❇️Hi #masterychat I’m Marcia from Atwater CA! #tosa new teacher induction mentor! My #OneWord2019#gratitude 💜will help guide me through good & challenging times! ❤️I’m grateful for my family, career, colleagues😇
Hello, #MasteryChat! Rena Hawkins here. Proud principal @MapleWarriors and co-host of #ShareMOEdu podcast. Today we feel pride as we aired our 50th episode! This visual represents courage, connections, adventure, and fun!
#masterychat Jerry Toups HS Math Tr from the Houston TX area. My visual is my #AlwaysBelieve wall that features my 1st rule since I started teaching in 1990. Always Believe in Yourself. Using this rule I have inspired my Ss and practically changed lives for the better.
Hello #MasteryChat! I just got home, and I am excited to learn! My name is Tika, and I serve 27 amazing 2nd graders and mentor fabulous teachers in Las Vegas😊
A1 - Visual thinking means that students / learners can be explicit about the processes and steps they are taking in making meaning of content. #masterychat

Picture of my classroom. What’s a more meaningful image than the place you get to fulfill your “why”?
It’s where I seek to change the world by “empowering others through positivity”
#MasteryChat
A1: when I see the words “visual thinking” the first thing that comes to my mind is sketchnoting. I’ve been learning & practicing it a lot lately, really enjoying how I retain more when I sketchnote notes #masterychat#sketchnote
Hey, #MasteryChat colleagues! Alicia from Arkansas here. My visual is meaningful to me because a lot of hard work went into earning those two micro-credentials this past Fall. I love learning and growing to better students' education.
A1- Missed intros...Tyler from Illinois. High school teacher. Visual thinking to me is pulling thoughts, images, and concepts and constructing a product to reflect those thoughts. #Masterychat
A1: It makes me think of an awesome strategy that one of our 4th grade teachers use - making a “mind movie” - where you take a written passage/story and then try to ‘see’ the action mentally. Greatly aids comprehension! #masterychat
A1 Visual thinking means allowing ss to express themselves through visuals. Creating drawings, sketching, videos anything that helps create lasting understanding #MasteryChat
A1- Missed intros...Tyler from Illinois. High school teacher. Visual thinking to me is pulling thoughts, images, and concepts and constructing a product to reflect those thoughts. #Masterychat
A1 Visual thinking brings to mind cognitive processes that we can see, hear, observe and support. Connects with building an environment of active learning for our Ss where they have the opportunity to share this visual thinking with their peers #MasteryChat
Hi there, folks! This is Sherri with @ThirstyBeesNY, educator in the Catskills. This image is my happy place. It's in Death Valley, and it's where The Thirsty Bees were born! #masterychat
A1: Visual thinking is seeing your thoughts/words in pictures before words. Sketchnoting is my favorite way to make thinking visible with pictures. #masterychat
A1: To me visual thinking is being able to demonstrate, explain, clarify in a visual way, all the thought processes that go on inside our heads while we are learning. Could be images, drawings, tables, lists, mindmaps, videos, etc #MasteryChat
A1 Visual thinking is a way of connecting thought patterns to images or visual patterns to either connect in your mind, or physically connect ideas #masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat Melissa from NM! Was so excited to be successful making my first @Bitmoji...A1: I'm going to answer with the an obviously simple being able to think of something using visual images in your mind..maybe pictures, words, symbols...
Just tweeted what I'm currently dug in. Avery Mullen here reporting to you from THE City University of New York. I am a Higher Education Director ✌🏾🖐🏾🖐🏾🖐🏾 #masterychat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A1: It makes me think of an awesome strategy that one of our 4th grade teachers use - making a “mind movie” - where you take a written passage/story and then try to ‘see’ the action mentally. Greatly aids comprehension! #masterychat
Hello #masterychat family!
Teresa Engler Dynamic Learning Project tech coach from PA so happy to join in the chat!
The best visual image for me is any picture of my son! This is my son on the first day of preschool He is a lawyer now but any picture of him makes me happy!
A1 Visual thinking to me means picturing images in my head as solve a problem or encounter text, etc. I am a very visual thinker! Graphics and organizers help me process information. #masterychat
A1: In writing, visual thinking would most likely be produced by diagrams, outlines, mapping, or even image-based arguments. Even an Internet meme can make a great rhetorical argument. #masterychat
Tiffany Ott here and I am excited for #Masterychat tonight! This visual says it all for me- inspired by my sometimes neglected yoga practice, "Be patient. All is coming."
Hey #MasteryChat friends. I’m here and catching up on some observations so I’ll be retweeting and liking and trying my best to jump in. Didn’t want to miss the chat.
A1 When I think of visual thinking, I mentally picture math problems as real stories. I picture myself being in a book with other characters. #masterychat
A1)When I hear visual thinking i imagine being able to put your train of thoughts in action and in a visual that allows you to make sense of them and helps you build a roadmap to implementing those thoughts. #MasteryChat
A1: It reminds me of #metacognition. Helping students think about their thinking and make their thinking visible to others. Think alouds etc. #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A1: I think of the CRA model in math. Using visuals to move from concrete to representational. Instead of using place value blocks, students can draw the models to explain thinking. A way for students process information. #MasteryChat
A1: visual thinking is a process in which an individual making their thoughts on a form that others can see. Examples kwl charts, notes, venn diagrams, etc.
#MasteryChat
A2: I have discovered in my ELA classroom that many students struggle with the complexity of text. They need to be able to picture what they are reading as well. This is especially useful with ELL students. #masterychat
Visual thinking is any process of illustrating the PROCESS of thinking. Permanent, digital, transferable, wordy, wordless, chaotic, or ordered... but to the producer, it makes sense. I do my best creative planning when I make sketches in my visual thinking. #masterychat
A2: A picture is worth a thousand words, and matching the right words with an image for students/colleagues can lead to a deeper understanding. #masterychat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A1: Visual thinking is envisioning a finished product. Processing a future event to have an idea of what you'd like the final result to be.
#MasteryChat
A1 Visual thinking is when the thought process slows down in our heads and we can see the solution clearly in our minds...cool when you see a student have that look of visual thinking on their face #masterychat
A1: When I think of visual thinking, I imagine creating mental pictures using the 5 senses to paint the visuals in my mind. My mom used to say this a lot, when she was teaching me how to read as a kid. Close your eyes after reading, what do you see? #MasteryChat
A1 My first reaction upon hearing the chat topic was "Making Thinking Visible,." so I was thinking data and effect size and such. I am really interested in learning about making thinking VISUAL! There is so much research to support visual encoding of information! #Masterychat
A2: I find visuals (ie, sketchnotes) “stick” more. Ex, the image below I have posted on my small board near my desk. It sticks in my daily thinking more and reminds me to use the “try” column more #masterychat
A2: We should use images while teaching because dual coding can be a powerful teaching/learning strategy. It also helps ELL's when the images are well labelled.
https://t.co/ZLqTbvXzNP#masterychat
A1: the term “visual thinking” makes me think about students sharing their understandings & thoughts in non-traditional ways like drawing, sculpture, or dance. #MasteryChat
We are ready to start! Welcome to #MasteryChat! I am Clint, here with @woodard_julie and we are your moderators tonight. Introduce yourself and share a visual that is meaningful to you and why!
A1: being able to create a visual of what is happening in your head. Drawing, creating, writing, possibilities are endless. Visual thinking can also be used to give context to help understanding, so Ss can get a picture in their head #masterychat
A1- I love visual thinking in the classroom. Graffiti walls are one of my favorite activities. Kids constructing and creating a visual based on their interpretations and views allows for such a powerful way to show comprehension. #MasteryChat
A2- it's that old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes just SEEING it, or seeing how parts connect together, sequence, etc. helps explain better than words can. It helps imagine connections between parts. #MasteryChat
Gary, former Supt, now trainer for character counts. Visual Thinking for me is using art as a tool to teach communication. Our Way To Go series uses this strategy w/ lessons for Ss Gr 3-12
#masterychat
A1: I think Visual Thinking goes beyond the obvious of working with visuals or imagining visually. I think it includes the rest of the senses - sounds, smells, textures, even tastes. I say this because I'm a visual thinker, and that's my experience. #masterychat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A1 I immediately think about my whiteboard in my office when I hear this. For me its plotting out my ideas and brainstorming outwardly in order to appropriately implement processes 🤔👌🏾 #MasteryChat
A2 - Visual thinking provides a personal and visceral connection to content. Words are created and developed from existing contexts, while images are personalized and created from one's "self" making them more connected to meaning for the creator. #masterychat
A2)It is like the old adage. A picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes we are able to pick up subtleties better through visual means. We live in such a visually rich world that this is how we communicate nowadays. #MasteryChat
A2: #MasteryChat Because images are powerful. Images shape us and change us. Images, positive or negative, change us forever.
I will never forget seeing my sons for the 1st time or my dad for the last time. Those images are forever with me.
A2: Visual thinking helps cater to all learning styles, esp if given choice of what the 'visual' is. By creating a visual of learning we are consolidating our understanding, & more likely to retain knowledge. Great eg. #BookSnaps by @TaraMartinEDU for comprehension #MasteryChat
Hi #MasteryChat fam! A2: my Ss & I were just discussing the power of an image. We were saying it’s the combo of supporting text w/ a great visual/ animation that is powerful& more importantly how the r used 2gether. This is a skill that must be taught
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A2: it brings about a conversation, a dialogue...you can form questions, answers and use it to make judgements/predictions on what ever it is we seek to accomplish...a picture is worth a thousand words...they stir emotion, controversy, et...#masterychat
A2: there is sound research showing focused mental practice on an instrument activates the same parts of the brain as actually playing. If done well and purposeful your brain doesn’t know the difference. Kids with injuries or illness can still improve #masterychat
A2: It takes sophisticated synthesis to transfer learning into a visual representation of that learning. I also like to do the reverse. Provide a visual image and ask students to make a connection between the image and what they have learned. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A2 Visual thinking makes items become concrete and real. When solving for volume if you post physical models of cubic inches, cubic centimeters, and cubic feet, the kids will actually VISUALIZE what 98 cc's looks like. The learning becomes "real".
A2 A picture is worth 1000 words. Helps us access information engaging more of our brains. I just learned how to create infographics with @MindShiftKQED@KQED#masterychat
You should use visual thinking to access those experiential-deep seeded memory banks like in the movie Inside Out with both ss and colleagues @insideout#MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A2 Using visual thinking with any type of learning (adult or child) offers another tool to help the learner process the information. Visual guides are reference points for learners to go back to in their mind and form connections to new learning. #masterychat
Visuals help the message "stick". For example, using OG or multi sensory approaches to teach phonics has been proven to yield better results. Why? In part the visuals that are a part of the process. #masterychat
Right! It doesn't have to be super pretty or colorful. It needs to get to the heart of the instruction/learning. These are all great examples! #MasteryChat
A1: visual thinking is a process in which an individual making their thoughts on a form that others can see. Examples kwl charts, notes, venn diagrams, etc.
#MasteryChat
A2 visual thinking is still a way of coding symbols. It helps associate and organize ideas together in new ways. Develops critical thinking. #masterychat
A1: I remember in middle sch it was brought to my attention that I read as though I were reading out loud, even if I wasn't making any noise. I read phonetically in my head.
I imagine "visual thinking" as picturing the ideas that you are thinking about. #MasteryChat
Purposeful Visuals allow students to take a mental picture of the information. Then you don't just understand the idea, but understand its purpose #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A2 For the classroom students may interact better with visualization. For my staff members, specifically, we get to have a visual canvas for our thoughts and ideas that we are able to share. #MasteryChat
A2) Visual thinking allows learners to make meaningful connections to their learning. It allows for quicker and easier retrieval later on. #MasteryChat
A2 Visual thinking not only only us to navigate our own logic but provides opportunities for us to portray, explain, and collaboratively reflect on this thinking with others. Visual images allows us to connect the dots and establish new schema connected to new ideas #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A1 Hello I'm Angie and I teach 4th. Sorry I'm late! Visual thinking is building a response or idea from our thoughts and sharing them. In the class, that means giving the opportunity to share that thinking. #masterychat
A2: Visual thinking is phenomenal. We live in a vision-oriented society, so bringing it to the classroom only fosters growth. Plus, images put kids places. Teaching history, it’s great for my students to SEE history instead of just reading about it. #MasteryChat
A1: visual learning brings to my mind different learning styles and approaches. Charts, maps, pictures, etc... Basically everything that happens in school except for direct teaching. #MasteryChat
A2 there is the saying that seeing is believing and creating visuals allows others to see what/how thinking is happening. Almost every subject has the use of the creation of visuals in its anchor standards #MasteryChat
A2: I took a class on Multimedia in Classrooms which opened my mind to infographics. The statistics support students learning from images in meaningful contexts! #MasteryChat
A2 We need to engage our children our colleagues in experiences of creativity, curiosity & imagination - visual thinking provides a way in which to achieve this - visually they can see different possibilities #masterychat
Scanned a bunch of 'good' examples, so im sure next time will be even better! #masterychat Also noticed the exit tickets seem to reflect more understanding! 🤞🏻
In reply to
@cwilcoxKSU, @Anderson_TSOA, @PTSketchNote, @HeckAwesome
A1: Visual Thinking is guiding the students to bring their thinking out in a manner that they can reflect upon it and demonstrate their mind's process towards learning. #MasteryChat
A2 Words can only get us so far! How many times have you tried to explain something in words, only to whip out a napkin & dig up a pen from your bag so you could draw what you were trying to explain? Setting up situations for our Ss to develop this skill is key! #Masterychat
A2. Same reason we just get lost in artwork. Visuals carry so much information from design, intention, place in history, perspective. It gives voice to the voiceless. DaVinci’s anatomy sketches were heretical. That’s power. #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A2: I think in the school environment, visuals are still somewhat of a novelty. The mere surprise of seeing them might be an attention grabber! #masterychat
A2: Tapping into the sense of vision (or any of the senses) can promote stronger retention of information & it's interconnectedness to other pieces of knowledge - generalizing is so important for Ss (for us all). #MasteryChat
A2: A picture says a thousand words #AmIRight? Photos of the devastation of Europe after WW2 showed my students and helped them empathize with people more than my words could. #masterychat
Q2: I also think "visual" doesn't have to be just using the eyes. It seems deeper, meaning students can visualize something in their minds. More brain work than eye work. #masterychat
A2: learners dont all take in information the same way. A picture is worth a thousand words. If we want students to truly collaborate and contribute they need to feel like they can have a voice.
#MasteryChat
A2. Visual images (and art in general) portrays an emotion far better than words, in my opinion... that emotional connection will last in the memory forever #MasteryChat
A2)It is like the old adage. A picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes we are able to pick up subtleties better through visual means. We live in such a visually rich world that this is how we communicate nowadays. #MasteryChat
A2: Visual thinking in the classroom can solidify what we want kids to learn. I love this idea for when we read books or draw. With colleagues, I think visualization of outcomes of potentially difficult conversations might be what I would use visual thinking most.
#MasteryChat
A2: Visual thinking allows for more depth and significantly more thought. It brings out the thinking process as opposed to finding an answer. #MasteryChat
A2 - using visual learning is a way to make the material come alive for kids. It can also give some students a break from all the talk and text. #MasteryChat
A2 I think that as human beings we are visual based and take in way for information from visuals—that helps us make a mental connection. When we are part of the visuals creation it intensifies that effect. I think it is how we are built and increasingly so with tech #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
We use #schoolwide writing in elementary school, as beginning writers learn to draw their story, and then use the details in their drawing to start the writing process. #masterychat
A2: Visuals are great conversation starters. They are perfect in math because we are moving from concrete to representational to abstract. Visual helps us process and explaining our thinking/ reasoning. #MasteryChat
A1
I am an old-school visual learner I map it out in my mind....whatever it is.
I imagine and think about things before I do them. Visual imagery helps me learn new concepts & calms me in stressful situations
#masterychat
Yes! One thing I saw too, when my school taught sketchnoting last year, was that students who spoke languages other than English as their 1st found visual thinking/note-taking great because if they didn't know the words, they could just draw their thinking! #masterychat
A2 Notes, visuals, and doodles seem to leave an imprint on my brain more than words (spoken or text). Words sometimes begin to all sound and look the same, but pictures are always different (shapes, colors, feelings they emit) #MasteryChat
The visual sense is so powerful- it makes connections with color, shape, structure and pattern. This helps us remember b/c it hits a chord onso many levels. A bright, appealing visual lures in the mind and strikes interest #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
Today we civil disobedience and looked at images from Memphis, LA, Burbank, Baltimore, and Ferguson. I myself live a mile down from Ferguson and my population lives very near that area. Very powerful. #masterychat
A2: JD here from Ky but in Chicago at a conference so I’ll joining in when I can. Providing visuals will help reach more students in the way they learn best. Also help them make better connections. #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A2: Because it helps people to make a connection to what the words are saying. It makes things less abstract and more realistic (e.g. I can talk about pizza, but if I show you an image of a pizza you are more likely to imagine its taste, & maybe even crave a slice). #masterychat
A2: Perhaps the power of the image lies in its ability to connect the idea with the learner’s frame of reference. The sweet spot, I assume, would be pairing the right text with the right image, where every viewer experiences some type of cognitive reaction. #masterychat
What is so powerful about this is that even when we remove the visuals, students minds remember the location of the visual, "see it" and can remember the learning associated with the visual.
And, in truth, depending on life experiences, the messages perceived from different people can be very different, especially across time and space. #masterychat
A2: there is sound research showing focused mental practice on an instrument activates the same parts of the brain as actually playing. If done well and purposeful your brain doesn’t know the difference. Kids with injuries or illness can still improve #masterychat
A2. It addresses the learning style of some of our colleagues & Ss. It also to a certain extent promotes creativity & may be more efficient because language does not have to be decoded. Images May also be better for those who speak a languages other than English. #MasteryChat
Curious- was that brought to your attention in a positive way or a negative way? I always encourage my students to read to themselves in the same way they would read out loud! It aids so much in comprehension! #MasteryChat
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A2: In reading this quote, my mind is instantly thinking of the arts and how for both students and teachers, Art gives us a vehicle for wonder and critical thought. #MasteryChat
A1) visual thinking to me doesn’t necessarily mean illustrations; I see it as a different way of thinking; linear vs non-linear thinking, sequential vs non-sequential. #MasteryChat
Your key point is “helped them empathize.” Sure, some students can read about real-world problems and empathize, but how many more would become empathetic when they see real-world problems. #MasteryChat
Agree. These sparks of creativity help us navigate the processes of innovation. When we use visual thinking, we can use our collaborative thoughts to increase our collective capacity for positive impact with our Ss @teacherasleader#masterychat
@CRCarter313- right up your alley after that #MasteryChat you did a while ago about Creativity not equaling art skill! @RaeHughart and I were just talking about that on the pre-chat broadcast over on Facebook. What a great chat!
A2- Research has found that if you are able to create a visual image that is unique to you it then is imprinted in your memory and retention grows hugely. We are visually and socially driven in our society now. #MasteryChat
A3: Next week I get the opportunity to collaborate with a colleague and teach her Grade 4 students about visual note taking/sketchnoting! Super excited! Using #SketchnoteFever videos by @sylviaduckworth to continue learning after lesson #masterychat
A3: #MasteryChat my Ss have very limited creative outlets at🏫so anything I can do to blend creativity & expression into my lessons the Ss enjoy. Anything from posters, Coggle, sketchbook, etc I need to do more to integrate art into my lesson. @heARTISTatWORK could use your help!
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3: I will use anything that creates deep students discussion and thinking, I am not looking for recall. I use mind-mapping in table groups with ONE large paper. Reflection immediately after. #MasteryChat
From visualizing, I push students to also be able to mentally manipulate and combine thoughts and symbols, stretching that capacity to visualize pathways toward solutions #masterychat
A3: My Ss have tried many various visual thinking tools such as graffiti walls, picture-based concept maps, gallery walks, picture “What ifs?” I love it, they love it. Win-win. #MasteryChat
I think it has very little to do with drawing skills. Using these kinds of visual thinking strategies offers both a way for students to code the information in an additional way in their brain and also provides another option for how they express their understanding. #Masterychat
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3: @padlet to create a “minds on music” video bulletin board. Kids share videos of amazing playing to the pad and we show one in class each Friday from their posts and discuss #masterychat
Many more. Building shared experience is the cornerstone of empathy. Without it, most kids are just mimicking what they think they should feel #masterychat
A3: Diagrams are my bread and butter. It helps them make connections between the vocabulary and real-life. Which then helps them to elaborate and explain concepts.
#masterychat
A3 - using white board tables to display their understanding of vocabulary or ideas and then have others write their interpretation of those images #MasteryChat
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3 There are so many tools that I've used for both children and teachers and now so many online however I think there is something to say to build in visible thinking routines in all that we do in the learning process - that way it is a becomes part of your being #masterychat
A1) visual thinking to me doesn’t necessarily mean illustrations; I see it as a different way of thinking; linear vs non-linear thinking, sequential vs non-sequential. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat I painted 3 round tables with chalkboard paint and students use them to draw blueprints of designs but our main canvas is our graffiti wall
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3- @beckymurphytgms Recently did a sketchnote activity with a little spin. She had her students watch a video after 10 seconds they quickly drew what they learned. Again after a 1 minute and 10 minutes.
https://t.co/68h5hhr5Wa#MasteryChat
#masterychat A3 When teaching Geometry encourage DOODLE NOTES. Encourage the kids to use color and doodling to remember factual geometric definitions. Some examples attached.
A3: I will use anything that creates deep students discussion and thinking, I am not looking for recall. I use mind-mapping in table groups with ONE large paper. Reflection immediately after. #MasteryChat
My husband just explained the rewiring of lights he was working on in our house with napkins, forks, and ketchup while we were at @Applebees the other day! #Masterychat
A3 When working with vocabulary, I often use the Frayer model which requires students draw a picture to represent the word. With tech, I have them create a slideshow where they define the word, use it in a sentence, and find an image that matches their context. #masterychat
A3: As a teacher and principal, I've seen all the above. I encourage my teachers to do whatever they to bring the lesson "alive"...we use a program called Artful Reading...it's an awesome way to tie literacy and the arts into curriculum. #masterychat
I just did a playdough activity where students recreated figurative language. My honors kids struggled but my students who generally needed support finally GOT IT! #masterychat
A3: I actually am working with my staff on developing their #WHY and having them create a visual representation of their why to display in our school. Hoping the visual display in the school will help remind them & better remember why they do what they do every day! #MasteryChat
A3. We have some brave teachers that are experimenting in STEM rooms with white board tables. It allows Ss to all share ideas when it comes to designing experiments, calculations. Ss are cautious bc it’s freedom to write on the table. #MasteryChat
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3 I love sketch-noting! My ss love to doodle away when I read aloud it helps them keep the story in their head. Some of their drawings are amazing #MasteryChat
A2: Creating sensory images is a powerful way for students to connect, process, and solidify new learning especially for those learners who are visual connectors. Can also create an equitable access point for struggling readers of grade level text. #MasteryChat
Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A3: Our class uses whiteboards when solving problems to visualize the problem. Students love being able to draw out every step. I think it helps them walk through each step by using meaningful conversation, thinking, and reasoning. #MasteryChat
A1) visual thinking to me doesn’t necessarily mean illustrations; I see it as a different way of thinking; linear vs non-linear thinking, sequential vs non-sequential. #MasteryChat
A3 I have embraced sketchnoting this year with students. Overall it’s gone really well—some are reluctant but that’s ok...it’s about what works for the learner. #MasteryChat
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3) I have my learners demonstrate their knowledge in whatever visual way makes sense to them. It’s about their vision, not mine. That’s what makes this so meaningful. #MasteryChat
A3: Sketchnotes and graffiti walls are extremely popular. I've even used graffiti tables - cover a table with butcher paper and let students doodle on it during class. Also, kids love anything that utilizes video: virtual field trips, gaming, etc. #masterychat

Q2- From Vanderbilt University on Visual Thinking: “A well-designed visual image can yield a much more powerful and memorable learning experience than a mere verbal or textual description.” Why use visual thinking in the classroom or with colleagues? #MasteryChat
A3: Visual strategies that I have tried are: sketchnoting, chalk talk, graffiti wall, & sketch to stretch. When I tried them, people surprised me. Verbal peeps used lots of words, sentences, tons of labels, but the true VSLs were able to shine! #masterychat
Absolutely agree collective capacity for all so that we have collective learning that engages all and promotes all to participate that is a true learning community #MasteryChat 😊
A3: As a principal presenting data, a visual depiction - be it a graph, chart, or scatter plot - tends to make the information far more compelling AND more easily understood. #masterychat
A3: In elementary Spanish classes I 💚to use drawing when we write or take notes. It reminds me of @Highlights stories that have pictures that I read as a kid. It's an awesome way to connect vocabulary for new language learners.
#MasteryChat
Q3: Post its anyone? I may be a bit crazy with them. Realized their impact when my own 6 year old said "I have to write myself a post it note so I don't forget". #masterychat
A3 part 2 I also post an anchor chart of key learning as a reference point for students, and I try to pull images or videos if they relate to my lesson to show students. #masterychat
That is where I flew into! I ate at @kansascitybbq before heading back to the airport after my presentation. Yum! Let's connect sometime- I travel all over the place visiting schools, the next time I am around, we should definitely connect! #MasteryChat
A3: As mentioned before, I love to do the reverse--provide some random visual images & ask students to draw connections between an image they select and what they have learned. Requires synthesis & creative thinking. This summarizing strategy is always a big hit. :) #MasteryChat
Q3- There are so many visual thinking tools that we can use as educators: visual note-taking, sketch-noting, graffiti walls, and more! What have you tried with students or colleagues and how did it go? #MasteryChat
A3: I haven’t tried it, but in a previous school district, I know seniors had to reflect on their writing portfolio from all 4 years of high school and creatively represent their growth through some kind of visual art piece. So cool! #MasteryChat
A3: As a teacher and principal, I've seen all the above. I encourage my teachers to do whatever they to bring the lesson "alive"...we use a program called Artful Reading...it's an awesome way to tie literacy and the arts into curriculum. #masterychat
There is a pattern to how the bricks in a building are layed. The bricks come together to make a building. Paint color etc is word choice and contributes to the mood #masterychat
A3- Graffiti Walls, CSI Boards, Concept Webs, Battle Royale Boards, One Pagers, Body Maps, Wall Puzzles and more! Love all sorts of visual thinking activities. Kids have been very receptive and really want to make it on the wall...even my upperclassmen get into it. #masterychat
Most of my students are not familiar with the idea of "sketch notes." Sometimes that piece of info forms a bond with my artistic students who might not immediately appreciate math. #MasteryChat
A3: In the classroom, we created a gigantic timeline that merged history with text, inventions in science/math and it grew all year while we went through the courses. Admin, we did Schoolwide student data bars/graph in data rooms for PLCs. #MasteryChat
Thanks for translating for me. :) I will look into it! @RaeHughart- check it out! I know you love anything having to do with the five senses! #MasteryChat
Yes! We love using the Frayer Model in our math class. Students use it to learn vocabulary by writing and drawing the definition along with examples and non-examples. #MasteryChat
A3 When working with vocabulary, I often use the Frayer model which requires students draw a picture to represent the word. With tech, I have them create a slideshow where they define the word, use it in a sentence, and find an image that matches their context. #masterychat

A3- I use role-playing games in a variety of contexts and students love to draw their characters. It helps them visualize what equipment they have, connect to the character and stay focused when it isn't their turn #MasteryChat
A3: for the writing process for Information books, Ss first draw their ideas and write key words to get ideas flowing on a simple organizer #masterychat
A1 #masterychat Jeri fr Jersey, English T. VT 2 me means that u C words as pictures in ur head. It goes with visual learning (which describes me). It is how I organize my thoughts (in my head and on paper) to help me come to better understanding. I have LOTS of visual learners.
#masterychat A3 When teaching Geometry encourage DOODLE NOTES. Encourage the kids to use color and doodling to remember factual geometric definitions. Some examples attached.
A3. I have been out of the classroom for a while but i used picture diagrams to help students remember the elements/sequence of stories we read. (They wrote them as well) They also used diagrams to organize their writing. I hope this counts. #MasteryChat
Way to go - amazing how receptive children are to different ways of demonstrating their understandings of concepts across the learning areas when using visual tools #MasteryChat
Ooh! I love the added layer of paint color. So cool! My students sometimes roll their eyes and groan when I start diving into an analogy (again!) to explain a concetp in class- but they sure do remember the learning! #MasteryChat
A3 I did a draw and label with staff that tied concepts into a cohesive image (a tree) that was a metaphor for the purpose of the work. When the image became clear they loved it. Also, digitally infographics have been fun. #masterychat
A3 When working with vocabulary, I often use the Frayer model which requires students draw a picture to represent the word. With tech, I have them create a slideshow where they define the word, use it in a sentence, and find an image that matches their context. #masterychat
A3- two things come to mind. I often have the kids stop while reading and actually draw what they are seeing in their mind. It lets me see how they picking up on details. The other thing I do is make sure there are drawings on my classroom charts. #MasteryChat

Q4 Visual support is a phenomenal tool for ELLs and others with assorted language learning challenges, but that isn’t the only way it’s awesome! What additional uses have you found for visual thinking and visual presentations? #MasteryChat
I know teachers who had their Ss do sketchnotes on a math concept they were learning. Then they connected with another similar grade class and the Ss had to USE their sketchnotes to explain and teach the concept. It was a great way to show their learning/follow-up! #masterychat
A3: Ss are currently visualizing a story sequence, drawing storyboards, & creating physical sets for a @LEGO_Education#RoboticsWeDo@iMovie. Using technology & storytelling starting with visuals & ending with a visual product are in process & turning out 👍. #MasteryChat
Q3: brainstorming, diagrams, and mind mapping are amazing for students. According to cognitive learning theory, these tools mimic the type of connections/networking that are happening in our brain as we experience new things. A strong case for visual learning #MasteryChat
A3 part 3 I was discussing adult learning for an upcoming meeting this evening, and we talked about post-it chart paper with essential standards and actually sorting questions and placing them under the correct standard in prep. for writing a CFA. :) #masterychat
@FeatherstonPS@teachconley@megmit85 anyone have any photos from when you did sketchnoting and math last year? (just tagged the teachers who did this, hopefully someone has some photos!) #masterychat

A4 - Visual thinking or media provide a contextual display that can only be explained (usually) by the creator. By utilizing images the learner can truly defend their choices and creative process as it relates to the content and mastery of information it represents #masterychat
A3- two things come to mind. I often have the kids stop while reading and actually draw what they are seeing in their mind. It lets me see how they picking up on details. The other thing I do is make sure there are drawings on my classroom charts. #MasteryChat
Maybe consider having everyone do it instead of traditional notetaking. Your VSLs will be amaze you!! check out the Verbal to Visual Youtube videos. My students love them. https://t.co/BcOoatY47N . #masterychat
A2: Wild! I was just reading @vandycft website (right before live chat) for a blog about #Evaluating being #Classy.
Probably lots of people mentioned this, but visualizing stuff is a great mnemonic, and I think it brings the element of emotion into the experience. #MasteryChat
A4)How about getting Ss to create memes to demonstrate a higher understanding of concepts you taught in class. How fun/cool would that be? #MasteryChat
A4: I run through 6-10 images, 10 seconds each, twice. Then I ask students to tell the story that the images have created for them (US History). This works as a gateway into reading very well! Create curiosity! #MasteryChat
Q4 - it's great to support materials management checklists for my Executive Functioning Skills class. The checklist tells you how to do the steps and the picture shows you the final result. #MasteryChat
A2; let’s face it- we all picture what’s being discussed in our heads. When visuals are used, it ensures that we all have the same picture. That opens the door for more meaningful discussion #Masterychat
A3 #MasteryChat I have even tried to alter the language I use in class to use more visual terms. For example in teaching shear and moment diagrams to engineering students I now talk about (as well as show) jumps, slopes & areas vs. simply talking about “changes”
I tagged the Ts, hopefully they have examples they can share! I know the teachers had their students show their math learning through sketchnoting, then connected students and they had to explain their learning to a student who didn't know the concept yet. #masterychat
Visual Tools - the best for assessment - hands down so way better than a test - ongoing and can inform your design of future learning experiences. #MasteryChat
A4: #MasteryChat for me it’s an option for an assessment choice for the students. Anytime there is a creative option my students 🚀 themselves towards it!
Q4 Visual support is a phenomenal tool for ELLs and others with assorted language learning challenges, but that isn’t the only way it’s awesome! What additional uses have you found for visual thinking and visual presentations? #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat Absolutely the best tool is an interactive word wall- full of pictures and synonyms and visual vocabulary- a place they can add their work for other Ss as well- their space to build and learn with

A4: I love using visuals to draw out SS by telling them that however they interpret the image is drawing on their own background and history, so there is no wrong answer!#MasteryChat
A4: For a child, a visual cue could help their brain better compartmentalize their progress towards learning and it could also nonverbally help them better understand what is going on. For staff, visual cues could help them better use data to improve instruction. #MasteryChat
Q4 Visual support is a phenomenal tool for ELLs and others with assorted language learning challenges, but that isn’t the only way it’s awesome! What additional uses have you found for visual thinking and visual presentations? #MasteryChat
A3-I try to change our work medium regularly. One day we may use our notebooks, the next our white bds, a sticky note. We also change up our writing utencils. This helps them pull up the mental image & ideas. Plus we can find that info quick when it looks different #masterychat
Yes!! Check out my twitter too, I tweeted out not too long ago for sketchnoting resources and lots of great ideas and resources were shared! #masterychat
A2 #MasteryChat VT assists in making connections betw commonalities, how things can B grouped/organized. It gives individuals a chance 2 process info differently -- verbally and visually -- possibly bringing the level of comprehension and critical thinking to another level.
A4. It’s s fantastic way to hidden talents shine in my class. These types of projects/presentations allow students a different way to illustrate their understanding #MasteryChat
A4 it’s just engaging. It gets people talking. They see different things and tbh getting my shy kids to talk is hard. Visuals allow them to speak without words #masterychat

Q4: Differentiating for kindergarten and first grade requires the use of more visuals. For example, the checklists they use for editing provide pictures so that students can take more ownership of the revision process. #masterychat
A4 My Ss current project is using @WeVideo to create a welcome tour of a nat'l park; combining the verbal w/the visual at the same time give the Ss a nice experience #masterychat
A4b)Additionall, having Ss create visuals helps them showcase what they learned, especially if made from scratch. Every decision to include and exclude something conveys DOK and understanding. #MasteryChat
A4)How about getting Ss to create memes to demonstrate a higher understanding of concepts you taught in class. How fun/cool would that be? #MasteryChat
A4: SpEd students, especially those in the primary levels benefit from these when it comes to things such as self advocacy. It's about being creative and knowing our students that will bring us the best opportunities for student success. #masterychat
A4 Visual Thinking encourages people to think in different ways. It challenges your thinking. I love watching Ss share their visual thinking in math, reading, and social studies. I believe it is creates equity for Ss. #MasteryChat

A4.
If anyone or everyone can benefit than then why wouldn't we use it. I actually have 2 screens in my room so all can see anything I need bigger and better. #masterychat
I don’t lecture or have Ss “copy” notes in class but I’m thinking when there’s group discussion, & there’s note taking, it could be sketch notes. #masterychat

A3: Another visual we have started using lately is bar diagrams/models to help students set up math problems. We talk about the parts and the whole. I think it helps students process the information and determine which operation to complete. #MasteryChat
A3
We had a ms student who had a difficult time locating his classes We used color-coded dots on the class doors to let him know where to go throughout the day
I had a second grade student who used a picture of her grandmother on her desk to keep her on task
#masterychat
#masterychat A4 Do you have a class logo? Mine is a #PentagonT which is the symbol for #AlwaysBelieve My students draw Pentagon T's on EVERYTHING! Some examples are attached.

A4 My department has an abundance of inspirational/motivational decorations in our workspace. For instance we have a large board with a department photo surrounded by each staff members bitmoji. We also have pics of our work and some of our departmental outings 🙌🏾 #masterychat
Q4b - on a personal note, one of my own kids has to go to the hospital regularly & she loves looking at a photo story of her travels there, which demystified and helped her process the sometimes uncomfortable process. Photos or pictures 4 social stories are awesome #MasteryChat
A4: Allows for student choice when demonstrating understanding; awesome for differentiating; provides an 'anchor' for expectations & learning for Ss to refer to; it's engaging & fun. #MAsteryChat
A4-My most favorite reading lessons are visualization lessons. I am able to see how my ss are comprehending what they are reading. Teaching fractions to my ss has been difficult at times, but when we have tied pictures to problems their understanding improves #MasteryChat
A4 Visual tools provide open opportunities for all children to fully participate in the learning of our classrooms - a must in every classroom - they break down the barriers to learning #masterychat
A4 When teaching math, I have found that using visuals helps make math more appealing to students who come into class thinking they stink at math. Find what they're good at and use that to build a bridge to content and boost their self-confidence at the same time! #masterychat
A4. We have teachers using historical art to recognize which members of society are not present, ie women at Constitutional Convention or How images of current protests speak about regional US demographics #MasteryChat

A4 I teach in a high ELL so it’s what I really connect it too! Yet it’s important for any Ss struggling with language. Visual learning can remove that language road block to let a Ss really assess and understand what the Ss has learned #masterychat
A4 I use them when doing the VDOE presentations, presenting info to my kiddos, and showing alternatives to how they can complete certain assignments. #masterychat
A4b- promote critical thinking and collaboration. Seeing a group of 8 kids come together to create a giant graffiti wall practices so many soft skills. Love watching it all come together! #MasteryChat
Q4: Visual support is a must for any type of experiential learning. In maker spaces, Ss constantly interact with visual repesentations of their own designs and others. Students of all academic levels can collaborate and create when visuals are used instead of text. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat The master of creative visual teaching right here!! Was lucky enough to teach with Everett for a year - the products his students produced, and his amazing teaching tools, were so inspirational
A4:Ss using visual presentations thru @Seesaw this yr has opened windows for families into our class that have been priceless! Ss's taking pictures/video of their work & using drawing/text/pic tools has allowed families to see their child's work products in real time!#MasteryChat
Awesome! I have also seen students create public service announcements- great learning opportunities for the students creating the videos and a good way to log the content in the viewer's mind! #MasteryChat
My Ss used to laugh because the maps I drew were filled with circles. North America was a circle, Africa was a circle, etc. But they got the concepts I was trying to teach. Artistic skills matter not! (Though they couldn’t hurt!) #masterychat
A4) Visual support is beneficial for everyone to help make meaningful connections, not just those with learning differences. I incorporate visuals with everything, whether I provide them like doodlenotes or memes, or ones that are learner created. #MasteryChat
It is when a number of concepts, people, or ideas are debated and ranked and moved on a visual board. Starts with one group...then they join another group and the board grows and changes...then the whole class creates a final board. #MasteryChat
It's the same reason why math teachers use manipulatives and science teachers do hands on labs! Any way we can make a concept concrete and then gradually lead students to abstraction is a great way to scaffold challenging content! #MasteryChat

A4: I often use visuals to teach students about communication & language. I'll start with images of cave paintings, hieroglyphs, & petroglyphs & ask students what they think the artists were trying to communicate. We'll then jump forward to emoticons & bitmojis. #masterychat
A4
My science students took pictures of each step of their labs to retell procedures and review mistakes
They used slow motion video to see reactions This allows students to make lasting connections with the activity and learn from the process

A4c - Oh, I thought of another one. We have a morning TV show for announcements that allows us to really model Bobcat values, set the tone for the day, etc. Moving from audio announcements to video and audio has been huge for retention and culture #MasteryChat
A4: i like the many #MasteryChat members including ways to make learning more inclusive through visuals. For our ELLs, for our littles, for our students with special needs. Visuals are essential!!!
A5: Note-taking must be interactive and carry purpose for the student. They need to see and feel value in their notes for them to become better and more intentional note-takers. #MasteryChat
A5: Modeling different techniques and resources can be helpful for younger students. Providing time for students to analyze and visual is beneficial. #MasteryChat

A5: This is an area where I'll defer to others who do it better than I do. I'm looking forward to seeing some ideas to be more effective here. #MasteryChat
I was just writing a blog about the power of having students be creators and curators of the content we share through tools like @seesaw, a class blog, or @remind! Gives them real ownership AND helps me manage the workload of frequent parent communication. #MasteryChat

A5: Graphic organizers and Venn diagrams have been successful for kids when I’ve used them. Saw a triple Venn used once for a ELA lesson. Powerful! #MasteryChat
A4. I found that it was important that my Ss visualize a map of the US to really understand TX history. They had a better grasp of the wagon trains to TX from the east & the cattle drives to OK becasue they understood distances, terrain, & climate, etc. #MasteryChat
Agree; I can usually keep up, pretty well, but tonight I'm just hangin on! Take me away, #MasteryChat
I'll have to go back and reread everything. Love it!
Confession — I don’t do notes. I have students go on webqests or ask a question and make them create materials to present. We annotate and I encourage doodling ideas and emojis #masterychat
Agreed. Giving time to discuss notes, share them, collaborate on them, gives them more power! Whats 5 or 10 min out od your lesson for deep thinking?! #MasteryChat
A5b: I intentionally teach 5-9 types of note-taking at the start of the year allowing students to find their go-to version for the rest of the year! #MasteryChat
A5- Give them time to take notes and give them choice in how they write or draw their notes! We need to teach then allow them time to process it with a visual thinking activity.
#MasteryChat

A4) Visual support is beneficial for everyone to help make meaningful connections, not just those with learning differences. I incorporate visuals with everything, whether I provide them, ex. doodlenotes or memes, or ones that are learner created. #MasteryChat
A5: I like to use window notes which is folding a paper into 4 squares, or Cornell notes with a summary; what should they write? Be explicit & teach note taking, using graphic org too #masterychat
A5 @HeckAwesome has a great YouTube video to start sketchnoting with students 😀 @sylviaduckworth also has a great book to begin sketchnoting with kids #masterychat
Confession — I don’t do notes. I have students go on webqests or ask a question and make them create materials to present. We annotate and I encourage doodling ideas and emojis #masterychat
A5: I am a big fan of Cornell notes. I'm definitely not a sketcher or doodler but Cornell notes works for sketches as well. What I love is the visual representation (whether it is text or sketches) it provides for effective notetaking--summarization included! #MasteryChat
A5: for Ss notetaking that my co-Tt and I have used to far, we keep referring the Ss back to their notes to help with the final project. We want them to see it as a tool and meaningful to the process, not busy work we had them do #masterychat
A5) Just what Inwas going to say! Copying my words won’t mean a thing to them. Allow voice and choice to allow for the learners to make their own connections! #masterychat

A2: Seeing and noting my curiosity creates wonder in my peers. They want to know what I am learning and how it is working. My classroom become the "what-if" go to place. #MasteryChat
A5- Note taking time for me is never more than about 5 minutes once or twice a week. They can take notes if they want...if not our activities and experiences are what shape our thoughts and ideas on concepts. #MasteryChat
A5 I don't start with notetaking. Instead, I introduce a problem scenario and then students use their notebooks to organize their work process to figure out their solution or prove their answer. Sometimes I suggest a format (table, diagram, etc.). Other times, not. #masterychat
A5 I like to use a few Sketchnote templates giving kids an outline or structure for their note taking ... a simple outline with a few graphics to get them started .. #masterychat
A5 In math I use the #thinkingclassroom strategy, "write a note to your later, dumber self". I get students to take pictures of their worked problems and then annote them with notes that will help them later. #masterychat
A5: In E.S. we use guided notebooks that are filled with visuals and quick references for kids to go back to. Some of our older kids use guided notes where they have to follow along and fill in the missing information. #masterychat
YES! The own their work and become so much more accountable. I have also found many Ss are more willing to make revisions and improvements based on when they see their work in pic or video form, and know others will see it once they submit! #MasteryChat
This said, I am incredibly interested in these sketch-notes I’ve been admiring on everyone’s teeets tonight... something to look into for my next unit! #MasteryChat
A5: Format your notes/PPT/whiteboard writing and be consistent. Require students to follow it.
Then refer back to notes, use them as a tool. Not just a writing activity.
#masterychat
Q6- Goal setting time! Think about plans you have for upcoming learning opportunities with your students. How can you find a place to fit in some of these visual thinking strategies? #MasteryChat
I. Love. This! Much the way we do with math--teach a variety of strategies, have students learn how they all work and then select the strategy that is most effective for them! So great! #MasteryChat
A5b: I intentionally teach 5-9 types of note-taking at the start of the year allowing students to find their go-to version for the rest of the year! #MasteryChat
A5 What are children taking notes of??? It has to be meaningful - are they note taking as in lecture style presentations in the classrooms??? if so why are we still designing learning in this way???? Note taking is an important skill we need to model different ways #MasteryChat
A5-I just read an article today about ss being curators in their learning which lead to huge critical thinking. I am wanting to have my ss have more of a curator role. #MasteryChat
A5- variety. Not one organizer, chart, picture, map etc will make sense to Ss so using a variety with the same information can increase understanding. #MasteryChat
I'm a fan of color coding information: Main points, helpful tips, process/steps, etc. I don't teach in conventional classrooms, but That's my personal note-taking thing.. and definitely drawing pictures or symbols. #masterychat
A5) I keep it simple. Per #thinkingclassroom it’s called “Meaningful Notes”, or “Letters to Our Future Dumber Self”. I don’t say what to write, but I prompt with that it needs to be what they wish they’d been told when I first launched the task notes are based on. #masterychat
A5: Note-taking must be interactive and carry purpose for the student. They need to see and feel value in their notes for them to become better and more intentional note-takers. #MasteryChat
A5 Provide samples, personally model the process and be intentional in some way about clearly communicating learning goals so that their "content" aligns. #masterychat

I tried doing that this year. We only just began 1:1 @EPSDTech.
One project that I want to use visual thinking Ss will use #NotesApp to tell narrative of research to find information about an animal. #MasteryChat
A4 #MasteryChat Who says you can’t play with toys in class? I have my college sophomore engineering students play with Legos multiple days to investigate center of mass and composite bodies and also the dynamic motion of multi body systems (photo is latter)
A5) share a few different methods that simplify notes. We want to teach them options if his to take them that will be easy to review from. Note taking needs to be personalized. Everyone has different preferences with colors, line spacing, titles ect. #MasteryChat
A5. We first ask them what works for them. Also we need to teach note taking & depending on the grade level, provide notes from our classes to use a scaffold to independent note taking. I remember my style of taking notes was totally different from my roommates. #MasteryChat
A5 Some great things I've seen is adding a #sketchnote column to the Cornell notes format. We also use visual cues for the problem-solving process with CGI Math
#MasteryChat

A5: I think the key word here is "structure." Students should be able to take notes in the best way that makes sense to them. Teach them the different ways to take notes (sketch notes, hand written, typed, photos, google doodles, etc.) and then let them go. #masterychat
A5: It's not only showing note taking skills but just making our thinking visible. Sometimes Ss understand so deeply w/o notes. Some have photographic memories. Why do they have to show their understanding with notes? Documentation can happen in many ways. #masterychat
A3: Had to edit pic...We are visualizing a story sequence, drawing storyboards, & creating physical sets for a @LEGO_Education#RoboticsWeDo@iMovie. Using technology & storytelling starting with visuals & ending with a visual product are in process & turning out 👍 . #MasteryChat
I like using OneNote for collaborative notetaking. Students work in small study groups and take turns. They all tag the notes with different categories so that they can create summary sheets and add comments to draw meaning and ask questions. #MasteryChat
A5 I teach elementary most of what I teach my ss is how to find what is essential and how to take notes. I'm a fan of post-its as they read. Just trying to spark the idea that note taking is a way to interact with text #MasteryChat
Q6- Goal setting time! Think about plans you have for upcoming learning opportunities with your students. How can you find a place to fit in some of these visual thinking strategies? #MasteryChat
A5: What are notes? I encourage my Ss to take notes how they want. Granted, I teach them various ways to take notes, but they’re not a requirement or graded. #MasteryChat
I missed ya’ll tonight! School business took priority. Hope it was a fulfilling night of professional learning! I look forward to reading through your responses! #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat I plan on some dioramas and stop motion videos to accompany a graffiti wall on biomes. Plus an Edcamp on ecosystems and human impact on the environment (decorating the room like 3 types of forests) other classrooms: ocean, desert, tundra & Ss rotate

A5- we need to slow down. Ss need time to process what they just got, time to try it on & develop questions. This applies to all ages, all abilities, all language development #masterychat
A6: Goal: Read aloud in each classroom a book with a kindness theme for Valentine’s Day—allow all Ss to create a visual based on message—put on display on school walls to fill our halls with a positive message! #MasteryChat
A6: I'm going to explore sketchnotes. We have start of school our professional learning days coming up, so going to try them myself; then introduce to my Ss. #MasteryChat#TLAPdownunder
A5 teaching college students to take notes can be tricky, my presentations are on power point so most of myself Ss attempt to take pics with their phones so this is a rough one to answer for me 🤔 #masterychat
I have kept the books I read in my 11th grade English class for years because they are full of notations, meaning making, and the story of my learning journey. :) #masterychat
A6: At the high school, we have a flex time during 4th period that we can use to create enrichment, or intervention lessons embedded in this strategy. I could also work with staff during post conferences and PLCs to use this strategy to help kids. #MasteryChat
A6- So I just got a classroom set of Google Expeditions...so I have been brainstorming ways to incorporate that experience into a visual thinking activity. #MasteryChat
A6: I've used it in class as a wrap up and as a hw assignment. Will def try collaborative #sketchnotes and maybe as a 'stop and sketch' while taking notes or during a discussion. #MasteryChat
Q6- Goal setting time! Think about plans you have for upcoming learning opportunities with your students. How can you find a place to fit in some of these visual thinking strategies? #MasteryChat
a6 i have a donors choose project that I’m trying fund. I want mannequins so we can dress them up as characters and authors. Pose them to recreate the scenes we are reading. I’m $300 short :/ #masterychat
Just did an Expedition lesson today! Great way is to do a reflective writing/drawing activity after to give the students time to process the lesson. #MasteryChat

A6 Some questions to reflect upon:
How will I use visual thinking strategies?
How am I designing the learning?
What tools can be applied in the learning opportunities?
What tools/strategies will need modelling?
What tools/strategies will support/extend the learning?
#masterychat
A6 I plan for my students to do some visual note completion as a summation of our learning from the past two days. I am also going to incorporate some visual thinking into a few stations early next week. A MUST is pouring back over these tweets for amazing ideas! #masterychat
Gotta leave #MasteryChat a little early. Thank you to EVERYONE who asked questions and shared ideas and resources. THIS is what will make learning better for Ss!!
A1. My students participate in literature circles. One of their favorite jobs is the “visualizer.” This job is to describe an event from the novel in detail. Then sketch a quick illustration of what they visualized. #MasteryChat
Q6- Goal setting time! Think about plans you have for upcoming learning opportunities with your students. How can you find a place to fit in some of these visual thinking strategies? #MasteryChat
A6) I will encourage my learners to share their visualizations with each other. It may help inspire others and help to create even deeper connections. #MasteryChat
A5 #MasteryChat Leave (or take breaks from) PPT to demonstrate you sketching skills on a tablet or whiteboard. If you haven’t, try a tablet with a smart pen with pressure sensitivity. I ❤️ my HP Elite X2 & Endnote
A5 I don't have notes often, but when I do, it depends on the student base. One class (inclusion) may do fill-in notes, and another class may just write what they feel is important to remember. By 8th grade I expect them to be able to identify what they should write. #MasteryChat

A6: In teaching the Holocaust, I begin with 10 images that I slowly show with somber music playing lightly knowing that emotions are the gatekeepers of curiosity. It creates a hunger to know! #MasteryChat
A6 - these strategies puts the learning in the hands of the students. Allows Ts to take a back seat and reflect on the learning taking place in the classroom. #MasteryChat
I’m just now joiningQ4-
I am currently using visual clips with my reading group to teach Cause and Effect. They are great learning tools and an easy hook to incorporate #MasteryChat
A6 I try to fit visuals in often. They help all of my learners grow and see the bigger picture. I do need to make sure I'm giving them the time to know it's okay to use and create their own visuals. #masterychat
A5: Big fan of Cornell Note-Taking Method w/ my 3rd graders. They pick up quickly to the visual format, draw it out easily, & can use words, pics, charts graphs in note section when researching or collecting data. #MasteryChat
A6 working on a cross curricular ecosystems project right now. Looking forward to using some of these ideas to help students generate and communicate their ideas. I need to look through more of these tweets and catch things I've missed! #masterychat
A6: Goal setting time! Incorporate learning from tonight's #MasteryChat. Start color coding and decorating like @Toups_J & @ArdellaQuest. Start teaching more note taking methods like @LevineWrites.
A3 #MasteryChat#edtech related I LOVE @glogster (interactive graphic poster w/S blogging too) & @StoryboardThat (super fun comic/cartoon & and @Flipgrid for all types of creative videos (or iMovie and green screen too). All 3 kids love! Engaging! I also like anchor charts.

A5. I think it’s important to model note taking in order to teach summarizing and paraphrasing. I have my students highlight important words, write synonyms above specific words, and rearrange text to make their own meaning of quotes. #MasteryChat

A3: learned about ✅https://t.co/knbuL7T2GO today from @ramusallam. Take the answers from Ss, word cloud now, compare & contrast, ask more questions #masterychat compare 2 famous speeches, which words help you synthesize it💥
I currently don't have a picture on my phone! One we did was ranking Teddy Roosevelt's best qualities. Each group had 6 readings. Created a ranking poster. Then joined another group and created a new poster. Grew until we did a whole class poster. Intro hype video. #MasteryChat

I'd like to make a card deck with techniques. That way, I can give students the option to flick it through and select the technique. I want to give them more ownership and have them think about which are more effective in different situations. #masterychat

A6; if your teaching to all students you better plan to have visual aides or portions to your lesson to meet them where they are at and give them the opportunity to be successful based on their preferred learning style.
#MasteryChat
A6: One idea I recently had was having my Ss write a narrative in the style of a comic. I've done this before, but we are reading "Flora and Ulysses" by Kate Dicamillo, which has lots of comic elements in it. #MasteryChathttps://t.co/O7pORwfpwW
A6: Simply INCLUDE Visual Thinking Strategies as part of the regular plan. Maybe REPLACE something else with them. INTEGRATE them more into student assignments AND assessments. SHOW students what they can do with visual thinking (provide models & examples). #masterychat
Sometimes I have students add onto notes from a previous day by having them attempt to explain what they mean and see where there are gaps. #MasteryChat

Thanks - have spent many years planning with teachers in their teams in leadership roles in different schools - I always start with questions to promote collective thinking about our design for the learning with children at the heart of all we do 💗#MasteryChat
A6: Excited to start @TaraMartinEDU's amazing #BookSnaps brain genius idea this semester using @Seesaw and our book study of the beautifully visual text "The Invention of Hugo Cabret"! #MasteryChat
