Drawing forces students to take time, look at the components, revise, and make choices. Drawing is an overlooked opportunity for learning, and I’m so happy to see it receive the attention it deserves in #EveryoneCanCreate #AppleEduChat
  • KMillerSAIL Nov 6 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1) Young adults use drawing to remove struggles with reading/writing. They can storyboard/sketch independently & proudly share. They show greater depth of understanding with drawing. #AppleEDUChat
  • JessicaRae929 Nov 6 @ 9:12 PM EST
Drawing helps Ss visualize abstract concepts; in my EdTech class, I challenged Ss to use Apple Pencil & Keynote to draw what it looks like to be an innovative teacher. Using the shapes as starting points really helped make an abstract idea concrete for them! #AppleEduChat

A1 Sometimes Ss get “stuck” with writing - feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to get started… drawing can help them express themselves without finding the perfect words. It’s personal and creative #AppleEDUchat #Create>Consume

A1: drawing simply gives more students a different way to learn. Literacy through drawing. Read a passage and draw it out. We copy what Sherman Alexie does in "Part-Time Indian" #appleeduchat
  • JuliePJones Nov 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1 drawing reinforces research based strategies- 1- non linguistic representation (Marcano) 2- dual coding theory & neurophysiology (we encode the visual and auditory together, dendrites grow & the myelin sheath gets fatty, reducing interference. And it’s fun! #AppleEDUchat

  • LLacrosse Nov 6 @ 9:16 PM EST
A1: Drawing out ideas can also just take a somewhat boring topic (like some of my geology lessons, ha) and make it more engaging. Students really remember geologic columns when they take the time to draw them! #AppleEduChat
  • JohnnieTysklind Nov 6 @ 9:16 PM EST
A1: Drawing and images help create connections for students. Especially when students are just learning to create sentences. These 1st grade drawings definitely help tell their story! #AppleEDUchat
  • MaestroJeremyF Nov 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1: drawing is a huge benefit to my more visual learners in the classroom. It lets them express their thoughts in a more freeing way than text alone can. #AppleEDUchat
  • alfredsiha Nov 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
Q2: How can video be used as a new way to display a new way of thinking about a topic within the humanities? #AppleEDUChat
  • JessicaRae929 Nov 6 @ 9:17 PM EST

A1: I have many teachers and students who like using drawing for visual vocabulary or sketchnoting. The Magic Move in keynote is also great to show the movements of a concept. Especially since creating is limitless with the new shapes and fills. #AppleEDUChat
  • marcdrumm Nov 6 @ 9:17 PM EST
A1 I think drawing frees students from the limitations of explaining things with words. They’re free to try to interpret the content in any way they can. #AppleEDUchat

  • JessicaRae929 Nov 6 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: Video was a GAME CHANGER in my ELA classroom! Often, Ss can express themselves verbally much more easily than through writing (which can seem daunting). I moved a lot of analytical writing tasks to video - script writing is more authentic than an essay :) #AppleEduChat
  • bethany_nugent Nov 6 @ 9:22 PM EST
So true! This is such a great way to make learning come alive! I love using green screen to let kids go wherever! :) I also love stop motion for that reason...kids can create their own characters, places, etc. and make it come alive! :) #AppleEDUchat

A2 what if video was the product of how we combine dual coding theory with a maker mentality? Role play? Script writing and performance? Green screens to put Ss anywhere in the world Much like #5cluechallenge but Ss create them! (Follow @msoskilfor more details) #AppleEDUChat

Oh my goodness! I may have to steal this idea if that is ok! I think I have some 5th graders that would really enjoy this! #AppleEDUChat

Having so much fun with LiveLoops this year!!! Some of our learners with the most complex profiles are able to create such beautiful music! Accessibility, GarsgeBand & iOS for the win! #AppleEDUChat

For sure! I will be sharing their app out on Twitter like crazy! It is a citizen science app that shares the estuary and the learning students had while there. :) #AppleEDUchat

Q4: What best practices and tools do you use to foster student opportunities to interpret content in their own unique ways? #AppleEDUChat
  • JessicaRae929 Nov 6 @ 9:37 PM EST
A4: I think a huge part of this is repeated tech use to build Ss digital fluency. By introducing and exploring a variety of tools throughout the year, Ss grow in their confidence to choose their own best mode of expression to show what they know in our courses #AppleEduChat

One that I always share...but think is so powerful! Love how this gives kids multiple ways to show their understanding! Great because it includes visual, written, spoken and performance skills so that all kids can express themselves! #AppleEDUchat

A4: "When you've got skin in the game, you stay in the game. But, you don't get a win unless you play in the game." If a student isn't engaged, they aren't learning. Get them in the game first and let the learning come with it. #AppleEDUChat

A4: I think it is so important to be predictably unpredictable. As a middle school teacher, I want to try to provide as many outlets as possible. For example, if music, video, or acting isn't your thing, how about creating a 3D representation of a concept? #AppleEDUChat
  • alfredsiha Nov 6 @ 9:40 PM EST

A5 Encourage students to establish their own presence on the web to showcase their work. Having your own site is ideal, but if that’s too much then a blog is an easy first step. Combine that with social media to help get the word out and foster interaction. #AppleEDUchat
