We welcome all educators to join #AppleEDUchat every Tuesday. Our ADEs host chats from both Europe and the Americas with an incredible lineup of topics to spark conversation. Share your ideas & stories and connect with this global community. Join at 6pm PST or 9pm EST.
Welcome to #AppleEDUChat! It's time to share ideas and experiences as we discuss how to inspire creative expression in the Humanities from K to Higher Ed!
We will be asking fewer questions to give you time to create. Answer each question by creating an image or video or showcasing student examples to inspire us! #AppleEDUChat
Jessica from Arkansas; clinical instructor at Univ. of Central AR and former ms/hs ELA teacher. Excited about tonight's #AppleEDUchat! I early voted last week, so I don't have my sticker selfie tonight, but happy election day, guys!
Hey there @nhsdwelch@alfredsiha I waited in line for an hour here in small town USA but I VOTED #YesAnd Mia here, tuning in to #AppleEDUchat from Dover Foxcroft, Maine
Hi all - Marc Drumm, Senior Instructional Designer at West Chester University near Philadelphia. They never give us stickers at our polling place… 😡 #AppleEDUChat
A1: Students in my American History classes analyzed Washington's Journal of his trek into the Ohio Valley to create a Graphic Novel of the era, all right within Pages on iOS #AppleEDUChat
Joining in late tonight! Good evening everyone! I’m Michelle, an instructional tech coach from the Chicago burbs. Voted early this morning, you can see the bags under my eyes. #AppleEDUChat
Drawing forces students to take time, look at the components, revise, and make choices. Drawing is an overlooked opportunity for learning, and I’m so happy to see it receive the attention it deserves in #EveryoneCanCreate#AppleEduChat
A1) Young adults use drawing to remove struggles with reading/writing. They can storyboard/sketch independently & proudly share. They show greater depth of understanding with drawing. #AppleEDUChat
Drawing helps Ss visualize abstract concepts; in my EdTech class, I challenged Ss to use Apple Pencil & Keynote to draw what it looks like to be an innovative teacher. Using the shapes as starting points really helped make an abstract idea concrete for them! #AppleEduChat
A1 Sometimes Ss get “stuck” with writing - feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to get started… drawing can help them express themselves without finding the perfect words. It’s personal and creative #AppleEDUchat#Create>Consume
I agree! I have a lot of students that sketchnote on their iPads and find it so much more meaningful and less stressful than traditional writing #AppleEduChat
A1: In science, having students draw has such power! Planning, sharing content understanding, posing questions…drawing on an iPad is one of my students favorite ways to share! #windowtolearning#AppleEDUchat

A1: drawing simply gives more students a different way to learn. Literacy through drawing. Read a passage and draw it out. We copy what Sherman Alexie does in "Part-Time Indian" #appleeduchat
A1 drawing reinforces research based strategies-
1- non linguistic representation (Marcano)
2- dual coding theory & neurophysiology (we encode the visual and auditory together, dendrites grow & the myelin sheath gets fatty, reducing interference.
And it’s fun!
#AppleEDUchat
A2. photography is pretty simple with iOS. Any one with curiosity can figure it out. Maybe going over depth control with photos, the markup features, and the other editing features would be good, and then let them loose! #AppleEDUChat
I was thinking of this today when you presented. I bought several packs of play-doh - a non-tech way to do something very similar to your opening activity.

A1: Drawing out ideas can also just take a somewhat boring topic (like some of my geology lessons, ha) and make it more engaging. Students really remember geologic columns when they take the time to draw them! #AppleEduChat
A1: Drawing and images help create connections for students. Especially when students are just learning to create sentences. These 1st grade drawings definitely help tell their story! #AppleEDUchat
A1: drawing is a huge benefit to my more visual learners in the classroom. It lets them express their thoughts in a more freeing way than text alone can. #AppleEDUchat
I agree! An undo button feels a lot easier than an eraser. Sometimes it's the little barriers we remove that make learning more accessible to students. #AppleEduChat
A1: I have many teachers and students who like using drawing for visual vocabulary or sketchnoting. The Magic Move in keynote is also great to show the movements of a concept. Especially since creating is limitless with the new shapes and fills. #AppleEDUChat
A1 I think drawing frees students from the limitations of explaining things with words. They’re free to try to interpret the content in any way they can. #AppleEDUchat
This idea involves all students at all skill-levels...and helps the visual learners in the room understand the concept just by seeing peers’ work. #AppleEDUChat
A1b I’m reading this book by @ATDeBenedet and it’s all about how play is essential to living lighter and smarter. I’m only in Ch2 and there are so many classroom implications
#AppleEDUChat
A1: It helps kids to really "picture" what is going on. It also helps them to remember the content as our brains are better at remembering images than text/spoken word. #AppleEDUchat
A2: using video as a medium allows students to be more creative in expressing their thoughts and ideas. Add a green screen and they can be anywhere in the universe. #AppleEDUChat
Yes- any creation can be a representation.
1 play doh
2 aluminum foil creations
3 painters tape on the classroom wall
4 song parodies
5 tableaux
... and on... and on...
#AppleEDUChat
A2) They are the playwright, director, producer and PR team when they create videos. If they work on teams there is no better way to start collaborating than creating videos. Creativity overcomes shyness. #AppleEDUchat
A2 Video adds yet more dimensions of creative expression with movement, sound #AppleEDUchat It offers a myriad of choices for student interpretation and expression
A2: Video was a GAME CHANGER in my ELA classroom! Often, Ss can express themselves verbally much more easily than through writing (which can seem daunting). I moved a lot of analytical writing tasks to video - script writing is more authentic than an essay :) #AppleEduChat
So true! This is such a great way to make learning come alive! I love using green screen to let kids go wherever! :) I also love stop motion for that reason...kids can create their own characters, places, etc. and make it come alive! :)
#AppleEDUchat
A2: I love all the planning and creative angles that come into play with video. Students have to really evaluate their communication methods with video. #AppleEDUchat
A2: We us video, and especially Clips, to analyze text (written and visual) for arguments. Better way to analyze audience and evidence than just writing. #AppleEDUchat
A2 what if video was the product of how we combine dual coding theory with a maker mentality?
Role play?
Script writing and performance?
Green screens to put Ss anywhere in the world
Much like #5cluechallenge but Ss create them! (Follow @msoskilfor more details)
#AppleEDUChat
A2: using video allows the student’s voice to come to life. They can make their humanities topic their own, by creating in a format that is their style. I love using Apple Clips for projects like this. #AppleEDUChat
Good project. Have seen similar ones before. Teaches them patience, among other core skills. With responsive designs reducing wait times, patience is indeed a virtue. #AppleEDUChat
A2: This year, I've used video for class session reflections using Clips, Adobe Spark Video, and even Snapchat; Ss then share their video reflections on Twitter. Those authentic connections have really helped my pre-service Ts begin to build their PLNs #AppleEduChat
Video levels the playing field. ALL Ss can express themselves in this way and it isn't dependent on their ability to write. It's amazing to see Ss who struggle with writing create video! (even shy Ss-using Clips and other apps don't force them to speak on camera). #appleEDUchat
A2: This was an amazing way that I saw video being used in the humanities. A teacher at my school set up a Flipgrid in her class and had the students share about their culture at home!! So cool! 😎#AppleEDUChat
We’ve got #FlipGridFever in second grade @BVelementary! These students were really excited to share a typical meal in their home for our social studies culture unit. Can’t wait to find more ways to use this awesome tool. #bvleaders#iteachsecond@Flipgrid

A3: Music is an area that I'm not well versed in, but I've seen music teachers do AMAZING things with showing how music reflects the time period! Could be a great project for kids too....current events themed lyric/songwriting? Sounds fun! #AppleEDUchat
A2 A variety of subjects within the humanities involve foreign places, teachings, and languages. It’s one thing to discuss a foreign location, it’s another thing to show it and experience it. #AppleEDUchat
A3 I love having Ss create song parodies to showcase learning. The process and collaboration involved is so much fun.
We generally do this with simple web tools, but one day I’m hoping to branch out to using GarageBand for this. #AppleEDUChat
A3: Live Loops within GarageBand is a favorite of my students. You can easily make a beat to tell a story creatively. An era, a chapter, a historical figure? Enhance creativity with written lyrics, but, take it to another level with music. #AppleEDUChat
A2 A variety of subjects within the humanities involve foreign places, teachings, and languages. It’s one thing to discuss a foreign location, it’s another thing to show and experience it - video can do that. #AppleEDUchat
A3: Some of my most amazing classroom experiences are discussing why a song, in both words and melody, match a piece of writing or literature. Music creates classroom experiences that never make it to paper, and that parents and/or administrators never see. #AppleEduChat
Q3: In American Lit, I challenged Ss to write & produce Hamilton-style rap songs in Garageband. It made dry, historical documents SO much more engaging & forced students to close read & make sure they honored the spirit of each document: https://t.co/2GSXfRU9Hl#AppleEduChat
A3: Music is always my weakest area. But, I always add the use of #GarageBand for student production. This year, students created the music for their #OldWomanCreek app. Using @Lightwellpro and all the apple tools, it’s going to be wicked cool! #stillworkinghard#AppleEDUchat
A3 I’ve seen great music/video combo work by middle school students demonstrating their understanding of science - rap, with a Garage Band backing track they made themselves #AppleEDUchat
Love this Break Up Jam project!! I used to ask students to write break-up letters in the style of the Declaration of Independence. This takes it to another level! #appleeduchat
YES! It is one, simple and easy-to-use app that is great for kids with all ability levels....& all confidence levels. Shy? Use a poster. Not strong with writing? Try live titles/dictation! The stickers make it easy to point things out and the emojis make it fun! #AppleEDUchat
A3) My first group this year was into creating music for a specific ‘feel’ - incredible to watch them create a section then demo to peers. Accepting feedback was very positive from the start. Hope this new group digs deep as well with GarageBand!! #AppleEDUchat
A3: look at the success of Hamilton. Revising the story into a modern style that is engaging many generations. Many of us have done parody lessons, but this is another avenue for our musical students to utilize resources like #Garageband#AppleEDUChat
A3: Of course, students can't be the only ones enjoying Live Loops. I got in on the "act" as the colonies created their own break up songs with Britain. #AppleEDUChat#ThatsEnoughKingG
Love this Break Up Jam project!! I used to ask students to write break-up letters in the style of the Declaration of Independence. This takes it to another level! #appleeduchat
That's awesome! I did the ECC space project with those and was amazed what can be done with the loops that already exist (even tho I feel like I know nothing about music!) #AppleEDUchat
I’d love to see some of their work when your Ss are ready to share! My college preservice Ts could work on providing academic feedback if needed. #AppleEDUchat
A3 There are so many pop songs about events that have happened throughout history. I bet if you named just about any major historical event over the past 50 years, you could probably find at least one song about it. #AppleEDUchat

Having so much fun with LiveLoops this year!!! Some of our learners with the most complex profiles are able to create such beautiful music! Accessibility, GarsgeBand & iOS for the win! #AppleEDUChat
For sure! I will be sharing their app out on Twitter like crazy! It is a citizen science app that shares the estuary and the learning students had while there. :) #AppleEDUchat
A4: I think a huge part of this is repeated tech use to build Ss digital fluency. By introducing and exploring a variety of tools throughout the year, Ss grow in their confidence to choose their own best mode of expression to show what they know in our courses #AppleEduChat
One that I always share...but think is so powerful! Love how this gives kids multiple ways to show their understanding! Great because it includes visual, written, spoken and performance skills so that all kids can express themselves! #AppleEDUchat
A4: Using inquiry so students are invested in topics related to the content. Then utilizing tools like #Clips and @Flipgrid to share their learning. Giving all students time to process their thinking and share their ideas in their preferred formats #AppleEDUchat
A4: "When you've got skin in the game, you stay in the game. But, you don't get a win unless you play in the game." If a student isn't engaged, they aren't learning. Get them in the game first and let the learning come with it. #AppleEDUChat
A4: I think it is so important to be predictably unpredictable. As a middle school teacher, I want to try to provide as many outlets as possible. For example, if music, video, or acting isn't your thing, how about creating a 3D representation of a concept? #AppleEDUChat
A3: I use music to center the class. Sometimes it connects to class content. Example: compare Langston Hughes “Theme for English B” with Biggie Smalls’ “Juicy.” #AppleEDUchat
This kind of flexibility also means students lose their "out" of saying "I can't do that." Kid, you can literally show me what you know however you want! :) #AppleEDUchat
A4: One of my goals as a teacher is to provide real world experiences for students where what they create is applicable to the world at large. https://t.co/mpVTvTvraI. #AppleEduChat
A4 For our distance students, Zoom has become the killer app. Individually or in a group, they can record themselves online showing anything from just about any device. #AppleEDUchat
This is just one scene in the @Lightwellpro app that students created to have users tap on the choices to see consequences of actions around the estuary. Planning, drawing, science, software…love it all! #AppleEDUchat
A4: One of my goals as a teacher is to provide real world experiences for students where what they create is applicable to the world at large. https://t.co/mpVTvTvraI. #AppleEduChat
A4: I like to give students choice, allowing them to explore an app and be the leader to others as the “techspert” It’s a mindset that can be hard for some when they want a guided project. Organizers and setting student lead expectations always helps #AppleEDUChat
A5: I try to model publishing and sharing with students through our class Instagram and YouTube accounts. I think they need as many examples of positive, purposeful sharing as can get. #AppleEDUchat
A5: I really challenge my pre-service teachers to share everything they create on professional Twitter & Instagram accounts. This builds their PLNs but also builds their confidence as creators #appleeduchat
A5: Our district uses @Seesaw often for publishing in the school and with families. @Flipgrid is great for publishing. Many teachers will share student work via Twitter. I would love to start incorporating more community connections. #AppleEDUChat
A5: There are so many opportunities to share someone's story with the world. Do it. Publish it. When students talk to real people about real things, the emotional connection that doesn't exist with a textbook or lecture appears https://t.co/QeMDXCiaMh#appleeduchat
A5: Provide them with an authentic audience. They realize their voice matters when they have people to interact with. Provide them with opportunities to connect with other classrooms w/experiences like #GRA18#GridPals, and #MysteryHangouts & continue to connect #appleeduchat
My hope is that they carry these connections into their careers! I teach a lot of students in their junior and senior blocks, very close to having their own classrooms and really needing that edu-community support #AppleEDUchat
A5 Encourage students to establish their own presence on the web to showcase their work. Having your own site is ideal, but if that’s too much then a blog is an easy first step. Combine that with social media to help get the word out and foster interaction. #AppleEDUchat
