me a video of them providing their viewpoint. I will watch a presidential debate to make decisions, not simply listen to a summary by newscasters. #cuechat
A6: Give kids map of political spectrum. Have try to figure where the sources of stories fall on the spectrum. Have them try to explain why it was presented in that fashion. #cuechat
A5: I like @LesleyFarmer list of cross-checking and verifying original sources. Also knowing the perspective and bias of a source is valuable #CUEchat#WeAreCUE
Take fake news quizzes (Factitious), strip format of real and fake news, and have them evaluate them; be a fact checker; look at history of fake news; bring in fake news and justify why-or have class evaluate it; edit images to make fake, create their own fake news;

Very good question. "Fake news" can apply to personal relationships as well. Gossip can spread like wildfire. This can be toxic in school environments and in staffs and across districts. #cuechat

#fakenews, is the National Enquirer! They photoshop images and lead with outlandish stories all the time. Is that an example? It has existed for years! #cuechat

Yes, Dale, there's a whole information cycle that traces the idea/originator to expression to communications channel to receiver and their use of the idea #CUEchat
Thanks Judy! I've been giving a lot of thought to the topic. Also, seeing @HamiltonMusical last weekend has gotten me particularly sentimental about the greatness of our country, and the shortcomings that are still holding back this great experiment! #cuechat

Addressed as part of information and digital literacy course; We talk about the info cycle. & I have a WebQuest on fake news, and I have students create podcasts about fake news. And see My URL: https://t.co/074xdGL0W0
