Choice. Lots of choice. Not just MY choices, either. Letting them be involved in choices to show Learning whenever/wherever possible. And lots of surprises. And plenty of humor #bfc530
Honestly caring about who students are outside of school then using their histories, interests, and abilities to inform your lessons —- that’s the way to get Ss engaged & invested #MakeItReal#bfc530
The secret to student engagement is variety and interest. You need to do a variety of assignments and activities that students find interesting. #bfc530
“Secret sauce” for student engagement...listen to them, love them, respect them, offer them choice, and be willing to ‘walk their journey’ with them...all about building trusting relationships! #bfc530
I think this is true at all levels - enthusiasm is contagious. That's why I tell LA teachers they shouldn't teach novels that they themselves don't like. #bfc530
Value them, show them w/your actions&swords that you believe in them, hug them, teach w/humor 😊, listen to them, teach to their strengths, areas of interest #BFC530
I agree with everything @kathyiwanicki said. Plus, and maybe this is just because of where I teach, sometimes you have to let just a little bit of your crazy show. Just a little. Not too much... #bfc530
1) Be Yourself, kids can smell lack of authenticity
2) Be a Good Listener & be careful how you approach a "wrong" answer
& probably most important
4) Be able to laugh at yourself,if students think you are uptight, they will be too

I agree. Teaching with and without a Feb break I can honestly say there is a mind fatigue in students that begins in March until spring break in years without snow days #bfc530

When students know that they are really making a difference and can impact real change in a community (school, local community, global community) then they are engaged. It’s the same for adults. #bfc530

It brought me so much anxiety last night waiting for the call - will I have to dig out in the dark morning hours? What about my lesson plans? Glad they called though #bfc530

My favorite moment yesterday..I was revealing the final 4 from #2018mbm and I got down to the last category and said, “Okay now for math..”. (I didn’t tell them who won)The short humans started to revolt. I loved it! #bfc530

When supply teaching in past yrs, one of the 1st things I did was take attendance & say “now, this is the time to help me pronounce your name correctly-I don’t want to spend the day saying it wrong”. Little thing, but it mattered. Ss knew they were important. #bfc530 ☀️

I try to never have them do the same thing everyday. It peaks interest. I have 3 Ss paraphrase directions before starting a group activity and engagement develops with curiosity. #bfc530
My secret sauce is to #MakeItReal when presenting new skills. Spending time creating a real world problem is a key to engagement. Another is allowing students to productively struggle by not giving the tools to solve. This allows them to figure out their own way and learn.#bfc530
As a Principal, I speak with kids 1-1 all the time re their lives in school. I can say with confidence that kids engage with teachers who engage with THEM on a heart and mind level. They can sense when they’re not liked & not learning, and, as a result, they disengage. #bfc530
