Welcome to chat today! Our moderator is
Good morning Marcie from New Orleans Thank you for moderating!
Good morning from Nashville. Bright, chilly day here. Two snow days this week made for a choppy ride.
Our topic today is Students and Social Media Use - Get ready to discuss and share your best resources!
Good morning everyone from chilly, windy northern Saskatchewan
Good morning from Peabody, MA
Morning, all! Cold- Feeling like Siberia, not South Orange, NJ. this morning.
Good morning from sunny again California! I think it's already spring judging from my allergies!
Q1: How can we have internet foreigners teach internet natives?
Happy Saturday - so glad you are here today!
the person who posed the questions, Fr. Antonio spadaro was a great choice to edit it. Very kind priest.
Going to Rome this summer I will have to pick up one there.
Hello! I am an education student at Franciscan and am excited to learn from this education chat!
A1 when the natives help the foreigners with the tech, then the focus can be on the content
Terrific, Christine! I can't wait to hear what you have planned
Going there in two weeks, already been asked by a few colleagues to grab copies. preview looked good
Welcome ... this is a great place to learn and share ideas
A1:Positively, net foreigners can help natives see when to take a tech break and natives can show foreigners the benefits
haha yes - very appropriate : )
A1: I think it's definitely a learning along side, learning from and with the "natives"
Thanks for joining us today
A1: (pt 2) It's about mutual respect for each others perspective
A1 I always have my students work in groups-they learn better this way.
A1 Foreigners assimilate/learn Internet skills and can help students be responsible users with their teaching skills
Welcome! Come back often and bring your classmates!
cold in the Midwest too. Temp is 11 and windchill is 0. Supposed to be 50 on Monday though!
"Catholic schools outperformed their public-school peers by.. full grade level after adjusting..." https://t.co/uRaddcmVrI
Coleman reported that students in Catholic schools learned more and had higher grad. rates than public school peers. https://t.co/hGjcigowqY
A1 There is much newness in the web, each day. I feel there is learning in it for all - native or 'foreigner'.
I think having Ss see Ts not be experts at something empowers the Ss to take the lead or see that you can't know everything
And Ts need to be open to Ss leadership!
Internet foreigners provide a lot of great perspective- ideas need to be and should be welcomed from both sides.
. Yes! So much power in letting Ss lead.
Need to have basic expectations of charity and kindness for this to really work. Sharing. All in together.
Great point but should teachers be in the space or just aware?
Yes! They need to chance to grow these abilities, no matter the grade!
They can also share their resources and excitement
A1 The foreigners need to do their homework. We have a lot to learn, and we should learn!
Agreed! That mutual respect is essential
They definitely provide a sense of balance, especially on SM when things can get out of hand
There is much newness in the web, each day. I feel there is learning in it for all - native or 'foreigner'.
Ive had some silly requests from Ss to add me to their snapchat or instagram- great area where foreigners help.
Teachers should never be afraid of learning from their students
Hello Mary, Melva - thanks for joining today's discussion
so important to help kids understand purpose and responsible use of SM
agreed. Social Media is changing each day and the people using it are learning new things everyday.
Good morning from freezing Baltimore ❄️❄️⛄️
Foreigners help to reintroduce the idea of "boundaries" which I think can get thrown by the wayside
A1 - Using every day examples from the media, students lives can be great sources for discussion by students
We should never be afraid of learning from anyone ... so important to continue to learn ourselves
Agreed! Even when it is humbling...;)
A1. The speed of innovation requires collaboration to share to learn what is on the SM landscape https://t.co/q39TUpWfdc
Ss can get such unique perspective from foreigners on SM. They teach Ss to ask "why?"
exactly- it was an innocent request made w/ little insight. https://t.co/VHy6TzEwhU
https://t.co/HBk1EYSmwM
A1: I can't be connected with amazing teachers if others are without you! I wish more teachers would see the benefits of twitter!
My job allows us to have these discussions ... they are always interesting
many educators are aware & using some form- learning 2use Socmedia professionally can b transformative
Its become a time honored tradition at several schools Ive seen- day after graduation is FB Day.
Even the need to explain what the tool is to a foreigner is a great teaching tool
That is a new one for me!
:) My HS T friends deal with this. I rarely do as an elem. T.
Teaching is learning. one of the best ways for kids to share knowledge.
I think it starts back with those basic lessons on kindness and charity
Ss then also feel valued in their community.
A1 from our diggicit wkshop this week: dont underestimate the influence T have with ur stu.
Discussions, examples, demonstrating it by own use
Modeling, demonstrations, discussions.
Yes! I can teach SM use in the light of our faith
RT A1 from our diggicit wkshop this week: dont underestimate the influence T have with ur stu.
One of reasons I like schoology or edmodo is the benefit of showing students a simpler, controlled version of Social media.
Need positive, intelligent, respectful uses of social media examples
Twitter blocked :( I have a passthrough so I show them my pro account
Yes - Highlight values! RT I can teach SM use in light of our faith
I think, esp. w older Ss that we also need to talk about the negative examples and really discuss the impact
I was just talking about that this week.
It's soft skills - respect, kindness, compassion - they can learn there and apply to personal SM use
I know I did this in HS- google teachers and find info- students now would find my twitter (here)
Yes! I want to use Google Classroom for this. Blackboard is too awkward.
Good place to learn, but they also need larger world - mistakes will be made must learn from them
It's so hard to find a balance. Responsible use is now a critical life skill!
social media is blocked at my HS so students are not learning how to use SM properly
YES! Some fast, bad choices can have major lasting impacts
Completely agree- can't underestimate values.
Late to the fun this morning but catching up
If you treat it like a dirty word...It becomes a breeding ground for negativity
I have a major issue with this - same at my arch. How will they learn?
Blackboard is getting major upgrade soon- thankfully. should be interesting to see update.
Yes! Many students dont realize that colleges are looking at their SM accounts.
Same skills, virtues we want them to develop for all of life.
topic of discussion - it is blocked, but I can show on my laptop
Agreed. "NO" promotes irresponsible use
Yes mine found my FB account! Had to change privacy settings.
Also a little late, what's today's topic?
Agree! And, even younger Ss need age appropriate discussion-many negative examples out there-need more positive
Yes. It's just another way we can equip Ss for life, in all aspects.
I like that classroom and school accounts model how to use it responsibly, esp when it is also talked about
Hate that we make it hard to educate.
Q2: How do we keep up with the latest social apps and sites students are using?
Agreed! Can start with Schoology/Edmodo/Classroom and expand out from there! It's possible!
I understand the root- end SM usage at school- misguided approach.
And we need to close the loop and make sure they connect SM w/the rest of experience. Continuity
How can we make SM part of the day so that it doesnt have to end?
A2: I think that's exactly how natives can help foreigners - keeping Ts up to date!
A2: Conversations with students often leads to what’s new
how is this truly preparing our Ss? teach responsible use
is now trending in USA, ranking 45
A2: for me it's mostly just talking to them about it. What are you using! What should I be using?...open dialogue and trust
A2 Following blogs/twitter accounts of innovative students/teachers/tech leaders and listening to tech savvy students/adults
A2: my and my middle school students. Modeling responsible use is so important. Love that has snapchat
A2- I try to learn as much as I can from discussion- usually have adult friends who use it to begin with- doing research,
being able 2fail safely in control environment & learn from it-essential & educational
A2 we share back and forth what we are using. I learn from my PLN about new things too
A2 Keep up with the latest student used by keeping the lines of communication open. Ask them!
I set up a Twitter account for school library that I use with
A2- and also students will inevitably have conversations overheard by me- Did you see on (this app) and open a discussion.
some use SM for HW, HW help, place to ask questions, etc.
MT A2: my , middle school students. Modeling responsible use important. Love that has snapchat
all I can say is Wow: blocking SM in high school?! How will they learn from ?!
I can bc tech director. They are still pretty banned :(
How about exit/entry tickets? Formative assessment? Polls?
A2. I'll be honest- I did an entire group project in HS using Google Docs and FB Skype. SM can do a lot of good...
A2: To be an expert it's imperative to use SM and tech in your everyday life. Model proper use and digital citizenship.
All we see are screenshot from his twitter page
EXACTLY! Understanding how powerful positive, respectful, intelligent message can b/where & how is that learned?
MT A2: To be an expert use SM and tech in your everyday life. Model proper use and digital citizenship.
fight for Google Hangouts turned back on able to watch too much block vs educate
A2 she is a great social media professor in STL Master the Media, about this exact topic. is great
that is how most of my school teachers find out about newer SM students are using such as Periscope
A2 Yes! Using ourselves gives us a real, hands on perspective - one to share w/Ss, Ts, Admins
yet another sample of honoring what they know! I love learning from my students and teachers!
A2: plus having a worldwide PLN at your fingertips is invaluable!
And we are now going strong enough where the block report button becomes useful... good problem to have tho!
Yes. In that case the brother took time to ask his sister how and why of snapchat
LOL! taught my Ss last year - Parents watch them in class now
A2 Model! Be the role model!
Made it for the last half of ! Hello, everyone.
and you can’t model unless you’re using various SM sites yourself.
Hate to leave in the middle of a great but I need to get a start on my day! Cant wait to read the transcripts later!
Loving seeing schools where Ss run the school SM accounts. Boost community, take pride in school, and models positive usage
I just report it in Tweetdeck which also blocks :)
is a great resource I use it constantly.
A2: Having teen-age children helps me keep up with SM. I follow them on whatever they are using!
AND models to Ts/foreigners positive impact
So glad you could join today, Terri
Goal for next year- see how my first school uses social media...and learn from it. contribute (hopefully) to it.
RT A2: Having teen-age children helps me keep up with SM. I follow them on whatever they are using!
A2: I learn the most from my and talking to my students about new apps or things.
May also need to be part of convo on updating approaches. (once you settle in)
Thanks for joining - the archive will be up on later today
But how can teachers keep up with what students are learning before teachers find out themselves?
Student ambassadors attract other students to your campus. SM is just portion.
definitely see the benefits of trying to find different software, demoing it when possible.
. I love We used it regularly for and the visit of to Philadelphia
does the same thing https://t.co/XYflOKOhwH
A2: Having teen-age children helps me keep up with SM. I follow them on whatever they are using!
We may not live in that world anymore.
Q3: How can we make sure students understand that their online presence affects their future?
working in campus min w/ college students is gr8. i use a lot of apps 4 work- snapchat, insta, twitter, periscope, so many.
a3: This is really hard if we're perceived as "foreigner" by "native" - credibility, authority is at issue.
A3. I like to share the story of how I worked w/ another teacher to do mystery skype, started w/ twitter.
A3 use stories from media - show exs of good and bad use - discuss consequences of both
Q3 Unfortunately sometime that involves using the mistakes of others as examples of what not to do.
A3. give them real world examples. Demonstrate how it doesn't go away
Hi Nancy! I too love Periscope and think it is really underutilized
There's also so many news articles that can be used as examples, good and bad, unfortunately.
A3 Use in positive ways: showcase awards, service work, get involved in world issues, raise awarens on social justice issues
A3 Integrating digital citizenship into the curriculum for grades K-12
Q3: Most difficult question of all. So many have what they think are “secret” accounts - don’t realize no such thing online
good point Don - kids know who they will believe on this topic
A3: Also involving parents. Ss live what they see modeled for them - in and out of school
At edcamp Iowa, getting ready to learn.
even we aren't the first to use it, we can be first to model proper use.
YES, I use that with my primary students. Good stuff!
I use an article from the NY Times called They loved your GPA then they saw your tweets
The #1 wish I have for HS and College Students. There is no such thing as private. https://t.co/uMawgSRvoJ
Q3: Most difficult question of all. So many have what they think are “secret” accounts - don’t realize no such thing online
A3: Real life examples, good and bad, from close to home so they can see consequences happen where they live too.
Plus, it wraps around and colors our teaching in general.
story of lady who made racist tweet and fired b4 got off airplane - we discuss that one
A3: I think we just have to keep talking and sharing and hoping that the K -> 12 conversations stick.
Another important is safety. Our area has seen teachers take advantage of students online, and end up in jail.
going to steal that-had read the article but forgotten about it a little.
Know about what stuff your friend are using and tell them about what stuff you are trying ... https://t.co/OikhHMN9ot
We should teach the parents because they are always out of the blue with most of the SM today
parents also need education ... many no clue about these new topic
ABSOLUTELY! I couldn't agree more.
my daughter was bullied on social and had to learn to step away from it and learn to "self value"
A3: Have them Google themselves. Can be a real eye opener. Then Google a 20-something & see their teen yrs are still online
I totally agree. Then a whole Ss culture is a positive influence. Does wonders!
Not always, but often, yes. Some don't know kids have specific accts. https://t.co/9MqkHX2wx2
We should teach the parents because they are always out of the blue with most of the SM today
Love that one! Opens their eyes a bit!
There are many others out there similar to that
I find most often Ps know about SM, but are not positive models of digital citizenship or tech balance
A3: We act out online scenarios in real life games. Example: hand out a photo and ss pass it around and ss have to track it
I will be at Catholic Press Assoc conf in June speaking on ! 😄 thanks Michelle!!
also love idea of digital Tattoo vs footprint bc permanent ... kids get that
oh, that’s a good idea, but you may be stepping into a mess!
I read different HS Sports forums because Im an official- amazing what parents write behind a screen.
that is awful ... glad she had guidance on learning where to place value
Especially in the comments! Everyone, Ss and adults, could use some respectful commenting tips
I use the idea of the footprint because students think it goes away but it really doesnt
done that one w/ my kids. results are shocking to them.
It should be termed "digital tattoo" because it is permanent
I also do myself to show more than one person with same name and types of things that come up and how old
Probably could say the same thing about driving. Some interesting parallels.
I do it in advance to avoid a potential mess
we discuss both and that some use tattoo to impress permanence
It always amazes me that they don't realize how much cyberbullying actually goes on out there.
Thats a really eye-popping analogy and we all prob have anecdotes to support that.
Turning a negative into a positive! Ss help us to illuminate examples as they happen and others can learn too!
RT : It should be termed “digital tattoo” because it is permanent. Yes Important to reinforce
im not sure if theres a lack of awareness of just prefer not to see.
little twist- who shares the stories of kids who stood up for people being cyberbullied- some great ones out there.
or at least it will take a lot of pain to undo it
But is it ever totally undo?
Q4: How does teaching it differ from elementary middle and high school?
Need to get ready for my Saturday walk. Have a great day everyone
saw one on ESPN- trying to find it right now...
I took the Electronic Tattoo approach w/2ndary Ss. They seems to internalize it better.
A4 Middle and high need to have some tougher convos. Issues get more serious We talk about inappropriate pics with older Ss
A4: Foundational skills in ES, put into practice and support in HS; great discussion and model throughout
A4 Highschool and elem have varying education needs for - choose age appropriate ones
A4 Age appropriate lesson for safety, privacy, cyberbullying, communication, digital tattoo, and creative rights
Time to head out. Have a fabulous three day weekend and Happy St. Valentine's Day!
does reporting as spam help? I haven’t utilized that in Twitter?
I think we've all got horror stories- and I think we need to share the survivor stories "Voice for Voiceless"
A4: Same conversation at intellectually higher level. Really never ends K->college and beyond.
In Tweetdeck, it blocks them and removes them from your feed. Can't hurt. Bad is more will follow
A4: I love because they have age-appropriate lessons on so many different aspects of digital citizenship.
That's my top resource too!
I like 'tattoo' for permanence. I like footprints because one moves through cyberspace & can't hide https://t.co/Lb3RyX4Ugw
We need to teach Ss empathy, how to deal with mistakes, how to stand up for others
They are fantastic! I always mention them in my presentations
that’s what I have been doing. Just not sure if it’s effective for everyone???
Just noticed that the reporting form has a lot more fields to fill out
at least they are getting multiple reports on same account
Yes! In everything, not just on sm https://t.co/lN4TvOPYpZ
We need to teach Ss empathy, how to deal with mistakes, how to stand up for others
so true . world in desperate need of kindness
AGREE! Ss really responded. Their curriculum needs to be crammed into daily/weekly courses.
