The idea for @onedchat stemmed from a conversation between Allison Fuisz and Amy Bowker in the Spring of 2014. They noticed a gap on Twitter where an Ontario-based education chat was concerned. After several conversations and a vision in mind, @onedchat was created.
Please remember to use #ONedchat in your tweets to keep the conversation connected to those participating. It's an Q1/A1 format but if you forgot, it's okay - it is about chatting, not format when all is said and done. #ONedchat
Hi everyone, welcome to #ONedchat and our discussion on #MentalHealth. Happy to be guest moderating with my #OCSB peep @JulieNihmey! Please join us in the chat!
Thank you for having me on tonight's chat on #mentalhealth. I am so excited to be joined by such good company and to grow this conversation with teachers, parents and all those tuning in. Use your voice, be heard, #endthestigma. #onedchat
Hi everyone! My name is Amanda and I am a passionate #mentalhealth advocate and co-founder of @LittleVBooks. Our newest book The Lighthouse discusses mental health, a topic dear to my heart as it relates to #anxiety and #Alzheimer's disease. #ONEdChat
Hello, #ONedchat - it's been a while since I've hung out in a Twitter chat, but with all the amazing people in here tonight, I couldn't resist! (It's also my first Twitter chat since Twitter increased the character count!)
Thanks for your leadership with this discussion - I’m attending a session in TO this evening but will do my best to check in with the discussion #ocsb#OnEdChat

Hi, everyone! My name is Amanda (the other Amanda!) and I'm a writer, speaker and advocate on LGBTQ and mental health issues. But most importantly, I'm a mom with kids with mental health challenges. Let's do this! #ONedchat
Before we get into our questions at 835, we want to remind you that answer how you can, when you can. Observe if it goes to fast. We want to create a safe space for sharing/learning/chatting. #ONedchat
My name is Shauna, I am the co-founder and Pedagogical Coach to the Delightful Dozen, the first ever students at @blueskyschoolca! I believe that mental health = health and no one can learn unless they feel validated, heard and safe. #ONedchat
Hi everyone, I’m Julie Nihmey, Grade 3 teacher. Welcome to #ONedchat and our discussion on #MentalHealth. Happy to be guest moderating with my #OCSB colleague @laurie_azzi! Please join us in the chat!
A1 Stigma is the reason why two-thirds of people do not seek help related to Mental Illness. Stigma is often considered the “hidden burden” of MI. It is the reason why the “I am fine” mask is kept on. #ONedchat
A1 Mental Illness can affect anyone- our family members, friends, colleagues, students. The myths & stereotypes expose individuals to further prejudice and discrimination. It’s time to speak up and #EndStigma. #ONedchat
A1 Stigma to me is the result of a person thinking or acting differently towards a person who suffers. It needs to be addressed at school so that colleagues or others who come into the school who suffer feel safe and accepted. #ONedchat
A1: We have built @blueskyschoolca around several values, including connection and balance, that help us guide us everyday. Daily, we hold House Meetings (we have houses instead of classes) where learners share and listen to one another. #ONedchat
A1 Stigma is judgement, lack of understanding, a barrier or force keeping ppl silent instead of opening up for help. It's important that we discuss breaking the stigma in schools & at a young age, so children are taught to not feel ashamed if they need to ask for help. #OnEdChat
A1: Stigma is the clearest indication that we have a way to go in our society when it comes to understanding the complexities of human nature #ONedchat
A1: Stigma is the elephant in the room we’ve finally named but haven’t *quite* managed to get out the door yet.
School is a big part of kids’ lives, and if we don’t make it safe for them to talk about mental health there, we’re doing them a great disservice. #ONedchat
A1 Being faced with stigma can often feel like being branded (think scarlet letter), except there should be no shame in opening up about a #mentalillness. It can be hard to open up if the result is known to be judgement, labelling or even bullying. #OnEdChat
A1 With all of the stressors that someone who suffers mentally carries already, it becomes even more difficult when feelings of self-worth are tested. #ONedchat
.@CMHAOntario defines #stigma as a negative stereotype & discrimination is often the behaviour that results from this. Those with a mental illness are often faced with multiple, intersecting layers of discrimination as a result of their mental illness/identity. #OnEdChat
A1: The stigma around mental health is a negative stereotype against those who are suffering. We must teach our students that mental illness is real, mental health is important, and that it is OK to seek help #ONedchat#MentalHealth
A1: Everyday, we model for our learners that they can talk about emotions, experience emotions and reset themselves safely. They can take a break whenever they self identify the need. #ONedchat
A1 It also needs to be addressed with students so that they can empathize with, and accept those who are different, rather than judge. When one understands something and becomes more familiar with it, they become more comfortable and accepting of it. #ONedchat
What type of format do you use to lead these house meetings? Does it follow a consistent format each meeting? Or is it fluid with no format? Would love to learn more! #ONedchat
Excited to see so many teachers from #Ottawa and the #OCSB. Looking forward to hearing your feedback this evening and hope this chat will help support you in your classroom! #ONedchat

We all gather together for 1 hour every morning from 10-11 a.m. We start with a "Moment of Zen," a video, photo or text to set the mood for the day or provoke thought and conversation. Depending on what's going on, our discussions change daily. #ONedchat
A1 #ONedchat should be addressed at school - otherwise we perpetuate the stigma. so many Ss each day, these same Ss grow up into adults. Like it or not we are influencers & we need to lead in this area from the ground up & reduce stigma by talking openly to bring awareness
Hi all, my name is Samantha and I am the co-founder and illustrator of @LittleVBooks with local author @AmandaBernardo. Having had my own struggles with mental health, I can attest to the fact that these discussions are needed. #ONEdChat
...sometimes we create new school guidelines and policies together. Sometimes, we do a #mastermind session where one learner shares an issue or problem and others take turns giving input. Sometimes, we go over plans and ideas. #ONedchat
A1: Reducing stigma for staff & students is a priority in our school to help reduce/remove barriers & open conversations to support well-being. #ONedchat
Amazing crew supporting #ONedchat - I will share from my account when I can. I am awe of the voices I am viewing online & feel positive vibes throughout the chat already. #MentalHealthAwareness#BellLetsTalk
A1) I believe it's important to open up a conversation with my colleagues at the @uOttawaEdu. I have learned from @laurie_azzi that often we wear masks. I am hoping that we all can remove our masks and share our stories. #ONedchat
Love all the voices in this chat tonight. Seeing so many educators engaged in mental health leadership makes my little mama heart happy. Thank you! #ONedchat
A1 Stigma often comes across as a pre-conceived notion or thought about what it means to have mental illness. When one admits to having a mental illness, people often judge and see it as a sign of weakness, or ‘’not real’’ because mental illness isn’t always visible. #ONedchat
A1: Like anything else, an experience or diagnosis of a mental illness is only one part of a person's identify. Sometimes, it can feel a lot bigger than that, but we cannot define any individual by a single characteristic, or label. #ONedchat
A1: We need to recognize that many of our staff and students are coming from homes where a loved one is dealing with mental health challenges - our voice and comments have an impact - including what we don’t say #ONedchat
Schools should be promoting the idea that all people are not only different physiologically, but also psychologically. We are all wired differently and all process things in our own ways. #ONedchat
It should be a lesson that anyone who shares that they suffer from a mental illness is doing a great service to others by normalizing their illness and advocating for themselves. #ONedchat
A2 School culture should address the well-being of both students & educators. ALL should feel safe to ask for help. Others should show compassion and understanding. #ONedchat
Oh no folks - this is where tech, well, the one behind it made an error - please exuse the mix on the questions. Important piece is the convo. So sorry everyone! #ONedchat
A2 Schools can create a culture in support of #MentalHealth by creating curriculum-based learning programs; developing a safe & supportive environment - where talking about our mental health is okay; & by simply raising awareness through campaigns like #BellLetsTalk. #OnEdChat
One of the problems with Twitter's new flexibility on character number is that it slows me down in a chat! More words to craft, more words to read! I've already fallen 7 min behind! #ONedchat
A2 Schools should openly discuss Mental Health as part of the curriculum for students, but also as PD for staff. Education is the only real way to end the stigma associated with Mental Illness. #ONedchat
A2 #ONedchat NonJudgemental, empathetic. Many May not have same experience personally but more often than not can relate in some way (friend, relative etc). Just because you can’t visibly see the injury doesn’t mean there isn’t one. I’ve learned we all have masks
In reply to
@ONedchat, @AmandaBernardo, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
A2 I think this kind of culture can be created through PDs surrounding mental health, inviting speakers to the school such as sufferers, families of sufferers and/or doctors in Psychology and by bringing mental illness and mental health awareness to staff. Start talking!#ONedchat
A2 In the #GOC, we've created this culture with programs such as #NotMyselfToday. This is a great campaign that could be transformed to be used in schools too! Teaching children that its okay to feel and talk about how they feel is the culture to strive for. #OnEdChat
A2: A really challenging question. I think people who are seen to be leaders need to have the courage to talk about their personal experiences and thereby empower others. Unfortunately, I didn't really do this #ONedchat
@ONedchat#OnEdChat#stigma is more than just a negative stereotype; it is created out of fear and distrust...of not knowing what to expect or how to deal with a situation that arises. It is easier to judge and isolate those who suffer from #mentalillness. @CMHAOntario@1in5kidz
A2: By first teaching our students to recognize their own emotions and establishing a safe learning environment. Students need to know that is it OK to not feel 💯 and that they are never alone. #ONedchat
A1: Negative attitudes and thoughts toward mental illness create stigma. As educators, we play a big role in confidence, self esteem and character of our students. We need to open up the conversation and bring awareness to MI and let them know they are not alone #ONedchat
A2 Whether it is at home or at school, it should be highlighted in both spaces that mental health is just as important as physical health. I think a lot of the time simply taking the time to ask someone ‘’how are things going with you?’’ #ONEdChat
A big wondering I have with educational institutions is: what would happen if one of your leaders came out as being diagnosed with a serious mental illness? Would your level of trust/comfort change? #ONedchat
I completely agree, it needs to be a culture adopted, embraced and supported by ALL. We hear this in the context of work all the time, management/employees, teachers/students. It's not a us or them convo, it needs to be everyone ALL IN. #ONedchat
If you see a student or teacher getting frazzled you can ask ‘’what is going through your mind right now? Is there any way I can help?’’. These questions can really narrow down the dialogue and even give insight into the persons’ thoughts, feelings and struggles. #OnEdChat
A2: One thing, as an administrator it is really important to let people know you have the time to listen to them. Being the 'busy leader' is no help to anyone #ONedchat
My name is Catherine Latour and I am a Grade 2 teacher. I have the great fortune to work with @JulieNihmey My brother suffered and took his life 3 years ago so this subject is very important to me #ONedchat
Of course, not everyone will share what they are going through in those moments, but the goal is to make the school environment a welcoming place for transparent dialogue. #BellLetsTalk#OnEdChat
A1 “What we don’t say” ... continues the stigma. Say something. Ask questions. Show you care. Make sure they know it’s OK to take off the mask. #ONedchat#HeyAreYouAlright
A1: We need to recognize that many of our staff and students are coming from homes where a loved one is dealing with mental health challenges - our voice and comments have an impact - including what we don’t say #ONedchat
Agreed. Not saying anything at all can have an impact. Whether it be not acknowledging a situation, not sticking up for a friend on the playground, not be part of the conversation or sharing how we feel. #ONedchat
A2: Making learning spaces as inclusive as possible is critical.
A personal example: I have a #trans child who hid who she was from everyone for 11yrs and her mental health suffered greatly. Once she came out and found acceptance, she blossomed. Inclusion matters. #ONedchat
A2: Also, schools need to be open as possible to community social services - make sure you know what the supports are in your community - you will need them #ONedchat
Late to #ONedchat thanks for creating aconversation around mental health. Spent most of my life quietly trying to find the right help for me. Went public after encouragement in group therapy to share my stories to help others. If I can spare just one person an ounce of pain ❤
This is a great idea! The #GOC is using a similar model to enforce our own culture change and utilizing the speakers bureau to bring in lived experience in the conversation, which has proved extremely powerful and helpful. #Onedchat
Your comments remind me of the incredible Ashanti Branch and the @everforwardclub, who I had the absolute pleasure of participating in a "masks we wear" workshop with.

There aren't enough likes for this. This is part of the reason I finally spoke up, it took me awhile, but when I realized I had a platform to use my voice to make a difference, I felt like I had an obligation to be part of the conversation. #ONedchat
A2: A really challenging question. I think people who are seen to be leaders need to have the courage to talk about their personal experiences and thereby empower others. Unfortunately, I didn't really do this #ONedchat
A2 When staff or students return after a serious illness we have a welcome back party or gift - what do we do when someone returns from dealing with mental health challenges? Ending the silence would be a start ... - #ONedchat#ocsb
We never worry about 'being on time here'. Tweet what you can, when you can. More important to have a convo with something that resonates with you :) #ONedchat
A2) We need to create safe environments. Individuals are not feeling safe enough to share their stories. For this reason, they hide behind masks. Continuing initiatives like #BellLetsTalk and #HeyAreYouAlright give our peers the courage to share. #ONedchat
A1: Sadly 'stigma' often comes across as something that students are to be ashamed of. This leads to students feeling the need to hide the truth behind who they truly are and what they struggle with. #ONedchat
In reply to
@ONedchat, @AmandaBernardo, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
A2) I feel it is important that we start by suspending judgement with colleagues and work at building healthy relationships by building trust amongst one another. #ONedchat
Thanks for joining us Catherine. I lost my cousin two years ago to suicide also and I know how scary and emotional it may be to join these conversations. Having you here makes all the difference and we're grateful for your perspective! #ONedchat
Attn #kpdsbpride network. There is a really interesting live chat happening right now about #mentalhealth. I know you all have a lot to share if you are available for the next bit :) Just search #ONedchat Thank you! Pls RT
A2 continued) Also, by sharing our own personal experiences, we empower others to do the same! This will create a domino effect, and eventually, remove the stigma. #ONedchat
We have been very grateful to @CHEOYouthNet for their excellent (free!) workshops at @blueskyschoolca - creating space for important conversations. #ONedchat
A3 When I was writing The Lighthouse, I did A LOT of research on #mentalhealth, beyond the work I've already done, and understanding the signs was a large part of this research. It helped us illustrate the signs that we tried to depict in our illustrations. #OnEdChat
A3 The best strategy to end stigma & support others is to share your own story. It will encourage others to open up & share theirs. That is the focus of our #OECTACLC18#HeyAreYouAlright project this year. #ONedchat
#ONedchat I feel that sharing is important and being safe to share on our staff has made us all a little more human and increased the positive culture in the school
A3 Some signs included: seeing a student sad or withdrawn from their classmates, drastic changes in their behaviour, intense worries or fears, not eating, etc. How should you intervene? Listen non-judgementally, speak in a calm voice... 1/2 #ONEdChat
Never late - you were where you needed to be and will share what you can, when you can. We hope you are finding strength & are certain your story inspires others. #ONedchat
A3: “I statements” about your observations are a safe way to start a conversation. “I’ve noticed that... What can I do to help?” Let them know that you care about them and want to help! #ONedchat#MentalHealthAwareness
Illness implies weakness. I'd prefer we get rid of the term mental illness and use mental health challenges. Aim to help everyone create stronger mental health. #ONedchat
A3 ...2/2 reassure them that you're there to listen. There are a lot of courses available, for example the Mental Health First Aid offered by @MHCC_ , that can equip you with the skills needed to support a student/colleague in these situations. #OnEdChathttps://t.co/0AfPiD5naW
A3 @Bell_LetsTalk has a great list of interventions to support a colleague who is struggling (Taken from Bell Let’s Talk Toolkit, p. 58) Intervention depends on the severity of the problem. #ONedchat
A2: We need to model a staff that doesn't judge or favour their students. Remember that life happens and that we are there to support one another and meet students where they are at in life #ONedchat
In reply to
@ONedchat, @AmandaBernardo, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
A3 Start with listening and being open - this can make a real difference. Ask questions, don't look at your watch, realize that this may be the most important thing you do today #ONedchat
A2: More than anything, we need to create classrooms and schools that are safe for people to express themselves. Learners need to feel appreciated, respected and loved. #ONedchat
A1 Stigma is a lack of understanding (fear?) and maybe a lack of empathy for people who suffer from mental illness. Educating ourselves and others is key to erasing stigma #ONedchat
I definitely see your point! A mental illness is simply a diagnosis, it doesn't define the person but it certainly helps them to narrow down treatment possibilities. Everyone can work toward better mental health status no matter where they fall on the spectrum. #OnEdchat
I have a multitude of their pins at my desk. From feeling sad, anxious, happy, inspired ... or my favourite go to pin as I'm always hungry .. my hangry pin. #ONedchat
Unfortunately, I have a family emergency and need to run. I wish I could stay for the second half of #ONedchat as it's an incredible discussion. Keep talking, end the stigma, and THANK YOU for helping kids like mine thrive.
A2) Staff rooms need to be safe places for ALL staff. Sometimes we forget how powerful our words are, even when ‘joking’. Responsible, mindful conversations are needed. #ONedchat

@ONedchat, @AmandaBernardo, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
A3: The biggest thing that we can do is let staff and students know that we are there - judgement free. Just LISTEN. Let the others feel heard and valued. Express how honoured you are that they trust you enough to share such vulnerable pieces of their life with you #ONedchat
In reply to
@ONedchat, @AmandaBernardo, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
Please do not feel like you are late. We are grateful for whomever can share/chat on this topic when they can, how they can. Thank you for being here. #ONedchat
A3 If you notice that a student is struggling, make the parents aware. The resource team should also be made aware. As for a colleague, befriend them. Say hello. #ONedchat
Also having a supportive and caring administrator (such as yourself) creates the kind of environment in which educators feel safe to share their stories #ONedchat
A2: Through creating a warm and caring environment. Making it known to those around you (both students and colleagues) that you are always someone they can turn to with absolutely no judgement. #ONedchat
A3: One effective strategy is to be proactive and provide opportunities for staff to learn, talk and engage more in learning about personal well-being and mindfulness to support themselves & their students #ONedchat
A3: If you notice a change in behaviour or attitude, it's OK to tell the person (respectfully and privately) that you notice, that you care, that you're here. #ONedchat
A3: I find a really helpful way for me to support others is to notice what is going on, communicate that clearly to them and then ask if they need listening, validation or advice. I don't jump right into advice anymore. #ONedchat
#ONedchat
Hello! I’m Teri, a Pastor & a patient. Acknowledging my own depression, PTSD, & substance abuse has liberated me & given me new perspective on mental health. In counseling I have accepted & am learning to express my feminine gender identity. Learning to value others!
Reframing Needs to focus and shift from disease model to balanced model where Spirit is unbalanced and needs to be rebalanced. I don’t think Health can ignore mind, body and spirit. All need balance. We need to acknowledge disconnection and help one another reconnect #ONedchat
A3: Validation is huge. Many of us accept the unrealistic expectations of society as gospel and kill ourselves to conform. We need to start teaching empathy from a young age. Sean Covey's 7 Habits Of Happy Kids should go home with every newborn. #ONedchat

@ONedchat, @AmandaBernardo, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
A3: Thank the person for being vulnerable and brave and sharing with you - whether they share their story in words or in facial and body expression. #ONedchat
A3: For my own family situation it was prayer and my daughter turning to scripture that had a great impact for her - we never know what the best support is for someone else #ONedchat
I often say this about my director, but I'm so grateful each morning he asks how I'm doing, how was my weekend. It's the simplest of gestures he doesn't even realize he does, but it shows he is saying: I'm here, I see you, are you okay? #ONedChat
A3 Early intervention is important. Teachers, if not already familiar, should be made aware of the signs of struggle. It should be brought up to the parent or guardian in a non-threatening, non-fear mongering way, but rather in a tone that expresses genuine concern. #ONEdChat
Compassion, acceptance. We need more. Our colleagues need to know we are there, that they are never alone. How do we break the ongoing pattern of stigma? By standing up for each other and realizing that, regardless of the challenges we face, we truly matter. #ONedchat
It seems simple, but don't ever underestimate the power of breathing slowly and deliberately, together. Several deep breaths as emotions ramp up can bring us back to mindfuless and equip us to have a conversation. #ONedchat
A4 My favourite support for opening up dialogue (as whole group or individual) is the Bell Let’s Talk Toolkit https://t.co/JJ4I9bQsyp Great lessons and tools to use when supporting a family member, friend or colleague who is struggling #ONedchat#BellLetsTalk
A4 What may seem like a minor problem to an adult, may not feel that way to a child or teen. Minimising a child or teen’s struggle or issue can make them feel really small and invalidated and lead to future problems with self-worth and emotional regulation. #ONEdChat
A4 I typically chat about my own story which is about my brother @chrisnihmey who is a sufferer. It opens up conversations and allows people to share their own stories. #ONedchat
Be4 I came out about my own personal struggle with #anxiety, I was terrified 2 admit life wasn't perfect-that I wasn't keeping up with the image people had of me. Ppl thought I had it all 2gether & that made it harder 2 admit I didn't. It was liberating to say I didnt. #ONedchat
In reply to
@KatherineDines, @ONedchat, @laurie_azzi, @JulieNihmey, @SamanthaClusiau, @MavenOfMayhem
A4 A great start is to follow #BellLetsTalk strategies to #EndStigma -> Show respect and empathy for all. Challenge stigma when you see it. Watch your language. Learn the facts. Raise awareness. #ONedchat
A4: Remember parents in this question - we have a responsibility for them as well. Community resources are key - good to have professionals to talk to. However, there is not much training out there to assist in supporting others #ONedchat
I personally felt that something was wrong with me when I was an anxious child. I was told ‘’don’t worry about it’’ or that I was just being ‘’dramatic’’. To this day I struggle to unlearn the things I’ve been conditioned to believe about myself. #ONEdChat
A3: I often hear parents say, "There were no red flags." There are always red flags. They just go unnoticed. Sometimes because we are too exhausted, we don't want to think that our kids will struggle or we think if we ignore it, it will stop. #ONedchat
A4: The Nurtured Heart Approach - https://t.co/txuWU8xY7Q and @MindUP4Success have been extremely helpful to me as an educator in creating safe spaces, shared language and building meaningful connections. #ONedchat
A4: Starting with resources like the Zones of Regulation not only teach students to identify their own feelings, but it also sparks a conversation around acceptance of emotions. Further PD such as SafeTALK and ASIST training is a huge asset #ONedchat
A4 I have struggled with anxiety 4 most of my life, only recently opening up about the struggle it sometimes was & continues to be. I have to admit that by seeing conversations on #mentalhealth grow, I felt less ashamed about opening up with my own personal story. #OnEdchat
Q4: Humour. Laughter. Real, honest, straight acknowledgement without judgement. Recognizing that all the pieces of us put together make us unique, and that we should own our differences and gifts. #OnEdChat
Listening, creating spaces where people can be real and not judged. Recently heard a great suggestion acknowledging self judgement statements and asking to reframe to affirmations. #ONedchat
With that said, I think employers should have policies in place to ensure that their educators are encouraged to share their struggles if they so choose in order to get the accommodations they may need to best perform. #ONEdChat
This can be anything from improving their work environments (i.g. a classroom with windows that allows for lots of sunlight) or maybe an extra set of hands from a volunteer or teacher’s aide. #ONEdChat
A4 Conversations like these are part of the solution. Changing the way we thinking about #mentalhealth, talk about #mentalhealth, teach it, etc. YOU AND I are the resources that will make a difference, the voices that will evoke change. #ONedchat
A3) I am taking off my mask! I was diagnosed with anxiety in my first year of university. I always found comfort when I was visited by a peer who simply, listened. #ONedchat
A4 - Late to the party, but what is effective with me is talking. I’m a talker and open about anything - if someone asks. Key is asking. Building relationships on the foundation of honesty& trust opens so many door into our hearts and minds. #ONedchat#HeyAreYouAlright
A4: The most useful tools are attached to the sides of my head. Giving someone the gift of listening and your full attention in exchange for the gift they are giving you by trusting and sharing is powerful. #ONedchat
A4: Our board has a variety of ever expanding resources to support admin and teachers to help with the discussions including our fantastic Mental Health lead @mcassidy905 ! Lots offered through @OPCouncil as well. #ONedchat
A4: My natural inclination is to jump in and try to "solve." Often, by letting someone share, without judgement or interruption, or even advice, is what can create a shift. #ONedchat
A4 Going to give a shout out to an organization I just came across this year that has great resources and opportunities available for students to get involved in ending the stigma on #mentalhealth. Check out @jackdotorg ! #ONedchathttps://t.co/pagqQUfjzu
A3 #ONedchat Asist, SafeTalk have both been programs that have helped me working in schools as well as personal situations. Helps with the language and what questions to ask
A5 Teachers can support the conversation in a variety of ways. Social Media is a good way to tweet resources or perhaps events surrounding mental health. They can read books touching on mental health and slowly ease their students into the conversation. #ONedchat
A4/5: This image has sparked positive convo so many times among my Ss knowing it was created by a S. It has served as a reminder to parents/guardians to chat. Simple convos can lead to so much hope for some. #ONedchat
A5 The resource team at my school goes into the classes to talk about the Zones of Regulation with the children and shares breathing and meditation strategies with them as well. #ONedchat
I suffer. Every day, an ongoing battle. In my worst, it was my family who stood up and protected me. Mom, Dad, and Julie. I am blessed. Our colleagues are our family away from home. So treat them as family, because they are. #ONedchat
A5 To bring this discussion into your classroom, check out the Learning About Mental Health Across the Ontario Curriculum https://t.co/e4UgbUszOH#ONedchat
Parents and teachers can be part of ending the stigma around seeing a therapist specialized in the mental health challenges or having a treatment team dedicated to rehabilitating the person suffering. #ONEdChat
A4 Letting people know anxiety, mental health and Learning Disabilities hAve a high comorbidity -information and refocusing Ss on importance of Athletics, Arts and Outside interests are essential and reciprocal to Wellness! Do not ignore the Arts and Athletics! #ONedchat
A5 @SamanthaClusiau and I were both mental health advocates before we set out to create a tool to support the conversation. We decided to create The Lighthouse to fill a gap we heard existed, a need for a resource to teach kids about #MentalHealth. 1/3 #OnEdChat
A5 Parents need to be open to listening to their children and picking up on cues that something is wrong. Parents can also follow mental health initiatives online through social media. #ONedchat
A5 The Lighthouse is a story that aims to educate, support, and remind all those affected by #mentalillness that they are not alone. Through the power of literature and illustration, this open, honest and brave story supports all those who may be suffering in … 2/3 #OnEdChat
A5 Parents and teachers can be part of ending the stigma around seeing a therapist specialized in the mental health issues or having a treatment team dedicated to rehabilitating the person suffering. #ONEdChat
Agreed. @Sandra_Herbst talks about types of listening, and often we are only in the ‘I’m already solving while you’re talking’ mode, rather than truly listening deeply with no judgement. We know when we’re not being heard, and mental health just can’t be ‘solved’. #ONedchat
A4: My natural inclination is to jump in and try to "solve." Often, by letting someone share, without judgement or interruption, or even advice, is what can create a shift. #ONedchat
A4) Being true to who I am. People - kids and adults, see through artificial caring. Humour, Empathy, asking questions and listening to the answers. Acknowledging that I don’t have answers or know what to say. Offering a hug. #tea#ONedchat
They can normalize the idea that talking about their thoughts and issues with a trained professional is not a sign of being ‘’crazy’’. That taking prescribed medication (if needed) is nothing to be ashamed of, attending a support group is does not make one weak. #ONEdChat

A5 ... silence by breaking the very stigma that holds them hostage. The story serves as a symbolic reminder of the support, strength and hope that is represented by the lighthouse, and aims to teach its readers to become a beacon of light in their own communities. 3/3 #OnEdChat
I am a big fan of using thought records to get through situations. There are a number of templates available online. I also think emotion regulation is an incredible tool for mood disorders, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, anger, panic attacks. #ONEdChat
:) Credit goes to a research project led by my Ss a few years ago. Student voice in the change process supports all areas of ending the stigma. #ONedchat
Sometimes offering to be there as they navigate the next steps is what they need to know most. They may ask for suggestions, look into it and ask that you support them further or perhaps be on standby when they need your support once more. #ONedchat
A5 At this point I want to make people aware The Mental Health Hospitals of the Past were used to institutionalize FNMI Peoples in North America. Consult with Elders if you think a Ss is in need of support #ONedchat
A6 I want to recognize Bell Let’s Talk Day by first saying that I am very fortunate to be in a workplace setting that has accommodated my own recovery from an eating disorder over the past 2 years. It saddens me that others aren't so lucky in their work environment #ONEdChat
These convos are important for that exact reason. It means that you're not so different as you may have thought, but instead you have someone you can relate to. Someone you know who'll be there to support you when you speak out. It's not as scary when you're not alone #OnEdchat

The stigma around #mentalhealth needs to change - when ppl have a physical illness (Parkinson's, etc) there is compassion and support - why not for ppl with mental health? #onedchat
I often need to run to therapy and dietician appointments and my employer has been nothing but understanding about the severity of the illness. Being open about my struggle has allowed my workplace to feel very safe when it comes to being clear about my needs. #ONEdChat
A6: Make your students aware of the reality (and severity) of mental illness. #BellLetsTalk is a great way to start a conversation, but it is up to us to continue the conversation and support our peers each and every day #ONedchat
#ONedchat@ChrisNihmey you are now a wonderful advocate and b/c you share your friends and colleagues can help lift you when you need it most. So happy to have Chris give presentations to the staff and students of the #ocsb to being awareness to this important topic!
A6 I am so thrilled that we have something like #BellLetsTalk to look forward to each year - a chance each year for more people to open up about their personal stories, a chance to educate and a chance to support one another. #ONEdchat
Secondly, I hope schools will take this opportunity to read mine and @AmandaBernardo's book The Lighthouse has a way to stir up the conversation on mental health. #ONEdChat#BellLetsTalk
Our hopes with this book are that it won’t just be limited to conversations, which are certainly important, but rather lead to more action in the current school system. #ONEdChat#BellLetsTalk
A6 Join us on #BellLetsTalkDay on Twitter & Facebook. Tweet, share, like. Be the voice to help end the stigma related to #MentalIllness. You may just save a life! #ONedchat
A2: At a meeting talking about setting up a mental health resource centre in our area; and before the meeting started I hear from the back of the room "there goes my OCD" and then laughter. If those who are wanting to help are misusing terms, the stigma won't end. #OnEdChat

I cannot thank my family without thanking God. In my Mania, my faith was shattered, broken, undone. Today, I stand strong. Obviously, regardless of my illnesses, God never let me go. My family followed God’s lead. They, too, never let me go. #ONedchat
Since I work for Bell , I talk about #BellLetsTalk on air daily. I'm always looking for new stories to share on mental health. Public high schoolers may have that day off. It's an extra exam day so lots extra snap chatting time. #ONedchat

A6 Remember - > We need open doors of discussion surrounding #MentalHealth every day, not just on Bell Let’s Talk Day. Let’s keep the conversation going. #HeyAreYouAlright#ONedchat
A6 During the day, I work for the #GOC and will be using this opportunity to inspire my team to talk #mentalhealth. I'm also excited to use this opportunity to share the work we're doing with @LittleVBooks to support the @CMHA_NTL with our newest book The Lighthouse. #ONEdchat
Excellent point OCD is nothing to joke about and the fact that people still joke about things like this shows that we still have a long way to go #ONedchat

Honestly, less focus on concrete grades and specific curriculum expectations during interviews/meetings, and more of a conversation around executive functions, global competencies, empathy and compassion. You learn so much more about the child and their family to help. #ONedchat
Please follow #OECTA member & #OCSB friend and colleague @chrisnihmey. Advocate, survivor, speaker, author and teacher. Chris shares his journey with Mental Illness in his book: Two Sides To the Story - Living A Lie https://t.co/pL7iUk74Hn#ONedchat
We need more support in terms of Guidance, it seems that guidance in schools has been cut back year after year when it should be increasing every year just like ELL support. #onedchat
A6 I will also b using #BellLetsTalk to tell my story. Ive opened up a lot about #Alzheimer's disease & my family's journey with my Nonna & the toll that has taken on us but there's still a lot more I'd like to say about my own story. Each year, I share a little more. #ONEdchat
What a powerful night to rejoin the Twitter chat world! Thanks @ONedchat for the great topic and questions. Thanks @allison_fuisz for hosting and to everyone for sharing so openly. #ONedchat
#ONedchat Have @ChrisNihmey present to your staff, school. Various topics surrounding mental health from Gr. 1 and up to adult. Read his book Two Sides if the Story, or Sally.
