Our elementary school opens the doors at 7:30, kids arrive to the classroom at 7:50. I'm not sure if changing the time would help or not, but it would hurt working parents that have an 8:00 shift. #bfc530

First bell 8:46, Dragon Time (Home Room) at 9am. First class 9:15am. I think that’s about perfect for middle schoolers. Out at 4:15pm with time to get all their crazy afternoon activities done. It’s HS that needs to shift til later, I think #bfc530

School time for me is 8 AM ... HS starts earlier ... 7:30ish ... other middle schools 8:30ish ... I wonder how much school time has to do with what is best for the kids than what is a good drop off time for parents and their work schedule. #bfc530
Gm. We have pushed start time to 7:40 for high school. It has pushed elementary start to 9 . It has caused problems for parents who need before care . To me, it wasn’t worth it. I’m from “do what u gotta do “ school of thought. If it starts early Be there. #BFC530

My own kids Middle School start at 8:00. My job starts at 8:03. But we have Z block for some kids starts at 7:30. I always thought the start times were because of after school sports...

730 start end 230. Would like to start later. Kids and staff seem more energetic on delayed opening. Not a "scientific" observation, I realize there are other factors that go along with that. #bfc530
We start at 8:50 am. In conjunction with the start of the school day, I wonder about factors such as what we do at the start of the school day with students, eating patterns, and how we promote improvement in sleeping patterns (health and wellness). #bfc530

Our homeroom starts at 7:30 and first class at 7:45. School ends at 2:30.
We tried to change the start time, but it gets so incredibly hot in the afternoon (& we have no AC) Also caused friction with after school activities, so no one was on board.

Kids come in at 7:30, school starts at 7:50. It’s on the early side for sure and harder for our older students. We get out at 3:00, and many kids come to the after school program that lasts until 5:00. #bfc530
Our MS day starts at 7:55, students can arrive and be supervised at 7:30, our day ends at 2:45 During the dead of winter it can be dark until the first class begins. #bfc530
It used used for individualized support for students. Each student has an assigned room then go to see teachers or stay in the room to work on their own. #bfc530

My town of residence is 45 minutes later for elem ed schools. Meanwhile, my 16 year old whose brain structure is wired for a later start and finish is up at 5 trying to wake up with a 20-min shower each day. That kid is fried by the time he gets home at 2.

#bfc530#School start time is a complicated topic. #RickWormeli has done extensive research on this. While #middleschool and #highschool students work after school, have sports, drama, etc., sleep deprivation is not good for anyone.
I've heard the sports arguments too. As a coach, I know it comes into play late fall & early spring. Could it be solved by allowing athletes out early for games during those times of year to get games in before dark? Small Pct shouldnt drive policy #bfc530

Although nothing is prescribed I note that high school tends to start around 8:40 and primary school tends to start at 9:00. I think it's to assist parents with drop offs #bfc530
I agree. I think about how much of a toll it takes for some just to stay stationary on the school bus- and then again at the breakfast table- so when they enter into class we have unstructured open play- I love watching how some just need to MOVE #bfc530

Good Morning (Evening), Donna in Singapore. I have 2 small children so I go to bed with them, and wake up around 3.30am to write books, book chapters, and journal articles etc. Mornings are great !! #bfc530
We tried to have 2 seperate start times. An early one for those Ss who wanted it and a late one for the others. Once the Ss realized that the late start meant going home at 3:45, they said "no!"
But at least we tried 😋

Our district seems tied to our schedule due to the bus company we contract with and the sports/after school legacy at the HS. We talk about changing things based on learning needs, but there is no political will to actually do it. #bfc530

Health and wellness rhythms are important factors for Ss whose home life may be out of synch or who may be relying on system for essentials. Prioritize Ss health in the schedule. #bfc530
I love that my kiddo’s school doesn’t start until 8:30. Unfortunately though, I drop them off at before care by 7 so I can get to my school on time. Unless we could all afford Nannies, there’s no perfect solution to this, but still worth trying #bfc530

The year I started in my district 20 yrs ago did exactly that. One bus making two runs (one for middle school, one for elementary) was cheaper than extra buses to make one complete run. Up until then, all schools started at same time. #bfc530
Good morning #BFC530. Our school@day starts at 7:30. Starting an hour later would have a huge impact. For one I wouldn’t be so groggy having to get up at 5:10.
I really wonder if a later start time would truly be helpful. During the summer many of our Ss sleep past midday - and we really can't change the day that much.

And it always seems the older the student, the earlier the start. Except the town next to me that middle school starts later than elementary. In terms of sports, our games with them always starts later than with other schools #bfc530
It's run by volunteers- there are support staff, parents and admin pitching in. Teachers typically don't sit down with the Ss but are there to help cut pancakes :) #bfc530
We don't have busses, so Ps drive Ss to school. Another reason we can't start MS and HS later than ES. Parents would not be happy!

I grew up in a highly dense but small town (less than .75 miles square) We could walk to our schools no buses. We started at 8:15 ended at 3:15 and had an hour off for lunch/recess in the middle of the day. That was a great schedule #bfc530
We are a rural district as well and some students in our “hilltowns” wait outside in the dark, frigid air to travel in to school during the winter. #bfc530

My wife has a tough time getting my oldest out the door to the bus. Next year in middle school it will be an hour and a half earlier. Yikes! She's not looking forward to it #bfc530

Humidity makes all the difference. I traveled in India where the heat was 47 degrees C. but dry and I really didn't mind it. Here the high humidity makes 35 degrees unbearable. After a shower we never really dry off.

Yeah. It’s complicated. Later starts mean later dismissal. When students don’t get home until five or later, it doesn’t leave a lot of time for homework and family time. #bfc530
The thing about #bfc530 that everyone is missing is that we are on the verge of runaway climate change and we need a complete re-think of the global economy to ensure a just society & avoid planetary catastrophe.
Not easy, but may work could have rewards Know Ss needs. Identify general wellness patterns for rest and eating and work to schedule for maximal effect. If 50%+ Ss are in food deserts, scheduling early nutrition a must. #bfc530
I’m aware of busy households where students rush out/are rushed out in the morning without breakfast...nothing to do with socio-economic needs. Sometimes it has a lot to do with prioritizing. #bfc530

Currently at our HS, we start at 8:05 and end at 3:03 (47 min for 7 periods, 4 min bells, 30 min lunch, and 20 min Advisory at the end of the day). Big impact would be the surrounding grade schools and the HS share buses. #bfc530
My district's middle and high schools start around 7:30 am; elementary schools start around 9:00 am. The primary reason is transportation logistics, followed by scheduling extracurriculars. What's developmentally best for children doesn't seem to factor in at all. #bfc530
We are an elementary school (K-8) that starts at 9:00 am and finish at 3:40 pm. I still have a couple of Ss come in late or sleepy, but it seems to work for most 👍🏻 #bfc530
