Hey friends! I'm Margaret, HS Tech Coach & cohost of #NoVAedchat! I'm proud of @scigates and the work she and her student team have done to increase the amount of recycling we're doing at school!
A1 I know I am still using too much paper at school which is a negative impact. My straw conversion is my home, positive impact though my son hates it. #NoVAedchat
Earthday is my favorite! The hubs is an environmental scientist so we actually talk about this a lot. Each level of spanish has an environment theme... I twist arms and get the scientists to come in and talk! #NoVAedchat
A1: #fcpson has made a HUGE reduction in the amount of paper I use in class. It’s time for supply orders and I don’t really have anything on the list! Decreased consumption all around! #NoVAedchat
#NoVAedchat A1: We recycle most of our trash. We also keep the thermostat low during winter and high during summer. Windows are normally open unless it's hot.
That sounds like what would happen in my house! We’ve started using the plastic containers... they don’t get tossed as easily but my cabinet is a mess! 🤣 #NoVAedChat

Hi Everyone! I'm Ted Theodorou - 6th grade AAP teacher @RiversideFCPS . Lately, I've become concerned by how much plastic is in the ocean :( #NoVAedChat
A2 Many of the teachers I worth with involve kids in the environment- @surfiniop does an amazing job of it- teaching them about oyster beds and the importance of our waterways! #NoVAedChat
#NoVAedchat A2: Through an Environmental Club, they could help clean up areas of the community, and work with the garden club & District to plant veggies for school lunch.
Can I ask an off-topic question? I love fizzy water :) but hate all the bottles I waste. Yes, cans help... but does anyone use a soda stream? how does it compare to polar or lacroix? #NoVAedchat#ITrustYourOpinions
A2: I think our Ss already have a solid understanding of how their habits have an impact. Some of our science classes do awesome awareness work to help spread good ideas and information! #NoVAedchat
A2: use digital displaying or sharing instead of printing everything out. Have a recycled paper box in your classroom. Encourage them to bring in reuseablw bottles for water. #NoVAedchat
A1: Currently, I recycle at work and at home. We also have a green team at our school that works to increase the amount of recycling in our building. How does your school inspire students and staff to reduce/recycle/reuse? #NoVAedchat
A2: we used to do a free service learning field trip... took Ss into DC to work with scientists who are researching the Anacostia River and we all did an earthday cleanup with a local nonprofit. We had 2 busses our last year! #NoVAedchat
A2 We have a large garden at @mtessharks elem. Local group Green Heart does lessons in our outdoor classroom. Annual May harvest dinner. You-pick for Ts is a perk! #NOVAedchat@CCSDConnects
A3 There are so many connections- obviously with some of the sciences, but also in Social Studies, and in ELA with writing to your representatives about your views & ideas. #NoVAedChat
A2: Currently our 7th graders are beginning a new project growing native rices that will be eventually planted along the Anacostia in order to increase more water filtering! @principalboone1#novaedchat
A3: PBL!!! Nothing like authentic products! In world lang we have a lot of options! Last year Ss researched environmental issues in various countries then wrote letters in the TL to the embassies asking for information. #NoVAedchat
A3: In our STEAM engineering unit, 6th graders have to build wind turbine blades using different materials. However, I tell them that real engineers do not have unlimited budgets. We talk about the concept of efficiency so that they do not waste resources... #NoVAedChat
A3 I think we can talk about the reasons for the choices we make - why we reuse both sides of paper, why we choose not to print something, etc #NOVAedchat Our Ss are always watching our choices and actions!
A4: I’m going with #PBL again! When we give kids REAL ways to apply our content and allow for choice of product, we amplify VOICE! Voice = empowerment! #NoVAedchat
A4 #GeniusHour or #20Time is a possibility to help students see they can really make an impact! I love building in student choice so they can work on something they are passionate about! #NoVAedchat
It's a district wide program run through our @SchmidtCenter@PgcpsScience#novaedchat Not sure about the planting part yet. We still need to coordinate that field trip.

A4: i am at a K3 school. I think it’s important to help inform Ss by allowing for research, observations, etc and help them build background knowledge so they have the mental tools to generate ideas and plans. #NoVAedchat
A5: how do new skills become habits? Routines and reminders! The same way we teach good digital habits, we can teach good environmental habits! #NoVAedchat#earthdayeveryday
A6: Create art using recycled materials. We did this when I student taught and it was amazing. The students had plastic bottles, paper, egg cartons, etc. I can also repurpose materials. #NoVAedchat
