Hi #tlap family, Marley from NC. I am a Digital Learning Coach and getting ready to transition to a STEM Coord/Teacher. Nervous and excited but my hope is that the transition goes smoothly. Want to be able to have a smile like this guy.
A1: Remember that each day is a NEW day to start again! There will be good days and not-so-great days, but when the first bell rings, it's a restart for everyone! #tlap
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
I hope to learn some sweet dance moves from my HS students considering I was told I dance like Elaine from Seinfeld and have a blast learning with my kids. #tlap
A1 Start building relationships before students even step into the classroom! Greet them in the hall, blast some music, enjoy yourself and kids will too! #TLAP
A1: The best advice is to "be where you are". It is SO busy in the beginning of the year and our hearts are a little torn in two as we say goodbye to all the freedom and family time. Being totally present and immersed in the moment is so helpful! #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: Find balance between home and school. At the beginning of the year it's so easy to get caught up and not realize that you've been at school for 14 hours! #tlap
Robyn Jordan, 6-12 curriculum coordinator, Middletown City Schools, OH-excited about re-designing the high school experience and empowering student learning #MiddieRising#tlap
A1: You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Make students want to come back for more. Get them talking about how much they are going to learn in their class and make it a place where everyone wants to be....#tlap
📧 This afternoon I sent out my first classroom Email to the families of my students. Since #teaching is all about building #RELATIONSHIPS I want to #connect with them right away! A fun way to get to learn more about their children and them! #itsWorthit#KidsDeserveIt
Hey #TLAP crew! Greg from Northern California where I get to be an elementary school principal. My hope for the year is that every student and staff member at @DolphinHawks knows that they matter.
A1 The best piece of wisdom I received was to focus on building relationships and routines with my students. It was stressed that if the relationships and routines are there then the learning will take place. #tlap
Hey #tlap - sorry I'm late! Alicia from NC - blood check didn't go as we'd hoped so we had to get blood sugar up & insulin given. UGH! Type 1 Diabetes in an autistic 5 year old is every bit of horrible.
A1. We had a complete remodel of the school one year and everything wasn't "perfect" for the beginning of the year. The administrative assistant looked at me and said the following .....
#TLAP
#tlap This madman once convinced me to start the year with Playdough, after many years still a center. Relaxes and gives them something to do with their hands.
A1 Make the first days more about building community and creating excitement about the learning than policies, procedures, rules. Those are important, but let them be minor. Major on knitting hearts together in the early days (and all the year through). #tlap
A1: I would give a shout out but my buddy is not on Twitter (boo - hiss). But the best gift of wisdom was to remember that the work would still be there in the morning. At some point you have to walk away. It's all about balance! #tlap
A1 - When I first got to the secondary level, my initial lesson was horrible. After it ended, my supervisor said, “ no worries Craig, as long as you love your students, all other stuff will get figured out!” It’s always stuck with me because it’s TRUE! #teachpos#tlap
A1: Don’t jump right into rules on day 1... students certainly need boundaries, structure, and rules, but start with RELATIONSHIP! Team building games, getting to know each other, and bonding are the top priority. #tlap
A1: As a new teacher, I have received many pearls of wisdom. I feel like the best one was to focus on building those positive relationships with the students because that is the foundation that needs to be built upon. #tlap
A1 - I love sharing wisdom, especially with new teachers and colleagues!
No one piece of wisdom has been above others, but combined they share the sentiment I want all my students to KNOW - "I am so glad YOU are here!" #tlap
A1: @AllysonApsey inspired me to pay attention to my students’ 5 basic needs. Starting the year by asking students what their most prominent basic needs were set the tone that I cared about my students as humans and not just about their academics. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1 The best piece of wisdom I got was to build relationships, relationships, relationships during the first day (& week). Avoid the traditional reading/presenting of syllabus, going through expectations. Make the first day EPIC, make them want to learn, & want to come back. #tlap
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Howdy! Brander Brandt from San Antonio, Texas! My hope for this year is that the passion I have for education is ignited within ALL of my students! #TLAP
A1: To Be genuinely happy to see your kids - at the least you’re a consistent presence in their lives, and you might be the only consistent adult presence in their lives... #tlap
A1: #Path2Serendipity#tlap I've received so many nuggets, my favorite two are 1) The year is a treadmill, so remember pace yourself accordingly and 2) Enjoy each moments....they became the entire year before you know it
A1: Smile, be kind, be yourself, and engage &build relationships with the students and parents starting day 0- even before the school year begins. #tlap
Hi! I'm AnnMarie, beginning my 19th year teaching- fourth grade this year. My wish is that all kids in my class know they are important, capable of great things, and loved. #tlap
A1: talked about this in #LearnLAP but worth noting again. College professor taught me 3=33. The tone and climate your create in first 3 weeks of school will last remaining 33 weeks. We have to maintain and build on that foundation daily but the groundwork is laid. #tlap
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: Spend less time on rules and more time on relationships the first weeks. It makes all the difference in the world. Here's a blog I wrote about how I start the year inspired by the pirate himself @burgessdavehttps://t.co/GG5MiTI7Vj#tlap#MLmagical

A1. Weird by smile and wave made my day because I am meet with opposition on trying new things that I need to know that if people want to they will find me if not move on. #TLAP
A1 Relationships are the key and you’ll build them by being your genuine self. If they trust you and know you care they will do anything for you. #tlap
To just breathe and remember to always be yourself and bring a little of who you are in the classroom. It will help the Ss be who they are and that builds relationships. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: I have also loved new advice I gathered from #hivesummit this summer about being intentional and to allow my uniqueness to shine. Another favorite was to "not compare my beginning to someone else's middle" #tlap

So important! They are the people who can really help you get things done, and they are also a wealth of knowledge and a resource! Thanks for giving us the reminder! #tlap
#tlap - A1 - Just like you don't know your students, they don't know you as well. You need to be sure to set the tone, get to know them, and don't worry about academics until you have established relationships. It is not a time for sarcasm and joking - they don't know you yet!

This is so important. Sometimes can be challenging for Ss to believe this is how you operate but learning from missteps when they happen should be the goal. #tlap
A1: One of the best gifts of wisdom I received was from my mentor teacher. She told me to be consistent when following rules and procedures. She also modeled this for me with a lot of kindness!! #tlap#KindnessMatters
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: The start of EVERY school year should have these three phrases etched in the brains of educators: 1️⃣Go SLOW to go FAST!! 2️⃣MODEL, MODEL, MODEL, and 3️⃣BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, RELATIONSHIPS, RELATIONSHIPS! #tlap#KidsDeserveIt#JoyfulLeaders@AllysonApsey
A1: I think the best advice I’ve been given for the start of the year works for any time of the year, too: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” #TLAP
A1 My mentor told me to love them make them feel welcome from the very first minute they step into the room. She reminded me that we all come to school with something heavy in our "backpacks" You have the power to lighten the load and make school special for everyone!#TLAP
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: The best advice I ever received for the beginning of the year was to focus on the RELATIONSHIPS with your kiddos, families, and coworkers and that the learning that follows will be that much more meaningful! #TLAP
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: Best words of wisdom for the beginning of the year... Make the time to create genuine relationships, be authentic and let them learn who you are. Relationships can make or break a year! #tlap
A2: Love this question. We are a guide on the side- not the sage on the stage. So there is no power struggle when we are equal partners in your learning! #TLAP
Matt from Va! Middle School AP
A1: best advice I have received came last year in starting my first AP job. My head principal said “you were a great teacher because of the relationships you created in the classroom. Do the same thing with our Ts & watch what happens!”
#TLAP
#Path2Serendipity#tlap I have to share this nugget from @AllysonApsey book-"By viewing other people's behavior as information, we can better understand what they're really saying to us." This is quote I will keep close to me as I get to know my new school home & serve w/ #Joy
Best role ever!!! ❤️it!
I’m pretty sure @burgessdave@burgess_shelley & @wenders88 prob wouldn’t be ok with that on my email signature line, but it’s ok for chats. Right team?😜☠️ #tlap

A2: When I am inching toward a power struggle with a Ss, I back away slowly by buying us both some time. "Looks like we both could use a minute" works wonders. After the pause we're both able to work through the problem in a way that works for both of us! #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: I am always worried about getting caught up in a power struggle. i try to have private conversations with students as much as possible and remember that every behavior has a story behind it. #tlap
A2: Taking a step back to ask myself about the real reason for any struggle helps. I also try to look students in the eye and make sure I non-verbally communicate that I care before engaging in dialogue. Sometimes, that is all it takes. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: I love to use the phrase WMYST “What Makes You Say That?” It will catch the individual off guard for a moment and make them truly THINK about what they might say to defend, confirm, or solidify their thought/opinion #tlap#LeadLAP#kidsdeserveit@AllysonApsey
I actually wrote about this - three Rs: Remind, redirect, and reteach.
Then, give a choice. Clear result for each choice. Student makes choice, then follow through.
Ultimately once a choice is made, there is no longer a struggle. #tlap
A2 Power struggle eliminators:
1. Clear expectations
2. Choice
3. Strong relationships
If students know everyday when they come in that you are there to be a champion for them, there shouldn’t be a struggle! #TLAP
A2: a power struggle with a student usually means something beyond the classroom. Understand students, build relationships, keep students engaged. #tlap
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: Best words of wisdom for the beginning of the year... Make the time to create genuine relationships, be authentic and let them learn who you are. Relationships can make or break a year! #tlap
A2: I always think “am I pushing this to punish the student or help them refocus their attention/behavior?” It has really helped me avoid issues that wouldn’t support my kiddo or the rest of the class with their learning and enjoying during the day! #TLAP
A2: I use humor to diffuse a lot of tense moments. If I feel a power struggle going on, the S and I go out in the hallway and I ask, "What's up?" usually they say, "Nothing..." and I tell them what I observe and ask what needs to happen next. We usually solve it quick. #tlap
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: The only way to win the war is to strategically lose some battles. Battles about “power struggles” are the ones I don’t fight. If you want it, you can have it! I fight for kids, not for power. I will always win in the end. #tlap
A2: Learned at a Master Teacher seminar to never back Ss into a corner but recently learned about "leaning in" to the emotion of S without caving to it. Acknowledge it but stay firm when necessary. It does suck sometimes, so letting S know you know that isn't always bad. #tlap
A1: Best gift of wisdom was given by our school district's board chairperson who said that the priority for all educators in our district was to love & lead first #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A1: the best gift of wisdom, it’s ok if admin doesn’t agree w/ skipping policies & procedures the first day. Ss are scared, Ts are scared! Let’s just play & get to know each other. We still have 179 more days! #tlap
A2: Listen more than you talk. Taking the time to hear and validate what is being said before responding works wonders. "Listen to understand not to respond." #TLAP
A2 Depends on the setting but usually let them know I need a minute or two before we can continue. This gives us a breather so we can both regroup. Usually ends up in a more productive convo after. #tlap
#tlap a2 Having voice and choice often eliminates power struggles, but often a safe environment, one where risks are encouraged and failure is celebrated is a good remedy.
#tlap - A2 - The student is looking for attention! Don't give them the attention or platform they are looking for. Remain emotionally consistent. Tell them you can discuss it 1:1 later, or if it is disrespectful, ask them to stand outside and have a 1:1 convo with them in private
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q2:. Nod and smile while counting to ten in my head. Realize what things are worth fighting for and figure out a different way to get to a place where you and the student can exist and thrive. Pick your battles. #tlap
A2 It took me a really LONG time, but I learned to pause and inwardly tell myself, "This is not about you. Celebrate this kid. Extend grace. Learn from them in this moment." So hard to break the "I'm the teacher. I'm in charge" syndrome, but so worth it. #tlap
A2 - I think this comes from experience. Personally, I usually try to think if what’s happening is beneficial to kids. Most often we need to separate the problem from the person. Also, bring positive really helps. Learn to 😃, it’s a great way to diffuse a problem. #tlap
A2: In the words of Brian Mendler, have the second to last word - if you demand from a student, “What did you say?!?” then they just say it again and you lose face... pick your battles... #tlap
A2 Approach every conversation & challenge with your heart & your ear. Listen. Listen to understand. Be there for the other person. Let them go through their emotions. Support and talk about possible solutions. Make them feel valued & you avoid struggles. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
#tlap#Path2Serendipity I’m an instructional coach in Northern California. My goal is to maintain the enthusiasm for this school year, no matter what obstacles come my way.
A1: For many of our Ss with challenges it is their year for a fresh start. Don’t let their reputations follow them thru your door. Give them the chance and chances they may not have had with a previous T. #tlap#kidsdeserveit
A2 This has been a struggle. I think it’s building relationships. I’ve learned to take a deep breath and, depending on situation, deal with it later....but you have to make sure you follow up. Also never back yourself into a corner with “if” then. #tlap
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: Time:we all need time to take a minute & think when frustrated. I often give a minute or an offer 2 take a walk. Once a breathe is taken rational convo can be had. I teach 6th graders. They r good 2talk things out. I give them respect & they give it right back to me. #tlap
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: You have to keep the emotion out of the conversation! Emotional responses trigger defensive reactions and then it becomes a battle. Just state the facts and don't let your emotions be the biggest thing in the room! #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Yep. And now you will influence that many more students. That was one of my main reasons to become an administrator- try and be positive influence to as many as possible through positive energy and enthusiasm! Bring it daily! #tlap
A2: I stay calm try to make situations a “teaching moment” never embarrass a student. Have students have a voice and knowing what they should expect from me and what they should expect from themselves can avoid the powe struggle.
A2 I take a breath and we step away give students or others some time including myself we rarely have to solve our differences right then. Time to deescalate can make all the diffetence #TLAP
A2: Always try to see the other person’s perspective, choose your words carefully, stay calm and definitely pick your battles wisely. #tlap#path2serendipity
A2
JUST REMEMBER...
💕🖤💗🖤💗🖤💗💕
"It's not supposed to be easy.
It's supposed to be worth it."
-@burgessdave
💕🖤💗🖤💗🖤💗💕
Take a breath, smile, and listen.
#TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: One way I avoided power struggles was to get to know my students. I knew the students who were more likely to push back. I also tried to remember not to take things personally. When you teach high school this is Rule #1! #tlap
A2: Always de-escalate. I see if kid needs some time to walk or sit out in our courtyard to cool off. Then when ready, I chat away from other kids and ask questions to find out the heart of what's going on. Usually nothing to do with me. #tlap#MLmagical
A1: Don’t listen when you are told you cannot smile until Christmas. Smile each and every day. Welcome your students and set the stage to engage. Spend time every day building relationships with your students. #tlap
A2: Don’t be a contributor to a power struggle. It’s a lose lose situation and YOU are the adult. Instead reframe, ask questions until you find the root of frustration. #tlap
A2: Being a former behavior specialist . . . I learn to observe and recognize small changes.
When the struggle begins, I disengage and give the Ss some time then come back and debrief. #tlap
A2: I always think “am I pushing this to punish the student or help them refocus their attention/behavior?” It has really helped me avoid issues that wouldn’t support my kiddo or the rest of the class with their learning and enjoying during the day! #TLAP
A2b - If the struggle is with kids, it’s best to listen intently and be patient. Being able to reflect on a situation is huge for the teacher and student. #tlap
A2: one strategy that our principal has put into place for this year deals with cell phones. She has stated that if a child has a cell phone out in class, we as teachers are to immediately request for admin to come into the classroom to handle the situation #tlap
A2 we never know what’s up with a Student and what they have going on in their life. They may just need some time to work through their own issue before we talk. i let them have some time then we talk one on one later. That way I can help with what might be going on. #tlap
A2 don’t take it personal and remember I don’t have to react to save face. Get on their level, provide choices.
To back out, “im going to help some others over there and I will come back to check on you.” #TLAP
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q3: Another tool every educator needs is the “Emotions Deflector”. When you wear this, the negative emotions of others bounce right off you and you get to keep your own emotions. Describe what you do to avoid letting Mr. or Mrs. Grumpypants ruin your day. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: When I was a younger, a veteran teacher told me to never argue with a child. This has served me well the last 17 years. (I’ve failed a few times mind you!) Just state the facts and give students choices. It gives them an out. #tlap
A2: Like with parenting, choose your battles. Not everything needs to be negotiated or "fought over". Wait! So both sides can calm down and relax and then invite student to a conversation about the issue and see if you both can reflect on what happened and reach resolution #tlap
A2. It's key to have the self-awareness to realize it's happening in the moment. A major part depends on the students as well and learning about how they respond to certain situations. #tlap
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: I stop and talk about the kids dream. I have all my students write a dream for their life and I open them constantly. I shift the conversation to their goals and remind them I'm there to help not to hinder their dreams. ❤️ #TLAP
A2: When students are vying for power in the classroom, it usually means that I haven't given them enough choice to determine their own path of learning. I like to sit down and help the student develop a plan to be successful and start to build a stronger relationship. #TLAP
A2: I have found that stepping back, taking a huge breath, and re-framing the situation helps. Along with that, I try to infuse humor into tense situations to return things to normal. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A2: In the middle of a power struggle, I try to stop and reflect on what I did to cause the problem. Sometimes just saying I’m sorry and asking what we can do to make it better helps. #TLAP
A2: Stay positive. Remain calm. Brainstorm together, offer solutions/alternatives. Sometimes silence is a great "de-escalation technique." Never to exert power because it just makes the situation worse. "All you needis just a little patience..." #tlap
A2(2): Power struggles with kids are won well before class starts. A purposeful plan, executed with charisma and passion is extremely difficult to defuse for a student. I work to win over the other 31 kids. Once I do that, the one begins to fake it before they make it. #tlap
A3: i choose to remain positive. I refuse to let them spread their negativity - I own my own emotions and that's MORE than enough for any one person to handle anyhow. #tlap
A2 Wow, great question. I guess I might ask to talk to the student away from everyone else, or have him/her go get a drink and talk when they get back. Power struggles are few, but can be tough! #tlap
We do it with toddlers. "I know you miss mommy" kind of thing but we don't take them to see mommy (when babysitting or whatever). Teens and older children need it too. #tlap
A3 It is all about my own mindset. I start my day with some reflections, positive thoughts & kind inspirations. I keep my smile all day long. I always think of what my students need & what I can bring to the table. My PLN is always there to keep me positive! #tlap
A2: Stop and think about the student's perspective; don't take it personal; stop and actively listen to what the student is trying to communicate; they want to be heard #tlap#MiddieRising
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2: Build positive relationships. Make sure students know you care about them. Stay positive. Remain calm. Help them identify what is upsetting them. Listen. Truly listen. #tlap
A2: I tell my kiddos that there are rules at school and rules at home and sometimes those rules are different. That seems to stop the power struggle in most cases. #tlap
A2: I try to think before I act. If what they want to do really isn’t harmful or disruptive to the class why fight it as long as they are working. #TLAP
A3: I need my amazing Emotions Deflector every day! The simple act of reminding myself that I am wearing it and that I get to be in charge of my own emotions helps so much. I love you Mr. Grumpypants, but I am not letting you control me.
A3: I had a moment happen to me a few days ago when someone made it a point to remind me that I have summers off. It broke my heart because I really do pour myself into this profession. I just didn't respond to the comment due to feeling hurt, but I should have. #tlap
A3: As @casas_jimmy says- either we can choose to think everything is great or everything is the worst. It’s an easy choice. We do have negativity in our profession and ABOUT our profession. Being overly positive around those folks only isolates their negativity even more #tlap
My absolute favorite Ted Talk of all time and great message about the importance of starting with and continuing to build relationships #tlap#path2serendipity
A3: Positivity is a choice. Is it always easy? No... Is it always worth it? YES! Taking time to stop and choose to be positive has helped me surround myself with other positive people who encourage and support each other! #tlap
A3 - Really, other's emotions or reactions don't (shouldn't) impact my own happiness. For sure it's a (challenging) skill to learn, but sticking to things within my area of influence is a great lesson that I learned as recently as last year! How to do it? Practice! #tlap
A3: Sometimes I just need to take a short walk to decompress. Connecting with my PLN on Twitter always refuels my soul and coming home to my kids reminds me of my "why!" #tlap
A3 We are the creators of our own happiness. Have a short term memory of the negative. For the kids we have to be the brightness in their day. If we aren’t creating a safe positive space we are not doing our jobs! #TLAP
A3 seek out positive people and realize I control how I feel/handle myself. Also do as @mradamwelcome suggests and cut ties with those who don’t add value to the relationship. #tlap
Agreed and one of us has to be the adult! What is the root cause? What can I do to help? So important to invest in our students emotional banks. Let them know you care. #tlap#covey
A3) my most challenging kiddos- when I leave I think of one thing that kiddo did during the day I write it on a post it- it lets me end my day on a good note and I start their day with remember yesterday when you did...that was so cool I can’t wait to see what you do today! #TLAP
A3: A great piece of advice I got was to listen, say, “Well, that’s one way to look at it,” then walk away. The grumps will stop coming after awhile! #TLAP
A2: Stay positive. Remain calm. Brainstorm together, offer solutions/alternatives. Sometimes silence is a great "de-escalation technique." Never try to exert power because it just makes the situation worse. "All you need is just a little patience..." #tlap
A3 Realizing I didn’t cause the grumpiness let’s me stay upbeat. Often I will ask if everything’s okay to attempt to reduce the grumpiness or uncover issues that I may need to support. When encountering grumpy, need to be even more happy! #tlap
Yep! Always assume positive intent. Keeping a smile on your face is the best way to handle it. Attitudes are contagious & I want mine to be worth catching. #tlap
A3: It’s a mindset. You choose how you react to others. It may not always be so easy and sometimes you just need to walk away from the negativity. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A3: I focus on the positive and when people try to dump their grumpypants perspective all over my day, I simply point out a positive for them to focus on. After so many positives pointed out they usually change their perspective or walk away. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A1: as a band teacher, I normally have the same kids from year to year, but it’s the same kids, but a new group each year, and the first days are about team building, and establishing the new norms for the year. Each group is different! #tlap
A3: Simple... A SMILE. 😃 Ask Mr/Mrs. Grumpypants... “How can I help you?” OR “I’d love for you to tell me more about...” OR “I noticed you said/were looking this way, can you share with me why...” Ask open-ended Q’s to show you CARE! ❤️ #tlap@AllysonApsey
A3: I whistle. I whistle everywhere I go in our building. Whistling is the international language for “look at this great mood I am in!” Also if you can get mr or Mrs grumpy pants talking about something they enjoy, you can typically change their tune pretty quickly! #TLAP
A3: My #joy is my armor-I really activate my #empathy ears and #mindful communication strategies when dealing w/ challenging adults-I know they hurt people hurt and healing people heal right @hollorans? #Path2Serendipity#tlap
A2 try not to take things personally take a deep breath before answering try to use good body language try not to be defensive keep a quiet voice don't argue in front of a crowd keep things private #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A3: Avoid the energy vampires; when feeling the negativity get to you immediately stop and think of something that you are grateful for #tlap#MiddieRising
A3: A wise man, my Edu-Hero, told me "You need to remember that oftentimes the behavior has nothing to do with you." Stay calm and ask, "What do you need from me?" #tlap
A3: Shower them with kindness, smile lots, and brush it off. Sometimes they just need a listening ear. Never know what is going on in their lives that's making them grumpy. #tlap
A3 - I call it “promise!” First day of school is a promise to enter every class with a smile and positive attitude. It’s a complete game changer. Totally influences most students. The ones who are sad, try a little harder. #tlap
A3: There is so much negativity in the world. I want to help students be beacons that light the world. I can't do that if I'm negative. Set the example and remember that students are negative, your relationship might need work. Same is true for our teacher relationships. #tlap
Chris from SoCal, my hope for this year is for our kids to thrive and prove all haters wrong. Kids will rise to any call when they know they’re loved. I’ll always love this community and these kids we serve. #tlap#relentless#disruptor
#tlap -A3 First, it is unreasonable to expect that teaching will be all good days. It is a roller coaster. That said, if a S is being negative, I just reply with something overwhelmingly positive, and it really takes them aback and throws them off, since they expect more negative
A2: w/ admin or ss? 😳 oh good, w/ss! I’m willing to walk away, I don’t care if the ss has the last word, when they are done, we can chat. They know I will love them, but I will not argue with them. Ss are empowered when they can walk over & have a mindful moment together #tlap
A3: My small circle consists of people who respect me&support me as well as give me feedback when needed. I tend 2 focus on the good. It makes me happier & am at a point in my career where I have trust in what I believe is good 4 my classroom &my students #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A3) my most challenging kiddos- when I leave I think of one thing that kiddo did during the day I write it on a post it- it lets me end my day on a good note and I start their day with remember yesterday when you did...that was so cool I can’t wait to see what you do today! #TLAP
A3: I tend to be incredibly positive. If I begin to feel negative for any reason, I seek God and my teaching neighbors who are oozing positivity too. I absolutely love my Ss, so it's easy to come back bc someone is bound to make me laugh or smile #TLAP
Q3: I have a large jug that I turned into a “gratitude jar”. I put positive things in it that remind me of why I teach. Ex. A thank you from a student or parent. When I feel my deflector getting bombarded, I dip in my gratitude jar and start to read. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A3: Can be tough, but visualizing that I'm a duck & the negativity is water that just rolls off my back. If that fails, choclate, a Coke Zero, and 5 minutes alone help. I also seek out friends who are positivity spreaders. They help brush away the negative Nelly influence. #tlap
A3 Just try to keep focused on the positive, remember what my purpose is and just smile, when I can, listen and support and try to change to more positive #tlap#path2serendipity
A3. We all have the emotions detector, we take it in stride and move on. Mr. Grumpypants will not ruin my day! This is his behavior, and how he chooses to behave! #tlap
A3: Love on Mr. Grumpypants! Smile. I pray a lot. Think before you feed into negativity. Choose to see the glass overflowing. Smile. And smile some more. #tlap
Choice is powerful!! Also-Planned Ignoring, reinforcement of others who are doing desired behavior, Zones of Reg toolkit prompts, timers, self-talk. I have kept a QTip taped to my desk since my first year of teaching as a visual to “quit taking it personally” #tlap
A3: the best part of working with kids is that you can quickly shake your grumps away. but when you can't, it's important to own your feelings and the place you are in. Let Ss and colleagues know you're having an off day, if you've built relationships, they'll be patient! #tlap
A3: There are rarely bad days just bad moments, never bad students just striving learners, rarely bad parents just parents who are doing the best they can. Your attitude is a large factor in determining your success. Own it! #tlap
A3: Remember that it’s not personal. I am only 80 minutes of this kid’s day and they are worried about many things that have nothing to do with me. If you have no ego, there is no ego to bruise. #tlap
A3Lots of tools, and it depends. Walk away, ask if everything is okay, change the subject, smile, compliment, bring them a soda, tea, or cookie.... #tlap
A3: Seek out a friend, spend a few minutes listening to my happy music, send an encouraging email or note, look back at notes from years past. Try to put it in a bubble and blow it away. #tlap
A3 Teaching 6th graders, there tend to be emotions all over the place. Having a good sense of humor and not taking Ss and other teachers emotions to heart is important. Seeing the positive side in things works for me to change those bad moods.
A3: That one is hard for me because I’m all about being empathetic! If someone is negative around me, I acknowledge what they’re saying, but then I try to cancel it out with double the positive ideas-whether it’s about themselves, students, or events! #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A3 when they are rude be kind, when they are disrespectful be kind when they are mean be kind when they are hateful be kind. Glances are it has nothing to do with you and they need a kind compassionate adult that won’t give up on them #TLAP
A3: Just remember that everybody has those days and don’t take it personally. Remember your purpose and that you’re responsible for you! A reaction says more about you than them. #tlap
A3: I focus on the kids. I remind myself that I am there for THEM and not for drama/frustration/unhappiness. I engage our classroom (or just myself!) in a #kindness project to help up the AWESOME and downplay the negativity in my mind. #tlap
A3 Love to lead with empathy and then exit with JOY. "Ohh,(and other apropriate, genuine empathetic noises). I'm off to learn to with my littles. Here's to a stellar day!" #tlap
#Path2Serendipity nugget#2 from @AllysonApsey book: "When people say cruel things, it says a lot about them than it say about you; people who feel good about themselves do not insult others...this book is SO GOOD. #tlap#JoyfulReads
A2: using appropriate tone/approach goes a long way to prevent the power struggle. As a principal I often just walk into a potentially explosive environment or heated exchange and quietly remove the student. I will then give the student and teacher time to cool down. #tlap
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2 I’m jumping in and out tonight but I recommend reading Conscious Discipline by Becky Bailey. Helps us be mindful of our own thoughts and actions to better understand others and helps prevent those terrible power struggles that we never will win at! #tlap
A3: I have mentioned this before: After I use my Emotions Deflector, I take Mr./Ms. Grumpypants to meet Mr./Ms. Enthusiasticpants. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A3: Find silver linings, try to make light jokes - if appropriate. Sometimes a good laugh can lighten a mood or situation. Often times people just need someone to listen to them for a quick vent session. #tlap
A3: I go out of my way to brighten their day. My dad always said to kill them with kindness. . I'll send them chocolate, stickers, or fruit snacks with a note that I'm there for them. Everyone has bad days and we need to be there for each other.❤️ #TLAP
A3: shift the monkey back on them by sharing why we should be happy or at least grateful. Apologizing for their grumpiness also helps even if you weren’t the cause. #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Got to jump out and put some kids to bed! First day has worn them out. @AllysonApsey LOVE your book and all the amazing info it offers to educators and people in general! So glad I got to sit in on this for even a few minutes! #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A3. Stay positive even if someone tries to ruin your day. Good chance they won't even try again if they don't get a reaction. Also, a very important skill for our students to see. Always keep that positive attitude even when things go crazy. #tlap
A1: My best gift of wisdom came from one of my favorite admin of all time (Senida Wade) who said to look at those class rosters like we look at gifts that we’re about to open. Be just as excited to meet those kids as we are to open those gifts. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q1: Tonight we will talk about three tools every educator needs for the new school year. Before we dive into them, please describe the best gift of wisdom someone gave you about the start of the school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A3: As soon as Grumpypants starts, I try to listen... really listen... to see if I can understand WHY. Typically, grumpyness stems from fear. When we understand THAT, we will understand ourselves and (hopefully) keep our emotions in check. #TLAP
I also have a series of “B-DAWG” cards, one says “it looks like you’re having a ‘ruff’ day, remember the pack’s got your back” - and they get chocolate to keep the Dementors away or some other candy... #tlap
A3- “When your only rool is a Hammer, you see every problem as a nail.” To me anger or posturing is a hammer. Develop relationships with kids and suddenly you’ve got a whole new toolbox. #TLAP
A3: I’m tennis I teach this - being an actor/actress - even if you’re having the worst day ever, smile and find positives in your day. Act like you’re having the best day you’ve ever had. #tlap
A3 pick your battles. you have to know when to shake it off. there may be some situations where you need to follow up on the issue but not at that time. #tlap
A3: It all starts by choosing to be positive. As supt, I had a hard time accepting the balloon poppers of life or C.A.V.E people (colleagues against everything). Let them know my attitude is what I choose - they have to model the same #tlap
A3: There are rarely bad days just bad moments, never bad students just striving learners, rarely bad parents just parents who are doing the best they can. Your attitude is a large factor in determining your success. Own it! #tlap
A4: I control me. I build trust with my Ss, so that if I'm being "salty," they know they can point that out to me (nicely) so that I can check myself. Will bring in Yoga mindfulness/breathing when even one of us needs it. All for one and one for all! #tlap
A3: deep breathing, refocusing and paradigm shifting back to “the behavior isn’t a personal attack or about me...” it’s communicating a need/deficiency I need to teach or adjust #tlap
A3, part 2- Also, you have to train yourself to pause, breath, and then act. We expect our dysregulated kids to do the same so we might as well model it, yeah? #TLAP
A3: Everyday is a new day. It’s okay to vent every now & then but it’s not okay to wallow in it. I think about my why/my purpose & it puts everything else in perspective. Things that hinder me from fulfilling that purpose are just distractions & do not deserve my attention. #tlap
A4: I've got a big personality and try to spread an infectious joy. I've had students in the past ask why I always smile. I also have other students who check in on me if I'm not smiling. Building a relationship of trust and joy are powerful influencers! #tlap
A4: Ss prickly behavior can turn a great day upside down in an instant. When we are wearing our Emotions Deflector, we remind ourselves that we get to determine how the classroom feels, no matter what. A deep breath and a genuine smile really help! #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
"Which of these 4 words most reflects you as an educator? Explain why!" Create, Improve, Transform, Disrupt. This was one of the questions ask last wk from #K12ArtChat host @KimSnodgrass Share using #SlowK12ArtChat#tlap
A4: We all have emotions. It is hard because I am a sensitive and empathetic person to begin with, but I do try to have those individual conversations and get to the heart of what is going on. I want my students to know they are loved, respected, valued, and cared for. #tlap
A4: I feel like this really is determined by the relationships you’ve made in the classroom and that has to be a positive one with every student. Be consistent. Don’t let behaviors linger, address them ASAP and 1on1. #TLAP
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: Be proactive and not reactive. By encouraging a culture of risk-taking, a student who is struggling won't be as big of an issue. Encouragement and genuine belief that our Ss CAN be successful makes your classroom a great place to be, even on the rough days. #tlap
A3: Ohhhhh good question!! This can be hard to do sometimes if they have their deflector on too! I have found the best thing for me to do is smile, nod my head, and keep walking! #tlap Find a positive colleague or person to be around. Find your marigold! https://t.co/d5qGaHahnB
A2: I always like to give non-verbal cues to be as least invasive as I can. I believe in praising publicly and punishing privately. We’ll have a private convo where neither of us needs to “lose face” #TLAP
A3b - in most of these answers it’s about making a choice to be a difference maker. There will always be issues that come our way. Lots of personal reflection and love of job make the difference. #tlap
A4 We are the lead learners everywhere we go in the school! The vibe of our class comes from the culture we create! It is our job to create experiences that empower our students so that they buy in! #TLAP
A3 you have to model a positive attitude. Students have to feel the class is theirs and you are in it together they have to know you believe in them and won’t give up on them #TLAP
A2: Always stay calm and show you truly care about the well-being of the student. It seems so simple but simple works. Like I used to tell calculus students, let it be easy sometimes because there will be many times when you have to work through hard.
A4: We are educators for ALL students, no matter the emotional outbursts that may occur throughout the day. Keeping calm with a smile and offering reassurance helps keep the class on track moving forward instead of stalling at the gate! #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
I am going to start one this year. I also thought of having a jar w/positive quote/messages in it so Ss could pick one when they need a little boost to carry around with them. #tlap
A4 - This is pretty related to A3, but imo a bit easier (dealing w/ students, not adults). For me, most important is to understand that the student is learning, and that it is okay for them to make mistakes. Keeps me in a teacher role and not a reactor! #tlap
A4: A school year is an absolutely roller coaster filled with ups and downs. We aren't immune from it- especially in our personal and professional lives. We just have to be the adult the always pulls it back towards the middle. #tlap
A4 It is important to build a trusting envrionment for students. Create a feeling of calm, of respect, of empathy. Have your own protocols to take the time and talk with a student when emotions run high. Let them know they are seen and heard. Never diminish their feelings. #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4 this can be tricky. I think you create a + class environment by letting go of some of the control. Work towards a student centered classroom where Ss do have voice and choice. Be engaging as well! #tlap
A4: Energy and tone. Reading #TLAP this summer reaffirmed a lot. I think you have to create the environment. If need be I legit call a “Timeout” and discuss the vibe of the room—usually if it’s strong enough to overcome my vibe it’s big enough to discuss. #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: Be a positive role model. Be real. Show students how to work through emotions in a healthy manner. Model a growth mindset. Embed social skills into your teaching. Provide positive feedback. Be the champion for all students. #tlap
Yes! In a power struggle, the upset one wants the last word. Instead of going back & forth, which is pointless, allow the student to have the last word. You, on the other hand, have the second-to-last-word!🤗 #Tlap#CelebratED
A4: Establish a positive classroom environment leading by example; Be a Chief Energy Officer; positive energy is contagious; spread kindness #tlap#MiddieRising
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
I assure you Belinda-you will love it so much, you will want to buy a Kindle copy and hard copy! It stays with me at all times! #Path2Serendipity#tlap@dbc_inc
A4: Preparation is key. I believe that being prepared and having contingencies in place plays a huge role. On the flipside, if you have the environment in place, you have to be able to know when your emotions are at a tipping point. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A4: Make it feel homey. Sometimes our classrooms are more home than the ones our students come from. Create a safe, nurturing space where students feel comfortable taking risks. Set that tone from day 1 #tlap#path2serendipity
I love this reminder of encouraging a culture of risk-taking. Isn't it the BEST when you see students encouraging one another? That's when you know all that hard work has paid off! #tlap
Got to jump out and put some kids to bed! First day has worn them out. @AllysonApsey LOVE your book and all the amazing info it offers to educators and people in general! So glad I got to sit in on this for even a few minutes! #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A4: Breaks are never assigned but encouraged to take independently. Kids that feel relaxed and not held so tightly actually work more productively and feel better emotionally. #tlap
A4: As an assistant principal my job is to help teachers reflect not only on the culture but climate of their classroom. How does it feel to them? What evidence do they have? What would like to improve? And then it’s my job to praise and encourage our teachers! #tlap
A4 It's always up to us (Ts) to start the day with positive emotions. Greeting kids at the door, acknowledging Ss and their lives (Cool shoes, man) telling by words and actions that I'm flat out "living the dream" as a part of our learning community. #tlap
A4: These ten tips from @gcouros are at the forefront of all I do in our classroom. They help to determine our classroom culture each day. I have them posted and when I am struggling I take a look at which culture enhancer I can immediately add in the moment! #tlap#Kindergarten
A4: With consistent expectations and an open heart. My Ss know they can always talk to me. We have work to do but we are in this journey together. We share our problems and our successes and still aim to get things done every day #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Yvette Benavidez from NISD SA TX
Q3 There should be a genuine interaction with everyone you encounter and especially when they are grumpy. They are grumpy for a reason and no need to mirror just model the right behaviors. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity@NISDLosReyes
A4 - Same answer! Positivity and loving what you do. 99 percent of the time that will work. In a situation that is difficult, learning about your students first is key. Know their body language and expressions. Ask them how they are doing? It’s little things that matter. #tlap
Q4: Most important variable is how you relate to Ss, challenge = creating emotionally safe environment without relinquishing your role as teacher. Ss need to know you're in charge of classroom & relationship w/ students, while remaining caring.#tlap
A3 This past year was toughest for this, from all angles, but you just try and vibrates a higher frequency...and I have a life mantra that I speak everyday to kids that “Every day you wake up is a good day” & I get 🙄 but they learn why I have that mantra & it deflects negativity
A1: My best gift of wisdom came from one of my favorite admin of all time (Senida Wade) who said to look at those class rosters like we look at gifts that we’re about to open. Be just as excited to meet those kids as we are to open those gifts. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity

A4: Calm.Fair. Consistent. Many of our Ss come from chaotic, trauma-filled homes. It is my duty and passion to provide a consistent and safe place for my kids! #tlap
A4: I make sure I get enough rest and have “emergency” snacks in my room. I also play music to create the mood I want to evoke for the day. It is for me as much as it is for my kiddos. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: I don't want to be the one to determine how the classroom environment feels. I want the kids to set up the environment and let students give me ideas to add to it and change it to make it their school home. When a kid truly feels at "home" they struggle less. #TLAP
A4 I feel like this is where student voice is most important. If we start from day one coaching the Ss on how to share their voice productively and positively you will gain their trust and respect and set the tone for the year. #tlap
#tlap - A4 - Your teaching personality just needs to be bigger than the student's personalities. I teach middle school, so there are a lot of little personalities going on, but my crazy can beat them any day!
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: from a leadership perspective, we set the tone for our environment. Model what you seek and don’t get caught in the trap of responding to negativity negatively. (This is tough sometimes!) #TLAP
A4: I actually don’t think I determine that alone. I try to empower my students with the belief that they have as much to do with how the classroom operates as I do. It’s a collective responsibility in our classroom community. #TLAP
A4: As a classroom teacher with paraprofessionals, I make sure that we're all on the same page and working together to create a safe and welcoming environment that the students want to be a part of. #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
I just wanted to give a shoutout to @AllysonApsey. She is truly incredible and has impacted my life in more ways than one. Her positivity and kindness will truly move mountains. I am so honored to connect with her! #tlap
A4: acknowledge the problem then redefine the solution. A student or students may have a valid reason for being down. Show them grit and positivity #tlap
A4: I reflect on my own emotions and attitude every day, just like I ask my students to do. I use my own coping strategies & resources to help when needed to keep the right mindset. Sometimes it’s as simple as listening to my favorite song before a lesson! #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: It is the teacher's job to lay the groundwork for positive interactions in the classroom throughout the year. We need to make sure that we are helping students learn how to be good people. Only then will they be able to help us build a positive classroom environment. #tlap
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: Deeply embedded culture from day one. Then, let's be honest, I'm going to mess this up...so willingness to admit when I am wrong. I also believe in extending grace to Ss so they will extend it to me, keeping conflict private, and respecting every student. #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4.We want to create a culture of risk-taking, kindness, empathy and encouragement! Modelling appropriate behavior and also using empathy for Ss in situations. #tlap
A4 Stay positive and model genuine actions that Ts can model too. Let’s Ss see collegial interactions and help them develop their own skills in this area. #tlap
A4: People are energy. How one feels can undoubtedly affect another. Be transparent @ the whys in your classroom. Spend/allocate time on things that you value-collaboration, critical thinking, community, respect. #culture of class is set by u while Ss nurture that culture! #tlap
A4 Set the tone by being real, being that role model, and reading your room. Know your students, their strengths, and how to cultivate your community of learners. #Path2Serendipity#tlap
Now that I've heard you talking on your Instagram videos, I can "hear" your tweets in your voice! Love following your room transformation! It's going to be an amazing year for you and your students, Roman! #tlap
Great idea! I give my students 1-2 minute breaks every 15-20 minutes during block-period days. They are more productive knowing that they will be able to have a snack or check their cell phone "soon." #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: Take care of you - Work out. Follow your passion outside of work. Embrace your spiritual journey. You can only pour yourself out for your kids if you are full enough to be poured out. #TLAP
A4 as an administrator I believe it is on me to set a positive tone for the building. I can’t let others move me in the wrong direction. Stay focused and positive because we all need that someone who can get us through, that’s part of my role at my school! #tlap
A4: The peer culture is a powerful moral teacher & influences behavior. If Ts don't shape the culture, it can create peer norms in opposition to good character.
By being part of a caring community, students learn morality by living it. #tlap
A1: A little late to the party, but some of the best BOY advice I have ever heard was focus on relationships! Always take the time to invest in your classroom culture #tlap
A4 I got a lot better at this when I realized that by asserting that I was in charge, I wasn’t. Instead I pause, think, reflect on my training and our time together. I choose to work with rather than do to. And I work hard to build community on the front AND the back. #TLAP
A4: Build relationships from day 1! Make your classroom a place where students want to come and not leave. Look at your room from their perspective. Would you want to be a student in your class? #tlap
YES!! You don't have to have a full-fledged circus in your classroom to reap the rewards of student empowerment. (Although a circus can be fun at times...lol) Love this, Lance! #tlap
A3: Again, listen and partner with Grumpypants in addressing his/her concerns. We’re all human and crave authenticity. We all want to know we matter and are valued on a human level. Our profession requires a tremendous amount of heart and humanity.
We are going to focus on #TLAP TEACH LIKE A PIRATE, just finished reading Passion section today. And every time we start a new section we will add to it using #AUSDbooksnaps 💚😊please join us!
A4: shifting attn back to rest of class and positively recognizing desired behavior works so much in keeping environment calm and on task during moments of disruption, I model & practice this over and over at beg of year especially. #tlap#pathtoserendipity
A5: I think it helps you focus on the good in others. Instead of looking for a motive, and angle, or something to gain- assume best intentions. We owe that, at least, to everyone. #TLAP
A4: When Ss are having terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad days, I try to see their outburst as an invitation to help. To love them even more. I try to remember that the other students are watching and in that moment, I’m teaching them, too. #TLAP
A4: We as teachers really do determine the class environment, it is up to us to leave our baggage at the door and be the best teacher we can daily! #TLAP
A5: Not only is the naive approach helpful, it is accurate. Everyone I have ever met wants good things for themselves, they just sometimes don't know how to get it. The naive approach allows you to approach others with a "how can I help?" attitude. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: Creating a positive classroom environment. It is important to make the Ss who are struggle not feel insignificant. However, giving positive feedback can make Ss want to try harder and not give up. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5 - I am not sure it's naive to assume the best - I think it's strong personal philosophy. Why go through life otherwise?
I assume the best, and until I have information that tells me otherwise about an individual or situation, I will continue doing so. #tlap
A4: #Path2Serendipity#tlap I'm going to take this answer right from the book, "I have learned that to my students succeed, I needed to plan empowering & meaningful learning opportunities, guide them...and teach them to meet their needs" C.R.A.F.T-get the book-it's a jewel!
A4) Creating the safest warm & open environment that we can, helps with this. Kids who feel liked & accepted as a person will feel a sense of belonging which is critical or emotional social well being. #tlap
A5 Assuming the best intentions in every collaboration and discussion! If we come in with the assumption that everyone wants what is best for kids we can work our way straight to kid victories! #tlap
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: I think it allows us to put blinders on to the drama around us. We all know the Ts and Ss that carry the drama on their back. Spray the Naive Body Spray and you avoid it like the plague. #tlap
A3&4 I have a “Feel Good” folder (physical one, an email one & one on my desktop) where I keep sweet comments people give me—letters, emails, anchors of appreciation, text messages, pics, etc
When things are yucky, I read them. Changes my attitude. #SelfHelp😜❤️ #tlap
A4: There are days I’m positive and upbeat, and days I have to force myself to be positive and upbeat. Anything else is just not an option. Sometimes the days I start out “faking” it are the best days, because we usually lift everyone out of it by 2nd period! Set the tone! #tlap
A5 I always start the school year with rose colored glasses! I always assume/know that all my students will be and are awesome! It’s my job to help them show off how great they really are! #kidsdeserveit#TLAP
A5: If you ALWAYS assume GOOD INTENTIONS then you WILL send off #PositiveVibes We are TRULY a VILLAGE of EDUCATORS working together towards one sole purpose: to build a community of learners and global citizens who will CHANGE the 🌎 #TLAP#itsWorthit#KidsDeserveIt@AllysonApsey
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A4: I feel like I maybe do not understand this question. I am not always the emotional gauge of the room. Sometimes the events of the day play a bigger role but maybe that is something I need to work on. #tlap
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: A quote I hate is "You can't win them all." You can call me naive if you want, but it won't stop me from trying to create a meaningful and lasting relationship with every single one of my students. #tlap
A5: Believe, truly believe, that we are all on the same team AND we all want the very best for each other. Use this mindset to help row the boat together. As @jallisonOPS would say, “Be relentless in your pursuit of excellence.” #tlap
A4: I play music in the room and I love words of affirmation so use it constantly, because when I am positive and give affirmation they start giving it to each other and even me too sometimes. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: I think I have a LOT of stock purchased in this product, lol. Assume positive intent! A smile speaks loudly in assuming everyone wants good things. Embrace listening for those who don't have the spray! #tlap
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q5 We should always see the best in others until they prove otherwise, I don’t believe that is a bad approach. I am personally working on seeing the positives and focusing on those... we have too much negative already! #tlap
A5: I feel like I am a little naive, but it really does help me stay positive. I like to think that everyone is doing the best they can with the cards that they have been dealt. I try to keep that in mind and help my students see that I am always there for them. #tlap
A5: Being naïve is really about not being cynical. I refuse to believe that people do things only for their own benefit. That means students and colleagues. Call me naïve but I believe in people. #tlap
A5 Working w/Parents-even when we feel that some may be challenging or disengaged at times, they all want the best for their children as much (probably more) than we do. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A5: “Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay… small acts of kindness and love.” -Gandalf #tlap
A5 Assume that every educator is willing to do ANYTHING to help kids. Even when you know some might say no, approach naïvely and always ask. Approach by sharing the type of impact it will have. Assume they will say yes, you never know. ;) #tlap
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: I have built in Naive Body Spray in that it's easy for me to assume positive intentions with Ss most of the time (a bit harder w/adults) & I make sure I start fresh (new day) every time. No holding grudges for previous bad decisions. #tlap
A5: this allows anyone to focus on doing what’s right and approaching situations with a positive mindset instead of questioning and becoming negative. #tlap
A5- Alternativley, no one sets out to be the villain of their own story. Kids do stuff we don’t like bc they aren’t regulated enough or don’t know how to do it another way. So, help them regulate back down and then problem solve together. This —> connection and trust. #TLAP
A5: It allows you to define people and situations by where they’re going not where they’ve been. If we’re going to judge students by their past then should we not judge ourselves by our first year as educators? I don’t want that for myself. #TLAP
A5 Assuming positive intent helps you leave your own personal assumptions aside. Allows for more meaningful collaborations when trying to solve a problem/issue. Beneficial for all. #tlap
#tlap - A5 - When teachers are talking negatively about individual students or students in general, I like to point out something positive about them, or say something like "well, isn't it great he/she is here and has such great teachers that can help him/her!"
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: Assume that students can do anything ❤️and should be given more opportunities to save the communities that they live in and give them a chance to interact with the communities that they love and be the heroes that they long to be. #TLAP
A4: Energy, both positive and negative, is contagious! If staff takes care of themselves and are empowered by the building leaders the positive energy will flow down hill to those we serve!! #TLAP
A4: When Ss are having terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad days, I try to see their outburst as an invitation to help. To love them even more. I try to remember that the other students are watching and in that moment, I’m teaching them, too. #TLAP
A5: Being naïve allows the Ss to have a clean slate, new start, and a fair shake.
When they are with me we build relationships on OUR grounds me and Ss, not Ts from the past! Ss want to be liked and want to LOVE coming to school! #tlap
A5: Nobody got into this profession to be miserable. It helps for me to keep in mind that somewhere along the path, people can lose their way. Everyone has a story. #tlap
A5: That all Ts are trying their hardest to make a great environment and learning experience for the Ss. Also that all Ss want to be supportive, encouraging, and loving towards their Ts and other Ss. #TLAP
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: See the good in everyone. It helps us to see PURE joy and PURE love! No motives, no negativity. Seeing kids as kids, parents as partners in education, and educators as relationship builders. #TLAP
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
This approach works wonders. Sets a great tone for the day. Also provides opportunities: for us to see a kid is “off” and for them to talk to you before they make a poor decision. #proactive#tlap#teachbetter
Check out my school's Twitter (I run it) for some of the posts on our WHY. :) @platorv We were given shirts too and will be wearing them at our Back To School Bash tomorrow. Front says, "I know my why, do you?" and back is school logo, etc. #tlap
A5: I don’t even have an answer to this, the whole concept of the question stands on its own! :-) I love the metaphor all by itself. Don’t give others that much control... #tlap
A5 I think sometimes those kids that have a reputation for being difficult & just not coming in with a negative mindset about them...fresh slate and building a relationship. It’s amazing when those hard to reach kids, who really are just hurting, find you are on their side #TLAP
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q6: The Power Struggle Avoider, the Emotions Deflector, and Naïve Body Spray are all yours! What tool would you add to this “New School Year Tool Kit”? What treasure of wisdom do you think every educator needs? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Never thought of it put quite like that, but the innocence of naivety is more appealing than pessimism. It can show students or others how to think differently if they want to #tlap
A5: Not allowing negativity in: from other teachers or from Ss. We start fresh when u walk in my door. I only want 2hear what u can do. Give me your strengths & your positive. We have plenty of time 2work on our weaknesses as we progress through the year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A3: I choose to be an optimist. And it is a choice. Everyday you have to choose to see the good in every situation but also to see the good in every person. #TLAP
My first superintendent told me during my first year to start a folder like that, and wrote me a note to put in it. My folder (now bursting at the seams) is one of my most treasured items. #tlap
A5 - A favorite is called “good morning!” Walking down the hall is a great start. Even though we know not everyone is excited for school, saying “good morning!” with a smile shows people that your all about happy and greeting them. #tlap
A4: like the #LeadLAP ladies say, passion can’t be faked BUT enthusiasm can follow a short time of faking the funk. Stay positive and force that smile, then positivity and the feeling will soon follow. Kids deserve our very best in crafting their future. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
a5: I don't believe each student gets a fresh start with a new year. They get a fresh start with a new day. or a new period. or a new moment in class. #tlap
A5: Naiive or not, I live by the four agreements by @donMiguelRuiz . 1. Never take anything personally. 2) never make assumptions 3) always do your personal best 4) be impeccable with your word.1/2 #tlap
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A1: Hi I teach students with intellectual disabilities. I think it's important to remember that the 1st few weeks may not go as planned but be flexible, and do your best! The kids will be okay if they see you are kind and you care! #tlap
You can even be a RAKtivist from the @RAKFoundation if you’re REALLY loving kindness! Even though acts of kindness aren’t always random, I still use RAK as an acronym! #tlap#passionforkindness
In reply to
@DVMSRoom305, @CathleenBeachbd, @AllysonApsey, @RAKFoundation
A5:If someone is nice to you, they're having a good day, if not, their bad day. Don't think it's you, don't take it personally. If someone ignores you at work, don't make assumptions, ask them @ it or you make the move to connect. 2/2 #tlap
Agree! We all want what is best for kids. We just might have different views of what is best and how to get there. I believe we must come together, collaborate, figure it out, and do what truly is Best for THE KID! #tlap
A6 - It is probably not the most important tool to include in the tool belt, but I really believe in the power of visualization. Visualizing, or even teaching to an empty room, can really improve a challenging or important lesson.
I guess wear the Visualization Vest? #tlap
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: assuming that even the Ts who say they don’t like collaborating or had a bad experience with it don’t want to, do. And continue to show the positives about it works. #TLAP
A2: I spent my time in the classroom in adult ed. I taught classes to ppl that literally operated the power plant longer than I had been alive.
It always came down to respect. Show them that you respect them and foster a respectful environment. Always. #TLAP
Q2: The first tool every educator needs is the “Power Struggle Avoider”. When we get into power struggles with students, no one wins. What is a strategy you use to avoid power struggles or to back out of them when they begin to happen? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2 Avoiding or backing out of pwr struggles is not a behavior of weakness but an opportunity to give the other person quiet space to hear themselves out. Our countenance is an important non-verbal queue as we listen & problem solve together
#TLAP#Path2Serendipity@NISDLosReyes
A6 Take risks, include the kids in your journey, decide things together. Create a little family.
Make your lessons ticket-worthy. #Relationships#Engagement#tlap
A6: Power of Connection - being connected to groups like this one keep me going on days that I feel like I can't do anything right. I appreciate my #PLN so much. #tlap
A5 Positivity is contagious...if you can spread just a little it will go a long way. You can start the change, be the difference maker. #tlap#Path2Serendipity
A6: I would gift every educator confidence in the person you are and in the person you are becoming, inch by inch. You are enough. Don't be afraid to ask for help--it is not admitting defeat, it is embracing hope. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: Not only does every student deserve people who can see their potential, but so do we as educators! Surround yourself with the best and be the best you can be. Be a dreamer, doer, believer for you and others! #tlap
A2: Breathe. Acknowledge how the student is feeling, offer choice s, allow the student time to calm down, make a choice, etc. check back often, but focus on the needs of other students as well. #tlap
A6: Kids have few choices throughout the day. We are not preparing them for a world where leadership reigns supreme. Use Genius Hour to help your kids find their passions. Or, give them more voice and choice in the classroom and watch them thrive. #tlap
A5: I wouldn't be beginning my 49th year in education (T, Pr, Supt, Consultant) if I didn't believe in teachers - those who make a difference. A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. - H. Adams #tlap
A6: I am going to add the "Prop You Up" tool. My role is support for Ts (and ultimately Ss). I want to do everything I can to help and empower the Ts in my district so that they can help and empower their S. #tlap
A4: because it is my room to share with my students... so, Luke the pup and my favorite chair.. it’s her chair! And the classroom is my students safe place to learn, grow, good, be silly, the whole deal!! 😁#TLAP
A5: Being naive can be a good thing. When you only see the good and the positive in people and circumstances your energy rubs off. “Attitudes are contagious” and maybe that co-worker always seeing the negative will catch your attitude. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A6: The “brag about your successes” spray. It’s ok to be proud of what you accomplish and it’s even better when you share it. Stop letting people who don’t know the half of what you do write the headlines. #TLAP
A2: Focus in on an object that was “the problem” (this last year I assigned a stuffed wombat detention) -the “Drive By” 1. Give a short directive 2. Rip away eye contact 3. Leave - Use proximity and ask if the Ss needs help even if they are just off task #ManyTools#tlap
A6: I want a pair of Positive PLN pants! A pair of pants where I can keep all of the wisdom and kind, supportive words of my amazing #PLN and this #tlap crew and can access them instantly whenever I am feeling down! (FYI.... they would NOT be this tight... 😳)
A6: Emotion Dectector would be the tool I would add to our arsenol. So many Ss are hurting & struggling that if we had this, we could see & help them sooner rather than too late. Adults emotions need detecting too. Busy Ts can get wrapped up in our day & miss things. #tlap
A6: The “True Understanding Hand Cream” First, seek to understand. Not punish. Not belittle or assume. Understand. We need to seek out WHY Ss and Ts and Ps make the choices they do. #TLAP
A4: I believe this needs to be a collective effort...the classroom environment belongs to all who learn and grow in it...we build it together! #tlap#Path2Serendipity
Q4: It is so important to not turn over your own emotions to a student who is struggling, but it can be so hard to do. How do you make sure that you are the one who determines how the classroom environment feels? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: I ❤️ being naive about family intentions! By approaching home connection to school assuming that all families are excited about promoting learning at home & wanting to be actively involved in the education process, there’s not really a choice to be anything different #TLAP
Q6: The Power Struggle Avoider, the Emotions Deflector, and Naïve Body Spray are all yours! What tool would you add to this “New School Year Tool Kit”? What treasure of wisdom do you think every educator needs? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A6: I would gift every educator confidence in the person you are and in the person you are becoming, inch by inch. You are enough. Don't be afraid to ask for help--it is not admitting defeat, it is embracing hope. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: Naive Body Spray is an essential tool with which to interact with many adults in the education profession. To always assume best intentions is critical in establishing the foundational trust needed for interdependent teams to thrive. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A5: I believe that Kids want to learn. Perhaps that’s naive but I believe it. It needs to be at their interest, level and it needs to be engaging. #tlap
A6: Be flexible. It's ok to go outside of the lesson plan. Seek those teachable moments that aren't in the plan. That's where your Ss grow, where your classroom culture grows, where you grow. #TLAP
Q5 As one of the leaders in my building I HAVE to trust and believe in the people that work directly with our students. If I’m not giving autonomy, voice and choice to teachers then we cannot have sustainable success. #TLAP
Q5: Naïve Body Spray allows you to assume that everyone wants good things for themselves and others. Share an example of where the naïve approach might benefit you in the new school year. #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A2- I offer choices. “You can __, __, or __.” If they choose D, I wait them out until they’ve made a decision and then we simply move on. Also, lots of collaborative problem solving meetings! #TLAP
A6: the tool I add is to keep a Safety Net near by. I surround my self with, colleagues, family and friends who are always their to love support and encourage! #TLAP
A6 The 7 Minute Lecture Shock Collar. After 7 minutes of talking, the shock hits you to be quiet, so learning can happen. Another favorite is the No Desk Rows Zone... Not even your mirror wants to look at you all day. #tlap
Q6: Do It Again Dust: Just a sprinkle when you need to dust yourself off & do it again. Whether it was a failed lesson, disagreement, parent issue, a coworker distraction, or a rough time in your home life, Do it Again Dust gives you the attitude & ability to do it better. #tlap
A6 label remover- remove labels from oeveryone we associate with, especially kids . Hold all at high standards, encourage and support all, and see all as the human they bring to you! #tlap
Q6: The Power Struggle Avoider, the Emotions Deflector, and Naïve Body Spray are all yours! What tool would you add to this “New School Year Tool Kit”? What treasure of wisdom do you think every educator needs? #TLAP#Path2Serendipity
A6: I would not be where I am today without Twitter. I would gift every educator the reassurance that they are loved, valued, respected, cared for, difference makers, and a vital part of society. #tlap
A6 Every educator needs to have three things in their Tool Kit:
1) Be kind and lead with your heart
2) Take risks
3) Be connected & look for support.
We are in this together! Keep making a difference! #tlap
