#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff. #MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern. The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.

      A1: It makes me think of an awesome strategy that one of our 4th grade teachers use - making a “mind movie” - where you take a written passage/story and then try to ‘see’ the action mentally. Greatly aids comprehension! #masterychat

    Yes! One thing I saw too, when my school taught sketchnoting last year, was that students who spoke languages other than English as their 1st found visual thinking/note-taking great because if they didn't know the words, they could just draw their thinking! #masterychat

    A3 When working with vocabulary, I often use the Frayer model which requires students draw a picture to represent the word. With tech, I have them create a slideshow where they define the word, use it in a sentence, and find an image that matches their context. #masterychat

    A3: As a teacher and principal, I've seen all the above. I encourage my teachers to do whatever they to bring the lesson "alive"...we use a program called Artful Reading...it's an awesome way to tie literacy and the arts into curriculum. #masterychat

    A3: Visual strategies that I have tried are: sketchnoting, chalk talk, graffiti wall, & sketch to stretch. When I tried them, people surprised me. Verbal peeps used lots of words, sentences, tons of labels, but the true VSLs were able to shine! #masterychat

    A3. I have been out of the classroom for a while but i used picture diagrams to help students remember the elements/sequence of stories we read. (They wrote them as well) They also used diagrams to organize their writing. I hope this counts. #MasteryChat

    A3 I did a draw and label with staff that tied concepts into a cohesive image (a tree) that was a metaphor for the purpose of the work. When the image became clear they loved it. Also, digitally infographics have been fun. #masterychat

    I know teachers who had their Ss do sketchnotes on a math concept they were learning. Then they connected with another similar grade class and the Ss had to USE their sketchnotes to explain and teach the concept. It was a great way to show their learning/follow-up! #masterychat

    A3-I try to change our work medium regularly. One day we may use our notebooks, the next our white bds, a sticky note. We also change up our writing utencils. This helps them pull up the mental image & ideas. Plus we can find that info quick when it looks different #masterychat

    Q4: Differentiating for kindergarten and first grade requires the use of more visuals. For example, the checklists they use for editing provide pictures so that students can take more ownership of the revision process. #masterychat

    A3: Another visual we have started using lately is bar diagrams/models to help students set up math problems. We talk about the parts and the whole. I think it helps students process the information and determine which operation to complete. #MasteryChat

    A5 I don't start with notetaking. Instead, I introduce a problem scenario and then students use their notebooks to organize their work process to figure out their solution or prove their answer. Sometimes I suggest a format (table, diagram, etc.). Other times, not. #masterychat

    A5 In math I use the #thinkingclassroom strategy, "write a note to your later, dumber self". I get students to take pictures of their worked problems and then annote them with notes that will help them later. #masterychat

    A5. I think it’s important to model note taking in order to teach summarizing and paraphrasing. I have my students highlight important words, write synonyms above specific words, and rearrange text to make their own meaning of quotes. #MasteryChat

    A6: Simply INCLUDE Visual Thinking Strategies as part of the regular plan. Maybe REPLACE something else with them. INTEGRATE them more into student assignments AND assessments. SHOW students what they can do with visual thinking (provide models & examples). #masterychat
