Hi! First time chatter here. I am Jeffery E. Frieden in the City of Ontario, California (I have to use "city of" so people don't confuse me with Canadians). I am going into my 14th year of teaching high school language arts.
No fav band, but I can play guitar.
#champforkids
Welcome Jeffery! So glad that your first chat is with the #champforkids fam! Be sure to follow the awesome crew tonight!
Do you ever use your guitar with your Ss?

Good evening #champforkids family! Really excited about the theme that @khoggardGRT has selected for tonight's chat.
My favorite boy band growing up was #NKOTB (New Kids on the Block), for me they definitely had "the right stuff."
Intro: Hey #champforkids! This is Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. I am an award-winning #STEM Facilitator for @SmartLab_tweets from @Simmonsknights1. Favorite venue: The Fireside Bowl in Chicago. Best bands in the crappiest setting. Spent many nights there as a kid.
Hi #champforkids! This is my first chat with you, and I am pumped! Noel, Secondary ELA Teacher from NC. I don't have a favorite band or musician, but Beyonce always puts on a great show!
Hey #champforkids friends! Kristi here! I’ve taught 1st - 4th grade (most recently 4th) and am currently taking a year to stay home with my kiddos, but LOVE teaching and will be back very soon! I already miss it like crazy and school hasn’t even started! #champforkids

Hi #champforkids! Annie from Bethlehem, PA here. I teach high school math during the year and elementary/middle school musical theatre in the summer. I’d have to say I’m a pretty big Green Day fan
Intro: Hi! I'm Vicki from Fort Morgan, CO. Principal of an alt. ed. high school. Favorite band...love all music...favs = Meatloaf, Straight No Chaser, George Straight, Alan Jackson! #champforkids
Hey #champforkids I’m Eli, Lead Learner/Principal of Monte Vista Elementary in Las Cruces, NM. Picking a favorite is hard but I’ll go with Garth Brooks today
Intro: I am Erik Sievert from Oshkosh, WI. I am a 7th gr SPED teacher. I'm a newbie, only headed into my 4th yr of teaching. Can't choose fav band/artist but fave album: The Greatest Showman. #champforkids
A1 I don't talk down to students and I refuse to let them talk down to each other or to themselves. I teach HS and will be honest and real and answer their questions and push them like a coach or tough mentor. I believe in them and they know it. #champforkids
A1: I do what I can to make myself available for students. If they need help, I'm there. If they have a question at 9 PM and they send me a @RemindHQ, I'll get right back to them.
I did have a student message me at 5 AM once, and I responded.

A1 I try really hard to encourage others and help them see the best in themselves. I can be a pusher at times with regards to getting people out of their comfort zones but I always work to walk alongside and provide support as needed! #champforkids
A1:My willingness to collaborate with others definitely is the #champforkids characteristic that helps me make a beautiful difference. I believe in teamwork & overcoming obstacles as well as celebrating successes together. I know that when we work together, we can be unstoppable!
Liz from Virginia Beach here! I teach a 2nd grade gifted cluster class. I recently took my daughter to see Imagine Dragons and they were fantastic! #champforkids
A1: My #champforkids strength is kindness! I am passionate about cultivating kindness in all aspects of my work, with family and with strangers, too! A little bit of kindness goes a long, long way! #champforkids#passionforkindness

A1: One of my #champforkids characteristics is that I lead from the heart. I care about my Ss, and I aim to make a difference in their lives. I am so excited for my first year, and I cannot wait to hopefully make a difference.
I went to see him at the Nebraska state fair about 29 yrs ago. I didn't listen to his music at the time, didn't even know who he was. My college roommate took me. I fell in love that night. #champforkids
A1: My past. It helps me relate to kids that don't have it together quite yet. I see these kids as underdogs that are in need of a first-follower. I love coming alongside of them and showing them their future...if they choose to do life differently. #champforkids

I was totally rocking out to This I Promise You... but now, Imagine Dragons takes over my YouTube! WOOT! "Just a young gun with a quick fuse" #champforkids
A1: My word for this year is “perseverance.” I don’t like to give up, and I love to see the results of hard work. I never give up on myself, and I never give up on my students! #champforkids
A1: Relationships are one of my biggest strengths and building that classroom community. Because of this, my kids feel safe to take risks socially, emotionally and academically! They know they are loved unconditionally and rise to the high expectations set for them! #champforkids
#champforkids A1 I work really hard at developing relationships with my students and families. Sometimes that means stepping out to have courageous conversations. Sometimes it means being vulnerable. Sometimes its hard but its always worth it.
A1: My willingness to be a life-long learner is my greatest #champforkids characteristic! I continue to look for ideas/strategies to make school successful for ALL students!
A1 - I’m POSITIVE!!! To me it’s the number one thing that gets kids excited and ready to learn. Without positivity, all the other stuff is tough to get done. Students feed off of it. #champforkids
A1: I am honest and open with them. I’m not afraid to share a little about myself, especially if it helps them through a tough situation. But I’ll also make references Black Mirror or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt which helps them see that I’m also a “normal” person #champforkids

A1 I believe that my authenticity and push for people to be their real and true selves and push boundaries challenging conventional thinking and encouraging autonomy is my answer for this ? #champforkids
Tracey from Kansas. I teach K-5 at a Therapeutic Learning Program. Favorite band...hmmmm...I don’t really have one. I have a few songs I really like right now though by Andy Grammer, Jason Mraz, Ed Sheeran, and Shawn Mendes. #champforkids
Intro: I am Erik Sievert from Oshkosh, WI. I am a 7th gr SPED teacher. I'm a newbie, only headed into my 4th yr of teaching. Can't choose fav band/artist but fave album: The Greatest Showman. #champforkids
A1: i think its about building relationship with my students that makes a beautiful difference. The relationships i build help deal with the classroom management and makes it alot easier #champforkids

A1: My willingness to do almost ANYTHING for my Ss is my best #Champforkids characteristic. I will do whatever it takes to help them be successful and know that they are loved without reservation.
Love this one! I’ve gotten so many great ideas from working with the teachers around me, or developed an okay idea into an excellent one with their support! #champforkids
A1: I would go with VALUE. I value my Ss individuality and their opinions. As a result they feel safe and trusted which helps us have meaningful relationships which is beautiful to me. #champforkids
#ChampforKids Building relationships through mindful interactions, smiles, 1-minute check ins, intentional listening and ALWAYs using their name, making eye contact and paying attention to their needs

A1 I have become a good listener. It’s important to invest time in others. They will appreciate it and they will one day do the same for us!#champforkids
A1: a characteristic - I notice "things" about my kids, expressions, clothes, shoes, hair, etc and I comment or ask. Littles share about anything and everything and love to talk about themselves. It's all about the relationships. #champforkids
#champforkids I always take the disposition that Ss want to become their best selves. They want to succeed. They want to generous and helpful to others.
It's my job to help them do those things in ways they might not see when they walk in on day 1.
A1: My #champforkids ability is definitely kindness. I am always there to help a fellow teacher out and I hope that they, in turn, help others. I try to model kindness for my ss because they are watching you even when you don’t realize it!!
A1. Compassionate - helps me meet my kids, parents, staff, colleagues & community right where they are so that we work together to get to where we need to go. Part of my why!

A2 Dedication takes time, energy, and focus. Being a mom and a teacher means I'm dedicated to many young people and feel guilty when I can't provide as much as I'd like. It's tough and often exhausting but I wouldn't trade a bit of it! #champforkids
A2: In my role as a language arts teacher, I want students to learn all the things they need to fix in their writing. I spend way too much time writing comments they will never read, hoping against hope that they will read them and something will click.
#champforkids
A1. Believing in a child! Working with Ss to get them to believe in themselves, and grow their wings, despite whatever issues they may be facing! #champforkids
A1 Vision is mine. Having a vision that all of our students possess the unlimited potential to achieve greatness. This often serves as the personal and team motivation to continue supporting, encouraging, and celebrating our Ss #champforkids
A2: When people cannot recognize their mistakes or aren't willing to apologize, it makes it difficult to be a #champforkids. We all make mistakes, but what separates a #champforkids from the rest is our ability to acknowledge, admit and do what it takes to make it right.
A2 - Sometimes I can try to push for too much change, too quickly and make people feel uncomfortable or shut down. Check out my blog on knowing and fearing your strengths. #champforkidshttps://t.co/axJT45eZYZ
A1. One of my #champforkids strengths is an ability to problem-solve quickly, which helps give students more than one way to proceed forward in reference to behavior or academics roadblocks.
Leslie Hopp, first year H.S. special education teacher, Illinois. I've seen Jason Aldean over 50x, Tyler Farr nearly 30x, and way too many other artists to name b/c I've seen too many 😂 Country music is my hobby, and it's a great way to connect w/ my students! #champforkids
A1: I am a calm and positive person. Things can be total chaos in our room and I’m able to stay calm and work through the situation in a positive way. #champforkids
A1. I would say I have a huge ❤️ I love each of my kids whether I had them in 2nd or not -
Whether I had them last year or 19 years ago! Love them like it was yesterday! Oh, & I’m a BIG kid🤪#champforkids
A2: I don’t like to fail. I have a hard time accepting it when things don’t go as I planned. I know it’s important to let kids know that failure is part of learning, so I should embrace mistakes - I’m working on it! #champforkids
A1 What makes a difference for me is the the word “champion”. There are so many challenges that our kids face that we have to teach them tools to push through any challenges. Listen to “Champion” by Carrie Underwood and Ludacris #champforkids

Ugh yes! Love that you’re investing in those that are most easily overlooked!!! I really work to see the extraordinary human in each of them and I have seen it make such a difference for some of my students! #champforkids
Very type A. Over the years I have been learning to let go of the reigns a bit. I even let Ss take total control in the final units of the year. I was secretly stressed, but Ss might not have known. #ChampForKids
A1 As I have become more accepting of myself as on openly gay teacher, I try to help students see their worth and that it's ok to be "different." A lot of backlash but I do it because middle isn't easy, especially our LGBTQ+ youth #champforkids
A2 - It used to be that others would think it was over the top. Now, I never think that I’m not teaching to positivity to convince others of its importance. Rather, it’s what I believe and value as a person and teacher. It is a choice. I choose HAPPY! # Teachpos #champforkids
A2: I think the characteristic that sometimes makes being a #champforkids difficult is self-doubt. Of course, I plan on giving my all to my students, but, sometimes self-doubt creeps in. I need to have my students in mind and do what I know is right for them.
This is an important characteristic, Stephanie. All of our Ss need someone who will pay attention to them, notice when things are not right, and make an effort to help them get back on the right path @StephDill92#champforkids
#ChampforKids It can be hard to step aside and let them fail. To let them get frustrated & not tell them the answer, let them figure things out on their own- it is all about teaching them the skills to be able to teach themselves- reinforce independence & self-advocacy
So important! And undervalued. I can only imagine how many students would be happier people if they were taught daily by people who were positive and encouraging. We all love what we do, but always expressing it? That’s a different story. #champforkids
A2: Being "the fixer!" Wanting to jump in before the hard work has been done by the student herself; wanting to solve it, mend it, take "her side," or take away her pain. Sometimes it's hard to watch as the student works through the tough stuff. #ChampForKids
#champforkids Sometimes I may be a little too "free-range" with my Ss. One who need more structure, oversight, and swaddling aren't sure how to handle the freedom and responsibility I give them. I'm trying to do better at earlier intervention.
A1 #champforkids I think my empathy for the situations of others makes a difference. I listen to my students and colleagues, and offer strategies to help as needed.

A1: I am able to connect with students who are sometimes viewed as challenging by others. These students know I have their back and that I will support them in any way that I can. #champforkids
A2: Trust. When kids know that you believe in them, it opens many doors. It cuts both ways. When you trust people, it also allows challenging Ss to take advantage of their position and try to get away with more than what is reasonable. #champforkids
A2: Knowing that I can't help every single kid. It hurts my heart to know what many of them go home to, and there's nothing I can do about it but love them while they're with me. #champforkids
A2 It is hard for me to step back and let them make their own choices. Win-Lose-or Draw, Ss have to learn from mistakes and missteps. You can't always rush in to help them right away. #champforkids
A2: When you ask a student if you can get real with them, they say “yes” because you care then the talk becomes tough. Saying things that are truth causing them to deal with tough characteristics or choices. They hear me because I love them! #champforkids
A2. Compassion. No need to go back & check...that was my answer for Q1 as well. Sometimes when not kept in check, my compassion will overlook or excuse things that shouldn't be. I've grown immensely in this area...but have a way to go. #champforkids
Q2: I’d say my determination. I always want the best for my students and sometimes that means spending hours and hours rethinking lesson plans, thinking about the best way I can help them and this takes away from other things in my personal life. #champforkids
A2 For me it’s when I forget that not everyone is as willing to be vulnerable, be reflective, or take risks and I am so ready to jump in. I have to remind myself to be patient and mindful #champforkids
A2: Sometimes compassion leads to compassion fatigue as the weight of caring for those around you pulls you down. We have to find ways to keep self-care a compassionate priority, too! #champforkids
A2: Swimming upstream... you becomes a T for the Ss, not to gain the approval of the Ts in the faculty room. So you do right by the kids every single day, no matter what it takes, but it can be difficult if you feel like there aren’t a lot of people alongside you #champforkids
A3 Students voted our TQEs process the must-keep reading exercise. We used it daily and got so much more out of them than when I used to do "study questions." Last year ZERO study questions, LOTS of analysis and love of reading! It's so easy! #champforkidshttps://t.co/I15Rs7ygkx
Q3 - "You've got the right stuff..."
Share with us something that you felt had the "right stuff" this year in your classroom/building/district. #champforkids
A3: Our district held 3 two-part professional development sessions that were created for teachers BY TEACHERS. The concept was brilliant, but had an uneven deployment. Some of the sessions were incredible!
But this district-wide practice is going away this year.
#champforkids
A2: Sometimes it is hard to let a kid scrape their knees a little bit. I want so badly to catch them, but if I do, they don't learn. HARD, hard, hard to do, but necessary. #champforkids
A1: I believe everyday is a new opportunity for our students to SHINE! I believe they can achieve greatness and it's our job to support them along THEIR journey #champforkids
A2. Trying new things, or getting Ss to attempt different things that they have never done before! Some may have fear, f.a.i.l., but to encourage them to keep trying and problem solving to learn from our mistakes! #champforkids
A3 - I felt like the work we did in our building this year with #PBL grades K-5 was off to a pretty powerful start this year! We have some continued fine tuning, but we took a big risk and it paid off in Ss engagement for sure! #champforkids
A3: Taking things "step by step" has helped me be a #champforkids. I have a long list of things I'd like to accomplish but I recognize that we have to prioritize & make sure we're doing the "right stuff" at the right time. I don't want anyone to become overwhelmed & give up.
A2: I think the characteristic that sometimes makes being a #champforkids difficult is self-doubt. Of course, I plan on giving my all to my students, but, sometimes self-doubt creeps in. I need to have my students in mind and do what I know is right for them.
A2: I over analyze and care too much what other people think. After a lot of reflection and reading this summer this is an area that will improve this next year!! #champforkids
#champforkids A2 it's challenging to be so passionate about teaching. Sometimes people won't get you and sometimes they won't agree. Its hard to know you have the right stuff....
A2: the overwhelming feeling that there is SO MUCH to do or SO MUCH needed in order to truly make a difference can be a distractor. I have to reshape my mindset to not let those thoughts get me down #champforkids
A2: Availability. We are limited beings who want to do so much for our kids, that I can find myself spread thin and only then realize that I have not invested in the kids who I thought, “Oh, they’ve got it!” Dangerous assumption. #champforkids
A2: I think caring for students can be difficult! Watching students struggle with whatever- education, personal problems, etc; caring can be draining! #champforkids
#champforkids A3: Something I tried this year that I feel led to students taking ownership of their learning and extending it past the school day: creating a class blog!
Working on this too! I have to say, sometimes I admit “this obviously didn’t go as planned, but we’re all learning here, even me!” and you expect the classroom to spiral out of control. But they’re so stunned that you just admitted it that it really builds trust! #champforkids
A3: As a building, we have started to focus on the importance of our students' social/emotional characteristics. Excited to continue this process this year! #champforkids
A3: I loved that teachers at my school had the opportunity to nominate students. I chose to nominate quiet leaders, and they were sent to the office to be recognized and receive a positive phone call home. It was an amazing experience and one I want to continue. #champforkids
A2: Having high expectations can be hard at times. However, it is one of the most important characteristics to keep going & stick to. Ss may think they aren't able, but when you expect the best they will rise up & do their best & show themselves they are able. #champforkids
A2: The hardest thing is ignoring the negativity and pushing my students to try things that are completely out of the box when others are saying it will fail. #champforkids
A3: Our approach to learning. We shifted from the traditional, teacher-led environment to one that the students took the lead. They asked the questions and sought the answers. They learned persistence and how to be gritty. In the end, they got the win. #champforkids
Q3 - "You've got the right stuff..."

A2. The difficulty comes sometimes with reluctance from others to reach beyond the ordinary to do something extraordinary for children. WE need to open our eyes and really SEE. Think Teddy Pendergass, “Wake Up Everybody”. #champforkids
A3 - We started an Easel of Excellence in class. Everyday there was either a positive word, phase or question that students had to answer or reflect on. It was a total game changer. #teachpos#champforkids
A3: I LOVED that this year the teachers were given the authority to take risks in the classroom. It really helped to know that we were supported in trying new approaches---which is what my adventurous soul needed! #champforkids
A3: I think my integration of technology with my kinder and future 2nd grade students has helped motivate my students and keep them engaged. However, I feel like my personal relationships with each of my students helped bring out the best in their work. #ChampforKids

Transitioned multiple classes to standards based grading and the Ss loved the new approach. Also allowed retakes on tests (with some criteria) and it was the envy of students who were not in my classes (my Ss also loved the policy). #champforkids

A3. Kids knew they were loved & supported...no matter what! We focused on helping kids self-regulate & keep themselves in check. Huge impact! Major reduction in disruptive outbursts. We also created a safe place for kids to be. 14 lives saved...literally! #champforkids

A3 - We started an Easel of Excellence in class. Everyday there was either a positive word, phase or question that students had to answer or reflect on. It was a total game changer. #teachpos#champforkids
A3: A sister school (Jordan HS) started Grad Walks in our District and we participated this year. It was AMAZING! To see the faces on students (old and young) made it all worth it #champforkids
#champforkids This year I spent a good amount of energy focusing on peer-to-peer listening and kind dialogue. Coupled with "Mathacogntion" reflections about emotions and process, I believe my Ss received more focus on themselves than just on math compared to previous years.
Dan, this is spot on! Isn't it powerful when we teach kids that failure is just an attempt in the learning process. Can be so hard for some kids at first! #champforkids
#champforkids A3 this year I really focused on morning meeting and infusing social emotional skills into my plans. My kids flourished and finished higher than any other group of kinders I've had.
A2. I would say my huge ❤️ I take my work home w/me- worry about my kids at home- Do they have bed to sleep in, coat, food- ask other professionals 4 help, dislike when I hear professionals say- u did all u could- NO! More to be done! #champforkids
A3: I did classroom transformations this year and the kids LOVED it and learned so much! There are major #champforkids in my district who I was able to collaborate with even though we were on different campuses!
A3: Incorporating room transformations, student voice, community based learning, and PBL. It was awesome to watch the engagement and student improvement! #champforkids
A4: I am going to go for a radical change and attempt to make my class GRADELESS! I teach seniors too. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my career, but I am so done with grades! It's time for learning without GPAs!
#champforkids#TG2chat#ttog
A3. I had 3 long term sub assignments last Spring & I never felt i had the right stuff. Nothing worse than feeling like you are a stranger to Ss #champforkids
A3 I feel like the right stuff I had was a positive spirit and new ideas. I was a new admin in a place desperate for change, new life and positive energy. We did a lot of “letting go” and starting new #ChampforKids
A3 Very proud of the work that our Ts, Ss, and district teams have done this summer. We have the “right stuff” going on @CravenCoSchools! #champforkids
A3 I felt I had the "right stuff" once something clicked internally that it doesn't matter what other staff think about my ideas, if I truly believe it will better S's then it's what I need to do! Starting a diversity club this fall! #champforkids
Those kiddos with executive functioning delays can have a difficult time with too much freedom. Glad you are able to reflect and relize some need more support to really get moving. #champforkids
A2 #champsforkids Sometimes when you are trying to be an advocate for what is best for kids, you aren’t always in a position of power to influence/implement those changes.
A3: Two of my coworkers were incredible mentors to me, I wouldn’t have survived year 1 without them!!! One was there to cheer me on every day, and the other knew when to give me a pep talk and when to tell me to get over it before I even told him anything was wrong! #champforkids

A4: This year, I'd like to encourage Ts & Ss to take more risks & to reflect on what they're doing & learning. I want them to not see mistakes as a failure but at a First Attempt in Learning. I also want to take more risks & reflect on my journey this year. #champforkids
A3: This year I tried to step back and let my students do passion projects that connected with AP European history, the kids loved it and we all learned new things! #champforkids
A3 #champsforkids Our district has started a #PLSDproud hashtag for documenting the positive things happening in our schools. This gives us a chance to hear about what is going on at all grade levels, and connect with others to share ideas.
So true Sara. . . It’s hard for me to watch others struggle so I have to catch myself and remind myself that through those obstacles is where they truly learn about themselves #champforkids
I agree. The looks, whispers, snickers, or just downright negative comments are hard for me to ignore too!! @CristinaDajero and I use the 1% rule! You can give 1% of your energy to being frustrated by all of that and then 99% to find a solution and move on! #champforkids
A2: Saying Yes. I usually step up to do things that aren't being done or say yes to a blanket request to get things done for the kids. This results to me being spread thin and only doing a lot of things good/great rather than a few things fantastic! #ChampForKids
A4 Next year I will be changing to a blended learning model. I want to given Ss more control in their path and choice of the HOW.
I have lots of help from my PLN (looking at you @DMooreSpanish !!!) #ChampForKids
#ChampforKids Flexible seating & community written goals- identifying “ideal” classrooms how to reach them. It worked really well and standing desks enhanced the design so students had lots of choices of where to sit. This helped behavior & self-regulation- kept the flow positive

A2 You always that one child who you struggle to break in and develop a relationship with. It's worth the struggle but I hate the time it sometimes takes. You finally break thru and school is almost done #champforkids
A3 Key word, "intentional." We are all so busy, but when we stop what we're doing, look to students & make eye contact & actively listen, the intentional takes over! Very cool, Terry! #champforkids
A4: I want to INCREASE #StudentVoice on our campus. I want there to be principal's student advisory groups, pathway student advisory groups, student town halls, and more! #champforkids
A4 - I want to get global and have Ss begin thinking and connecting outside of the walls of our building. We are tying our connections to literature and understanding cultures of others. Thinking it is going to be an amazing beast of an undertaking! #champforkids
A4: Collaboration is critical - locally & globally. My goal is to do more of it. To look at someone & say 'you are the expert here - teach me!' We have so much to learn from each other. #champforkids
A3: Our MS admin made it a point to tell staff multiple times to feel safe taking risks for kids. Never would they dinged only encouraged to keep trying and improving. #champforkids
Oh Whitney, you are speaking my language! My first year as a GRT, I'm not sure that I ever said no, ever took a lunch, or ever had an in school planning period. It was ridiculous! I have worked to get better, but still have a ways to go! I feel ya girl! #champforkids
Love this tradition, Edward. When we allow our younger students to see graduates in person, this gives them something tangible to look forward to and provides motivation to work harder to accomplish the same goal @MrSteinhauser#champforkids
A4: This year, as a first year teacher (yay!), I plan on cultivating a positive environment while helping my Ss develop a growth mindset. I also plan on being more organized and realize that it is okay to not be perfect due to just starting out. #champforkids
A4 I’m late but I’m so glad to be here! This year the big change I am making, is making sure I am giving kids more authentic learning oppritunities and audiences! #kidsdeserveit#champforkids
A3: I supported 12 more 1st graders and made some really strong relationships through the time, work and play that we did. They weren't on my case load, but they needed me so I was there for them. #champforkids

Share with us something that you felt had the "right stuff" this year in your classroom/building/district. #champforkids
#champforkids I have always been the agent of change in my approach and pedagogy. For 19 years.
This year I get to teach with @techieteachott. I am anxious to let another progressive professional guide my change and development!
A4. I want to continue to improve on deepening our understanding of the impact of trauma and poverty on our students' behavior in the classroom, making sure that my teachers are equipped to better help & support our kids in this area. #champforkids
A3 Love it! May I make one suggestion: During the first club meeting, ask participants to define "diversity." That conversation could prove to be your "mission statement." #champforkids
A3 I felt I had the "right stuff" once something clicked internally that it doesn't matter what other staff think about my ideas, if I truly believe it will better S's then it's what I need to do! Starting a diversity club this fall! #champforkids
A4: I want to be quicker with written feedback this year. I was quick with verbal feedback, but am working on ways to decrease wait time on written feedback. #champforkids
A4: I want to lead more PDs on my campus to grow and encourage other teachers. I’m hoping that they will want to step up and teach others what they know as well! I want to change the culture on my campus and make walkthroughs a learning experience instead of scary! #ChampforKids
A4 I have yet again found myself in a new place this coming school year. I need to be very intentional about change as I need to respect culture that exists but at the same time rebuilding and establishing new #champforkids
A4 #champforkids I want to keep things simple as much as I can. Yes, I will be open to new ideas, but I’m not going to take on added responsibilities. I need to focus on what will help our students to be successful learners.
A3 For our district I have been excited to collaborate with other departments to provide professional learning for TAs as well as school admin. Our dept rocks professional learning. #champforkids

This year I get to teach with @techieteachott. I am anxious to let another progressive professional guide my change and development!
A4: I want to continue to build an awareness about the importance of our students' social/emotional characteristics and begin to put strategies into place to assist ALL students in this area. #champforkids
#ChampforKids I am bringing a minimalism of design- less posters and clutter- more accessible walls for students to add their touch. I want students to create the space.
A4: I am TRYING to gamify my Economics classes this year- definitely following @MeehanEDU and @mrmatera to figure out how to make this happen! #champforkids
A4: I need to do a better job of sharing my voice. I have been reluctant about sharing some of my experiences through writing. One of these days, hopefully very soon, I will put those thoughts on paper. #champforkids
A5: even though I said it as an answer to #4, it's important enough to say it again: I'm saying bye, bye, bye to grades. No more grades in my classroom, just learning, reflection, metacognition, and evaluation of learning.
#champforkids#TG2Chat#ttog
A5 - I think this year I am going to say bye, bye, bye to the way that I conducted my cluster collaborations. I want to revamp the little bit of time that we have together to be as productive as possible and also incorporate more gifted SEL training into that time! #champforkids
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
A4 - Looking to have my classes spread positivity more globally. Either through a blog, twitter or some other way that promotes the chance to make the world a better place. #champforkids
A4 I would like to place additional celebrations of students on our school calendar. I would like to recognize them for academic performance, consistent effort, demonstrations of positive leadership, and social/emotional growth #champforkids
A4 I want to see our admins, Ts, but most importantly our Ss adjust to blended learning environments. It will take the team to achieve this dream! #champforkids
A4: I am restructuring my class to give students more choice, not quite self paced but definitely having that feel... I am hoping it frees me up to build relationships and spend more time getting to know my students both as learners and as people #champforkids
A4 The greatest thing I want to change is not getting roped into the drama with colleagues and adjust my focus to my Ss. It's pains me to say b/c that means my focus hasn't always been on my Ss as much as it should've been. #champforkids
#champforkids A4 everything's changing for me new school new grade. I want to grow this year. I want to spread more #joy in my classroom and school. :)
A3: This was my first year doing flexible seating. I really had to change my mindset from what I was used to, but the results I saw was amazing. They were more empowered to do and give their best. #champforkids
A5: In order to be a #champforkids, I will no longer allow someone else's negative attitude keep me from doing what's right for others. Just because there is one naysayer, doesn't mean the rest aren't willing and ready to take a risk. I am determined to do whatever it takes.
A4: I would love to do more with my K-2 Ts next year, integrating their class sets of iPads with engaging lessons that spotlight choice and voice! #champforkids
A3: My district adopted the growth mindset last year. It’s great because we let go of that one and done mindset. Ts and Ss realized that failure is just the first step of learning and growth. #champforkids
A3: I CANNOT wait to get this school year started. Our school has all the right stuff for an awesome year this year. Fantastic staff (@Roger_R_Bell), an awesome network (@newtechnetwork) and tons of support from a central level @CravenCoSchools! #ChampForKids#LetsGetIt
When Ts feel supported they will stretch their wings and really soar, but if they are hesitant bc they feel unsure about what admin will think/say they will never leave the nest! #champforkids
Check in with @EddiesClass. Solid dude from Bakersfield, CA doing amazing things every day with his students. Flipping the way we view education. #champforkids

It’s so hard for me as a reading specialist to say no. However, I’ve learned how to prioritize and the answer isn’t no (as in never) but not right now. #ChampforKids
A4: The next time I’m teaching, I’d like to lead some PDs and help others do classroom transformations and tie it to amazing learning activities! #champforkids
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
A5: I'm done worrying about what others think! I'm ready to embrace my craziness in the classroom, and if others have a problem with it, so be it. #champforkids
A4 The greatest thing I want to change is not getting roped into the drama with colleagues and adjust my focus to my Ss. It's pains me to say b/c that means my focus hasn't always been on my Ss as much as it should've been. #champforkids
A5: For sure am done with being afraid to put myself out there. I'm not afraid to say "no", I'm not afraid to write and put my thoughts out there to share with others, and I'm def not afraid to speak up for my Ss. https://t.co/xJLCF8Zu5J.Fear. #champforkids

#ChampforKids Multiple-choice exams. I am writing more reflective assessments as well as collaborative ways to demonstrate knowledge rather than tests. Lab sheets, bye bye and student podcasts of labs and activities, hello 💥
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
A4: I made the change to try out in summer school, to see if it would work. I got a smaller table, took off the legs, dumped the chairs. We all sit on the floor with pillows. It feels more family like in my space now. #champforkids
A5: Getting hung up on negative people. I need to walk away, find positive folks, and recenter my focus. I might need to have a direct line to both @cristinadajero and @khoggardGRT this year. #champforkids
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
A5: I would like to say bye to being afraid to take chances. I try to be innovative and want to branch out of my comfort zone, but, at times, I just have to find a system and stick to it while reflecting on it. This way, I can make changes and adapt it as I go. #champforkids
YES! We have JOY scattered all throughout our Innovation Lab - from pillows to signs, even Joy rocks scattered throughout the room! Joy brightens every day! #champforkids

A1. Compassionate - helps me meet my kids, parents, staff, colleagues & community right where they are so that we work together to get to where we need to go. Part of my why!

Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
A5: shifting the mindset from "Classroom Teacher" to "School Teacher." If we are going to move our school in the direction we need it to, we must see ALL students as OUR students #champforkids
A5 Something I’ve been doing that I need to say bye bye bye to is self doubt and comparison. I need to work on being more confident and comfortable being me. #champforkids
Me too!!! "NO" is so hard to say, but I realize that stretching myself too thin is doing a disservice for ALL the kids. I've got to remember self-care (Thanks @thezenteacher#zenteacher) #champforkids
In reply to
@CristinaDajero, @Grade4Hernandez, @thezenteacher
A5: Saying "yes" to everything. I heard at a conference this last week... "We must say no to some things, in order for our yes to mean something." #champforkids
A5 I am saying byebyebye to my pacing guide. I want my students questions to drive where my instruction goes! Math doesn’t have to be linear! #champforkids
A5 - I am going to avoid any homework! I find that the overall impact isn’t positive or even driven by learning. Yes, I’m some cases it can be helpful. But, from what I’ve observed, the majority don’t value it or enjoy it. #champforkids
A4: Instead of apologizing for all testing our HS kids participate in... change they voice into one of belief in them do they excel!!! I want to see learning in the classroom transformed to completely engaging! EVERDAY! #champforkids
A4 This past year we were able to shadow a high school student. This was an eye-opening experience. I would love to see more opportunities to shadow on the middle and elementary levels. #ChampforKids

No matter how long it takes, it WILL be worth it. @khoggardGRT built a relationship with S & it took awhile to get through. On promotion day, he walked off stage- came & gave me a hug & said Thank you. He had me in tears, never expected that & meant the world #champforkids
Your vulnerability is everything #REALedu emphasizes! Stepping away from the drama really does free up your mindset to do amazing things! #champforkids
A5: In order to be a #champforkids, I will no longer allow someone else's negative attitude keep me from doing what's right for others. Just because there is one naysayer, doesn't mean the rest aren't willing and ready to take a risk. I am determined to do whatever it takes.
I am ready to take more risks and try new things- like integrating more technology but keeping the focus on digits (hands on) rather than digital #ChampForKids
"We've come to the end of the road, still I can't let go..."
Thanks so much for jamming out! Be sure to follow all of our #champforkids fam and sign up for reminders!
A5: Dwelling on negativity and what other people say. I’m going to stay positive, keep doing my thing, and do what is best for the Ss in our care. No one else is going to bring me down. #champforkids
You are an amazing inspiration! I'll just copy & paste your message from earlier and send it back to you when you need it! It made me smile and cry at the same time today! Thanks buddy! #champforkids
A5: I’m done with second guessing myself and over analyzing every failure! I know @lisaalford66@caseyriles@jhugheswm@AMBecky and @dmrische know how hard I am on myself. I’m trying hard to learn from the situation and then actually moving on from it! #champforkids
A4: This year I want to focus more on content integration and mindfulness. I’m currently reading, “ Sharing Book Talking Science and my mind is overwhelmed with ideas. I’ve touched on mindfulness this past year, but hope to go further this year.#champforkids
A4. I want to continue to improve on deepening our understanding of the impact of trauma and poverty on our students' behavior in the classroom, making sure that my teachers are equipped to better help & support our kids in this area. #champforkids
A5 #champforkids I plan to continue eliminating clutter/excess materials as I enter my 18th year of teaching. If it’s left over from last century, then it’s probably outdated, and my students don’t need it! “Bye, Bye, Bye” work books from 1999! 😂
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
A5: ❤️ this boy band theme... I’m saying bye, bye, bye to evals without prior non-eval feedback. Time to let my Ts know exactly what I’m looking for so that Ts can be a #champforkids
A5: Last year, it was bye, bye, bye to Accelerated Reader. This year, it's so long to timed fact multiplication drills. When we know better, we do better! #champforkids
A special thanks to @khoggardGRT for an engaging #champforkids chat tonight! So happy I could make it tonight! Looking forward to connecting with you all!
A5 Completely agree! Homework has lost its value (did it ever really have any?); I encourage Ts to use the workshop or stations model. Happy to explain... #champforkids
A5 - I am going to avoid any homework! I find that the overall impact isn’t positive or even driven by learning. Yes, I’m some cases it can be helpful. But, from what I’ve observed, the majority don’t value it or enjoy it. #champforkids
A4: I want to change the perspective this year. I want to change the way our students view school and the way parents and stakeholders in the community view the school. We're all in this together. #RunToSchool#ChampForKids
Thank you once again @khoggardGRT for an amazing night, great theme, and powerful questions to help us reflect on how we can be better #champforkids. Don't forget to follow the amazing educators and expand your PLN!
This is huge! As a first year teacher, I'm bookmarking many of the various education chats this summer - and #champforkids is giving me plenty to contemplate!
A3. Kids knew they were loved & supported...no matter what! We focused on helping kids self-regulate & keep themselves in check. Huge impact! Major reduction in disruptive outbursts. We also created a safe place for kids to be. 14 lives saved...literally! #champforkids
Q3 - "You've got the right stuff..."

A5: I'm going to say bye to keeping thoughts to myself. I will process what I want to say and work on saying in a constructive manner that is supportive. #champforkids
Q5: This year, I’m not going to wait for others to give me permission to try new things. If it fails, it fails, but I know what to do better tomorrow! #ChampforKids
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
I am excited about the use of Screencastify used by Ss. I have seen them share and explain their learning. They even created a how to video to teach their teachers! Powerful! #champforkids@jehaws
Thank you @khoggardGRT for being a #champforkids. Your questions promoted a #teachpos attitude and they are all about @KidsDeserveIt. The positivity and answers speak to what makes teaching one of the best careers in the world. Not a job!!
Q5: Worrying too much about what others think. I want to focus on what is best for me and my students. I am happy to help and collaborate with everyone, but my students come first. #champforkids
A5 Headed into the 3rd year with Student 1:1 tech, I am going to say "bye bye bye" to the push of technology for every student. Just b/c we live in a tech world, doesn't mean every student likes it; some do still like paper & pencil 😱 #champforkids
A5: TALKING! I am going to work on figuring out the best way to really get students to master the content, which usually involves less of me. A student could go over the QOD! They could talk me through a problem while I just scribe! I need to shhhhh #champforkids
Q5 - "Baby, bye, bye, bye..."
What is something that you have been doing in the past, but have decided to say, "Bye, bye, bye" to this year? #champforkids
I know that feeling well. Although last year at the #KaganSA was when I initially got my 1st feeling like I am somebody & I have something to offer. I need to remember that more often. I have horrible self esteem. Admitting you have a problem is the 1st step right? #ChampforKids
#champforkids Honestly, my PLN has given me so much confidence in the things I practice and believe. I am done letting my immediate peers make me doubt what I'm doing.
Thank you so much for all your super awesome 90s boy band questions in #champforkids@khoggardGRT - great stuff! You rock my socks off! Thankful for your friendship! Love this crew of amazing people!
A5 Sometimes asking the “what if” questions can keep us stuck. We keep asking the questions and the work doesn’t happen. I will ask fewer “what ifs” and jump into seeing what happens. I need to be more flexible in my thinking sometimes. #champforkids

Q5 I'd like to say Bye Bye Bye to teaching without the T present. It isn't coaching and takes a lot of time to plan. If I still have that responsibility then I will use the time to try new tools. #Guineapigs#Champforkids#VBITS
A5. 🤔🤔🤔 GEEEE.. I took a HUGE leap last year & got rid of behavior chart, more tables, homework, spelling tests, hard chairs... Have to think more on that one🙃 #champforkids
I had a principal make the following statement - "We are a school, not a museum." From that point on I have done a pretty good job of dumping the old. It helps that I move rooms almost yearly - if I didn't use it in that year then I don't need it! #champforkids
A5: This year I am saying bye, bye, bye to busy work in the mornings. I have always had my students get busy with seat work right away as soon as they come in in the morning. This year, I will have them engaged and discovering from the moment they walk in the door. #ChampForKids
Great job @khoggardGRT leading #champforkids tonight! I’m excited to have you in my #pln and look forward to learning more from you and others who joined this evening. It’s not the end of the road, it’s the beginning of a new journey!
This was my conversation with my cooperating teacher in student teaching when a computer virus knocked out tech school wide for a week and a half. We were using butcher paper for whiteboards b/c the dry erase boards had been shoved in corners. It was fascinating. #champforkids

Yes! I would love to challenge other #champforkids fam to think about their morning routines and look for more authentic ways to engage Ss first thing in the morning! @Grade4Hernandez the challenge is ON! ❤️️🥊

Thanks #champforkids family & @khoggardGRT for a great chat. I finish summer school tomorrow and have just over 2 weeks until I go back for the fall. I have hit a brick wall the last week or so, but I'm feelinig energized tonight!
A5 THANK YOU! It is so frustrating to see the push for ALL things tech. The lesson should drive the technology, not the other way around! #champforkids

I believe I heard @ILThunderbirdAP say this before!!! With all of the tech we have today the need for saving a bunch of paper is just silly! #champforkids

Yes girl! We did @ScratchJr with our 2nd graders. I made a little scavenger hunt for them to explore the tools and then we let them code their own fairytales... What?!?!? they were amazing! Happy to share! #champforkids
