Welcome to #champforkids! I get to be your moderator for tonight! We will use the Q1/A1 format! Introduce yourself to the family & give us a glimpse into your classroom via gif! Be sure to include the #champforkids hashtag.
Hello! Kaitlyn Ralston here! Liberal KS I teach 2nd grade!typical day is all the shoelaces! 😅 We will get there! But more serious note.. excitement and energized chatter! My kids decided they wanted to run their own election so if you have any ideas! Let me know! #Champforkids
A1: A class with compliant Ss focuses on the RIGHT answer instead of the depth of understanding and application. Ss ask surface level questions and most of the information is disseminated from Ts to Ss. #ChampForKids ❤️🥊❤️🥊
A1: Compliant Ss may look engaged but never empowered. They are often seated in rows carefully following directions. Classes are quiet and factory like.
#Champforkids
A1: Going through the motions. Robotic learning. Doing just enough not to get noticed. Trying to stay off the radar and "escape" at the end of the day. I lived like this, many years in school. #champforkids
A1: All/most students behave, all work on the same assignment and possibly produce the same outcome that looks exactly like the model, only give answers they think the T wants to hear, curiosity is stifled This answer bores me #champforkids
.A1: Compliant kids focus more on pleasing the teacher than learning. They appear to be doing "the right thing", but may not truly be learning. #champforkids
A1~
Just asked my teenage boys this question & this is what they said...
-quiet
~ little to learn in this kind of setting
~ teacher talks on & on
~robotic
~ very little laughter
~ more about T than the Ss
#champforkids
A1: A classroom with mutual respect, measurable learning targets, and consistent reflection...while using restorative practices to address discipline challenges #champforkids
A1- Compliant classroom- Ss need to be coerced to learn. 'I have to do this or else ____'. More concerned with pleasing T than own learning or growth. #champforkids
A1: a class with compliant Ss are usually doing what is asked but only what is asked. Their answers are of what they think we want to hear or the “right answer” instead of their own thinking. #Champforkids
A1: I am going to tell you what a compliant class sounds like...
Me: Close your iPads.
Class: Click.
Me: Open your books to page 52.
Class: Rustles pages.
Me: Discuss question with your neighbor.
Class:
Me: sigh
#champforkids
A.1 I grew up thinking I was awful at art due to my middle school art teacher. She would stand, show the final product, and expect us to replicate it every time. I learned nothing and grew a horrific art mindset. Thank you compliance. #ChampForKids
A2: An engaged class has Ss exploring, inquiring, celebrating mistakes as the opportunity to learn and grow. Ss are driven by the desire to understand over the desire to get the grade! #champforkids ❤️🥊
Q2: Helps if I read the questions correctly... but engaged Ss have high energy levels, positive attitudes, helpers, and engaged other Ss in class activities #champforkids
A1: a room filled with compliant children are like robots. They are doin exactly what they should do. Note: that is not a bad thing. BUT, in a sense it is. They are not finding value in what they are/should be learning. #champforkids
A2: It's loud, noisy, often messy, full of life. Students take ownership of what they are producing. They usually are connecting their skills back to class activities. #champforkids
A2: Engaged students are empowered to collaborate and create. They often have conversations with the T and other Ss. Desks are seldom in rows (if there are any) and the class is dynamic following where the learners takes it.
#champforkids
.A2: Kids are collaborating, participating, active! When you walk into the room, they barely notice you and you inadvertently startle them. :) #champforkids
A2: Engaged Ss sometimes collaborate with others, sometimes work at their desks but many times somewhere else, they produce various outcomes for an assgt, their learning leads to new questions, they're smiling and mostly happy #ChampforKids
A.1 continued. Compliance is an act of respect for rules or guidelines but to allow true thinking we need to let kids formulate, get messy, and grow from it. When we do, life long learning occurs...and confidence. #ChampForKids
A1: it looks like a lot of questions, discussions, and critique. Students who are really compliant are ones who want to be a part of a thriving community. They don’t passively sit in it, they contribute to it! #ChampForKids
A2: Ss are asking & answering questions, they’re active participants in discussions & activities, they are involved because they’re interested #ChampForKids
A1: Compliant has a negative connotation. I told my students that I would rather see an authentic 2 or 1 rubric score from them than an inauthentic 3 or 4. Sometimes, compliant students just get the task “over with” but don’t learn anything. #Champforkids
A2~
~ never a dull moment
~Ss talking, sharing, creating
~Excitement can be felt, heard by all stakeholders ~ Ss, Ts. Support staff
~Risk taking
~Mistake making
~Celebrations of each other
~ Laughter
#champforkids
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
A2: the biggest hint that a class is engaged is whether they stick to assignments, or add to assignments. Engaged kiddos don’t settle for the learning experience in class alone. They go above and beyond to answer new questions that arise. #ChampforKids
A2: Ss are sharing ideas and questioning each other, even the T! They don’t stop at the end of the task. They ask to keep going or learn more about a topic. They don’t rely on the T for the “next step” but make it their own. #Champforkids
A3: The shift is visible when students are questioning the thinking of their peers and explaining their understanding! Engagement is thinking, and digging for understanding! #champforkids ❤️🥊
A3: Let them speak!!! Ask them - feel the energy in the room. Step back and observe the conversations. Watch their eyes. Engagement doesn't lie. #champforkids
A2: When students ask questions and share their own insights that connect to what we are learning, I know they are engaged. Engagement is a commitment, and my engaged learners are committed to learning. They like it, so they put a ring on it. #ChampforKids
A.2. Engagement is kids moving, project based learning, genius hour, and conversations....the real life ones that cause them to pause, think, and keep for later. #ChampForKids
A3: Conversations. We should always be checking the pulse of our classroom through the use of formative assessments and "stop and check" discussions. #champforkids
A3: The biggest thing that changes when students go from compliant to engaged is what they create. No longer is it just copies of examples the teacher shows... it becomes great things the teacher never even thought of!
#champforkids
A3: Ss are asking probing relative questions, their conversations with peers are content related. If we design the learning activity right and plan engaging lessons, then the magic happens. #champforkids.
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
Q3: “the shift” happens when Ss become active participants in the lesson through interest levels, discussions, conversations, student ownership levels, and energy levels #champforkids
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
.A3: Telling the difference can definitely be tricky! I find the best way is to talk to them. You can learn so much about Ss and their learning through discussions. #champforkids
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
A3: a good hint is if you are actively learning from your students. Engaged students further everyone’s knowledge in the room including the teacher. Compliant students listen and follow directions, giving them no chance to teach or show their perspective. #ChampForKids
A3: Engaged Ss ask more questions;compliant Ss take everything at face value Engaged Ss add creative twists to assgts and lesson artifacts reflect the engaged Ss' personalities Engaged Ss usually communicate more with peers #ChampForKids
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
A3 Seeing the difference is in the student responses they are unique when they are engaged, compliant responses are pretty much the same ☹️ #ChampForKids
Q3: The Ss truly want to learn. They aren’t just doing something because their teacher told them they had to. They focus on the learning and not the grade. #champforkids
A3: You can feel a different energy in an engaged classroom. The compliant classroom is quiet and low energy. Engaged students are visibly having "aha moments" and are discussing with their peers. You can hear them extending past the question posed. #champforkids
A2: Until they’ve had a lot of practice and direction, you can expect that they will talk over one another! They will get excited about learning, notice when their learning overlaps life and make sure that you know it, too. #champforkids
A3: The first step is to genuinely get to know our students. The effort they put in and the outcome they create is what tells me they are engaged. If I see progress and genuine desire to improve, I know they are not just compliant. #Champforkids
Thanks! I'm a grad student at Iowa State taking a Teaching Literature class. I'll mostly be observing since I'm not quite teaching (yet!), but might occasionally pop in with some observations/memories from school! #isuenged#champforkids
A3: Engaged Ss are active participants that are choosing to do rather than doing because they are told. Engaged Ss are willing participants because they want to be not because they feel like they have to be. #champforkids
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
Q3: Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between compliance and engagement. How can we know that we have shifted students from compliant to engaged? #champforkids
A3~
~excited about learning; asks ?s w/out T prompting, takes risks & can defend why they did so & can connect it to topic of learning & inspires peers to get involved sometimes by sheer excitement in explorations,& continuously looks for multiple ways to solveprob
#ChampforKids
A3 Engagement just looks 👀👀 right
Students ask questions seek you out for assistance ask each other for opinions and actually produce and create something in the end #champforkids
A.3 If you build a strong class culture, an understanding that we are a learning family, and model what is consistently expected students can be given freedom in the classroom...maturity is strengthened ....and they move on to the next year empowered. #ChampforKids
Ss will always be engaged when the verb is create, simulate, build, etc. Chamge the verb in your learning plans and watch the level of engagement change!!! #champforkids
A3: The biggest thing that changes when students go from compliant to engaged is what they create. No longer is it just copies of examples the teacher shows... it becomes great things the teacher never even thought of!
#champforkids
A4: Compliance may well be valued in the areas of rules, policies, and things along those lines. With relationships built this should lessen as well.
#champforkids
A2: Engaged: Lots of interaction, discussion, partner talk, partner and/or small group work, kids not even noticing the time on the clock, laughter, joyfulness, and excitement in the air, kids upset when it’s time to move on, movement, ideas flowing, etc. #champforkids
A2: Engaged students have a sound of on task conversations and helping others be on task or support with the assigned task. Engaged students don't reach a level of loudness where it's hard to hear partners. #champforkids
A4: When it comes to procedural items and areas considering order, yes, compliance is key. I'm not going to scream "FIRE" in the middle of a crowded theater. That's madness. I need to comply with social norms. Same goes for the classroom. #champforkids
A3: in an engaged classroom, you hear the conversations extend beyond the lessons as they connect their learning to their lives. Also, students are proud of their work. #champforkids
It is so important we create opportunities for exploration in a society where more and more things are given so quick. Students need to be able to plan, think, and wait. Waiting for results and changing outcomes, these are the peeps I want as future leaders. #ChampforKids
A4 Classrooms must be compliant before they are engaging. We have to set the expectations. It’s like a pole vault...we keep raising the bar and watch as Ss engage and exceed our expectations every time! #ChampforKids
A4 I'm not sure. I think compliance just has a negative connotation. Sometimes our kids have to be compliant - we have to tell them what to do. And sometimes not... #champforkids
A2 A room full of engaged students can be serious and focused, can be quiet and calm, or it could be organized chaos Each student is different and each level of engagement is different #champforkids
A4- Compliance with our class routines/procedures is what allows for engagement. We need to be able to converse and listen respectfully, question each other's thinking, and transition quickly so we can maximize our time together. It plays a part. #champforkids
A4: There never should be. Even if you are teaching compliance (like how to act in a job interview) students should still be engaged, questioning, and critiquing the content. #ChampforKids
A4: I think compliance is appropriate when setting rules and expectations. I also think it’s appropriate for watching and listening to a presentation. But when it comes to true learning, compliance can be the killer of thoughtful, inspiring, and creative ideas.#champforkids
A3: Reading the other answers, I'm realizing that I was likely a more "compliant" rather than "engaged" kid in school. I was lucky that I had teachers who challenged me & my peers to go beyond the requirements, so maybe I was able to pass as engaged. #champforkids#isuenged
.A4: Yes, in some situations there are - such as procedural drills. The high levels of learning can't happen if the kids don't have norms set and understand how to communicate with each other. #ChampForKids
My favorite days are when I'm teaching history...immigration...slavery...and the questions flood out of them looking for more information. When I tell them to go find it you can feel the excitement and the discussions are powerful. #champforkids
A4: Compliance is valued over engagement when safety is an issue. . .If someone could get hurt then yes, compliance is desired. When we’re talking about creating life long learners, I want engaged Ss who feel empowered to face & overcome any obstacles they encounter #champforkids
Q4: A fire drill 🤷🏻♂️... I struggle with this b/c I want Ss to be engaged during the lesson, but so many factors affect Ss engagement levels and I don’t want miss opportunities to engage any Ss #ChampforKids
It does have negative connotation but sometimes, we need them to be well-behaved and following procedure. To quickly move through the lunch line, I need Ss compliant and not necessarily engaged 😍 #champforkids
A4: I need compliance during state testing, safety drills, hallway/restroom transitions, etc. The times they should be orderly and compliant they will be. When they're learning I want them active #ChampForKids
A4: Compliance is necessary for safety reasons and for respecting each other. Compliance is the structure but engagement is the fun working within that structure. #champforkids
A3: I find the easiest way to tell the difference is the looks on their faces and the tone of conversations. When conversations are still going when I want to transition, I know they're engaged versus transitioning due to hearing silence in the room. #champforkids
A5: Taking time to ask questions and listen to student's responses. If I receive responses that point toward compliance, I need to follow up and ask how we can make adjustments and increase buy-in. #champforkids
A3: Thinking of a particular classroom... from desks in rows to desks w/partner, less teacher to whole class discussion & more student to student talk, students not coming up to teacher for reassurance or answer... instead students looking to each other. #champforkids
.I will definitely be opening a dialogue with my teachers about compliance vs. engagement during planning! I'll also continue to talk to kids every time I go into classrooms. #champforkids
A4: I need compliance during state testing, safety drills, hallway/restroom transitions, etc. The times they should be orderly and compliant they will be. When they're learning I want them active #ChampForKids
Call to Action - We want Ss to come to school each day engaged and learning from one another! Times are changing and also the way Ss learn. We must change with the times if we are going to continue to make a difference! #ChampforKids
Thank you for joining us tonight in #champforkids! Be sure to join us next week, Oct 2 at 8 pm EST, as @MrsAsztalos brings the heat with fostering a growth mindset! It's going to be epic, so don't miss out!
A4: Yes! In some instances that determine safety of the students, they have to just obey. Period. BUT, it is important to build a relationship that lets kids know there is always a WHY to what you are asking. That way, they know that there *must* be a reason. #champforkids
CTA: I actually had a seminar today on Sustainable Agriculture that talked about discourses (looking at student/instructor discourses as an example before talking about agricultural discourses)... #champforkids#isuenged
I think we also need to ask teachers their reason for teaching again... I think the purpose of making a difference gets lost in the shuffle of all the rest. To be a #champforkids, we need to go back to our own WHYs.
CTA: by having my kiddos grab control! They need & should have #voice#choice#empowerment lots of fun active learning and an abundance of laughter #champforkids
CTA (cont.): ...and I thought examining the norms was an interesting exercise that got me thinking about other classes. Maybe doing something similar with students at the start of a session would be something to get them engaged? #champforkids#isuenged
CTA. I am excited to take them outside to start digging up our back field gathering soil samples to compare to what we have in our kit. They are excited to start building their digital portfolios. We are setting up for our first global project with their families. #ChampforKids
CTA: By being fully present and engaged myself! If I’m not enjoying myself, and if I know that 8-year-old me wouldn’t be enjoying myself, then I know that I’m not doing the best I can. #champforkids
Yes! Even better than examining is having your Ss create them! Always my first club meeting with Ss, not matter what! And we readdress them at the beginning of every subsequent meeting. SEE you do have valuable input!!! 😍😍 #champforkids
CTA: I will give my students voice and choice. I will also treat them with kindness and compassion, lending them an ear when they need one. #champforkids
I wonder how much of the "compliance" mindset comes from the emphasis on standardized testing. I did VERY well on standardized tests, but did that make me a more critical thinker and engaged learner? Hmm 🤔 #champforkids#isuenged
CtA Give more small group activities that will get them talking. Giving them some time to explore their wonder Qs. Having them be the problem solvers And giving more voice and choice #Champforkids
A4:I think this is too often the case because of different teaching styles Ts should be able2 identify that they're Ss aren't interested (most times) when they are compliant I think Ss should always be engaged especially for my Ss w/ special needs Engagement is key!#champforkids
Our kids come from everywhere! So we first assign them a suitcase they design with their families about where they come from:pics, flags, facts, and a writing piece about the country. Then, we connect with my family overseas classroom to classroom. #champforkids
I introduced sketchnoting to 4th & 5th graders this week and it was amazing to hear their collaboration & discussion, they were definitely engaged! #ChampForKids
I wonder if the compliance mindset can be "hacked" in a way to get students to be engaged. If students are trained to follow the rules, how can they undo that training? (I suppose that's at the heart of the chat that just happened, so... 😊) #champforkids#isuenged
Im a little late to the party because of other plans but now I'm here! Rebecca from NC. 2nd grade teacher! Mostly observing and getting great ideas tonight #champforkids
A2: We need to be a #champforkids, every one of them. Be their support, guidance, and biggest fan. Believe so much, they too believe greatness can be had... dreams come true.
#fcpslearn
Oh yeah! Creating classroom norms is awesome. The memory of doing this that sticks out the most in my mind was actually creating the ground rules for the floor I lived on in my freshman dorm at college. 😅 #champforkids#isuenged
I’ve heard about it before, but this summer while participating in the #hivesummit I had the opportunity to listen to @HeckAwesome share how she introduces it to her Ss and knew then that I wanted to share with my kiddos this year #ChampForKids
CTA: Check in as a whole group, ask for feedback during & after a lesson. "What went well, what could've made this better?" I appreciate S feedback to help gage future discussions/lessons. #champforkids
