  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1. Without beliefs, it’s difficult to have direction. As a coach, your beliefs will impact how you interact with others. #educoach
  • MrsMoodyIC Jan 16 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1: establishing your beliefs is crucial because you must have clarity on your purpose and where you will focus your work. The second part is being extremely transparent and open about your coaching beliefs to your colleagues #educoach

A1 To be a successful C, I must be a successful salesperson. I "sell" two things: me & expertise. I have to be able to create relationships based on trust & I have to be able to "sell" my "product" which is literacy. By establishing these two "beliefs," I am successful #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:14 PM EST
Yes - developing a team's beliefs would be an awesome task. Even involve principal and teachers. All can form beliefs about coaching. #educoach

  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:17 PM EST
I agree - and we need to make sure we are identifying with all types of learners. What works for one, may not speak to another. We need to look at coaching from a variety of perspectives. #educoach

  • Cynthia_M_Kirk Jan 16 @ 9:27 PM EST
Although I am part of the work and bring to it my background knowledge and experiences it’s NOT about me. It’s about the students 1st and the teacher(s) I’m coaching #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q3 Which of the core practices of Student-Centered Coaching stood out to you and why? #educoach (The core practices from @sweeneydiane are listed here: https://t.co/g4sjBtihky)
  • mstudemeyer Jan 16 @ 9:27 PM EST
I love this! This allows teachers to understand that we are learning with them. #educoach
    In reply to @KathyPerret
  • mstudemeyer Jan 16 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: All of these practices are crucial, but I love 3: Using student evidence to co-plan instruction. This helps a coach to support the teacher in focusing on being student-centered and not teacher-centered when making instructional decisions. #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:31 PM EST
A3. Using student Evidence was a big game changer. Prior to moving to the SCC, S work was more anecdotal and now, it is central to the conversations. #educoach
  • mstudemeyer Jan 16 @ 9:32 PM EST
This is so valuable. I think this also helps teachers to rethink traditional assessments. :) #educoach
    In reply to @realAllisonW
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3 I love all the Core Principles and have had the honor to learn from both @SweeneyDiane & @leannaharris22. These 2 are critical in my book: Using standards-based learning targets Using student evidence to co-plan instruction. Without them - we aren't Student Centered! #educoach
  • Kmurray120 Jan 16 @ 9:33 PM EST
A3: coteaching with a focus on effective instructional practices. When I first started coaching, I thought coaching was all about the questions and our conversations. Now I see coaching as all about the students. #educoach
  • MrsMoodyIC Jan 16 @ 9:33 PM EST
A3: the one that has the most impact on me as a coach is the coteaching of learning targets because it is the heart of #sscoaching I have found that the one that impacts Ts most varies and I’m always surprised during the reflection to learn which one they say. #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:34 PM EST
I’ve been amazed at how just shifting my thinking and approach would give me more confidence to have the conversations that matter #educoach
    In reply to @KathyPerret, @SweeneyDiane, @leannaharris22
  • ELaneBV229 Jan 16 @ 9:34 PM EST
A3: Using student evidence for me would have to be the core practice that would truly change coaching to be student centered #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:35 PM EST
Awesome reflection on your work as a coach! #educoach It is powerful to see your work transform!
    In reply to @realAllisonW
  • Cynthia_M_Kirk Jan 16 @ 9:35 PM EST
A3: Definitely all the principles are valuable. what I’ve seen have the biggest impact for me right now is the standards-based targets because it puts the focus right where it needs to be on students. #educoach
  • IAteacherNan - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:35 PM EST
A3: I agree, @mstudemeyer! #3 also stood out to me for the same reasons. #educoach
#educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:35 PM EST
Notice any trends based on T? #educoach
    In reply to @MrsMoodyIC
  • SweeneyDiane Jan 16 @ 9:36 PM EST
A3: If I were to choose one core practice that most defines Student-Centered Coaching, it's using student evidence to co-plan instruction. Using student work changes the focus to learning. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST
Yes - that core practice really helps get the coach right into the action! #educoach Both Teacher and Coach are learning from students and planning for the next steps. #educoach
    In reply to @Kmurray120
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST
Q4 How have you set goals with teachers, rather than for them? #educoach
  • WWMerriman Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST
A3: “Measuring the impact of coaching on student learning” - we need to know we’re making the right changes. #educoach
  • SweeneyDiane Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST
A3: When using student evidence, make sure it's open ended and descriptive. No tests or bubbles! #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST
Hi! Lauren, Instructional Coach, Indiana, joining in for the last part of tonight’s chat. #educoach
  • mstudemeyer Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST
I agree! Focusing on student data makes the conversation shift from being about adults to being about learners' needs. #educoach
    In reply to @realAllisonW, @KathyPerret, @SweeneyDiane, @leannaharris22
  • ELaneBV229 Jan 16 @ 9:39 PM EST
A4: questioning is SO important! One of my favorites from @jimknight99 is “what are you thinking about on the drive home?” #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:40 PM EST
    glad you made it! #educoach
    In reply to @lsmith0917
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:40 PM EST
A4 I often help teachers use two or more sets of data. Engagement data and content data. We couple them together to reflect and plan. #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:40 PM EST
A4: We have used evidence of student learning to best determine how we will move forward and develop our goal together. It is a collaborative partnership that allows us to set goals and grow alongside one another. #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
    Me too😊! #educoach
    In reply to @realAllisonW
  • SweeneyDiane Jan 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
A4: Have the standards or unit at the table during the goal setting. Refer to it to guide the goal towards what you want the students to learn. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
Q5 How does student work currently impact your coaching conversations? #educoach
  • Kmurray120 Jan 16 @ 9:41 PM EST
A4: I make sure that I come with an open mind and open ears! #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4. I have really found that when you focus on the students and the the S work is present, goals have been pretty clear. I try hard to keep an intense focus on the WHY—student learning.#educoach
  • TeacherDaulton Jan 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A3: Using evidence when planning is an integral part of coaching. It helps to develop realistic ideas about misconceptions, specifics of what students know and understand. #educoach
  • MrsMoodyIC Jan 16 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4: questioning is important! Tell me about your Ss. What do you notice about them as readers? This can open up a dialogue about where they need to go and what might be a great student centered goal:) #educoach
  • ELaneBV229 Jan 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
A5: honestly this is new learning for me and the direction I want to take my Ts and my coaching #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
Yes, agree that this has been so helpful. We are able to look at and unpack unit goals and the standards that align to them to drive our goals and outcomes of student learning that we will be looking for throughout. #educoach
    In reply to @SweeneyDiane
  • mstudemeyer Jan 16 @ 9:43 PM EST
A4: Unpacking standards with teachers and then having teachers unpack standards with students has been valuable. This allows the teachers to understand what students truly understand in order to set goals. #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:44 PM EST
A5. Since workingnin the SCC, student work is at the core of the work. What are they doing well? What opportunities I they have to grow? That data is central to the questions and the planning #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:44 PM EST
Love new learning! Looking forward to hearing how things go as you adapt student-centered coaching approaches into your work. #educoach
    In reply to @ELaneBV229
  • SweeneyDiane Jan 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
A5: Try a sorting session to identify patterns of performance. What did we notice the students doing as readers? Writers? Mathematicians? How does that compare with the learning target? #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
It has really transformed my work and my thinking. #educoach
    In reply to @ELaneBV229
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
Absolutely! We have been striving to become more standard “savvy” so that there is deep understanding of our unit goals and standard alignment. This allows to see our units as a progression of learning. #educoach
    In reply to @mstudemeyer
  • IAteacherNan - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
A5: Since we are conversing about student learning, the teachers feel more like coaching is about student learning rather than "fixing" the teacher. #educoach
  • Kmurray120 Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
Q5: One of the best ways we use student work is at the collaborative team level. We look at the work (not just scores) to see evidence of student thinking and plan our response as a team. #educoach
  • TeacherDaulton Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A5: Stusent work impacts my conversations because We can reference specific student work while having conversations to make instructional decisions. #educoach
  • ELaneBV229 Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
    I’m excited to learn! #educoach
    In reply to @realAllisonW
  • MrsMoodyIC Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A5: during planning sessions with Ts we start with celebrations of the learning targets over the last week and then look at S data to make instructional decisions for the next week. Our intentional planning is drive by S work. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
Q6 How can you help teachers create a goal grounded in the standards that keeps the focus on students and their learning? #educoach
  • SweeneyDiane Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A5: Student work can also be what we hear and see when students are engaged in learning. I like to collect it on a grid and I keep focused by using the learning target(s) as my guide. #educoach
  • mstudemeyer Jan 16 @ 9:47 PM EST
A5: I love working with Ts to create learning progressions to break down standards in PLCs. Then, teachers can bring in student work to decide where it would fall on the progression to determine next steps. This also helps to calibrate T's interpretation of standards. #educoach
  • realAllisonW - Moderator Jan 16 @ 9:47 PM EST
Standards and how they transfer into the real world #educoach
    In reply to @lsmith0917, @mstudemeyer

A6: I struggle with making standards based smart goals. Too often the goal just becomes a repeat of district goals (to get % to proficiency on a learning target). How can we personalize the goal? #educoach

I’m using more of a team approach with SCC. The problem is that I cannot get into CRs the way I should or need to, so without the co-teaching, I’m not even sure if it’s effective. #educoach

I have to peel off in a minute but I wanted to let everyone know that I've been posting an answer to a question every Friday on Twitter using a VLOG format. I'll choose a question on Friday to answer. Share yours at #SCCquestions! #educoach

A6: We find that goals for coaching cycles are much more focused than a smart goal. Your unit would be a good guide. What learning is the teacher going after for the next 4-6 weeks. That will translate to a goal for a coaching cycle. #educoach

I have practiced taking the goals that lean towards SMART goals and rewrite them. Great examples in the book! I think the struggle reminds us that it really is a craft! #educoach
