"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com
A1. We need to be able to look past perceived shortcomings of our Ss, and show mercy because of our calling as teachers. Called to love and support our students through the thick and thin! #edtechafterdark
A1: I think it’s making sure students know from Day 1 that they are yours and you will always believe in them, even when they can’t, don’t, or won’t believe in themselves. Every day, regardless of what happened yesterday! #EdTechAfterDark
A1: Grace extended to kids isn’t the act of ignoring their worst moments but it’s the act of not allowing those moments to define them. Kids must be understood and loved as so much more than their mishaps. #edtechafterdark
GIF is perfect!
@EMercedLearning, I thought of you when I saw this. You're making such a huge difference in this kid's life by coming back each day and continuing to teach him! #edtechafterdark
A1: Grace extended to kids isn’t the act of ignoring their worst moments but it’s the act of not allowing those moments to define them. Kids must be understood and loved as so much more than their mishaps. #edtechafterdark
A1: When reflecting on this question, I can’t help but think about grading practices... what message do we send by leaning on archaic practices like lunatics grading. What would happen if we evolved. What would happen if we extended grace to our kids? #EdTechAfterDark
A1. Ss would not be judged on previous behaviors because each day is a new day. We would not take behaviors personal & be able to separate the behavior from the individual student. Our goal is to teach the correct behaviors. #edtechafterdark
Even further... What a disservice when we pass on our observations of a poor performance academically to our students' future teachers. We should focus on the strengths and areas of potential growth. TIME TO REFRAME OUR THINKING.
#edtechafterdark
A2: teaching is much more than reading, writing, and arithmetic as teachers we are the only stable influence lots of kids see daily. We must be firm but loving, and supportive and consistent #umedtech#edl577um#EdTechAfterDark
A2 Deep. We need to give up the “power trips” - the “I’m preparing you for the real world” recognize their world is prob more real than my own ... the guide them gently 🤔 #EdTechAfterDark
A2. Need to recognize that each of our students will play a role in the future of our world. We are preparing a future generation that is going to be charged with receiving the baton and caring for our world and people in it. Big responsibility! #edtechafterdark
A1: because kids are, you know, growing up, we owe them the service of acknowledging this—knowing, in fact, that we are all works in progress, and that we all deserve the freedom to fail w/o fear of being left behind. #edtechafterdark
A2: Seeing the connection to the world in our teaching has become more difficult than ever before. Never allow standardization and test prep to mask that were in the business of serving the world both in the here and now, and in the future. #edtechafterdark
A1: I think most importantly it's letting students know you have their back, regardless if they are struggling or exceling. As the teacher, we are there to help guide them back to the path of discovery. #EdTechAfterDark@harryhanna
This is very true as teachers we should never handicap a student with negative experience. Each student should get a chance to start over #umedtech#edl577um#EdTechAfterDark
Even further... What a disservice when we pass on our observations of a poor performance academically to our students' future teachers. We should focus on the strengths and areas of potential growth. TIME TO REFRAME OUR THINKING.
#edtechafterdark
A2: Deep question for a Monday!
We have to re-examine how we do things in the classroom and what message we are sending to our Ss and what skills do we want them to know beyond how to score a good test score on a standardized test. #edtechafterdark
A2: It’s the sense of duty and connectedness to a global society that should ignite our passion as teachers and hold us accountable to helping students grow into independent, responsible, innovative adults. #EdTechAfterDark
A2: Teaching is sacred, but I believe that it has been taken hostage by standardized testing. We have to carve out time during our lessons to go beyond the standards to connect to the world around us. #edtechafterdark
A2. Wow! Tough question. We just need to pause sometimes from the assessments, lesson plans, etc. & smell the flowers. Look at the big picture of how teaching of some sort has impacted everyone’s lives #edtechafterdark
Q2: We can value our fellow staff, faculty, and admin members as family--and when the students see this respect, then they can model it. Mutual respect revolution!
A1: I’m also a 🕌Scholar.
Grace in Islam -
اللة /God bestowing grace -
His mercy, sincerity, purity, bounty, guidance, 💡
In Islam - a person needs to work towards grace — can be gained from deeds.
Edu
Grace my ClassRM 🙏🏼
Ss chances to 😇behavior+ 📚
#EdTechAfterDark
Mistakes + “moments” 😦☹️😭
are opportunities for 🍎Ts to understand their age group + provide the kind of #BehaviorMgmt plan that will help Ss succeed. #Psych#Religion#EdTechAfterDark
A3: One act of kindness toward a student can make the difference between that student's success or failure. As teachers we need to remember everything we do and say shapes a students future. #umedtech # edl577um #EdTechAfterDark
A3 I believe it can when we communicate what we do & why we do it ... grace can be given, but it must always be accepted ... sometimes sts don’t accept because they don’t know it’s being given ☺️ #EdTechAfterDark
A2: This made me think of what Yoda said, “It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together." Everything we do in our classrooms has impact to Ss future & world. It’s a huge responsibility! #edtechafterdark
A3: Of course! Authentic loving relationships are the cornerstone of education. Students and colleagues will learn better by someone they trust and confide in. #edtechafterdark
A3: Yes, I believe extending grace supports growth for all involved. I began this Monday by publicly forgetting my class was responsible for leading our oli (morning chant). My colleagues extending me much grace. 😬😌#edtechafterdark
Namaste y'all. Leslie from ATL. We grow eduleader mindsets and think about grace, compassion, humility in leadership all the time. Grace is transformative because it requires you to face your own shortcomings and see how we are all both divine and flawed. #EdTechAfterDark
A3: A child granted the safety net of unconditional love can take risks, make discoveries, and be themselves without fear and anxiety. Grace is contagious and I believe whole heartedly that it has the potential to transform an entire school culture. #EdTechAfterDark
A3: Absolutely! One of my toughest Ss is a perfect example. Came from a hard family life, always in trouble, mentioned he was going to move at semester. I "sarcastically" said I would miss him & that triggered a change. He didn't move & became my "son" #proudmom#edtechafterdark
A3 I believe it can when we communicate what we do & why we do it ... grace can be given, but it must always be accepted ... sometimes sts don’t accept because they don’t know it’s being given ☺️ #EdTechAfterDark
A3: Sometimes those grace moments are just the corner turns or spring boards a student needs to hit the reset button. I’ve seen it several times in my career. #EdTechAfterDark
Q3: #edtechafterdark Happily... is most nourishing and transformative for me, the one extending grace... and I hope that it extends to students and campus family too, but, for me, it is important not to get too attached to the outcome for others. :)
A2: Hmm...I think it's never losing sight of the students you teach. Everyone has their own unique story and each student brings a different perspective to the classroom. Differences are beautiful and help us grow both in and out of the classroom. #EdTechAfterDark@harryhanna
A3. Yes, I believe it actually transforms you. When you give grace, you neither want nor expect something in return. This brings you to a level above most human beings. It brings you closer to God. #edtechafterdark
I think we have to be careful not to mistake grace and mercy. I love the work of Pema Chodron on this topic. Lots of amazing mind and soul-blowing ideas that will change how you relate first to yourself and then to others. #EdTechAfterDark
A3: #Grace in Edu could be Ss being given multiple attempts at learning or different kinds of #assessments.
It isn’t about a grade.
It is about learning.
#EdTechAfterDark

A4: As previously stated, it starts by modeling grace. However, when students experience it, they soon find themselves distributing it themselves. Therefore, the best way to assure our students possess a persona of grace is to first possess it ourselves #EdTechAfterDark
A3: Absolutely! Sometimes we'll never know the full impact we have on our students... but an impact we will have and grace can make all the difference in their memories of us. #EdTechAfterDark@harryhanna
A4: Grace, like kindness, is contagious. When we model things like grace for our students, they pick it up and extend it to other. It’s a beautiful thing! #EdTechAfterDark
And the beauty of extending grace is it ends up changing your trajectory as well. In fact, it's greatest power is in extending not receiving it. Let's be cautious not to think of extending grace as another "strategy." It's not coercive. It's for us, not them. #EdTechAfterDark
A4 this is a hard one ... I think for one to be of grace, they have to receive grace ... so as a tchr, I need to receive In order to give & in turn, they receive in order to give 🧐 #EdTechAfterDark
A4: Just like any great lesson, we have to model grace. The more people see grace around them, my hope is the more they extend grace to others.....students and adults. #edtechafterdark
A4: #EdTechAfterDark - in addition to the many positive ideas already mentioned, I think, on a granular level, it's fun & important to have a class (or dept) motto/ catch phrase/hashtag/class dept photo (both virtual bitmojis & actual)... & badges! (requote: we need the badges!)
Hi everybody! Jumping in a bit late😱 I' m Fabiana , EFL/ESL from Argentina: A3: without Grace humanity won' t survive:Our children more than ever before need us to show them a t least a small ray of light #EdTechAfterDark

The best we can do is model this consistently and work to create wide spaces in our schools where adults are operating out of grace, love, optimism, humility, curiosity. If we overengineer it, next thing you know grace will be a non-negotiable. #EdTechAfterDark
A4: Especially in Mathematics education, I feel making students understand that making mistakes is okay and not something to be feared should be a pivotal part of a classroom environment #EdTechAfterDark@harryhanna

A5: During my first years of teaching when I was stressed and lost a fellow veteran teacher came to school on the weekend and sat with me and just helped me sort things out. This person is a teacher I have always worked to emulate. #umedtech edl577um #EdTechAfterDark
A5 I’ll never forget the @EdcampUSA that @jessxbo surprised me with a bear hug ... while it wasn’t grace from her, it felt like grace to me! I needed that even when I didn’t know I needed it! #EdTechAfterDark

The concept of Grace in Islam
is attached to this Hadith
(a saying of Prophetمحمد. )
It means: we aren’t the in control
-we need to do what we can -
God bestows mercy + grace.
🍎Ts need to do what they
can to #ZPD Ss progress.
#ZoneOfProximalDevelopment#EdTechAfterDark
A5: I would say those first couple years of teaching, not knowing what you are truly do and students showed mercy as I was learning with them. #EdTechAfterDark
A2: Spiritual practices in all aspects of life are a positive influence. Going deeper into the mind & heart, touching the inner innocent human being is done with and by Grace #edtechafterdark
I think the biggest acts of grace and mercy I have enjoyed have been extended by myself to myself. We hold ourselves to such impossibly high standards. To practice true grace and compassion for others, I have to start with the [wo]man in the mirror. #EdTechAfterDark
A5: During my first year of teaching, I was handed 6 separate preps across 3 grade levels. My colleagues (at the time, mere strangers) refused to allow me to drown. Their words, their wisdom, and their lesson plans kept me afloat. #EdTechAfterDark
A5: When I have not been extended grace & mercy! First years of teaching I'm sure my veteran colleagues were gracious & merciful towards me. 😀 #edtechafterdark
A5. When I was a Behavior adjustment teacher & I focused too much on social skills & not as much on academics. My Ss did not do to well on the state test but the parents gave me a pass. (1yr only) #edtechafterdark
A6 I’m more apt to extend grace (sometimes I feel undeserving of receiving it ... then friends come along & remind me that I do deserve it) ... I find it easy to give fresh starts > to a fault! #EdTechAfterDark
A6: I think I am more apt to give grace. I try to see the good in my students and find the "reset button" on the days when it is a struggle. #EdTechAfterDark
i appreciate this insight... if I am hard on myself, it is more difficult for students to trust my message of grace. Thanks @hazlebussey ! #edtechafterdark

A5: When have I not been extended grace & mercy!? First years of teaching I'm sure my veteran colleagues were gracious & merciful towards me. 😀 #edtechafterdark
You can't receive it if you don't believe you are worthy, and you can't extend it if you don't believe others are worthy. You have to examine your biases to get past the knee-jerk "Of course I think they're worthy." Because often our behavior says something else. #EdTechAfterDark
A6: I am more apt to give grace. I know that there are times when the students and adults in my life need grace more than anything at that moment. #edtechafterdark
A6– I find a real balance in my life. I think my comfort giving grace has brought it back in uncountable ways. I’ve been the beneficiary of so much professional and creative generosity of late! @MCummings365@david_knoche@tishrich#edtechafterdark
A6: I think I receive a lot of grace from my students as they see my mistakes daily. My kinders are constantly learning, trying, failing, trying again, working hard. I’m not really extending grace, just celebrating and supporting their learning journeys. #edtechafterdark
EXACTLY! And we are so overprogrammed so all the right things come out of our mouths, but our deep truth comes out of our eyes, our tone, body language. It's unconscious. Our work is to make it conscious, but too often the pace of our edu-lives won't let us #EdTechAfterDark
What a great chat tonight ... exceeded my expectations! Loved the topic, the questions, & the conversation! Thanks @alexstubenbort and all company!! #EdTechAfterDark
A6: I like to think that I extend grace more than receive because this is the behavior I most want to model for my students. As with anything, it's easier to receive but the greater reward is giving. #edtechafterdark@harryhanna
