Hey friends! Amanda, 4th grade teacher in Belgrade. I’m behind in my photo editing so I’m going to attempt to chat while I edit. We’ll see how good my multitasking is 😬 #mtedchat
A1) We have two ears and one mouth! We need to use them appropriately. Ears to sense facts, opinions, and emotions. Mouth to respond with kindness. If someone doesn't know how to speak (w/empathy) we won't progress & if we don't listen no one will listen to us speak. #MTedchat

A1: teaching communication skills is essential because it's what we all do - we can either do it right and create clarity, connection, and understanding, or we can do it wrong, and create discord and division. #MTedchat
A1 In the times we live, it’s easy to only communicate via electronics and tune out actual conversation. We don’t want that to go the way of cursive writing 😜 #MTedchat
I’ve had Ss 2 to 3+ yrs ahead of the class in maybe but delayed in processing word problems. This is an atypical example but I think it is at the core of what we’re discussing. #mtedchat
A2) 1st is a good culture. Be sure kids have think time. Use tools so each kiddo has an opportunity to share and edit their thoughts. Like @Flipgrid@seesaw@padlet#MTedchat
A2. Leave judgement and sarcasm at the door. Value all voices (even the ones which are wrong). This is a skill adults need to learn so we can teach it to our kids. #MTedchat
A1 In K-1 We started each day with sharing circle. In 4-5 we had a daily morning meeting. Both formats let Ss practice listening and speaking with one another. #MTedchat
A2) My instuctional facilitator helped me w/ shared reading lessons w/ meaningful questions like "what does this poem remind you of?" or "what does the title make you think of?" #MTedchat
A2 I go old school and read aloud to my students every day and talk about the book as we go. Sometimes we end up talking so much, I barely get through two pages! #MTedchat
Adults in mandatory PD is by far the hardest place to cultivate a discussion with 100% participation. I think the problem is that word, MANDATORY #MTedchat
A2: to better in-class conversation, I've used @flipgrid (of course), or created a comment thread on Google classroom, then turned those responses into a slide show which I would get students to comment on - very effective! #MTedchat

A2 I LOVED the “invention” (and implementation) of strategies like Think, Write, Pair, Share, where EVERY student was expected to add to the conversation. Effective lessons & conversations MUST engage all, not just those who raise their hands. #MTedchat
A2) My instuctional facilitator helped me w/ shared reading lessons w/ meaningful questions like "what does this poem remind you of?" or "what does the title make you think of?" #MTedchat
A2 Many and varied opportunities and platforms: @flipgrid, GClassroom posts, blogging, @Seesaw, F2F in small groups/ morning meetings, etc. I'm a huge believer in providing back channels for our less vocal Ss. #MTedchat
We finished Wonder and now we are onto Auggie and Me. Super powerful books for conversations about empathy, kindness, and behaviors kids do, but are not proud of...it's real. #MTedchat
A2) It's amazing to watch how having students stand to speak helps students engage - they enjoy the movement. Must teach yielding in convo, sharing airtime, etc. #MTedchat
Agree 💯. We often rush Ss to the verbal response. Love how the tools you mention allow for processing/ think time and editing/ revising of ideas. Our Ss are not 🤖🤖🤖! #MTedchat
In reply to
@StantonShelly, @Flipgrid, @Seesaw, @padlet
I’ve used interview style conversations for assessments before. I pry the informant out of them. Especially struggling students. Use Flipgrid with the prompt ‘What do you think?’ Or ‘What did you learn?’ #mtedchat
A2) Also helps to use digital means so quieter students engage. @padlet and Google Classroom for reflection - some need think time and will participate later. #MTedchat
#MTedchat A2 Bringing in guest speakers, History makers to share their stories with our students. Makes history relevant, engages Ss and leads to discussion.
A2: I’ll stop@in the middle of a math word@problem and ask ‘So what is it that they want fro us?’ ‘What are they trying to make us think about, cuz we can get the answer with a calculator, so...’ #mtedchat
A3: Audience is important. I like how @NVradenburg has helped her teacher have other teachers read S blogs. Like how @bishopkinders uses @Seesaw to share w/Ps. Mission Adult fronts are always great to help vary target. #MTedchat
#MTedchat A2 Here is our story with Mike Eruzione. Very humble and all about the team as he spoke about being the captain of the 1980 Olympic Hockey Team. Honored for him to speak each year to our Students!

Did anybody ever use “Fizz and Martina” in math (back in the day of Mac OS9)? SO POWERFUL for problem solving, but also speaking & listening! #MTedchat
So true! And it gave me a chance to show my human side and talk about the things that are important to me like my family and my hobbies. Building relationships #MTedchat
A3. I think it’s good to constantly find new audiences. We bring groups to the school board to present. Mystery Skype. Class partnerships is great #MTedchat
A3) I think we sometimes forget to teach listening - tracking, eye contact, body position, gestures like nodding, how to disagree w/and build convos, cheer for those that get stuck, and teach persistence to those that struggle. #MTedchat
I will never forget that my 5th grade teacher insisted that everyone in the room turn and look at the person speaking. It was a great way to teach those listening habits! #MTedchat

🙌🏼 👏🏼 📚 Read-aloud and morning meeting tie for my fave times of day. I love it, too, Shelley! Such a great way to connect w Ss, share love of literature, model fluent reading and thinking aloud abt plot, characters... #MTedchat
A3: one of our teachers runs a blog for his students that opens up their writing to a real audience of thousands every month from dozens of countries. #MTedchat
Agree @kellyrexine Love to bring kids to the audience as much as bringing audience to kids. Board meetings, businesses, local groups - organization and communication w/them to involve them is key. #MTedchat

Coolest thing ever! https://t.co/ALzOmIx8kU
Short stories, current events, etc. Kids listen to the NPR stories and answer questions. We can DM more later. You have to pick appropriate stories etc. But love it! #MTedchat
a3. Invite the community. Stop at the local coffee shop and ask if anyone would be willing to come to school at 10:35 and listen to a student present/speak/talk. #MTedchat
Hello everyone! Crista Anderson, Dixon school principal. Just had the most exciting conversation with a bunch of like minded educators. Now ready to jump in with some of my other favorites ;-) @denisejuneau#mtedchat
A3 Audience is VERY important to practicing speaking & listening b/c it provides relevance! Who wants to talk to an empty room? Even Netflix stops to make sure someone is watching after awhile! #MTedchat

A1: Speaking and listening are critical in learning. We need to engage in authentic experiences… We learn together more effectively when we utilize strong communication skills. In today’s world, these skills expand our network beyond local community. CONNECT #mtedchat
A2: I truly appreciate no-hands-up… Cold call strategy. The element of surprise, and authentic dialogue… Raises expectations for all. Every student needs to have opportunity to respond through speaking and writing. Socratic seminar is another favorite. #mtedchat
A4) 300 hours of video are loaded to YouTube every minute! Why would I be the sole provider of information when there is so much out there? Why make kids learn only in an auditory way when there are so many options? #MTedchat
A4: Because there is so much more out there than just the bubble we teach in. Students need to be ready for that and won't get there listening to one voice. #MTedchat Honorary MT teacher popping in :)
A3 Authentic audiences and teaching Ss that audiences vary depending on purpose of task, assignment, etc is impt. Again, I go to tools like @Flipgrid + @Seesaw, where Ss can practice S&L skills. Pecha kucha & Ignite talks! #MTedchat
So cool. I would definitely do this. I used @voicethread with upper elem and Ss and parents loved it. Ss audio record their writing and get audio and text feedback. #MTedchat
A3: Students need opportunity to talk in small groups, as a large group, in front of a group, with a microphone, with a headset, to a live audience, to an individual digitally, by posting comments to an article or blog, & through synchronous & asynchronous workspaces. #mtedchat
A4) We need to acknowledge and honor the voices students have access to. Perpetuating the teacher as sole disseminator of knowledge is a lie. As Ss get older they know this and then the relationship is not built on trust. When that happens, ALL lose. #MTedchat
A4 with so many resources out there the teacher isn’t the one with all the knowledge anymore. Students can find information in so many other places and need to know how to access it and “listen to learn” #MTedchat
A4.2) At the same time, Ss need to learn how to filter information as valid, as well as how it sits with their values/experiences, and then decide what to do with that knowledge. #MTedchat
A4: Teachers can’t compete with all the information. It used to be the teacher, a book or a static set of encyclopedias. I remember growing away a stack of dictionaries. I kept 4 & don’t use them. #mtedchat
A4.2) At the same time, Ss need to learn how to filter information as valid, as well as how it sits with their values/experiences, and then decide what to do with that knowledge. #MTedchat
I completely agree… It’s important to find ways to anchor that conversation… But not make it tedious, journals and worksheets and kill the moment… But recording nuggets is important #mtedchat
A5.2) The big key in questioning techniques is helping kids ask good questions...if they can do that, learning will stay fun & they will look for evidence. #MTedchat
Model it via think aloud strategies, teach questioning strategies of text and others, and guiding constructive debates. Hard to keep personal feelings out, but is a must to just question both sides. Speak it first, hone craft, then write it to continue to build. #MTedchat
A4.2) At the same time, Ss need to learn how to filter information as valid, as well as how it sits with their values/experiences, and then decide what to do with that knowledge. #MTedchat
A5 Questions often spark the best discussions which you could have never planned. I love those organic moments. The questions build upon each other and the conversation goes deeper. #MTedchat
A5 Open-ended questioning stems such as...
What do you notice about...?
What would happen if...?
We use these in math to help Ss justify reasoning and make conjectures. Link ➡️ https://t.co/BxLF5kbULA#MTedchat
A5: Yikes I am still working on this myself, No an exact science yet haha. I have this little flip chart of Blooms with stems that I give the kids to try. #MTedchat
Discussing opposing views in areas where there is no right answer but very different value systems. I something new ask, What if we’re wrong? Disrupting equilibrium. #mtedchat
A5 This is hard for students. We’re constantly working on asking clarifying questions to further our learning. One area where my Ss are getting better with this is number talks. Rather than disagreeing with an answer they’re supposed to ask questions to clarify #MTedchat

A5b) I also model a lot of Qs through DI for reading. Ex: stopping and asking selves "does that makes sense?" They must think about the text 2 answer #MTedchat
A5: Socratic seminar is a huge tool… Can be used at all levels. Also feel it is imp to offer Ss the time to process before they speak (though not always… Cold responses have a place too). Offer wait time, that allows Ss to write/draw their thoughts before sharing. #mtedchat
A5 b) I'm a fan of posting questioning stems around the room. They're helpful for us *and* the Ss. They don't necessarily know how to probe peers constructively without some support. #MTedchat
A6: I am not sure it is my goal to get 100% Some kids just don't want to and I am not sure it is something that I need to push. I pay attention to conversations I will randomly call on kids in no pressure situations #MTedchat
That’s awesome! The Making Number Talks Matter book by @joboaler is my bible. I wish I would have been taught to think about and talk about math in these ways as a kid. I’m gaining such a better understanding of math as an adult from listening to my students talk. #MTedchat
A4: The shift is happening bc we now know T is not expert of all. We have more tools at our reach to gain access to resources & voices to enrich learning. Multimedia can even speed process, & even the playing field for learners who don’t thrive with traditional lecture #mtedchat
A6) I think trying to set the standard by evaluating what students can do rather than what they know - communicated to Ss. It's the skills, not the knowledge - questioning, going deeper, disagreeing & supporting, exploring they why. #MTedchat
A6 I used turn and talk to make sure everyone shared something and everyone heard something. Even assigned partner 1 and partner 2 and provided an order for sharing #MTedchat
A6: Please take some time to learn from, and with, @erik_palmer he offers so many ideas… if you don’t follow him, I highly suggest you do now. #mtedchat Utilize the common core standards in all content areas when assessing speaking and listening (Not ELA alone). #mtedchat
I was similar to Brent. I, myself, am a quiet processor, and I was as a student. I think the key is no pressure situations, as you said. Conferring with Ss and small group discussions/convos with other modes of communication mixed in. #MTedchat
