Q1: Engagement and building relationships are obvious priorities, but when that doesn’t work, what are ways we can reach the students who refuse to be active participants in their learning? #TnEdChat
Use student interests to your advantage. Introducing argument writing to my students last year was like pulling teeth, but debating about whether Fortnite is simply an amusement or a full blown addiction was a different story. #TnEdChat

A1: I love connecting those hard to reach Ss with fellow Ts who could act as a support or someone from the community. #EveryoneNeedsACheerleader!
#Tnedchat
A1: I'm not an Anime fan, but last year (just to connect with a student) I watched a few series. He began doing much better in class because in the halls we'd talk about Anime #TnEdChat
A1: It's what we do with that relationship that matters, and ask more questions, then listen, chances are they are communicating something. Don't be afraid to ask a colleague who might have a different perspective/strength/idea. #TnEdChat
Q1: Engagement and building relationships are obvious priorities, but when that doesn’t work, what are ways we can reach the students who refuse to be active participants in their learning? #TnEdChat
A1: Pay attention and see what it is that they are interested in and try to include it in the activities, create situations where peers encourage them, not just adults #goodpeerpressure#tnedchat
A1b: I've been teaching trig to some reluctant learners when a S pulled this out of his pocket and asked how to find the meas he needs to make it - now the whole class is making it together #gorillaPBL#tnedchat
A1: Possibly give them something to work towards? I have found that to be helpful with some of my AU or EC students. Not a fan of labels but just giving context to some of my students #tnedchat

A2: Dealing w/disruptive Ss varies by student. I don't think one way is always the right one. I think it is important for Ss to reflect on their choices. Sometimes ignoring behavior works
#tnedchat
A2: I think the deeper thing to address is why is the learner refusing the work? Is this because it is to hard and it is above there ZPD? What standards maybe do they need more support in? #TnEdChat
A2: I always take the student aside and have a talk. Usually he comes back and gets back on task. If he doesn’t, I just pray he sits quietly and gets something out of the lesson without disrupting those who want to learn. #TnEdChat
A1) I hang out and talk with those kiddos during recess or lunch. The other day I was playing horse with a kiddo on the basketball court, and I learned so much from him! #TnEdChat
Hi everyone! Sorry for being late! Was moderating a local Spanish monthly meetup! I’m Jaime, Spanish teacher in Chattanooga, advocate for language learning in all future ready programs. #Tnedchat

We have seen from our learners that when you hit them for what they are ready for the behavior goes down. Still need relevant and engaging activities for them. #TnEdChat
A2: ASK!! LISTEN!!!!!!! Ask the S what's up, what I can do to make it better/easier/more entertaining/whatever .. compromise too - something is better than nothing and can turn into more #tnedchat
A2: I think simply taking those students to the side and being open to listen to them goes a long way. A lot of times refusal stems from something going on beyond our 4 walls. We may be the 1st ones willing to offer a listening ear.
#TnEdChat
A2: Quietly and with dignity. I have a few that have made a discreet system. They know if they're disruptive/not on task they receive a "mark". When I get a second I will conference w/them quietly & see what the deal is. Sometimes its they are lazy, or don't understand #tnedchat

A2: This is not a one size fits all response, but I try leaning into it. If a S is showboating, I give them a min of air time. Or I try a task/request hidden in a joke. "Those are sweet dance moves, will you dance yourself over to the printer to grab____for me please?" #tnedchat
TYTY - but let's make sure the vehicle doesn't roll over before we all start patting Heather on the back 😬 FYI it's a truck part. #hopeitworks#PBL#tnedchat

We have found it is about building family. We have 94 learners that are ages 7-11 year olds in our cohort. No longer a focus on grade levels. This focus has helped reduce behaviors as well. #tnedchat
Q3: How do you focus on the needs of a student who shows no interest in learning without ignoring the needs of the other students in the classroom? #TnEdChat
A2) I have a safe area in my room! It is located in my reading center. There is also a timer in that area. The timer is set for two minutes. After the kiddo calms down, he or she goes back to work. #TnEdChat
A3: @julie_koster is bringing it in HARD tonight!
When I used to have a reluctant learner(s), I would def change up the way i teach. I would teach in centers so I could meet the needs of all Ss more effectively
#tnedchat#INeedASilverBullet
Q3: How do you focus on the needs of a student who shows no interest in learning without ignoring the needs of the other students in the classroom? #TnEdChat
A3: one thing we love to do in the first 10-15 days is focus on the 16Habits of Mind. We also find our learners interest and then try to bring those interest into our days. We just finished our learner interest day last week. #tnedchat
A1: I need to work on being consistent bc I rarely have this prob. When I do,it’s in 3s. I seem to miss 1 no matter what. Like my 🐶,I don’t like being ignored-I’ll herd you to the rest by ‘running circles’ around you, wearing down your resistance & you join the group. #TnedChat
A3 not every tool will work for every student in your classroom. Give students options. If they don’t engage with one, have them choose another #TnedChat

Hey guys! Brian from HORNBEAK!
A3: Ask them what their interests/motivations are? Find some common ground. Be flexible and open to different ways of accomplishing the same result.

A2: I give them a choice. They can join in & be a part & do the work now. Or they can do it later-on their time. At the HS level, they don’t like calls home. If I have to get to that point of given them that ultimatum, I’m calling home w/ S present so they can explain.#TnedChat
A4 I use stations and with this, different ways to learn and practice and collaborate, has definitely helped. Also mixing up strategies and tools, let Ss create, more choices #tnedchat
A3) I focus on the others before I move to the ones who show no interest... I even use class "spies" to find ways to pull them in to the rest of the group. #TnEdChat
A4: Activities that allow students to move around the room are always a hit with my kiddos. A small modification to the way we might normally run an activity can make a world of a difference.
#tnedchat
A4: Talking to them outside of class or about personal interests. Relationships go a LONG way. Plenty of kids work for me wand not for others because I talk to them.
#TnEdChat
Positive calls about the kid coming in with both shoes on or helping another kid helps before . making that call about no work. Be truthful and authentic #TnEdChat
A4: Let them use tools & build skills that can actually be used outside/after high school, like CAD drawing in @tinkercad (where my Ss are building a prototype of the aforementioned truck part) #MoneyTalks 🤑🤑🤑 #tnedchat
A4: It starts with getting the learners rethinking school. Get them to see the learning journey they are on. Have clear goals and paths for learners. @lpijanowski has a great book #AODL that lays out ways to get to deeper learning using the @RigorRelevance framework! #tnedchat
A4: Try to frame ways to let them shine. Reluctant doesn't mean behavior issue, just that you need a new way to bring them in.
Humor works, too!
#TnEdChat
A3: A wise woman once told me that it’s never about what it’s really about. If there is absolutely no interest in learning on a daily basis, what is going on in this student’s life causing the problem? In case you were wondering, that wise woman is my mom. #TnEdChat
A3: when I used Centers, it was much easier to work on these hard to crack nuggets. Now, I have to do creative maneuvers w/ team games (quizlet live or kahoot) to use peer pressure to ‘learn’ or atleast passively learn through bare participation. #tnedchat
Q5: Each student is different, but every year there is at least one reluctant learner in your classroom. The level of reluctance may vary, but it’s there nonetheless. How do you ignite a passion for learning through literacies including technology and media? #TnEdChat
A4: Gamification. Ss get a time at the beginning of class to use their earned points, feel the freedom to move at their own pace, know that they get 1:1 time to ask questions and work thru difficult tasks, know the routine, but still have creative freedom. #tnedchat
A4: Spanish is the perfect class to see RLs-in our current political climate, it’s ok to express racist/uneducated thoughts on learning languages/cultures. But for some reason,I have a knack at convincing naysayers, or those with extreme anxiety that it’s doable & FUN. #Tnedchat
A4.1: It helps that I’m honest about my experience, my expectation, and that I use food as much as possible to help them relax and have fun. Food is universal. #Tnedchat
A5 find a common ground that intrigues those students, because you care it builds a trust that makes you on their side. Find a topic or tool that clicks with that student and let them go to show what they are capable of- they often just need trusted #TnedChat

A5: Technology can be a tool to help reluctant learners. I always loved sharing certain books w/students and being able to discuss with fidelity w/Ss. @OverDriveEd has great audio and ebooks. @DiscoveryEd has a ton of awesome audio books
#tnedchat#lovebooks
A5: Allowing students to create responses with @AdobeSpark apps and @canva, generating lists of interests with @padlet and connecting with the global community, delivering instruction with curated @YouTube playlists, designing @GetKahoot and @quizlet to use in class. #tnedchat

In all seriousness I wore this when we read Holes by Louis Sachar!! We can read about juvy and orange prison garb all day, but I'd rather make it real!
A5: I use music and tv shows...requiring them to find a Spanish speaking show (watch it with subtitles) to watch 1x/Wk at home has them binging shows, while games in class with songs, gets them to explore more songs on YouTube. #Tnedchat
A5: Another lesson I learned from my mom. Tell that kiddo that he/she is “your project” & that it’s your mission to make at least 1 thing he/she learns fun this year! Sometimes identifying the issue in a way that makes him/her see that you care is enough for it to work! #Tnedchat
Q6: What additional advice would you give to assist with helping struggling Ts change the mindshift of reluctant learners that hasn’t been covered in this evening’s chat? #TnEdChat
A5: I tell kids, even ones that I don't have in class anymore, to bring me their successes so I can celebrate with them. True engagement doesn't stop when they leave your room.
#TnEdChat
A5 Work on relationships, then also adding in some different activ using tech or no tech, let students create, and sometimes games @gimkit@quizizz or activ @nearpod can be a catalyst, #tnedchat
A6 This was probably shared, but when I used to show up at a bball game, dance recital, birthday party, etc, that really meant something to the student AND parent.
#tnedchat
A6) I go back to the equation Relationship + Passion + Motivation = Success... Build relationships, seek their passions, find their motivation...work on their success. #TnEdChat

A6 don’t give up.
If that student is keeping you up at night then take that next step to create connections. Don’t pass a student in the hallway without saying hi- being the approachable teacher matters #TnEdChat
A6: It isn't always about the content you are teaching, focus on empowering Ss to gain the skills they need (collaboration, communication, maturity etc.). #TnEdChat

Thanks @julie_koster for a thought-provoking chat. Sometimes we try to handle hard-to-reach Ss on our own and end up frustrated and defeated. 'Lean on Me' comes to my mind. #GrowYourPLN#tnedchat

A6: I'd remind that nothing happens overnight. That we are a TEAM in schools and the foundation you lay now will be built on in future years. Keep making those connections, following up on them, and trust that they're listening, it just takes time. #tnedchat
Great job @julie_koster - chats are always better when the moderator leads from their perceived point of need and asking for help. Well done at transparent educating and leading! #Tnedchat
