Hello 👋🏽! Allison, IC from SC. I was really touched this week after receiving an email from a teacher that I once worked with. She expressed a great deal of gratitude and I am so humbled! Coaching is powerful! #educoach
Hannah Studemeyer, current coordinator for special services... soon to be Lead Instructional Coach pending suitable replacement in BCSD, So proud of our coach cohorts and deep learning! #educoach
Greetings! Diane Sweeney here. So glad to join. My celebration this week is working with amazing coaches and principals in Greenville County, SC. They are moving mountains here! #educoach
Nancy Wright, instructional coach for K-2 in Southwest Iowa. My success this week was time with fellow IC's discussing @jimknight99 's Impact Cycle. #educoach
A1: My personal beliefs could potentially get in the way of helping a teacher set his/her goal for a cycle. I need to listen to what that T has to say. #educoach
A1: establishing your beliefs is crucial because you must have clarity on your purpose and where you will focus your work. The second part is being extremely transparent and open about your coaching beliefs to your colleagues #educoach
A1 To be a successful C, I must be a successful salesperson. I "sell" two things: me & expertise. I have to be able to create relationships based on trust & I have to be able to "sell" my "product" which is literacy. By establishing these two "beliefs," I am successful #educoach
A1: First, you must understand your personal why in order to create a common vision among a coaching team. Everyone's beliefs and values should be valued to create a common vision and direction. #educoach
A1: Your beliefs drive how you coach. For example, if you value partnership, your coaching will reflect that. If you value getting to a certain place, your coaching will reflect that. We reflect our values in our actions
#educoach
A1: First, you must understand your personal why in order to create a common vision among a coaching team. Everyone's beliefs and values should be valued to create a common vision and direction. #educoach
I agree - and we need to make sure we are identifying with all types of learners. What works for one, may not speak to another. We need to look at coaching from a variety of perspectives. #educoach
A2: One of my core values and beliefs is transparency. When working with others, I strive to ensure everyone knows the purpose before diving into the process and product. I love how @brightmorningtm describes this in The Art of Coaching Teams. #educoach
A2 A deep sense of curiosity drives my coaching. This allows for the teachers, coaches, and school leaders I coach to reflect and make the best next steps in the process. #educoach
Although I am part of the work and bring to it my background knowledge and experiences it’s NOT about me. It’s about the students 1st and the teacher(s) I’m coaching #educoach
A3: All of these practices are crucial, but I love 3: Using student evidence to co-plan instruction. This helps a coach to support the teacher in focusing on being student-centered and not teacher-centered when making instructional decisions. #educoach
A3. Using student Evidence was a big game changer. Prior to moving to the SCC, S work was more anecdotal and now, it is central to the conversations. #educoach
A3 I love all the Core Principles and have had the honor to learn from both @SweeneyDiane & @leannaharris22. These 2 are critical in my book: Using standards-based learning targets
Using student evidence to co-plan instruction. Without them - we aren't Student Centered! #educoach
A3: coteaching with a focus on effective instructional practices.
When I first started coaching, I thought coaching was all about the questions and our conversations. Now I see coaching as all about the students.
#educoach
A3: the one that has the most impact on me as a coach is the coteaching of learning targets because it is the heart of #sscoaching I have found that the one that impacts Ts most varies and I’m always surprised during the reflection to learn which one they say. #educoach
A3: Definitely all the principles are valuable. what I’ve seen have the biggest impact for me right now is the standards-based targets because it puts the focus right where it needs to be on students. #educoach
A3: All of these practices are crucial, but I love 3: Using student evidence to co-plan instruction. This helps a coach to support the teacher in focusing on being student-centered and not teacher-centered when making instructional decisions. #educoach
A3: If I were to choose one core practice that most defines Student-Centered Coaching, it's using student evidence to co-plan instruction. Using student work changes the focus to learning. #educoach
Yes - that core practice really helps get the coach right into the action! #educoach Both Teacher and Coach are learning from students and planning for the next steps. #educoach
A4: We have used evidence of student learning to best determine how we will move forward and develop our goal together. It is a collaborative partnership that allows us to set goals and grow alongside one another. #educoach
A4: Have the standards or unit at the table during the goal setting. Refer to it to guide the goal towards what you want the students to learn. #educoach
A4. I have really found that when you focus on the students and the the S work is present, goals have been pretty clear. I try hard to keep an intense focus on the WHY—student learning.#educoach
A3: Using evidence when planning is an integral part of coaching. It helps to develop realistic ideas about misconceptions, specifics of what students know and understand. #educoach
A4: questioning is important! Tell me about your Ss. What do you notice about them as readers? This can open up a dialogue about where they need to go and what might be a great student centered goal:) #educoach
Yes, agree that this has been so helpful. We are able to look at and unpack unit goals and the standards that align to them to drive our goals and outcomes of student learning that we will be looking for throughout. #educoach
A4: Unpacking standards with teachers and then having teachers unpack standards with students has been valuable. This allows the teachers to understand what students truly understand in order to set goals. #educoach
A5. Since workingnin the SCC, student work is at the core of the work. What are they doing well? What opportunities I they have to grow? That data is central to the questions and the planning #educoach
A5: Try a sorting session to identify patterns of performance. What did we notice the students doing as readers? Writers? Mathematicians? How does that compare with the learning target? #educoach
Absolutely! We have been striving to become more standard “savvy” so that there is deep understanding of our unit goals and standard alignment. This allows to see our units as a progression of learning. #educoach
A5: Since we are conversing about student learning, the teachers feel more like coaching is about student learning rather than "fixing" the teacher. #educoach
Q5: One of the best ways we use student work is at the collaborative team level. We look at the work (not just scores) to see evidence of student thinking and plan our response as a team.
#educoach
A5: Stusent work impacts my conversations because We can reference specific student work while having conversations to make instructional decisions. #educoach
A5: during planning sessions with Ts we start with celebrations of the learning targets over the last week and then look at S data to make instructional decisions for the next week. Our intentional planning is drive by S work. #educoach
A5: Student work can also be what we hear and see when students are engaged in learning. I like to collect it on a grid and I keep focused by using the learning target(s) as my guide. #educoach
A5: I love working with Ts to create learning progressions to break down standards in PLCs. Then, teachers can bring in student work to decide where it would fall on the progression to determine next steps. This also helps to calibrate T's interpretation of standards. #educoach
A5: Student work is an integral part of our conversations. It drives our next steps and allows for responsive instruction to take place to ensure that student needs are being met for all learners. #educoach
I have to peel off in a minute but I wanted to let everyone know that I've been posting an answer to a question every Friday on Twitter using a VLOG format. I'll choose a question on Friday to answer. Share yours at #SCCquestions! #educoach
A6. The conversations in the book are really helpful! My big 🤯 came from new realization of how to manage some of the concerns with forward movement! #educoach
A6: We look at the standards as a progression (grade level below and above) as well as the unit/transfer goals and understandings to keep our lens focused on the students and ensure that our actions are driven through our aligned set goal. #educoach
A6: I struggle with making standards based smart goals. Too often the goal just becomes a repeat of district goals (to get % to proficiency on a learning target). How can we personalize the goal?
#educoach
I’m using more of a team approach with SCC. The problem is that I cannot get into CRs the way I should or need to, so without the co-teaching, I’m not even sure if it’s effective. #educoach

A6: We find that goals for coaching cycles are much more focused than a smart goal. Your unit would be a good guide. What learning is the teacher going after for the next 4-6 weeks. That will translate to a goal for a coaching cycle. #educoach
Thanks everyone for joining in and for your interest in this work! I am honored that you selected Student-Centered Coaching: The Moves for the winter book study! #educoach
I have practiced taking the goals that lean towards SMART goals and rewrite them. Great examples in the book! I think the struggle reminds us that it really is a craft! #educoach
